STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Andrew Cashner, Baltimore Orioles (8-3, 4.03 ERA, $1064):
Cashner has been cashing in for Orioles bettors. While Baltimore is terrible they've actually had a puncher's chance of winning when Cashner steps on the mound, going 5-1 over his last six starts. Over his last four starts Cashner is 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 0.80 WHIP.

Today, Cashner and Orioles are +130 underdogs against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays are just 5-11 over their previous 16 games at home and will start Clayton Richard who is 1-4 with a 6.51 ERA. With Toronto batting just .221 at home the Orioles could be a smart underdog play.

SLUMPING

Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies (8-6, 4.43 ERA, $209):
Don't let the 3-2 record over his last six starts fool you, Arrieta has been bad. During that span he has a 6.15 ERA and 1.66 WHIP, while giving up nine home runs.

The Phillies lock horns with the Mets today. Arrieta pitched against the Mets two weeks ago and gave up five runs and a pair of homers in six innings. The Phillies are +132 underdogs on the road.

THREE STRIKES

MAD MAX

Max Scherzer could have been our streaking pitcher for the day but we figured we'd give someone else a chance. Scherzer, on the other hand, hasn't been giving opposing batters much of a chance lately, going 6-0 with a ridiculous 0.94 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 83 strikouts in 57 innings over his last eight starts.

The Nationals are whopping -435 favorites at home against the Kansas City Royals and starter Glenn Sparkman who is 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA. If you want to back Scherzer for a better payout the Over 9.5 on his strikeout total might do the trick at -140. Mad Max has struck out at least 10 batters in five of his last six starts.

HOME IS WHERE THE HURT IS

T-Mobile Park in Seattle is supposed to be pitcher-friendly but it certainly hasn't been for today's Mariners starter Marco Gonzales. The lefty has gone 4-4 with an ERA of 6.00, WHIP of 1.52 and BAA of .303 at home this season.

The Mariners host the Athletics who are 4-1 in pitcher Chris Bassitt's last five starts on the road. While Gonzales has gone 2-0 against the A's in Oakland this year, you might be better off fading him at home tonight. The Mariners are +120 underdogs with the O/U installed at 9.5.

HERE'S JONNY!

The Rockies are +102 underdogs tonight in Arizona. It's been the Rockies batters that have gotten all the attention this year but pitcher Jon Gray is quietly putting together a nice season as well. The Rockies have gone 7-1 in Gray's last eight starts and over his last three starts he's gone 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA (with one of those starts coming in Arizona).

The D-Backs have gone 0-4 in Robbie Ray's last four starts and the right-hander has an ERA of 6.05 while giving up seven homers in 22 1-3 innings during that stretch. The Rockies are 6-1 in their last seven games in Arizona and 18-5 in the last 23 games of the head-to-head.

D'Arnaud homers in bottom of the 9th, Rays beat Yankees 4-3
July 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Travis d'Arnaud hit a two-out homer off Chad Green in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays past the New York Yankees 4-3 on Saturday.

Aaron Hicks had tied it at 3 in the top of the ninth for the Yankees, homering on a 2-2, two-out pitch from Colin Poche (2-1).

D'Arnaud's winning homer against Green (2-3) into the right-field seats got the Rays back within 7 1/2 games of the AL East-leading Yankees, who had won the first two games of a four-game series in extra innings. Tampa Bay is 3-9 against New York this season.

It was just New York's third loss in its last 19 games.

Nate Lowe hit a go-ahead two-run homer off CC Sabathia in the seventh that gave Tampa Bay a 3-2 lead.

Sabathia went a season-high seven innings, giving up three runs and seven hits.

Blake Snell allowed one run and five hits over five innings. He went 2-3 with a 9.64 ERA in six starts last month.

Brett Gardner homered in the second for the Yankees.

TWINS 7, RANGERS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Michael Pineda struck out a season-high nine in six innings, Jason Castro had two hits and three RBIs, and Minnesota topped Texas.

Pineda (6-4) gave up five hits and a run on a solo homer in the sixth inning by Elvis Andrus.

Marwin Gonzalez homered for Minnesota. Taylor Rogers picked up his 12th save with 2 1/3 scoreless innings and five strikeouts.

Jesse Chavez (3-4) surrendered five runs - four earned - on five hits and two walks over five innings for Texas.

Shin-Soo Choo had three hits and Willie Calhoun added a two-run homer for the Rangers, who have lost six of seven.

NATIONALS 6, ROYALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer worked seven strong innings, Kurt Suzuki homered and Washington blanked Kansas City.

Scherzer (9-5) allowed four hits and struck out 11 with one walk. He has won seven straight starts.

Kansas City starter Glenn Sparkman (2-5) gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings.

Alex Gordon had two hits and a walk for the Royals, who have lost eight of 10.

Juan Soto had two RBI singles.

MARLINS 5, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Yadiel Rivera hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth and Miami beat Atlanta for the second time this season.

Caleb Smith (4-4) allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings in his first start since June 6.

Sergio Romo gave up a single in the ninth before recording three straight outs for his 16th save in 17 chances as Miami snapped a five-game skid.

Ronald Acuna Jr. led off the first inning with his 21st homer. Rookie Austin Riley homered in the second, but the Atlanta offense lost its momentum after a run-scoring single by Nick Markakis in the third gave the Braves a 4-2 lead.

Max Fried (9-4) allowed five runs on 11 hits, including the homers by Harold Ramirez and Starlin Castro, in five innings.

ORIOLES 8, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Andrew Cashner won his third straight start, Renato Nunez hit a two-run home run and Baltimore beat Toronto.

Stevie Wilkerson hit a solo home run and Jonathan Villar scored three times. The Orioles used a five-run fourth inning to win their third straight.

Cashner (9-3) allowed three hits and one run, walked none and struck out four in seven innings.

Jimmy Yacabonis struck out the side on 13 pitches in the eighth and Shawn Armstrong finished for Baltimore.

Cashner retired his first 10 batters before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a groundball single up the middle in the fourth. Guerrero advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Biggio, but that was it for the Blue Jays, who scored just once for the second straight game.

Toronto left-hander Clayton Richard (1-5) allowed six runs, three earned, and seven hits in six innings.

INDIANS 7, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Francisco Lindor homered twice, Roberto Perez connected on a tiebreaking shot in the eighth inning, and Cleveland won its fifth straight at Great American Ball Park.

The Indians have won nine of 11 games in Cincinnati and lead the intrastate series 62-50. They've taken two of three this season.

Cleveland has won five in a row overall, matching its longest winning streak of the season.

Shane Bieber (8-3) allowed four hits in eight innings - three by Yasiel Puig , who had a two-run homer.

Lindor hit his fourth leadoff homer of the season and hit another solo shot in the fifth.

Perez had three singles and a two-run homer in the eighth off Michael Lorenzen (0-2). Jake Bauers singled with the bases loaded in the ninth as the Indians pulled away.

ASTROS 4, ANGELS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Yuli Gurriel homered for the fourth straight game and Gerrit Cole pitched seven scoreless innings before two relievers completed the four-hitter as Houston beat Los Angeles.

Gurriel's solo shot extended Houston's lead to 3-0 in the sixth and gave him a 10-game hitting streak and the longest stretch of consecutive games with home runs in his career.

Cole (9-5) scattered three hits over seven innings while striking out nine to win his fifth straight decision.

Ryan Pressly allowed one hit in the eighth and Collin McHugh struck out the side in the ninth to help Houston to its sixth win in seven games.

Andrew Heaney (1-3) allowed five hits and two runs in five innings for his second straight loss.

PIRATES 12, BREWERS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kevin Newman and Starling Marte each drove in three runs, leading Pittsburgh over Milwaukee.

Newman had four hits, including a home run. Melky Cabrera also homered for the Pirates.

Dario Agrazal (2-0) allowed two runs in six innings after being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. The rookie right-hander gave up those runs on two homers, one by Mike Moustakas in the first and another by Yasmani Grandal two innings later.

Adrian Houser (2-3) gave up more than three runs for the second time in 19 appearances - including five starts - this season, allowing five on seven hits in four innings.

CUBS 6, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester pitched into the seventh inning, and the Cubs beat All-Star Lucas Giolito and the crosstown White Sox.

Lester (8-6) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs - one earned - and six hits.

Giolito (11-3) got knocked out in a five-run fifth. He matched a season high by allowing six runs, walked a season-high five and gave up four hits in four-plus innings.

Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber had two-run doubles for the Cubs.

Yoan Moncada had two doubles, scored two runs and drove in one. But the White Sox lost their second straight after winning five of six.

METS 6, PHILLIES 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Tomas Nido hit a three-run double that put New York ahead to stay in a victory over Philadelphia that included four hits batters.

Jeff McNeil had four hits for the fourth time this season and the Mets snapped a six-game losing streak to Philadelphia that marked their longest in more than a decade. New York won for only the third time in 12 games overall.

Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer against his former team and Maikel Franco also went deep for the Phillies.

Noah Syndergaard (6-4) allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings in his second start since coming off the injured list.

Struggling closer Edwin Diaz got three outs for his 19th save in 23 tries.

Phillies right-hander Jake Arrieta (8-7) took the loss. He gave up a season-high 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

RED SOX 10, TIGERS 6

DETROIT (AP) - Andrew Benintendi and Mookie Betts finished a homer short of the cycle as Boston beat Detroit in a game delayed more than four hours at the start by rain.

Benintendi went 4 for 6 with two singles, a double, triple and an RBI. Betts was 3 for 5 with a single, double, triple, a walk and two RBIs.

Jeimer Candelario homered twice for the Tigers, who lost for the 24th time in 27 home games.

Rick Porcello (6-7) struggled, but remained undefeated against his former team in five starts. He gave up six runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies (7-2, 3.89 ERA, $7):
Nola is on fire over his last three starts with an ERA of 0.39, WHIP of 0.70 and 28 strikouts in 23 innings. He's coming off an impressive eight inning shutout of the Braves in Atlanta.

Today the Phillies are small -116 favorites on the road against the Mets today. Philadelphia is 5-1 over Nola's last six road starts and are 6-1 in Nola's previous starts versus the Mets. The Mets slide into this one, having lost nine of their previous 12 games.

SLUMPING

Ivan Nova, Chicago White Sox (3-7, 5.92 ERA, $163):
Nova has been awful all season and it hasn't gotten any better. His overall numbers on the season are terrible (including a 1.56 WHIP and .322 BAA) and he's even worse at home where he's gone 0-4 with a 8.31 ERA and .340 BAA through seven starts.

Today, Nova and the White Sox will be at home as they wrap up their two-game series against their North Side rival Cubs. The Cubs will start Kyle Hendricks who has a 5.53 ERA and .293 BAA in eight road starts. The Cubbies are -192 faves but with two shaky pitchers and the wind blowing at 13 mph towards right field, the Over 10.5 looks like the best bet.

Springer helps Astros beat Angels despite 2 homers by Trout
July 7, 2019
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) George Springer hit a game-ending, RBI single in the 10th inning and the Houston Astros beat the Angels 11-10 Sunday after a violent collision at home plate knocked Los Angeles catcher Jonathan Lucroy out of the game.

The Astros' Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam to homer in his fifth straight game, and All-Star Ryan Pressly (2-1) allowed one hit in a scoreless 10th for the win.

Josh Reddick led off Houston's 10th with a double off Taylor Cole (0-1) before Springer hit a ball to the right-center gap with one out to give Houston the victory.

Mike Trout homered twice for the Angels, who watched Lucroy get carted off in the eighth inning after being bowled over by Jake Marisnick. Lucroy was taken to a hospital, and the team said he would get a CT scan and be evaluated for a concussion and nose fracture.

INDIANS 11, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Greg Allen homered and tripled among his career-high four hits, Trevor Bauer stayed hot with seven solid innings and the Indians beat the Reds.

Jake Bauers hit a two-run homer and Tyler Naquin and Jason Kipnis added solo shots, helping Cleveland to a season-high sixth straight win.

Bauer (8-6) improved to 4-0 with a 2.90 earned-run average over his last six starts.

Tyler Mahle (2-9) took the loss.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, ROCKIES 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Alex Young tossed six no-hit innings in his second career start, Eduardo Escobar had three RBIs and the Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep with a win over the Rockies.

Young (2-0) was stellar in his Chase Field debut, allowing one batter over the minimum after walking Tony Wolters in the third inning.

The 23-year-old left-hander was replaced by Yoshihisa Hirano to open the seventh inning after 71 pitches. Trevor Story hit Hirano's first pitch down the third base line and beat Jake Lamb's throw for Colorado's first hit.

Nick Ahmed hit a two-run homer and Escobar finished a homer shy of the cycle for Arizona, which enters the All-Star break above .500 at 46-45. Christian Walker added a two-run single off German Marquez (8-4).

RAYS 2, YANKEES 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Charlie Morton struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings to help the Rays split a four-games series with the AL East-leading Yankees.

Morton (10-2) allowed one run, five hits and one walk in lowering his AL-best ERA to 2.32. The AL All-Star has given up two or fewer runs in 15 of 19 starts.

Emilio Pagan, the fourth Tampa Bay reliever, worked the ninth to get his fifth save and complete the five-hitter.

Brett Gardner homered and James Paxton (5-4) gave up two runs and seven hits with 11 strikeouts over six innings for the Yankees, who have a 6 1/2 lead over Tampa Bay.

PHILLIES 8, METS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Nola held the Mets hitless into the sixth inning, Jay Bruce homered twice and the Philadelphia Phillies quieted New York.

Rookie Pete Alonso hit his 30th home run to break up Nola's no-hit bid.

Bruce drove in four runs against his former team and Rhys Hoskins homered as the Phillies took two of three in the series.

The Phils headed into the All-Star break at 47-43 - they were 53-42 at this point last year, before adding Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Andrew McCutchen and more in an offseason push.

The feuding NL East rivals kept their cool and there were no warnings from the umpires, a day after a tense game in which Jake Arrieta hit Todd Frazier and later said if the Mets veteran was still upset, ''he can come see me and I'll put a dent in his skull.''

BRAVES 4, MARLINS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Josh Donaldson capped his strong first-half finish by hitting a two-run homer and Charlie Culberson's defensive play helped the Braves escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to beat the Marlins.

The Braves are 10-2 against the Marlins this season and 24-7 the past two seasons.

Dallas Keuchel (2-2) allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings in his fourth start since signing with Atlanta on June 7.

Trevor Richards (3-10) took the loss.

PIRATES 6, BREWERS 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Red-hot rookie Bryan Reynolds hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lift the Pirates over the Brewers in their final game before the All-Star break.

The estimated 403-foot shot cleared the seats beyond the fence in right-center field and bounced toward the Allegheny River. Reynolds' seventh homer of the season came after Kevin Kramer walked and Adam Frazier singled off reliever Junior Guerra (3-2).

Reynolds also hit an RBI double in the fifth and is batting .342 with a .950 OPS.

Brewers star Christian Yelich did not play and pulled out of Monday's All-Star Home Run Derby with a back injury. It's unclear if Yelich will still play in Tuesday's All-Star Game.

NATIONALS 5, ROYALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon doubled in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, Brian Dozier and Victor Robles homered, and the Nationals beat the Royals.

Washington has won 10 of 12 to climb past Philadelphia into second place in the NL East. Since sinking to 19-31 on May 23, the Nationals have gone 28-11 and lost only one of 13 series.

Starting pitching has been a big reason for the turnaround. In extending a trend, left-hander Patrick Corbin struck out 11 and scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings. He left with a 2-0 lead before Sean Doolittle (6-2) blew it.

Jake Dieman (0-6) couldn't hold it for Kansas City.

WHITE SOX 3, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Ivan Nova pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning for his first home win in eight tries, Eloy Jimenez and Jose Abreu homered, and the Chicago White Sox beat the crosstown Cubs.

Nova (4-7) finally picked up a victory at Guaranteed Rate Field after going 0-4 with an 8.31 ERA in his first seven starts there. The right-hander allowed five hits over 5 2/3 innings, struck out four and walked one.

Jimenez hit a long, two-run drive to center against Kyle Hendricks (7-7) in the fourth.

GIANTS 1, CARDINALS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Evan Longoria homered with one out in the seventh inning to break up Jack Flaherty's bid for a no-hitter, and the Giants held on to beat the Cardinals.

The Giants managed only one baserunner against Flaherty (4-6) until Longoria drove an 0-1 pitch into the left field stands. Longoria has hit five of his 12 home runs this month.

Jeff Samardzija (6-7) pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed four hits to beat the Cardinals for the first time in four career starts at Oracle Park.

RANGERS 4, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Rougned Odor's three-run homer in the 11th inning gave the Rangers a win against the Twins.

Odor's 13th homer of the season, into the bullpens in left-center field, came off Minnesota left-hander Adalberto Mejia (0-2). Mejia walked Joey Gallo and Asdrubal Cabrera ahead of Odor's one-out home run.

Shawn Kelley (4-2) pitched two innings for Texas, which had lost six of its previous seven games and three straight series.

The Rangers finally broke through in a game that had been tied since the fourth inning. Danny Santana singled to drive in Gallo in the fourth with one of his four hits.

RED SOX 6, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - David Price pitched one-run ball over five innings, Christian Vazquez and Xander Bogaerts each drove in two runs, and the Red Sox beat the Tigers to complete a three-game sweep.

Boston has won four straight and 15 of 22 entering the All-Star break.

Price struck out six, walked two and allowed four hits. He's allowed 15 earned runs over his past 10 starts, going 6-0.

Detroit played the final eight innings without designated hitter Miguel Cabrera, who was ejected for arguing a called third strike. The Tigers lost for the 14th time in 16 games, falling to 6-25 since June 1.

The first two games of the series finished after midnight because of lengthy rain delays, but the series finale was played under bright sunshine.

BLUE JAYS 6, ORIOLES 1

TORONTO (AP) - Trent Thornton pitched six shutout innings to win for the first time in four starts, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a two-run home run and the Blue Jays beat the Orioles to avoid a three-game sweep.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits and scored twice and Teoscar Hernandez drove in a pair as the Blue Jays snapped a three-game home losing streak in their final game before the All-Star break.

Held to one run in each of the first two games of the series, Toronto scored at least six for the ninth time in 11 games.

Thornton (3-6) allowed three hits, walked none and struck out five.

PADRES 5, DODGERS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice and had four RBIs and Manuel Margot also homered Sunday and the Padres rolled into the All-Star break on a three-game winning streak after beating the Dodgers.

Joey Lucchesi (7-4) held the Dodgers in check into the seventh inning while Margot hit a home run for the second consecutive day as the Padres handed Los Angeles its first three-game losing streak at home this season.

Max Muncy and Justin Turner homered for the Dodgers, who still closed out the first half with a major league-best 60 victories. They became the 15th team in major league history to win 60 games before the break when they defeated the Padres on Thursday, but lost the last three games of the series.

Ross Stripling (3-3) took the loss.

ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 4

SEATTLE (AP) - Matt Olson hit a home run for the second straight game to lead a five-run first inning and the Athletics powered past the Mariners.

The win gave the Athletics their seventh win in nine games, and ninth in their last 12. They are 18-8 since June 9, thanks in part to a string of 12 consecutive games with home runs that continued Sunday.

Olson's 19th homer, a three-run shot to right field off opener Matt Carasiti (0-1) in the first, and Marcus Semien's solo homer in the second helped the A's carve out a 6-0 lead that took the pressure of Oakland starter Daniel Mengden (4-1).

Home Run Derby Best Bet
July 7, 2019
By VI News

MLB Home Run Derby Betting Preview

After this weekend we've reached the one week of the entire year that's as slow as slow gets for sports bettors: the MLB All-Star break. And while I for one tend to welcome the slow period given what lies ahead with football season on deck, it doesn't mean that bettors have to completely stay away from beer and pizza money type action in baseball with the HR Derby and the All-Star game itself.

Editor's Note: Christian Yelich will not participate in the 2019 Home Run Derby due to a back injury. Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman will take his place.

It's this year's HR Derby that has sparked a bit more excitement then usual for the event given all the young, growing talent that's in the field, including the reigning NL MVP in Christian Yelich. Yelich has been dubbed with the ?#1 seed? for the event thanks to him having the most HR's this year of any competitor, but it also means he's got to face the #8 seed ? who's got the fewest regular season HR's ? in Vlad Guerrero Jr.

Yet, the message defensively will be just as stern this time around, as they can't go around giving up easy yards and points like they did and expect to win too many games. But if we can use last year as any indication, we should expect the Riders defense to step up from here on out, because last season's visit to Ottawa in Week 2 was the only time all year Saskatchewan allowed more then 34 points against. Welcoming a Toronto team that looked awful last week for the home opener is a great situation for this Riders defense to get back on track, and it's hard to believe that they won't be able to to some degree.

Vladdy has been the top prospect in baseball for some time now, and with his bloodlines in the game, he's not your generic worst seed in the event. In fact, he's tied with Mets slugger Pete Alonso for the 3rd best odds (+450) to win the event, as it's hard not to like his chances if he gets by Yelich in that opening round. It was 12 years ago that Vladdy Sr won the HR Derby, and wouldn't it be fitting for Jr's first time on the big stage ? because the Blue Jays aren't seeing any big stages anytime soon ? to be claiming a HR Derby crown.

So if you are looking for some action during the slowest time of the year in sports, the HR Derby is probably the best bang for your buck in terms of excitement, as long as money management is still practiced. Here are the odds for this year's event along with one recommendation for a guy who has already gotten my support.

MLB HR Derby Odds

Josh Bell (+265)
Christian Yelich (OFF)
Pete Alonso (+450)
Vladimir Guerrero Jr (+450)
Joc Pederson (+900)
Carlos Santana (+950)
Alex Bregman (+1150)
Ronald Acuna Jr (+1300)
Matt Champman (TBA)

Odds and Field Subject to Change

Given that it is a bracket format event, siding with one guy from each side of the bracket can keep rooting interests strong the deeper the event goes, and if you are lucky enough to have both guys in the finals, at the current odds listed, it doesn't matter which two guys you've got, you'll be guaranteeing yourself some profit.

Yet, this is still more of a ?need action? type event to bet on as opposed to the business-like nature anyone's day-to-day handicapping should be about, and making too many plays before hand on the Derby can end up costing you too many units then you ever envisioned having at risk for this event. With live betting options available as the event goes on, you can always feed the action junkie part of you that way, and that's definitely something to consider.

But for the outset of the event, it's only one guy I'm looking to back, and as has been the case in two of the past four HR Derby's, I think we see the hometown crowd in Cleveland see their own man come home with the crown.

MLB HR Derby Best Bet: Carlos Santana +950

The home crowd storyline took center stage in 2015 when Cincinnati's Todd Frazier went the distance in this event and captured the feel-good story of the All-Star break in doing so. After that it was all about the big boys in Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge showing off their brute strength in the derby, but last year it was all hometown love again as Bryce Harper won the thing at Nationals Park in what became his last All-Star scenario in a Nats jersey. The energy that Harper and Frazier fed off in those events was palpable, and given how fatigued guys can get with swing after swing in the derby, that extra boost of energy never hurts.

Enter Carlos Santana.

The current Cleveland Indians player who began is MLB career in the city, tested the free agency waters in the winter of 2017 and signed a solid deal with the Phillies. Santana was only able to play out one of his signed three-year deal in a Phillies uniform as the winter of 2017 saw him traded twice, to have his final destination be the spot where he started playing baseball at this level; Cleveland.

Santana's eye at the plate and his ability to switch hit have always made him a valuable commodity to this Indians organization, and even though he left in an effort to get the most money he could to set up his family as much as possible, Indians fans feel like him being back int he mix this year just feels right. He's already slugged 19 HR's this year for Cleveland, and while he's not your prototypical power hitter that we get in this event, the in-depth knowledge of the ballpark and his decision on which side of the box to bat from could be that minor edge he needs to survive and advance.

The longer Santana stays around in this bracket tournament, the more energy that Indians crowd will give him, and that never hurts. He's got three very young guys - both in terms of MLB service time and actual age ? on his side of the bracket with him, and youthful exuberance catching up to those guys in an event like this is always something to think about.

And at nearly 10-1 odds, the price is there to potentially turn a beer and pizza bet into one that's more lobster and wine. Potentially not a bad way to grind through the dog days of summer.

Quote of the Day
?Major League Baseball?s turning this game into a joke. They own Rawlings, and you?ve got Manfred up here saying it might be the way they center the pill. They own the f?ing company. If any other $40 billion company bought out a $400 million company and the product changed dramatically, it?s not a guess as to what happened. We all know what happened. Manfred the first time he came in, what?d he say? He said we want more offense. All of a sudden he comes in, the balls are juiced? It?s not coincidence. We?re not idiots.?
Justin Verlander, who is a pitcher, by the way

Tuesday?s Den: ACC football knowledge??

Boston College- Went 7-5 or 7-6 five of last six years; since 2014, Eagles are 11-2-1 vs spread as a road underdog. Last two years, BC is 10-3-1 vs spread coming off win. Junior QB Brown already has 22 career starts; their top four rushers are all back.

Clemson- Tigers won 10+ games eight years in a row; they won four of last five bowls, with three of those wins by 27+ points. Clemson covered 15 of last 19 neutral field games; they?ve been an underdog once the last four years.

Duke- Blue Devils won last three bowls, scoring 44-36-56 points; they?ll have a new, more mobile QB this year, but Cutcliffe is a QB guru. Last four years, Duke is 12-19-1 vs spread in ACC games. Average total in Duke?s last five bowls: 79.0.

Florida State- Seminoles are 12-13 SU the last two years, after going 59-9 from 2012-16. FSU is -17 in turnovers the last two years, 8-12 vs spread in last 20 home games, 9-13-2 in last 24 games as a favorite. Average total in FSU?s last five bowls: 66.8.

Georgia Tech- Collins went 15-10 at Temple; changing from option attack to more traditional offense can be dicey. Tech has only 9 of 22 starters back, with an inexperienced offensive line. Opening at Clemson will be a reality check, but Collins is a good coach.

Louisville- Cardinals went 2-10 LY after eight winning years in a row, so Petrino got the boot and Satterfield comes in from Appalachian State (47-16). Last three years, Louisville is 12-26 vs spread (1-11 LY), 3-11 in non-conference games.

Miami- Mark Richt went 26-13 in three years; not good enough. Defensive-minded Manny Diaz is the new coach; he has a new QB, inexperience on OL. Since 2012, Miami is 4-9-1 as road underdogs. From 2015-17, they were +34 in turnovers, were -1 LY.

North Carolina- Mack Brown was on TV last five years; now he is back on sidelines after UNC went 5-17 last two years under the cloud of an academic scandal. Tar Heels lot last three bowls; their last bowl win was 2013. UNC will be breaking in a new QB this year.

NC State- Wolfpack had five straight winning seasons, went 11-5 in ACC last two years, after going 17-31 the six years before that. State has a new QB and only two starters back on OL, so the offense (4 starters back overall) could take a step back this year.

Pittsburgh- Pitt lost last four bowls, with pair of 1-point losses; their last bowl win was in 2014, over Bowling Green (30-27, +6.5). Under Narduzzi, Panthers are 12-6 vs spread as road underdogs, 5-10-1 as home favorites.

Syracuse- Orangemen had their first winning season (10-3) in five years LY; they won their last four bowls (were favored in only one of those), with last bowl loss in 2004. Under Babers, Syracuse is 9-3 vs spread as a road underdog.

Virginia- LY?s 8-5 record was first winning season in seven years; they even pitched a shutout in their bowl game. Since 2014, Cavaliers are 15-7 vs spread outside the ACC- they start couple of sophs, three juniors on OL, so they?ll be very solid the next two years.

Virginia Tech- In three years under Fuente, Hokies are 9-5 vs spread as home favorites, 7-13 vs spread in all their other games; they?ve got 10 starters back on defense TY. QB Willis has 20 career starts; six of their top seven rushers are back.

Wake Forest- Deacons are 22-17 SU last three years, winning bowls all three years while scoring 42 ppg. Wake is 4-0-1 vs spread in lat five bowls; they covered 10 of last 13 games as a road underdog; last four years, they?re 16-8-1 vs spread coming off a loss.

Your complete guide to All-Star week

Lost among all the arguments about All-Star voting and All-Star snubs is that All-Star week is really just a big celebration of the sport. Baseball fans in Cleveland can attend the fan festival, get to see the up-and-coming stars of tomorrow, enjoy sluggers slugging during the Home Run Derby and then watch the best players in the sport -- most of them, at least -- in Tuesday's All-Star Game.

Here's a guide to three days of fun:

Monday: Home Run Derby

Pete Alonso's big swing could deliver big results in the Home Run Derby on Monday night. Kathy Willens/AP Photo

Time:
8 p.m. ET (ESPN)
2018 winner: Bryce Harper, Washington Nationals

Format:
An eight-player bracket, with the higher seed going second. Batters have four minutes per round with one timeout allowed per round (and two in the finals).

2019 MLB All-Star Game

This year's All-Star Game is Tuesday at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Here's what you need to know about the teams and all the festivities. Rosters, schedules, analysis

Participants:
Matt Chapman, Oakland Athletics (No. 1 seed, stepping in for the injured Christian Yelich); Pete Alonso, New York Mets (2); Josh Bell, Pittsburgh Pirates (3); Alex Bregman, Houston Astros (4); Joc Pederson, Dodgers (5); Ronald Acuna Jr., Atlanta Braves (6); Carlos Santana, Cleveland Indians (7); Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Toronto Blue Jays (8)

It's going to be hard to top the past two Home Run Derbies -- Aaron Judge winning 2017 while dueling Giancarlo Stanton with a barrage of long-range missiles, and then Harper pulling out a dramatic, last-second victory over Kyle Schwarber at his home park -- but this field is loaded and should provide some fun energy with all the young guys.

Also, for the first time there is the added incentive of $1 million going to the winner, as the overall pool for the participants increased from $725,000 to $2.5 million.

No wonder Alonso has actually been practicing for the event. The rookie slugger has the opportunity to basically double his 2019 salary.

Bregman and Pederson have participated in previous Home Run Derbies (Pederson lost in the 2015 final to Todd Frazier), so that might help them. Yelich is the first reigning MVP winner to participate since Albert Pujols in 2009. Acu?a and Guerrero give us two of the most exciting young players in the game, and the hometown fans will root on Santana.

Bell, however, might be the favorite (he and Yelich were the top picks in Vegas, before Yelich pulled out), as his raw power might top even Alonso's. His seven home runs of 440-plus feet lead the majors, and he has cranked two into the Allegheny River beyond the right-field stands at PNC Park -- becoming just the fourth player in PNC history to reach the river on the fly.

Tuesday: All-Star Game
Will Mike Trout add to the success he's already enjoyed in the All-Star Game? Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP Photo

Time:
7:30 p.m. ET (Fox)
2018 MVP: Alex Bregman, Astros

Format:
Nine innings, doesn't count. The past two All-Star Games both went 10 innings. The AL has won six in a row (after winning 12 in a row with one tie from 1997 to 2009).

The last time All-Star festivities were held in Cleveland was 1997, when Randy Johnson started against Greg Maddux. The AL starting lineup featured six future Hall of Famers (Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Cal Ripken, Ivan Rodriguez, Roberto Alomar) plus Alex Rodriguez. The NL starting lineup featured five future Hall of Famers (Maddux, Craig Biggio, Tony Gwynn, Mike Piazza, Jeff Bagwell) plus Barry Bonds and Larry Walker. There were eight more future Hall of Famers on the benches, plus Roger Clemens and Mark McGwire.

The first four NL pitchers were Maddux, Curt Schilling, Kevin Brown and Pedro Martinez. Now that is an All-Star pitching staff. Indians catcher Sandy Alomar played the hero for the hometown fans with a two-run homer in the seventh inning off Giants lefty Shawn Estes, giving the AL a 3-1 win.

Players to watch

? The NL starting outfield of Yelich, Acu?a and Cody Bellinger is third-youngest outfield by average age in All-Star history, trailing only the 1957 NL trio of Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Frank Robinson and the 1940 AL trio of Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Charlie Keller. Yelich and Bellinger, battling for MVP honors, both head into the break with at least 30 home runs.

? Mike Trout, Angels. The two-time All-Star MVP might be having his best season yet. He's 7-for-15 with five extra-base hits (including two home runs) in All-Star games.

? Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dodgers. The likely NL starter, Ryu is 10-3 with a 1.73 ERA. He has allowed more than two runs in a start just twice all season -- one game with three runs (but just one earned) and one bad seven-run outing at Coors Field in which he allowed three home runs. He has walked just 10 batters in 109 innings. He's joined on the NL roster by teammates Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler, making the Dodgers just the fifth team in 20 years with three starting pitchers on an All-Star roster.

? Javier Baez, Chicago Cubs. Last year's NL MVP runner-up started the 2018 game at second base but starts at shortstop this year. He joins Bobby Grich and Granny Hamner as the only players to start All-Star Games at both shortstop and second base.

? Justin Verlander, Astros. He started in 2012 and could be the AL starter seven years later, as he's 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA and has held batters to a .162 average. After finishing as the Cy Young runner-up in 2018 and 2016, he's intent on adding a bookend to his 2011 trophy.

? Francisco Lindor, Indians. He isn't starting, but he'll play in front of the hometown fans. And maybe like Alomar in 1997, he walks away with MVP honors.
