Pence hits inside-the-park HR, Rangers beat Red Sox 9-5
June 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Hunter Pence hit a stand-up, inside-the-park home run and the Texas Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 9-5 Tuesday night after both managers were ejected.

Ariel Jurado (4-2) struck out six while pitching six innings of three-run ball, and Pence, Asdrubal Cabrera and Ronald Guzman each had two RBIs for the Rangers. Texas has won four of five, including Monday night's extra-innings victory at Fenway Park.

Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts homered for Boston, which has lost three straight and five of six.

The Red Sox dropped to 34-34 on a night filled with frustrations. Andrew Benintendi was ejected in the fifth, and manager Alex Cora was also tossed defending his outfielder.

Darwinzon Hernandez (0-1) made his first major league start and struck out seven, but he struggled with his control and allowed four runs - three earned - on three hits and five walks. He faced two batters in the fourth, when Texas pulled ahead 4-3.

The Rangers added two more runs in the fifth on a double by Guzman, and the Red Sox began to unravel in the bottom half of the inning.

With Benintendi banished to the clubhouse, Pence took advantage of a realigned outfield for his 14th homer.

Texas manager Chris Woodward was tossed for the first time in his managing career by plate umpire Angel Hernandez when he argued a reversed call by second base umpire Jordan Baker in the sixth.

YANKEES 12, METS 5, 1ST GAME

METS 10, YANKEES 4, 2ND GAME

NEW YORK (AP) - Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer in the first inning off an ineffective James Paxton, J.D. Davis and Carlos Gomez also went deep, and the Mets wont the second game of a day-night doubleheader to earn a split with the Yankees.

Jason Vargas (3-3) wasn't sharp early but got stronger as the night wore on, helping the Mets to only the fifth win in their last 23 road games.

Luke Voit hit a three-run homer off Zack Wheeler (5-4) in a five-run fourth inning as the Yankees overcame a three-run deficit to win the opener 12-5. After falling out of the AL East lead for the first time since the morning of May 19, the Yankees (41-25) moved back into a tie with Tampa Bay atop the division.

The Mets (33-34) have not been over .500 since May 3.

Paxton (3-3) remained winless in three starts since a trip to the injured list caused by left knee inflammation. He gave up a season-high six runs, seven hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings, departing after RBI singles from Michael Conforto, Wilson Ramos and Adeiny Hechavarria.

In the opener, Masahiro Tanaka (4-5) gave up a three-run homer to Jeff McNeil that put the Mets ahead 4-1 in the third but rebounded to win for the first time in a month.

Gio Urshela homered, had four RBIs and was a triple short of the cycle for the Yankees. Gary Sanchez hit his 20th homer and had three RBIs.

CARDINALS 7, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Rookie Dakota Hudson allowed one run in a career-high seven innings, and St. Louis handed Miami its sixth consecutive defeat.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina returned after missing 11 games because of a strained right thumb and went 2 for 5 with a single and double.

Marcell Ozuna punctuated the victory with a ninth-inning homer, his 18th.

Hudson (5-3) gave up four hits, struck out six and retired 10 in a row during one stretch for the Cardinals, who have won his past five starts.

The Marlins totaled five hits, all singles. They rank last in the majors in runs and have been outscored 31-10 in the past six games.

Elieser Hernandez (0-1), recalled from Triple-A New Orleans to make his first start of the year, allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings.

PHILLIES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Scott Kingery hit a three-run homer, Jake Arrieta threw six effective innings and Philadelphia beat Arizona.

Arrieta (6-5) allowed three runs and six hits for his second win in eight starts. Hector Neris pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 14 tries.

Ketel Marte went deep for the Diamondbacks and the teams combined for only two homers a night after setting a major league record with 13.

Arizona lefty Jon Duplantier (1-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in three innings. The Diamondbacks' five-game winning streak ended.

Kingery gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead in the second with a drive to left, his seventh homer and third in two games. Bryce Harper ripped an RBI double to right to make it 4-0.

Carson Kelly's two-run double with two outs in the fourth cut it to 4-2. Eduardo Escobar's sacrifice fly in the fifth got Arizona within a run.

The Phillies regained their two-run lead in the bottom half. Bruce had an RBI single after J.T. Realmuto hit a double on which Rhys Hoskins scored following a throwing error by left fielder David Peralta.

ORIOLES 4, BLUE JAYS 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Rookie John Means tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and Baltimore took the series opener from Toronto.

Means (6-4) allowed one run on four hits with three walks over five innings and lowered his ERA to 2.60.

Baltimore reliever Shawn Armstrong threw a pair of scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Anthony Santander had three hits and an RBI-double for Baltimore, which can win consecutive games for the first time since May 4-6 and a series for the first time since April 22-24.

Eric Sogard led off the game with his sixth home run for the Blue Jays, who dropped their fifth straight game and have lost 11 of 13.

Blue Jays rookie right-hander Trent Thornton (1-5) loaded the bases on three walks in the second, but the Orioles couldn't capitalize. Thornton allowed three runs and seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks over five innings.

ATHLETICS 4, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Mike Fiers pitched six effective innings, Matt Olson and Khris Davis hit consecutive homers, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Fiers (6-3) allowed two runs and three hits, and is 4-0 in seven starts beginning with his no-hitter against Cincinnati on May 7.

Liam Hendriks, Lou Trivino and Blake Treinen, who gave up Willy Adames' RBI single in the ninth en route to his 15th save, combined to strike out six and complete the four-hitter.

Tommy Pham homered for the Rays, who are 16 games over .500 despite an 18-15 record at home.

After Matt Chapman reached on shortstop Adames' throwing error in the sixth, Olson hit a two-run homer and Davis then went deep two pitches later off Emilio Pagan (1-1) as Oakland took a 4-2 lead.

INDIANS 2, REDS 1, 10 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Oscar Mercado hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the 10th inning, leading Cleveland past Cincinnati in the intrastate matchup.

Mercado lined a 1-2 pitch from Raisel Iglesias (1-6) to left field and was mobbed by his teammates after rounding first base.

Mike Freeman drew a one-out walk and took third on a single by Leonys Martin. Francisco Lindor was intentionally walked, setting the stage for Mercado.

Brad Hand (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings and struck out the side in the 10th.

Cleveland has won five of seven on its homestand, taking two of three from Minnesota and the Yankees.

Indians starter Trevor Bauer allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings and threw 118 pitches. Red starter Luis Castillo allowed a solo homer to Carlos Santana in the fourth and struck out six in six innings.

ASTROS 10, BREWERS 8

HOUSTON (AP) - Rookie Yordan Alvarez hit one of Houston's four home runs to become the first player in franchise history to homer in his first two major league games.

Yuli Gurriel, Robinson Chirinos and Tyler White also homered for the Astros, who won for the fourth time in five games.

Travis Shaw hit a solo homer for the Brewers, who added a run on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth and got within two on Yasmani Grandal's three-run homer in the ninth. But Devenski struck out Eric Thames to end it.

Houston starter Brad Peacock (6-3) yielded seven hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings for the win.

Freddy Peralta (3-3) took the loss by giving up eight hits and six runs in four-plus innings.

Christian Yelich hit his MLB-leading 25th home run and finished a triple shy of the cycle as Milwaukee's four-game winning streak was snapped.

ROYALS 3, TIGERS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jorge Soler had the tying RBI double in the eighth inning and Cheslor Cuthbert followed with the go-ahead run-scoring single to lead Kansas City over Detroit.

Adalberto Mondesi started the rally with a double with one out and scored on Soler's hit off Victor Alcantara (2-1). Terrance Gore ran for Soler and stole third. He then scored on Cuthbert's single between three fielders in right field to put the Royals ahead.

Scott Barlow (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the win, and Ian Kennedy got the last three outs for his fifth save.

Jakob Junis had a quality start for Kansas City, allowing two runs and five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.

The Tigers' Nicholas Castellanos hit his 100th career homer, all with Detroit. Brandon Dixon hit a 447-foot homer in the fourth.

TWINS 6, MARINERS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jorge Polanco scored the tying run on a wild pitch and Marwin Gonzalez hit the go-ahead RBI single during Minnesota's three-run rally in the eighth inning.

Polanco reached base all four times he batted. He tried for a hustle double on each of his three hits, beating the tag at second base twice. That included the eighth against reliever Brandon Brennan (2-5), when Polanco followed Max Kepler's leadoff double with his own on a head-first slide to cut the lead to 5-4.

After advancing on a long fly out by Eddie Rosario, Polanco raced home on a stray slider by Austin Adams that skipped in the dirt past catcher Tom Murphy. Gonzalez put the surging Twins in front with his sharp single.

Matt Magill (2-0) pitched a perfect eighth for the Twins, winners in 19 of their last 25.

WHITE SOX 7, NATIONALS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Welington Castillo hit a grand slam and top rookie Eloy Jimenez homered at home for the first time, powering Chicago.

Castillo got his second career slam, with the other coming June 14, 2017, in the same ballpark when he played for the Baltimore Orioles.

Jimenez went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs. He drove a 1-1 pitch from Washington starter Patrick Corbin (5-5) over the batter's eye in center and onto the concourse for an estimated distance of 462 feet.

Anthony Rendon homered twice for the Nationals, who snapped a three-game winning streak.

Reliever Evan Marshall (1-0) retired all four batters he faced to get the win

Alex Colome got the final five outs - working out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth - for his 14th save in 14 chances.

ROCKIES 10, CUBS 3

DENVER (AP) - Rookie Peter Lambert went five strong innings and baffled Chicago for a second time in five days as Colorado won its 10th straight at home.

Lambert (2-0) allowed one run and three hits in his Coors Field debut.

Daniel Murphy led the Rockies offense with three hits, including a two-run double in the first. Charlie Blackmon added a three-run homer as part of a five-run sixth to break open the game.

Chicago lefty Jose Quintana (4-6) allowed four runs, three earned, over 4 2/3 innings. He also took the loss in Lambert's debut.

Jason Lambert homered in the second for the Cubs.

BRAVES 7, PIRATES 5, 8 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Brian McCann hit one of four Atlanta homers in the second inning and took Pirates starter Chris Archer deep again with a tiebreaking, three-run shot in the sixth to lead the Braves.

The Braves, tied for first in the NL East, have won five straight. The game was called following a 1-hour, 48-minute rain delay after the eighth inning.

Touki Toussaint (4-0), who relieved after another ineffective start by Mike Foltynewicz, earned the win. He allowed two hits and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings.

GIANTS 6, PADRES 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Evan Longoria hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning and made a stellar defensive play in the ninth as San Francisco rallied past San Diego.

Joe Panik singled twice and Pablo Sandoval added a sacrifice fly for the Giants. Steven Duggar hit a home run, his first since mid-April.

Fernando Tatis Jr. homered on the first pitch of the game and drove in two for San Diego. Ian Kinsler also went deep.

Mark Melancon (3-1) retired three batters to win. Will Smith pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 15th save in 15 tries. Longoria backed Smith with a leaping grab on Manuel Margot's hard liner for the second out of the inning.

?Your indifference cost these men and women their most valuable commodity: Time! It?s the one thing they?re running out of.?
Jon Stewart, advocating for additional funding for the 9/11 victim compensation fund

Wednesday?s quiz
Who was the last President of the US who had previously been the Vice-President?

Tuesday?s quiz
Dodger P Clayton Kershaw played center on his high school football team; Lions? QB Matthew Stafford was the QB on that high school team.

Monday?s quiz
Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game began in 1985.

**********************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Surprised to hear that the Oakland Raiders will be featured this summer on Hard Knocks; figured that they would wait until next year to feature the Raiders, when they move to Las Vegas.

12) Mets had two men on, no one out Tuesday with Jeff McNeil up; Bronx plays the 3B in for a bunt, and Mets? TV guy Gary Cohen exclaims, ?They?re playing in for a bunt!!! Doesn?t anyone scout?!?!?!?

Words aren?t out of his mouth and McNeil homers to right-center. I?m guessing Bronx coaches and staff won?t be too thrilled when they hear about Cohen?s comments- they are in first place after all, while the Mets are???the Mets.

11) There were 13 homers in the Arizona-Philly game Monday night, which is a major league record for one game.

10) Interesting to follow Twitter late Monday night and Tuesday with reaction to Kevin Durant?s injury; lot of people suddenly became medical experts.

Without knowing the inner workings of the Warriors, am guessing the decision comes down to Durant and the Warriors? trainer, with Durant having the final say.

What follows now really could alter the NBA?s entire offseason; what teams will throw major $$$ at a big star with a very serious leg injury? Will he get a shorter deal and have to prove himself healthy before he breaks the bank again?

9) With Game 6 in Oakland Thursday, it bears repeating that Toronto had a 6-point lead and the ball with 3:00 left Monday with a chance to win its first title, but lost at home.

Crowd will be fired up for Game 6, the last NBA game ever in Oakland? the Warriors have a new arena for next year, across the bay in San Francisco.

8) Royals-Tigers are playing a game in Omaha, Nebraska Thursday, in advance of the College World Series. Teams played Tuesday-Wednesday in Kansas City.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Giancarlo Stanton homered (was 2-4) in a Class A rehab game.
? Orioles? P Alex Cobb (hip) is out for the year.
? Tigers? SS Niko Goodrum left Tuesday?s game (bruised knee).

6) Memphis Grizzlies hired Taylor Jenkins as their new head coach; he was Mike Budenholzer?s assistant in Milwaukee this season and in Atlanta for five years. Jenkins will the Grizzlies? 4th coach in the last five years.

5) Saints signed DE Cam Jordan to a 3-year contract extension that is worth $52.5M with a maximum of $55.5M that includes $42M in guarantees.

4) FOX Sports produced its US Open promo, but didn?t include the person who won the last two US Opens, which was surprising to Brooks Koepka, who won the last two US Opens.

?We?re amazed that I wasn?t in it, just kind of shocked. Somebody probably got fired over it ? or should.?

3) Most home runs, first 67 games of a career in Major League history:
1. Jose Abreu, 25 (2014), 2. Cody Bellinger, 24 (2017) 5. Pete Alonso, 22 (2019)

2) Detroit Tigers have Jack Morris as a TV analyst this year and he is very good, especially when he talks about pitching. Very honest; I learn something every game.

1) Zack Greinke has thrown 89 pitches this season that were under 70 MPH, 25 more than any other pitcher in the major leagues.

LEADING OFF: Big Papi recovering, Kingery blossoming
June 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

BIG PAPI'S RECOVERY

David Ortiz remained in intensive care at a Boston hospital Tuesday night, recovering from the bullet fired into his back at a bar in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night. Police are investigating what aspect of the national hero's life made him the target of what appeared to be an assassination attempt. Doctors in Santo Domingo removed Ortiz's gallbladder and part of his intestines, and the former ballplayer was then flown to Boston for further treatment Monday night, undergoing two hours of exploratory surgery. Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, said in a statement that he was ''stable, awake and resting comfortably'' at Massachusetts General Hospital and was expected to remain there for several days.

GREAT SCOTT

Scott Kingery brings a hot bat into Philadelphia's game at Arizona. Kingery has three homers over his past two games, including a pair Monday, and he's batting .324 with a .995 OPS following a disappointing rookie campaign last year. Kingery, a natural second baseman, has been pressed into regular center field duty following Odubel Herrera's domestic violence suspension and injuries to Andrew McCutchen, Roman Quinn and Adam Haseley.

ANOTHER LOOK

Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson is appealing a one-game suspension for shoving Pirates catcher Elias Diaz in the first inning of Monday's game. Donaldson can continue to play until his appeal is heard. He was in his customary cleanup spot in the Atlanta batting order Tuesday night. Monday's ruckus began when Joe Musgrove hit Donaldson with a pitch. As Donaldson began walking to first base, he exchanged glares with Musgrove and took a few steps toward the mound. He shoved Diaz when the catcher intervened.

NEW KID

In a season when so much has gone wrong, the Indians have found a positive surprise in right-hander Zach Plesac. The nephew of former big league pitcher Dan Plesac, he has a 1.86 ERA through three major league starts. He opened the season as an unheralded 24-year-old at Double-A but pitched his way into Cleveland's short-handed rotation with sharp control and a fastball in the mid-90s mph. He'll get his fourth start in a matinee against Cincinnati.

Wednesday's Diamond Notes
June 12, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Rangers (9-3 last 12)

The Major League Baseball season is reaching mid-June and the Rangers currently own a better record than the World Series champion Red Sox. Texas captured the first two games with Boston at Fenway Park, including Tuesday?s 9-5 triumph as a +165 underdog. Hunter Pence continued a solid comeback season with his 14th home run (an inside-the-park job), while right-hander Ariel Jurado picked up his third consecutive win on the mound.

The Rangers take on the Red Sox for the third game of the four-game set on Wednesday afternoon, as the contest was moved up in the day due to the Bruins playing in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Lance Lynn takes the mound for Texas as the right-hander is fresh off six consecutive quality starts, although the Rangers lost his last outing to the A?s, 5-3. The positive for Lynn in today?s matchup is the 4-0 record the Rangers own in his four daytime starts.

Coldest team: Marlins (0-6 last six)

Miami started June like gang-busters by winning four consecutive games at San Diego and Milwaukee, while scoring 42 runs in those victories. However, the Marlins have reverted back to the early-season Marlins by dropping six in a row, while plating a total of 10 runs, including one each in the past two losses to the Cardinals. For the exception of putting up six runs in Sunday?s extra-innings meltdown loss to the Braves, Miami has put up four runs in the other five games during this skid.

The Marlins turn to rookie Jordan Yamamoto tonight to end this cold streak, as the right-hander is making his first Major League start. Yamamoto takes the place of the injured Jose Urena, as the Hawaiian native came to Miami from Milwaukee as part of the trade for 2018 MVP Christian Yelich. Yamamoto posted a 3.28 ERA in Double-A ball this season, as he faces a Cardinals? team seeking its second three-game road winning streak of 2019.

Hottest pitcher: Mike Soroka, Braves (7-1, 1.38 ERA)

Only one pitcher in the National League that has posted at least 60 innings of work owns a better ERA than Soroka and that?s Dodgers? southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu at 1.36. Soroka has allowed multiple earned runs only once in 10 starts, while coming off a terrific outing at Miami in which he tossed eight innings and gave up one run in a 7-1 blowout. Since losing his first start of the season to Arizona, Soroka is unbeaten in his past three home outings, while facing the Pirates for the first time as Atlanta has captured the first two meetings with Pittsburgh in this series.

Coldest pitcher: Edwin Jackson, Blue Jays (0-4, 11.90 ERA)

Toronto needed another arm in its depleted starting rotation and turned to the veteran Jackson back in May. It hasn?t worked out well for either party as the Blue Jays are 0-5 in Jackson?s five starts, including three losses by seven runs or more. Jackson didn?t escape the fourth inning in last Thursday?s 6-2 home defeat to the Yankees as he yielded six runs and a pair of homers as a +190 underdog. The right-hander is listed in his shortest underdog number tonight against the Orioles as Toronto looks to snap a seven-game road losing streak.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (7-1-1 last nine)

Minnesota improved to 4-1 against Seattle this season following Tuesday?s 6-5 comeback victory at Target Field. The Twins erased an early 3-0 deficit to beat the M?s as Minnesota eclipsed the five-run mark for the eighth time in 10 games. Minnesota has put up at least four runs in nine consecutive home games as the Twins try to keep that streak going tonight against Tommy Milone, who has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his three starts this season. Jose Berrios has seen the OVER hit in eight of 13 starts for Minnesota, while going 4-0-1 to the OVER in his past five home outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (8-0 last eight)

Cincinnati became the first team to reach 40 UNDERS on the season following Tuesday?s 2-1 extra innings defeat to rival Cleveland. The Reds haven?t been able to get their offense going of late by scoring two runs or fewer in six of the past eight games, but Cincinnati?s pitching staff hasn?t given up more than four runs in seven consecutive contests. Cincinnati closes out its quick two-game set at Progressive Field with Anthony DeSclafaini on the mound, who has seen the UNDER cash in three of his past four outings.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Astros

The opener between these powers was a slugfest at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday as Houston outlasted Milwaukee, 10-8 as -115 favorites. The Astros scored multiple runs in four innings, highlighted by four home runs, including the second in as many games for rookie Yordan Alvarez. Houston improved to 12-0 in its past 12 series openers, while dropping its last Game 1 at home to Cleveland back on April 25.

It?s a terrific matchup on the mound tonight as Justin Verlander opposes Milwaukee?s Brandon Woodruff. Verlander continues to be a dominant force on the mound by owning a 9-2 record and 2.31 ERA, in spite of picking up a no-decision in his past outing at Seattle. The former Cy Young winner and MVP exiting with a 5-1 lead before the Mariners rallied back to force extra innings. Houston eventually won, 8-7 in 14 innings, as the Astros hit an OVER with Verlander starting for the first time in seven starts.

Woodruff is putting together a career season at 8-1 in 13 starts and 90 strikeouts to go along with a 3.87 ERA. The Brewers have won eight consecutive starts made by the former Mississippi State standout, including four straight wins away from Miller Park. Milwaukee has lost three of four Game 2?s on the road after dropping the series opener this season, while going 2-6 after allowing 10 or more runs.

Betcha didn?t know: The Royals rallied past the Tigers, 3-2 to pick up only their eighth win in their past 10 games. Kansas City has not put together great offensive performances in games following a win, posting a 7-2-1 mark to the UNDER in the last 10 games of this situation, while the Royals have scored two runs or less eight times in this span.

Hamels throws 7 scoreless, 4 batters hit as Cubs beat Rox
June 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) Cole Hamels struck out nine in seven scoreless innings, singled twice and drove in two runs to lead the Chicago Cubs past the Colorado Rockies 10-1 in a testy game on Wednesday.

Rockies All-Star third-baseman Nolan Arenado left in the fifth inning with a left forearm contusion after Hamels (6-2) hit him with a pitch in the third, and three more batters - including Hamels - were hit by pitches later in the game.

Chicago's Kris Bryant was hit by pitches three times in the first two games of the series.

Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber homered for Chicago, which snapped a five-game road losing streak. Colorado's 10-game home winning streak ended.

Chicago scored five times in the second off Antonio Sentenzela (5-5).

MARLINS 9, CARDINALS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Jordan Yamamoto pitched seven innings to win his major league debut, Garrett Cooper hit a grand slam and Miami blanked St. Louis to end a six-game skid.

Yamamoto, acquired last year in the Christian Yelich trade, allowed three hits and two walks and threw 95 pitches. The rookie also earned an RBI with a squeeze bunt.

Two relievers completed a three-hitter.

Cooper finished a double shy of the cycle, and pulled a two-out inside fastball that was off the plate for a grand slam in the second inning against Miles Mikolas (4-7).

DIAMONDBACKS 2, PHILLIES 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Merrill Kelly tossed three-hit ball over 7 2/3 innings, and Arizona beat Philadelphia.

Kelly (7-6) struck out five before departing when Bryce Harper entered the game as a pinch-hitter. Andrew Chafin retired Harper on two pitches and Greg Holland finished the three-hitter, earning his 10th save in 11 tries.

The Diamondbacks won another series in Philadelphia and have won 11 of their last 13 road games against the Phillies.

Philadelphia's Zach Eflin (6-6) allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings, tying a career high with nine strikeouts.

RED SOX 4, RANGERS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Mookie Betts drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning, giving Boston the win over Texas.

Andrew Benintendi hit a triple and two doubles, driving in two runs for the Red Sox as they ended a three-game skid and avoided falling below .500 for the first time in more than a month.

Boston rallied against reliever Jesse Chavez (2-1) in the ninth after allowing the Rangers to tie it in the eighth on an unearned run.

Matt Barnes (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth.

ATHLETICS 6, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Ramon Laureano hit his first career grand slam to break an eighth-inning tie and finished with five RBIs as Oakland beat Tampa Bay.

Oakland went 6-4, including taking two of three from the Rays, on a season-long 10-game trip that included some significant travel issues.

Matt Olson started the decisive eighth with a single off Adam Kolarek (2-2). Laureano made it 6-2 by sending a 2-2 pitch from Colin Poche into the left-field stands.

Liam Hendriks (3-0) allowed the Rays to tie it in the seventh by allowing two inherited runners to score, but got the win.

REDS 7, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Nick Senzel and Joey Votto hit back-to-back home runs to open the game and Cincinnati later got deep shots from Eugenio Suarez and Curt Casali, powering the Reds past Cleveland.

The quick homers by Senzel and Votto off rookie Zach Plesac (1-2) marked the first time an opposing team hit consecutive homers to start a game in Cleveland in 118 years.

The Reds earned a split of the two-game series between Ohio's teams and snapped an eight-game losing streak in interleague play.

Anthony DeSclafani (3-3) made the early support stand, allowing one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Senzel and second baseman Jose Peraza had a frightening collision in short center field in the first. Both avoided serious injury and stayed in the game.

BLUE JAYS 8, ORIOLES 6

BALTIMORE (AP) - Rowdy Tellez hit a grand slam to cap a six-run fifth inning, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits and Toronto beat Baltimore to end a five-game losing streak.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two RBIs for the Blue Jays, who matched their run total from the previous five games combined.

Pitching in his 400th career game, Edwin Jackson (1-4) allowed two runs in five innings of relief for Toronto.

Baltimore starter David Hess (1-9) gave up four runs and five hits in four-plus innings.

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Why does there always have to be someone to blame? People today always need someone to blame when something bad happens.

Kevin Durant got hurt Monday night; all I see on Twitter is ?Whose fault is it??

The Warriors trainer? Their GM? Durant? His agent? Russell Westbrook?

Sometimes stuff just happens, then people have to react/adjust to it. This was no one?s fault.

12) Durant already had his injured achilles tendon operated on; that was quick.

11) Of the top 100 top-rated TV programs of 2018, 64 were NFL games.

10) Tuesday night was the first time the Pittsburgh Pirates allowed four home runs in an inning since 1956, when the New York Giants did it, with a young Willie Mays hitting one of them.

9) This week at Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, a gambler bet $44,000 that Phil Mickelson won?t finish in the top 5 at the US Open at Pebble Beach; if he wins his bet, he banks $4,000.

8) Reds opened the first inning Wednesday with back/back homers (Senzel/Votto), first time they did that since 2001, when Alex Ochoa/Barry Larkin did it.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Padres sent P Chris Paddack to Class A ball, just to rein in his innings.
? Arizona put P Jon Duplantier (shoulder) on IL.
? Marlins put P Jose Urena (back) on IL.

6) Something you don?t see much anymore; a defensive tackle on the Baltimore Ravens was so out of shape at minicamp that the team set him home, basically after stretching exercises. With so much money at stake nowadays, players get tend to stay in shape year-round.

5) Tennessee Titans will retire Steve McNair?s #9 and Eddie George?s #27 this fall; McNair?s #9 will be the first #9 ever retired by an NFL team.

4) Back in January, the St Louis Blues were having a bad season and fired their coach; a gambler in Las Vegas wagered $400 on them to win the Stanley Cup, at 250-1 odds. Probably seemed like throwing money away to most, but today the guy cashes a ticket worth $100,000.

3) Braves 8, Braves 7 (11)? Game ended around 12:30 am; teams have a 12:10 first pitch today, so lot of people better sleep fast.

2) Brewers 6, Astros (14)? Mike Moustakas hit the deciding home run in the 14th inning.

1) Wednesday night, a person paid $69,287.21 each on the Warriors? website for two courtside seats (total: $138,574.42) for Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

Someone should tell this person that the games are on TV.

LEADING OFF: Lester versus Kershaw in Los Angeles
June 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

ACES UP

Lefty aces Jon Lester and Clayton Kershaw square off when the Chicago Cubs visit the Los Angeles Dodgers for the opener of a four-game series. Lester is looking for his third straight victory for Chicago. He allowed four runs in the first Saturday night against St. Louis, but managed to go six innings in the Cubs' 9-4 win. Kershaw is 0-1 in two June starts for NL West-leading Los Angeles, but the three-time Cy Young Award winner has allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings this month.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Two days before the College World Series begins in Omaha, Nebraska, Major League Baseball comes to town for the first time to mark the occasion with a special regular-season game. The Tigers and Royals play at the home of Kansas City's top farm club, which doubles as the site for the CWS every June.

HELP ON THE WAY

With Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge on their way back from injuries, the New York Yankees hit the road for a four-game series against the Chicago White Sox. Stanton homered twice in a rehab game with Class A Tampa on Wednesday night. He has been sidelined by biceps, shoulder and calf injuries. Judge, coming back from a strained left oblique, could start a rehab assignment this weekend with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. J.A. Happ (6-3) goes for his sixth consecutive win, while Ivan Nova (3-5) pitches for the White Sox against his former team.

SNAKES IN THE CAPITAL

The Nationals' efforts to climb back into contention in the NL East will be tested during a four-game series against the Diamondbacks, who are 5-1 on their current trip. Arizona outscored Toronto 22-4 during a three-game sweep and then took two of three from NL East-leading Philadelphia, getting a three-hitter from Merrill Kelly and two relievers in a 2-0 win Wednesday night. Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke starts the series opener, while the Nats will throw Max Scherzer on Friday and Stephen Strasburg on Saturday.

TEXAS STRONG

The Rangers have lost only one series in the past month, and they have a chance to take three of four during their only visit to Boston this season. Adrian Sampson starts the series finale against Red Sox lefty David Price. Boston won 4-3 Wednesday on a ninth-inning walk, but Texas manager Chris Woodward wasn't concerned. ''We're in a good spot. We've been playing well, so it's fun to watch our guys compete in that kind of environment against a good team,'' he said. ''When they take it out on the field, they're fearless. We got beat today, but they had to execute some pitches to beat us and that's going to happen every once in a while.''
