STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Gerrit Cole, Houston Astros (9-5, 3.09 ERA, $9): Now here?s a guy who probably would have been fine if there had been no All-Star break. Cole has been straight dealing with a 1.76 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP while limiting opponents to .192 batting average over his last eight starts. He has allowed three earned runs over his last four start while racking up 30 Ks. So, yeah. That qualifies as ?Streaking? we guess. Cole and the ?Stros are -200 road faves with a total of 10 for tonight?s matchup against the Rangers.

SLUMPING

Yu Darvish, Chicago Cubs (2-4, 5.01 ERA, $-616): Darvish is in another rough stretch, particularly at Wrigley Field. The right-hander has a 6.62 ERA and has surrendered six long balls over his last three starts. But since signing with the Cubs heading into 2018, Darvish has made 13 starts at Wrigley, where he has a 6.03 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. This afternoon the Cubs are -165 home favorites against Chris Archer and the Pirates. Bettors beware.


I'M IN MIAMI BITCH!

Marlins starter Caleb Smith should be excited for his first home start since May 14. The southpaw has been outstanding in Miami going 3-1 with a 1.84 ERA and .176 BAA.

Smith and the Marlins will be hosting Jason Vargas and the New York Mets today. Miami averages the fewest runs per game in the majors with 3.55 and has gone 5-0-1 to the Under in their last six games. With the Mets 8-3-1 to the Under in Vargas's last 12 starts the Under 8 looks like an intriguing play.

A GRAY DAY

Cincinnati's Sonny Gray will take to the mound tonight against Rockies starter Jon Gray. The Reds hurler is 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA but has never pitched at Coors Field. It could be a rude welcome for Sonny in a ballpark that has seen an average total of 13.77 runs per game this year.

That said, there are some strong Under trends in play. Jon Gray is one of the few pitchers that throws well at Coors, going 4-1 with a 3.35 ERA at home in 2019. And although the Over has cashed in eight of the Rockies last 10 home games, Colorado is 5-2-1 to the Under in Jon Gray's last eight starts.

The Under has also hit in each of the last seven meetings between these two sides in Colorado. The O/U is installed at 12 for today's clash and the Rockies are -132 favorites.

12) If you follow the NFL, play fantasy football or wager on games, I highly recommend Warren Sharp?s 2019 Football Handbook, which you can get on Amazon. Tremendous amount of good NFL knowledge.

If you watched the 4-part series Showtime did on sports gambling last winter, Sharp is the brains behind the football wagering of pro gambler Bill Krackomberger, who was featured in the series. If you?re betting $3,000 a game, you better have some serious knowledge on your side, and Sharp possesses that knowledge.

11) Starting August 1st, Aria, Vdara and Bellagio are increasing their resort fees from $39 a day to $45 a day, as MGM increases all their resort fees.

Resort fees are an artificial way of ripping off tourists; it?d be less offensive if they just added $45 a day to the damn room rates.

Those three hotels are expensive enough; people like myself are going to stop heading west for vacations if the airlines and hotels keep jacking up their rates.

9) Interesting article on the Interweb this week about how NBA trainers believe that kids who play basketball year-round, with no breaks, are more likely to break down physically as they get older. Parents are more and more having their kids specialize in one sport at an earlier age; there are varied opinions on whether this is a good idea.

Guys who were trainers 20-30 years ago were saying how players back then would take a few weeks off after the season to re-charge, and also do non-basketball conditioning stuff during the summer, rather than just be in the gym every day.

8) Alex Bregman needed four stitches to close a cut on his chin after he took a bad-hop single to the face in Thursday night?s loss to the Rangers.

7) Oklahoma City Thunder traded Russell Westbrook to Houston for Chris Paul late Thursday; Rockets also sent two protected 1st-round picks (?24 and ?26, both protected Nos. 1-4) and two pick swaps (?21 and ?25) to the Thunder, who should probably host the draft for the next several years.

Oklahoma City is already working on trading Paul, undoubtedly for more draft picks. For the record, Paul (34) is four years older than Westbrook.

Bad news for the State Farm Insurance people, who now have to shoot a whole new set of commercials with Paul off the Rockets.

The Mariners look to pick themselves up and dust themselves off after losing to the Angels in Friday's emotional home game for Anaheim. They honored the late LHP Tyler Skaggs with all players wearing his name and number in the first home game since the pitcher's death. They ended up going out and getting a combined no-hitter in the 13-0 rout of the visitors.

Seattle is now a dismal 21-45 across the past 66 gawmes overall, and they're just 8-22 in the past 30 games inside the division. In addition, they're 1-4 in the past five vs. RHP, including 0-4 in the past four on the road against a right-handed starting pitcher. The Mariners also have struggled in their past 11 showings on Saturday, going a poor 1-10. The Angels are 18-6 in the past 24 at home against teams iwth a losing record, and 41-19 in the past 60 against teams with an overall losing mark, too. Despite the no-hitter on Friday, Seattle is still 9-4 in the past 13 trips to the Big A.

The Braves and Padres battle with RHP Julio Teheran pitching for the visitors and LHP Joey Lucchesi working for the home side. Atlanta has won seven of the past eight inside the NL West, and they're 4-1 in the past five road games against a southpaw. Atlanta is also 10-4 in the past 14 games on the road, too. They have fared well behind Teheran, going 9-3 over his past 12 starts and 5-2 in his past seven on the road, too. They're also 5-1 in Teheran's past six assignments against teams with an overall losing record.

For the home team, San Diego is an impressive 8-2 in the past 10 against teams with an overall winninf record. However, they're just 2-5 in the past seven against National League East clubs, while going 0-5 in the past five at home and 0-4 in the past four at Petco Park vs. RHP. Lucchesi has been an NL East killer, however, as San Diego is 6-1 in his past seven starts against the division. Friday's home loss was a rarity for the Padres, as Atlanta is still just 7-19 in the past 26 meetings in San Diego. The under has connected in six of the past seven in this series, while going 5-2 in Teheran's past seven outings against the Padres.

Weather Report
Saturday's weather looks good for the afternoon affairs. Into the evening, we'll see very little precipitation, either. However, the Twins-Indians game at Progressive Field in Cleveland will feature a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing in from left field. The only other MLB venue affected by the elements will be Globe Life Park in Arlington, as the Astros and Rangers enjoy a 10-13 mph wind blowing out to right field.

It's an All-Star pitching matchup in Miami on Sunday afternoon when RHP Jacob deGrom takes the hill against RHP Sandy Alcantara and the Marlins. The Mets are an impressive 18-8 in deGrom's past 26 road outings against teams with a losing record, but they're 1-6 in his past seven overall on the road, while going 3-13 in his past 16 outings and 0-7 in his past seven showings on a Sunday. The Marlins haven't fared much better, going 0-4 in Alcantara's past four home starts, and 1-4 in his past five overall. They're also 0-5 in his past five against teams with a losing record, too.

It's a solid pitching matchup when RHP Zack Greinke toes the slab for the Diamondbacks against RHP Miles Mikolas and the Cardinals at Busch Stadium at 2:15 p.m. ET on Sunday. Arizona has won six of the past seven starts by Greinke, and they're a perfect 5-0 in his past five outings against the NL Central. He has made a living against the dregs of the league, too, as Arizona is 37-14 in the past 51 starts by Greinke against teams with a losing overall mark. While the Cards have been sliding lately, they're 12-5 in Mikolas' past 17 home outings, and 6-1 in his past seven against the NL West. However, they have won just three times over his past 10 starts overall.

We get lefty on lefty crime in the Sunday Night Baseball game of the week, as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox complete their World Series rematch series. LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu, who started the All-Star Game for the NL, takes the ball against LHP David Price and the home side. The Dodgers have won nine of Ryu's past 11 starts, and they're 5-1 in his past six starts against winning teams while going 14-3 in his past 17 on a Sunday. While they've been very successful with the lefty on the bump, they are just 3-15 in his past 18 on the road against winning teams, and 3-7 across his past 10 starts overall.

For the Red Sox, they're 0-4 in the past four at home vs. LHP. However, they're also 8-1 in the past nine interleague games vs. LHP, and 6-1 in the past seven interleague home outings against a southpaw. They have won 21 of Price's past 27 stats, too, and they're 19-7 in his past 26 against teams with a winning overall record. 13) Angels threw a combined no-hitter Friday night, in their first home game since Tyler Skaggs? tragic death. Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined on the no-hitter; Cole was the opener- he threw the first two innings. Pena threw 81 pitches in closing out the 13-0 win.

Skaggs? mother threw out the first pitch on a very sad, emotional night in Anaheim.

12) In his first two seasons in the NBA, Ben Simmons played 34 mpg in 160 games; he is one of the best passers I?ve ever seen, but this stat is staggering.

In those 160 games, Simmons is 0-17 behind the arc, and shoots only 58.3% on the foul line. For a guard with his overall skills to be such a suspect shooter is really unusual.

He could become one of the all-time greats if he would make jumpers and foul shots.

11) Orioles-Rays played a doubleheader Saturday; Baltimore started Aaron Brooks in the first game? they just got him from the A?s, where he started six games this season. Baltimore is a bad baseball team; they need all the help they can get.

Brooks retires the first eight batters he faced, throwing 32 pitches, but then they take him out, the night after they lost 16-4? WHY?!?!?!?! Brooks is 29, he?s not a big prospect, so they?re not trying to preserve his arm or anything. It makes zero sense.

Of course the next pitcher gives up a home run to the first batter he faces.

10) Orioles traded their best pitcher Andrew Cashner to Boston, for minor league IF Noelberth Romero and minor league OF Elio Prado. Both minor leaguers are 17 years old.

9) Washington QB Case Keenum is on his 4th team in four years this season; he started 39 games (21-18) the last three years, but he changes addresses every year. Will the Redskins play Keenum ahead of Colt McCoy, until rookie Dwayne Haskins is ready to play?

Keenum was the Rams? QB ahead of Jared Goff in 2016, so he knows that drill; he started the first nine games (4-5) but the first round draft pick will eventually start, just the way it is.

8) Lebron James will still wear #23 for the Lakers this coming season, due to production issues and the massive financial hit Nike would have absorbed from the No. 23 James inventory that?s already been produced.

Anthony Davis will wear #3 for the Lakers this season.

5) Grayson Allen got tossed out of a summer league game Thursday, after he got a flagrant foul, with Memphis down 24 in 4th quarter. Funny how the TV announcers didn?t cover for him this time, like they did when he was in college.

4) Likewise, it was suggested one TV during the week that Zion Williamson might want to get in better shape before the Pelicans begin their training camp. How does a kid with so much money on the line come to summer league in less than tip-top shape?

There was a controversy late at night (I mean, 4am in the east) where one player asked how much it was to call a bet and the dealer said the wrong amount, by like $5M. Zach Greinke, Arizona Diamondacks (10-3, 2.73 ERA, $667): There's the Greinke we've come to rely upon! After back-to-back rough games against the loaded lineups of the Dodgers and Rockies, Greinke has returned to his winning ways by not allowing a single run through 14 innings over his last two starts. A matter of fact, over his last six starts Greinke hasn't allowed a single run four times.

Today, Greinke and the Diamondbacks take on Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals in St. Louis. The line hasn't been set yet but with Wainwright rocking a 2.68 ERA in eight starts at home this season, the Under might be worth a look.

SLUMPING

Jordan Zimmerman, Detroit Tigers (0-6, 6.29 ERA $-480): The Royals are 17-28 at home and have Homer Bailey on the mound but are -152 favorites today. Is this real life? It is when they're going up against Jordan Zimmerman and the Tigers.

Zimmerman is coming off a shelling against the Red Sox where he allowed seven runs and 13 hits in 3 1-3 innings. He's still looking for his first win of the season and the Tigers have gone 0-8 over his previous eight starts.

After going 1-14 with Cincinnati last year, Bailey can surely feel his pain, but this year Bailey has a much better 7-6 record despite a 4.80 ERA. The O/U is installed at 10.


3 STRIKES

DEGROM DAY

Last year's version of "Bieber Fever" (seriously, I'm gonna make sure this becomes a thing) was "deGrom day" where the first five innings Under cashed in more than 80 percent of Jacob deGrom's starts. Books have caught on and started skewing the lines but it's still a bet worth mentioning with deGrom shining with a 3.27 ERA and facing a Miami Marlins squad today that ranks dead-last in the majors in scoring.

The O/U for the first five is set at 3.5 with Miami starting Sandy Alcantara and his 3.82 ERA. The Mets are -195 favorites but it's worth keeping in mind that the Mets are just 1-7 over deGrom's last eight starts.

HOSTING HIS OWN HOME RUN DERBY

Astros All-Star Justin Verlander might be one of the best pitchers in the majors and is currently 10-4 with a 0.81 WHIP and .168 BAA, but he's actually been struggling recently. Verlander has a 4.80 ERA over his last six starts and has given up a whopping 12 homers over his previous five starts. We made a bit of money by betting on Mike Trout and Shoehei Ohtani to homer off him during his last start (they both cashed) and the Rangers could do the same today.

Joey Gallo is +230 to hit a home run today while Shin-Soo Choo is +325. When you consider that Choo lights up righties with a slugging percentage of .570 and has clubbed three homers off Verlander in his career, he has some value at that price.

ANOTHER BLOWOUT IN THE WORKS?

The Athletics have outscored the White Sox 18-3 through the first two games of their series in Oakland. They could be poised for another big win tonight as they face Reynaldo Lopez and his 6.34 ERA. The A's will start Brett Anderson who is 9-5 with a 3.86 ERA. Taking the A's on the runline at -1.5 pays out at -120.

Another intriguing play in this game is the Over on the total of 10. Lopez is an absolute disaster on the mound, has a BAA of .314 on the road and the Over is 6-2 over his last eight starts. Anderson has a 4.54 ERA at home and the Over has hit in five of his last seven games. The Over has also cashed in 11 of the last 12 meetings in the head-to-head.

5) There were 422 points played in the Federer-Djokovic match at Wimbledon Sunday; 35 of them were aces. Lot of people on social media were suggesting it was one of the best matches ever played.

4) Fantasy baseball rant: It is really frustrating to have pitchers on teams that suck; none of my pitchers this year are on good teams. Miami, the Mets, Detroit, San Francisco, even San Diego is below .500 now. Good pitchers struggle to win with lousy defensive support.

Sandy Alcantara pitched pretty well for the Marlins Sunday, but their infield was AWFUL- Mets had five infield hits, mixed in with a couple errors and other mental miscues. They looked like they were out late in South Beach Saturday night. Alcantara deserved better.

3) ESPN hired former NFL QB Ryan Leaf as a college football analyst, as Leaf continues his comeback from personal problems that derailed his playing career.

Leaf was the #2 overall NFL draft pick for the San Diego Chargers in 1998 and worked for the Pac-12 Network last year- he has been co-hosting a show on SiriusXM?s Pac-12 channel.

He has has battled drug addiction and served time in prison, so good for him for seemingly overcoming those demons. Look forward to learning from him this fall.

2) Cincinnati Reds hit five triples in Saturday?s game, the first time the Reds did that since June of 1929. Coors Field is a lot more spacious than the Reds? home ballpark.

1) SEC football media days start today; oddly entertaining TV, with lot of interviews with people not really saying very much. It was much better when Les Miles was at LSU, though.

Still Not Detroit!

The Detroit Tigers head across Lake Erie to battle the Cleveland Indians, who were only able to salvage one of three games against the Minnesota Twins in a key American League Central Division battle over the weekend. LHP Daniel Norris takes the ball for manager Ron Gardenhire and the Tigers, while RHP Adam Plutko returns from a stint in the bullpen to start for manager Terry Francona.

The Tigers have managed to win just three of their past 16 games inside the American League Central, while cashing in just 13 of the past 53 games following a victory. They're also a dismal 12-40 over the past 52 games, while going 0-6 in their past six series openers. Norris might not be the guy to snap the skid, either, as the Tigers are just 3-9 over the past 12 starts by Norris, while going 6-22 in the past 28 games overall with Norris on the hill. They're also 1-6 in his past seven against winning teams.

Cleveland has still won seven of the past nine games overall, and they're 12-3 in the past 15 games inside the AL Central. In addition, they're 9-2 in the past 11 games against a left-handed starting pitcher, while going 8-3 in the past 11 series openers. They're also 4-0 in Plutko's past four starts, 4-1 in his past five starts at Progressive Field and 4-0 in the past four against teams with a losing overall record, too. In this series, it's been all Cleveland all the time lately. They're 51-18 in the past 69 meetings overall, and 24-7 in the past 31 home games for the Indians against the Tigers.

It's a southpaw battle in the Bronx as LHP Blake Snell of the Rays tangles with LHP James Paxton of the Yankees. Tampa Bay has no case of the Mondays, as they're 23-5 in the past 28 appearances on the day. More importantly, they're 5-1 in the past six overall, 5-1 in the past six inside the AL East and 4-1 in the past five on the road, too. They're also 15-6 in the past 21 on the road against a left-handed starting pitcher while going 5-2 in the past seven overall vs. LHP. Tampa Bay has won 19 of Snell's past 28 starts, while going 12-4 in his past 16 against winning sides.

The Yankees have won seven of their past nine games vs. LHP, while going 23-7 in their past 30 games against a winning team. They're also 38-14 in the past 52 series openers, while winning 49 of the past 68 divisional battles, or a winning percentage of 72.1 percent. With the Canadian southpaw Paxton on the bump, New York has won six of the past seven at home, and they're 4-1 in his past five series openers while going 8-2 in his past 10 starts on a grass surface. In this series, the Rays are 2-8 in Snell's past 10 road outings against the Yankees, 2-6 in the past eight meetings overall and 17-35 across the past 52 meetings in the Bronx.

Weather Report
There is only one trouble spot in terms of precipitation, as the Pirates and Cardinals see a 60 percent chance of rain from the remnants of Tropcial Storm Barry affect the St. Louis area. The rain is expected to pull out by 10 p.m. CT, however, so perhaps they get the game in. If and when they do get underway, they'll face 11-14 mph winds blowing in from right field.

Wind will be the issue for the Reds-Cubs battle at Wrigley field, gusting 11-14 mph to straightaway center field, so watch the over.

The Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles kick off their interleague rivalry at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and the O's turn to RHP Asher Wojchiechowski, recently acquired from the Cleveland Indians. The Nats have enjoyed their rest, going 4-0 in the past four after a day off. They're also 10-1 in the past 11 road outings against a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also 7-2 in the past nine road outings, while going 21-6 in the past 27 vs. RHP. The O's are the complete oppo, going 1-5 in the past six against NL East foes, 15-43 in the past 58 games overall and 14-39 in the past 53 at home. Washington has won seven of the past eight outings, while the under is 6-1 in the past seven overall in the series and 14-4 in the past 18 battles in Charm City.

The Mariners travel down to the Bay Area to kick off a new series against the Athletics. LHP Marco Gonzales takes the ball from manager Scott Servais, while the A's counter with RHP Daniel Mengden. The Mariners have managed to pick up victories in just nine of their past 37 road contests, while going 1-5 in the past six against RHP. They're also just 5-16 in the past 21 following a day off. The M's have won five of the past six starts by Gonzales, while going 6-0 in his past six series openers, however.

For the A's, they're 4-0 in the past four home games, 6-1 in the past seven series openers and 5-1 in the past six inside the division. Rest also does them well, as they're 9-2 in the past 11 following a scheduled day off. The A's have also won 20 of the past 27 games overall, while going 41-18 in the past 59 vs. LHP. The A's have won 21 of the past 29 starts by Mengden, including eight of the past 11 at home while going 6-1 in his past seven series openers.

Weather Report
The Nats and O's face a 30 percent chance of rain at first pitch, tapering off to 20 percent by 10 p.m. ET. So we may or may not see the tarpaulin, but chances are good the game is played as scheduled. The Mets and Twins will also see similar conditions, with 30 percent or greater chances of rain with plenty of humidity, making Minneapolis feel more like Atlanta.

In Texas, they could use a little rain to cool things off, as the temperature is forecast to be 103 degrees at first pitch. There will be a hot wind blowing in from 11-14 mph from right-center field to home plate. The Mariners and Athletics will also deal with a 10-13 mph wind blowing to straightaway center field, but with temperatures around 60 degrees, it will feel more like April or October in the Bay Area.
