LEADING OFF: Odorizzi sharp, Morton streak, Nola vs Braves
June 14, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

YU AGAIN?

Yu Darvish says he expects to hear some boos when he takes the mound for the Cubs at Dodger Stadium. It will be his first outing at the ballpark since he got roughed up in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series, chased early as the Houston Astros beat Los Angeles to win their first championship. Darvish got hit hard in both of his starts in that Series, and some fans blamed him for the Dodgers' defeat.

This year, Darvish is 2-3 with a 4.98 ERA in 14 starts for Chicago.

NEED NOLA

Phillies righty Aaron Nola (6-1, 4.58) starts at Atlanta - the NL East-leading Braves have won eight in a row. Nola has done well against Atlanta in his career, going 8-3 with a 2.05 ERA in 13 starts.

OH THAT ODORIZZI

Coming into this season, Jake Odorizzi was 47-48 lifetime with a 3.95 ERA. But this year, he's a major reason why the Minnesota Twins have the best record in the big leagues.

Odorizzi (9-2, 1.92 ERA) has excelled through 13 starts - he hasn't permitted a run in six of his last eight outings, and now faces Kansas City at Target Field.

MORTON MOMENTUM

Rays right-hander Charlie Morton (8-0, 2.10 ERA) pitches against the Angels at Tropicana Field, looking to extend his 21-start unbeaten streak that began last Aug. 17 when he played for Houston.

The 35-year-old has made 14 starts this season in his first year with Tampa Bay. He's done well in his career vs. Angels stars Mike Trout (3 for 12, 1 HR) and Albert Pujols (7 for 30, no HRs).

FACING THE BIG BATS

Tampa Bay two-way prospect Brendan McKay starts for Triple-A Durham against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, which added New York Yankees sluggers Aaron Judge (left oblique strain) and Giancarlo Stanton (biceps/shoulder/calf) to its roster Friday for rehab assignments.

The lefty is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings over his first three starts. A first baseman in the past, he's been a DH this year when not pitching and is batting .182 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 33 games at two minor league levels.

WISE WITH MIZE

Detroit pitching prospect Casey Mize will miss some time while dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder. He exited a Double-A start this week after just 2 1/3 innings.

Mize was taken by the Tigers as the overall No. 1 pick in last year's draft. He's 8-0 with a 0.92 ERA this season across two minor league levels and threw a no-hitter in April in his Double-A debut.

SCHOOL DAYS

The College World Series starts at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, the park where the Tigers and Royals met this week.

Michigan plays Texas Tech in the opener, followed by Florida State vs. Arkansas. Seminoles coach Mike Martin is the NCAA all-time wins leader and is retiring after this season at age 75 - he's trying to win his first national championship in his 17 visits to Omaha.

Weekend Watch
June 15, 2019
By Joe Williams

Saturday

The Mariners and the Athletics continue their series in Oakland on Saturday night with LHP Wade LeBlanc listed as the scheduled start against emerging ace RHP Frankie Montas. LeBlanc is 3-2 with a 5.31 ERA across six starts and two relief appearances, having been bumped for an 'opener' as recently as June 3. When he entered that game, he was impressive, allowing just one earned run, three hits and a walk with two strikeouts across eight innings of 'relief'. He needed just 11.1 pitches per inning in that outing, a season-best performance.

The A's counter with Montas, who has posted an 8-2 record with a 2.84 ERA with 79 strikeouts across 76 innings in his 13 outings, posting a 1.18 WHIP. At home he has been a little more hittable iwht a 3.54 ERA and 1.32 WHIP as opposed to a 2.44 ERA and 1.10 WHIP on the road, but he is good nonetheless. The A's are 5-1 across his past six starts overall, and 4-1 across his five outings at O.co Coliseum. In addition, he is 9-3 over the past 12 starts against teams with a losing overall record, and 4-1 in his past five outings against American League West foes.

With Montas' stellar numbers you can forget about the fact the A's are 0-6 across their past six at home, 4-9 in the past 13 in the division and 1-4 in the past five Game 2s of a series. They are 8-1 in the past nine at home vs. LHP, while going 38-17 in the past 55 overall against southpaws. As far as LeBlanc is concerned, the M's are 6-2 over his past eight road outings, and 13-3 in his past 16 against teams with a losing overall record. However, they're 0-4 over his past four outings, and 1-4 in the past five inside the division. Seattle is also just 2-8 in the past 10 road games against a right-hander, and 4-17 in the past 21 road games against teams with a winning home mark, which the A's still own despite their recent skid.

The Padres and Rockies combined for 28 runs in a crazy extra-innings affair at Coors Field, which made the place famous for long balls and never-safe leads. Will the teams have anything left in Saturday's game which goes off at 8:10 p.m. ET?

The runs were actually not a season high for San Diego, as they had 19 runs in a game in Toronto back on May 25. The next day they produced just one run in a 10-1 loss. The time before that when they scored 11 in Atlanta on May 2, they posted just three runs in a loss the next day against the Dodgers at home. Those are the only two instances of the Padres scoring double-digit runs this season, but they followed both games up with a loss and a lack of offense. In fact, over the past two seasons they're just 1-8 in the following game after scoring double-digit runs, including a pair of shutout losses.

Colorado scored double digits and lost on Friday night. The last time they scored 10 or more runs was just this past week on Tuesday against the Cubs. They followed it up with a one-run stinker, falling 10-1 on Wednesday. That was a rarity, however, as the last eight times they scored 10 or more runs they have followed it up with a respectable 5-3 record, all this season.

The Padres roll with LHP Eric Lauer, and San Diego is 4-1 across his past five outings, and 5-2 in the past seven on the road when he starts. However, they're just 1-5 inthe past six vs. RHP, while going 2-5 in the past seven on the road against a righty. Colorado is 13-3 in the past 16 home outings by Marquez, and 4-1 in his past five overall. They're also 5-2 in the past seven vs. LHP, and 6-1 in the past seven inside the division.

Weather Report

Wind will be a factor all over MLB on Saturday. The Red Sox and Orioles will experience winds blowing 11-14 mph to straightaway center field at Camden Yards. The same holds true right down the Baltimore-Washington Parkway at Nationals Park, as the Diamondbacks and Nats have a stiff 11-14 mph wind blowing out to center as well.

It will be the opposite for the Royals and Twins at Target Field, as they face winds out of straightaway center field blowing into the batters' face at 10-13 mph. The Cardinals and Mets will see a 13-16 mph jetstream blowing out to straightaway center, while the Rangers and Reds see a wind blowing across the field from first to third base at 10-13 mph.

In Detroit, a light rain or drizzle will be falling. It doesn't sound too ominous, but the forecast does call for a 60 percent or greater chance of light precipitation. The Yankees and White Sox will also see a 50 percent chance of light precipitation for their battle.

Sunday, June 16

In matinee action in Motown, the Indians roll out RHP Trevor Bauer against Tigers RHP Spencer Turnbull. The Indians have had a power outage when 'Bauer Outage' is on the bump lately, going 1-4 in his past five outings, and 0-4 in his past four starts against division opponents. Cleveland enters the weekend 4-10 in the previous 14 vs. RHP, too. The Tigers haven't been much better for Turnbull, going 1-5 in the past six starts overall, and 1-5 in the past six at Comerica, too. Detroit has been handcuffed by Bauer in the past, too, going just 1-4 in his past five starts against them. The under is 4-0 in Bauer's past four road starts againts the Tigers, too, while going 4-0 in his past four outings against them overall, too.

The Royals roll with RHP Jakob Junis against LHP Martin Perez and the Twins at Target Field in the series finale. Kansas City has managed just a 2-5 mark over the past seven starts by Junis, while going 3-11 in his past 14 while working on four days of rest and 1-4 in his past five against winning teams, too. They're also 4-10 in his past 14 on the road. It's the complete opposite for the Twins, as are most of their trends as opposed to the Royals. Minnesota is 6-1 over Perez's past seven against teams with a losing record, while going 7-3 in his past 10 starts overall.

The Cubs and Dodgers wrap up their series on national television on Sunday night, and it's LHP Jose Quintana and LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu squaring off. Chicago is just 3-9 over his past 12 starts on the road, and 0-4 in Q's past four outings overall. In the past seven on the road vs. LHP the Cubs have won just twice, too. The Dodgers are 6-1 over Ryu's past seven outings, and 39-16 in his past 55 outings at home. He doesn't flash with lightning velocity, but he is crafty and manages to miss quite a few bats. They're also 5-0 across his past five home outings against winning teams, too, and L.A. is 23-5 in the past 28 overall at home against teams with a winning overall mark.

Weather Report

On Sunday, the Red Sox and O's do it again with winds blowing out to the right-center field power alley at 11-14 mph. The Cardinals and Mets also see a stiff 10-13 mph wind gusting to center.

It will be wet and humid for the Rangers-Reds series finale, with as much as a 60 percent chance of rain during the game. It will tail off by 5 p.m. ET, so expect them to get it in, especially since these interleague teams won't meet again this season and a reschedule is a hassle in those cases. All other venues look good, with no rain and/or wind concerns.

Sale strikes out 10, BoSox blast O's 7-2
June 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer and the New York Yankees stayed perfect when they use an opener, cooling off the Chicago White Sox with an 8-4 win Saturday night.

Torres capped New York's four-run fourth with his 15th homer off Reynaldo Lopez. He also had a sacrifice fly.

Gary Sanchez added three RBIs as New York leapfrogged Tampa Bay for the AL East lead. Cameron Maybin homered and Didi Gregorius had two hits.

The Yankees have been battling the Rays for the division lead for much of the season, and help is on the way.

New York acquired Edwin Encarnacion on Saturday night in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for minor league pitcher Juan Then. The 36-year-old Encarnacion leads the AL with 21 home runs.

Chicago had won five of six to get back to .500 for the first time since April 5. But it was unable to overcome another shaky performance by Lopez (4-7), who permitted five runs and six hits in six innings after the start of the game was delayed 32 minutes by rain.

Catcher Welington Castillo and manager Rick Renteria were ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the eighth.

The Yankees improved to 5-0 this year when employing an opener, with Chad Green starting each one of those victories. The right-hander struck out six in two dominant innings against the White Sox.

ATHLETICS 11, MARINERS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Frankie Montas struck out nine in six innings for his team-leading ninth win, and Oakland beat Seattle. After the game ended, the Mariners announced they had traded AL home run leader Edwin Encarnacion to the New York Yankees.

Marcus Semien homered and scored three runs for the A's, extending his career-high hitting streak to 12 games. Jurickson Profar had three hits and drove in four runs.

Domingo Santana singled twice for Seattle, which lost for the third time in five games.

Trading Encarnacion was the latest indication the last-place Mariners are looking toward the future after beginning the season 13-2. Seattle traded Jay Bruce to Philadelphia on June 2 and may be in line to make additional moves before next month's deadline.

Montas (9-2) won his fifth straight, allowing two runs, six hits and walked one.

The A's scored three runs in the first against opener Gerson Bautista (0-1), then got to Wade LeBlanc for one in the second and five in the fourth.

RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Sale struck out 10 over six sharp innings, J.D. Martinez homered in a third straight game and Boston beat Baltimore.

Sale (3-7) gave up two runs, six hits and a walk. Both runs came in the sixth, after the left-hander extended his streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 22. Sale ended his outing by blowing a third strike past Keon Broxton with runners on the corners and Boston nursing a 3-2 lead.

Martinez hit his 16th home run, the fourth in three games, to provide the Red Sox with a two-run cushion in the seventh on the way to their fourth straight win.

Baltimore got an RBI double from Renato Nunez and sacrifice fly from Jonathan Villar. The Orioles have gone winless in 15 straight series (0-14-1) since taking two of three from the White Sox on April 22-24.

ANGELS 5, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Charlie Morton lost for the first time in 22 starts and Los Angeles hit three homers in a win over Tampa Bay.

Morton (8-1) struck out nine in six innings, giving up four runs on five hits in his first loss since Aug. 11.

David Fletcher, Justin Bour and Kevan Smith homered for the Angels, who won for the fourth time in five games.

Hansel Robles picked up his 10th save in 12 opportunities.

Yandy Diaz hit a three-run homer, his 11th, for the Rays.

Jose Suarez (2-1) gave up three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

PHILLIES 6, BRAVES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Cesar Hernandez singled in two runs off closer Luke Jackson in the ninth inning, and Philadelphia rallied from a one-run deficit to snap Atlanta's eight-game winning streak.

It was a big comeback for the Phillies, who looked poised to lose for the fifth time in six games and fall 3+ games behind their rivals in NL East race.

Braves starter Sean Newcomb had a scary moment in the third inning when he was struck on the back of the head by J.T. Realmuto's ground-rule double. He walked off the field under his own power.

Hernandez hit his seventh homer in the fourth.

Hector Neris earned his 15th save in 16 chances. Edubray Ramos (1-0) earned the win.

Josh Donaldson hit a three-run homer for Atlanta. Jackson (3-2) blew his sixth save in 16 chances.

ASTROS 7, BLUE JAYS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Yordan Alvarez homered and Jack Mayfield hit three doubles as Houston's rookies led the way in a win over Toronto.

Alvarez became the fourth player in major league history to hit four home runs in his first five games. He sent a solo drive into the upper deck in right field and finished with three hits.

Josh Reddick also homered for the AL West-leading Astros.

Framber Valdez (3-2), another rookie, struck out eight in six innings, allowing two runs and four hits.

Clayton Richard (0-3) yielded five runs and seven hits in five innings.

RANGERS 4, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jeff Mathis had a pair of hits and drove in a run, Mike Minor pitched into the seventh inning for his first win in nearly a month, and Texas won its second straight over Cincinnati.

The Rangers took advantage of three Reds errors and finally got some runs for Minor (6-4).

The lefty gave up Yasiel Puig's two-run homer and Curt Casali's solo shot in 6 1/3 innings for his first win since May 20. Shawn Kelley pitched the ninth for his eighth save in 12 chances.

Tanner Roark (4-6) has lost all of his three starts in June.

The Reds also lost rookie center fielder Nick Senzel, who fouled a pitch off his left eye in the fifth inning.

GIANTS 8, BREWERS 7

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Catcher Steven Vogt hit two triples and left fielder Mike Yastrzemski made a nifty catch for the final out to help San Francisco beat Milwaukee.

The Giants rallied from a 5-1 deficit for their fourth straight win.

Christian Yelich hit his major league-leading 26th homer for the Brewers, who have lost three of four. Yelich extended his hitting streak to 12 games and Manny Pina also homered for the Brewers.

Giants reliever Trevor Gott (3-0) pitched an inning and got the win. Will Smith picked up his 18th save in 18 tries. Starter Madison Bumgarner gave up three earned in six innings.

Vogt became the first Giants catcher to triple twice in a game since Steve Nicosia did it in July 18, 1984. Vogt hadn't hit a triple since May 4, 2017.

DIAMONDBACKS 10, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ketel Marte hit two of Arizona's four solo homers off Stephen Strasburg in a victory over Washington.

Strasburg (7-4) allowed four homers in a game for the second time in his career, the first since August 8, 2014, at Atlanta. Strasburg gave up a season-high nine hits and tied a season-high by allowing six earned runs.

Adam Jones and Christian Walker also homered off Strasburg. Kevin Cron hit a pinch-hit homer.

The Nationals scored all their runs un the bottom half of the first. Trea Turner scored on Adam Eaton's sacrifice fly before Juan Soto and Matt Adams hit solo homers.

Yoshihisa Hirano (3-3) allowed two hits while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings.

INDIANS 4, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Shane Bieber pitched impressively into the eighth inning, and Leonys Martin stole home to lift Cleveland past Detroit.

Bieber (6-2) allowed four hits and struck out 12 in 7 2/3 innings. Detroit managed only one baserunner through the first six innings before scoring twice in the seventh.

Martin provided the highlight of the game in the eighth, taking off from third while reliever Victor Alcantara was preparing to make a pitch. Alcantara stepped off and threw to the plate, and although the ball arrived at the same time as Martin, the Cleveland runner's hand knocked the ball away as he reached for home.

Brad Hand earned his 20th save in 20 chances.

Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected in the sixth.

The first three Cleveland runs came in the fifth off reliever Nick Ramirez (3-1).

MARLINS 4, PIRATES 3

MIAMI (AP) - Pablo Lopez pitched seven strong innings and allowed three runs tas Miami edged Pittsburgh.

Garrett Cooper and Harold Ramirez each had three hits for the Marlins while Starlin Castro knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth.

The Pirates have lost eight of nine.

Lopez (5-5) gave up seven hits and one walk. He struck out four.

Sergio Romo earned his 12th save in 13 opportunities.

Pirates' 24-year old right-hander Dario Agrazal, a native of Panama, made his debut. He pitched four innings and allowed six hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out three.

Geoff Hartlieb (0-1) took the loss.

METS 8, CARDINALS 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Second baseman Jeff McNeil made a game-saving throw from right field to home plate for the final out, and New York held off St. Louis after starter Noah Syndergaard exited with a strained right hamstring.

Pete Alonso smashed a mammoth three-run homer for the Mets off the facing of the third deck in a five-run first inning against Michael Wacha (4-3). J.D. Davis homered and had four hits, finishing a triple short of the cycle. And this time, New York's beleaguered bullpen finally held on.

Syndergaard (5-4) reached for his right hamstring after throwing a pitch in the seventh. He threw 102 pitches and was charged with five runs, four earned, and six hits in six-plus innings.

Dexter Fowler homered early and had three RBIs for the Cardinals, who stole six bases - their most in 20 years.

TWINS 5, ROYALS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - C.J. Cron drove in the go-ahead run for Minnesota with a sixth-inning double, making Jake Odorizzi the second 10-game winner in the majors this season and capping a comeback victory.

Jorge Soler sent Odorizzi (10-2) and the Twins to an immediate deficit with a towering two-run homer in the first, and Whit Merrifield's solo shot started a two-run fifth inning that ended with a 4-1 lead for the Royals.

The Twins they surged back against Royals starter Glenn Sparkman (1-3) with a solo drive by Max Kepler and a two-run smash from Marwin Gonzalez.

The teams played in front of Minnesota's fifth sellout crowd of the season, thanks to the pregame ceremony for Joe Mauer's uniform retirement.

CUBS 2, DODGERS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Anthony Rizzo hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off closer Kenley Jansen in the ninth, lifting Chicago over NL West-leading Los Angeles.

Jansen hit Kris Bryant in the arm leading off the ninth. Rizzo followed with his 19th homer.

Jansen (2-2) retired the next three batters, including two on strikeouts, to end the inning.

Kyle Ryan (2-1) got the victory with one-third inning of relief.

Jansen spoiled a gem by Walker Buehler, who outdueled Yu Darvish with seven scoreless innings.

Buehler struck out six and walked none.

Alex Verdugo homered leading off the fourth to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.

Darvish gave up one run and two hits in seven innings. He struck out 10 and walked one.

ROCKIES 14, PADRES 8

DENVER (AP) - Charlie Blackmon finished with four hits for the third straight game, Ian Desmond hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, and Colorado beat San Diego in another wild Coors Field game.

Blackmon became the first Rockies player to have three straight four-hit games.

San Diego third baseman Manny Machado had two hits and scored twice before being ejected by plate umpire Bill Welke in the fifth inning after a called third strike.

Ian Kinsler had three hits and three RBIs for the Padres, who nearly rallied from a six-run deficit for the second straight night.

German Marquez (7-3) tossed 5 1/3 innings for the Rockies, who scored five runs off San Diego starter Eric Lauer (5-6).

Sunday?s 6-pack

Six best college football QB?s for this year, according to Phil Steele?s magazine:

? Trevor Lawrence, Clemson

? Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

? Sam Ehlinger, Texas

? Justin Herbert, Oregon

? Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma

? D?Eriq King, Houston

Tweet of the Day
?Ok, I say we all chip in and buy Whataburger back. Make honey butter chicken biscuits available all day, add kolaches to the menu and change nothing else. Especially not the ketchup.?
JJ Watt, after Whataburger was sold to a Chicago investment firm

Sunday?s quiz
Where did JJ Watt play his college football?

Saturday?s quiz
Chicago White Sox used to play their home games at Comiskey Park.

Friday?s quiz
Tom Seaver, Mike Piazza are the two players who have had their number retired by the Mets.

**************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??.

13) Happy Father?s Day to all the dads out there. Hope you all have a great day.

12) There are 25 guys in the major leagues right now whose dads also played in the big leagues.

11) New Orleans Pelicans traded Anthony Davis to the Lakers Saturday, for three players and three first round draft picks, one of which is the #4 pick in next week?s draft.

Celtics wouldn?t include Jayson Tatum in trade talks, which was a deal breaker for them.

10) There is no clock in baseball, except for the pitch clock:

Padres trailed 11-5 in the ninth inning Friday night, but tied the game and wound up winning 16-12 in extra innings. Horrific loss for the Rockies, who?ve played well recently.

9) Why do the Padres play Austin Hedges behind the plate every day?

He has a reputation as a great defensive catcher, but he?s hitting .217 at home, .154 on the road- it is like having two pitchers in the lineup. The guy can?t hit.

8) Dodgers led the Cubs 5-3 in 9th inning Friday night; Chicago had a guy on 2nd with two out, so tying run is at the plate. LA closer Kenley Jansen balks intentionally, so the runner can go to third base. Why?

Because when a runner is on second base, he can see the catcher?s signs, and relay them to the hitter; Jansen didn?t want that to happen, so he balked the runner to third and got the save.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Cubs put Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) on the IL
? Tigers put C Grayson Greiner (back) on IL.
? Indians traded P Brooks Pounders to the Mets for cash.

6) Pro golfer Patrick Reed hit a shot with a wedge on the 18th hole Friday, and he didn?t like it. He really, really didn?t like it.

He disliked it so much that he snapped the wedge in half over his knee, the way Bo Jackson used to do with his bat after he struck out. Looked like Kevin Costner in Tin Cup.

5) Cubs are considering putting a sportsbook in Wrigley Field, which would be interesting.

4) Angels DFA?d closer Cody Allen, who is getting $8.5M from the Halos this season; his ERA this year is 8.33, with 20 walks in 23 IP. Not good.

3) Phillies 8, Braves 5? Scary moment when Atlanta starter Sean Newcomb got drilled in the back of his head by a 102 mph liner off JT Realmuto?s bat. Newcomb left the game but is OK.

2) There are rumors that even though this is Bruce Bochy?s last year managing the Giants, he may not be done managing. Bochy could manage France in the next WBC (he was born there) or take a shot with another big league team, if that chance comes up. Who wouldn?t want to hire a guy who has won three World Series?

1) Christmas in June; the Phil Steele college football magazine came in the mail Saturday, marking the unofficial start to the college football season. Let the studying begin.

LEADING OFF: Astros' Alvarez opens fast, Newcomb hit in head
June 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

MAKING A NAME

Cuban rookie Yordan Alvarez is off to a smashing start for the injury-depleted Houston Astros, becoming just one of four players in major league history to hit four home runs in his first five games.

The 21-year-old is 8 for 17 so far. He's driven in eight runs, scored eight times and also drawn six walks.

Alvarez hit an upper-deck drive at Minute Maid Park on Saturday and joined Trevor Story, who hit six homers for Colorado in 2016, Yasiel Puig (Dodgers, 2013) and Mike Jacobs (Mets, 2005) for big starts.

Alvarez and the Astros take on Toronto.

CHECK THEM

Braves starter Sean Newcomb was forced to leave Saturday night's start against Philadelphia after being hit in the back of the head by a line drive off the bat of J.T. Realmuto. Newcomb walked off the field under his own power in Atlanta, escorted by two trainers. The ball was clocked at 102 mph and caromed off Newcomb's head and sailed into the netting behind the Phillies' dugout on the third base side. Realmuto covered his mouth with both hands as he ran to first base on what went as a ground-rule double. ... Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard exited his start on Saturday night after reaching for his right hamstring following a pitch. He quickly walked off the field with a bit of a limp in the seventh inning against St. Louis.

WANT HIM?

Cody Allen is available after the Los Angeles Angels designated the veteran reliever for assignment.

Allen was cut Saturday, a day after giving up four runs while getting only two outs at Tampa Bay. He is 0-2 with a 6.26 ERA and four saves in four chances, and was sidelined earlier this season with a back strain.

The 30-year-old Allen was signed to a one-year, $8.5 million contract in January after seven seasons with the Cleveland Indians.

BREAKING EVEN

The Angels (35-36) look to reach the .500 mark for the first time since April 15 when rookie Griffin Canning faces Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field. Los Angeles has had five previous chances to get back to the break-even mark and lost each time. Canning (2-2) is one of four pitchers in American League history to have five-or-more strikeouts in each of his first eight major league starts.

AP source: Yanks near deal to get Encarnación from Mariners
June 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) The New York Yankees acquired AL home run leader Edwin Encarnacion in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night, adding another feared slugger to what could be baseball's most powerful lineup when Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton return from injuries.

The Yankees also got cash in the deal while sending 19-year-old minor league pitcher Juan Then to Seattle. Encarnacion is making $20 million this season.

Speaking before the trade was announced, New York manager Aaron Boone declined comment. But asked about having room for another power bat, Boone coyly responded, ''There's always room for good players.''

The 36-year-old Encarnacion has hit 21 home runs this season. He has averaged 37 homers and 109 RBIs in his last seven years.

There had been speculation the Yankees would be in the market for a top pitcher as the July 31 approached, but the Bronx Bombers always have room for big boppers.

''We know Edwin is a really good hitter,'' Gleyber Torres said after homering for the AL East-leading Yankees in an 8-4 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Encarnacion was not on the field with the Mariners as they warmed up for their game at Oakland. The Yankees and Mariners announced the trade right after Seattle lost 11-2.

''Edwin did great things here for us. I really think a lot of him, how he went about his business here, knowing that this could probably happen,'' Mariners manager Scott Servais said. ''It's hard to go out and produce the way he did. He did everything we could ask him. He's leading the league in home runs, he's been awesome in our clubhouse. Certainly wish him the best.''

Encarnacion, a first baseman and designated hitter, is hitting .241 and is among the league leaders with 49 RBIs and 48 runs scored. The three-time All-Star moved from Cleveland to Seattle last December in a three-team trade that included Tampa Bay.

Encarnacion has 401 career home runs, including 18 in 69 games at the new Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees have been one of baseball's best teams despite a long list of injuries.

Stanton could return next week after being sidelined by biceps, shoulder and calf injuries, and Judge also is inching closer after he strained his left oblique in April. Both stars are on rehab assignments in Triple-A.

Encarnacion's arrival means more juggling for the Yankees, who will have a roster full of talented players once everyone returns from the injured list. Last month, they acquired first baseman/DH Kendrys Morales from Oakland, but he's struggled with New York.

Seattle either traded or let go many of its big-name players after last season, with Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz and Jean Segura among them. The new-look Mariners got off to a 13-2 start this year, but have since faded into last place in the AL West. They recently traded outfielder Jay Bruce to Philadelphia.

The Mariners said Then, who has been pitching in extended spring training, will report to Class A Everett. Originally signed by Seattle, he was traded to the Yankees after the 2017 season in a deal for pitcher Nick Rumbelow.

''We'll look at a lot of different guys as we continue to move down the road and do this rebuild thing,'' Servais said. ''We've gotten a lot of young prospects back. Unfortunately, they're not all here yet. It's our job here to take the guys we've got and get the most out of them and get them to continue to improve, and that's what we're going to do.''
