Red Sox beat Royals 7-5, snap 8-game losing streak
August 5, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Rick Porcello pitched six innings of one-run ball, Sam Travis hit a two-run homer and the Boston Red Sox halted their eight-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory over the struggling Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Rafael Devers added a solo shot for the Red Sox. Travis' gave Boston a homer in a club-record 18 straight games in Fenway Park. The old mark was set in 1969.

Bubba Starling, Meibrys Viloria and Cheslor Cuthbert each went deep for Kansas City, with Viloria's his first homer in the majors and Starling's a three-run shot.

It was the seventh straight loss for the Royals, who had a 10-game skid in the season's first two weeks.

Porcello (10-8) gave up four hits, walked two and struck out five.

Brandon Workman got the final three outs for his sixth save.

YANKEES 9, ORIOLES 6

BALTIMORE (AP) -New York hit five more home runs at Camden Yards, including two by Mike Tauchman, to set a major league record and win its 13th straight game in Baltimore.

New York's power surge and sixth straight win overshadowed a memorable night for Baltimore's Jonathan Villar, who became the fifth Orioles player to hit for the cycle and first since Felix Pie on Aug. 14, 2009. Villar tripled in the third inning, doubled in the fifth, homered in the sixth and dumped a single into right field off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth.

Tauchman delivered a bases-empty drive in the sixth inning and a tiebreaking solo shot off Paul Fry (1-4) in the eighth, his first career multihomer game. Austin Romine, Brett Gardner and Mike Ford also connected for the Yankees.

New York has hit 32 home runs at Camden Yards, a single-season record for most by a visiting team in one ballpark. The mark was previously held by the Milwaukee Braves, who hit 29 at Cincinnati's Crosley Field in 1957.

The Yankees did it in only eight games, and they can add to the record on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Adam Ottavino (5-3) pitched the seventh inning for New York and Chapman worked the ninth for his 30th save.

BLUE JAYS 2, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Rookie Bo Bichette homered and scored both runs, Jacob Waguespack pitched six impressive innings and Toronto ended Tampa Bay's six-game winning streak.

Bichette opened the game with a double off Charlie Morton, the sixth straight game in which he has doubled. He hit his third home run leading off the third.

Waguespack (3-1) gave up four hits and a walk, striking out six in his fifth major league start. Derek Law got four outs for his second save in four days.

Morton (12-4) pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out nine.

The Rays put nine runners on base in the first seven innings, including three via Toronto errors. They were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and were shut out for the first time since June 28.

Freddy Galvis and Randal Grichuk also had two hits for the Blue Jays, who have won six of eight.

RANGERS 1, INDIANS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - All-Star Mike Minor struck out seven over seven innings, Nomar Mazara drove in Elvis Andrus with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Texas beat Cleveland.

Minor (10-6) allowed seven hits and walked one as Texas won its fifth straight.

Andrus started the fourth with a triple, coming home a batter later when Mazara flew out to short center. He easily beat the bouncing throw home from rookie Oscar Mercado.

Jesse Chavez worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Jose Leclerc pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Indians starter Aaron Civale (1-1) allowed a run in six innings and struck out seven in his second big league appearance.

NEW YORK (AP) - J.D. Davis, Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso homered in a seventh-inning rally, lifting New York over Miami for a doubleheader sweep that moved them above .500 for the first time since early May.

New York won the opener 6-2 as Jeff McNeil welcomed Robert Dugger to the major leagues with a home run on his first pitch, Amed Rosario broke a 1-1 tie with a third-inning homer and Jacob deGrom gave himself a three-run cushion with a two-run single.

New York (57-56) had not been above .500 since it was 16-15 before play on May 3.

In the opener, Miami's Isan Diaz had a memorable home run, connecting off deGrom in the sixth inning of his big league debut for his first hit.

DeGrom (7-7) struck out eight in seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits. Other than the home run, he retired 15 of his last 16 batters.

Dugger gave up six runs, five hits and four walks in five innings, striking out three, hitting two batters and throwing a wild pitch. He became the first starting pitcher to give up a home run on the first pitch of his debut since New York Yankees rookie Derek Jeter - the Marlins current CEO - went deep off the California Angels' Jason Dickson on Aug 21, 1996, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

REDS 7, ANGELS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Luis Castillo struck out a career-high 13 and Cincinnati scored five runs in the first innings on the way to a win over Los Angeles.

Castillo (11-4) threw a career-high 119 pitches in seven innings while getting his career-best 11th win. He allowed three hits and one walk before finishing with a flourish, striking out the side in the seventh.

Raisel Iglesias picked up his 22nd save.

Mike Trout and Luis Rengifo hit solo home runs for the Angels, who have dropped nine of 11 since a four-game winning streak.

Brian Goodwin added his first career pinch-hit home run, a two-run shot to right against David Hernandez, in the ninth.

BREWERS 9, PIRATES 7

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Christian Yelich hit two home runs and took over the major league lead with 39, powering Milwaukee past Pittsburgh.

Yelich homered in the first inning for the second straight game. The first of his four hits came on a sinker by Dario Agrazal (2-3), and he sent it 408 feet into the bleachers in left. In the ninth inning, Yelich crushed a slider from Geoff Hartlieb 425 feet onto the river walk beyond right field to make the score 9-6.

Brewers starter Jordan Lyles (7-7) limited his former team to three runs (one earned) on two hits in five innings in his first start against the Pirates since being traded on July 29.

Mike Moustakas hit his 27th homer of the season as the Brewers snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Pirates are last in the NL Central after falling to 4-19 since the All-Star break.

Josh Hader got the final four outs for his 25th save.

WHITE SOX 7, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - All-Star Lucas Giolito ended a five-start winless streak, Tim Anderson had three hits and scored twice, and Chicago beat Detroit.

All nine starters for the White Sox had at least one hit and seven either scored or drove in a run. Chicago has won three of four after a 2-8 homestand.

JaCoby Jones homered and tripled for Detroit, which has lost 10 of 12 and gone 10-34 since June 1.

Giolito (12-5) gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out eight.

Tigers starter Spencer Turnbull allowed two runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter in three innings. He struck out seven.

Gregory Soto (0-5) took the loss.

TWINS 5, BRAVES 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Sano's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the ninth inning gave Minnesota a victory over Atlanta.

Sano's 19th home run of the season went an estimated 443 feet off reliever Chris Martin, hitting high off the wall in center field.

Martin (0-3) was making his second appearance for Atlanta since being acquired at the trade deadline.

Trevor May (5-3) pitched two innings with one hit allowed for the Twins, who have won four in a row to stretch their lead over Cleveland in the AL Central to four games. They've won nine of 11.

Freddie Freeman hit his 27th homer for Atlanta, which has lost three of four and is 12-11 since the All-Star break

Minnesota's Max Kepler hit his 31st homer.

CUBS 6, ATHLETICS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Javier Baez hit two of Chicago's four homers and the Cubs' bullpen barely held on without Craig Kimbrel in beating Oakland.

Ian Happ and Nicholas Castellanos also connected as Chicago improved to 40-18 at home with its fourth straight win.

The Cubs are counting on their depth to help them stay on top of the NL Central until Kimbrel and Willson Contreras return from injuries. Kimbrel was placed on the 10-day injured list before the game with right knee inflammation, and Contreras is expected to miss four weeks after an MRI showed a Grade 2 hamstring strain.

Oakland had won six of seven and nearly pulled off an impressive rally in its first game at Wrigley Field since 2010. Marcus Semien went deep twice for the A's, and Nick Martini connected for his second career homer in a successful homecoming for suburban Chicago native.

Rowan Wick (2-0) got two outs for the win.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

? Twins 5, Braves 3? Miguel Sano hit a walk-off tater.

? New York 9, Baltimore 6? Orioles? SS Villar hit for the cycle.

? Mets 6-5, Marlins 2-4? Mets won 11 of their last 12 games.

? Nationals 4, Giants 0? Erick Fedde tossed six shutout innings.

? Nationals signed veteran IF Asdrubel Cabrera; Braves signed 1B Lucas Duda.

? Colts claimed RB D?Onta Foreman off waivers after Houston dumped him.

Quote of the Day
?It?s early and I was forced to make it. I wouldn?t have made a depth chart right now. There?s no reason to, it?s silly. But that?s for the media and for me to come up and answer these questions.

But really, that?s all it is. Words on a piece of paper, names on a piece of paper and an order that means nothing at this point.?
Redskins? coach Jay Gruden

Tuesday?s quiz
Who holds the Dodgers? record for most home runs in a season?

Monday?s quiz
Joe Dimaggio had a 56-game hitting streak in 1941, the longest ever; since 1900, Pete Rose has the 2nd-longest hitting streak (45 in 1978)

Sunday?s quiz
John Farrell was manager of the Red Sox before Alex Cora.

*******************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??..

13) Houston Astros were -$419 favorites over Seattle Sunday, making them the 4th-highest priced favorite in any baseball game since 2005:
-$485 Dodgers vs Atlanta, 2016 (W4-0)
-$435 Twins vs Washington, 2007 (L1-3)
-$434 Indians vs Detroit, 2017 (W2-0)
-$419 Astros vs Seattle, 2019 (W3-1)

12) Aaron Sanchez was 0-13, 7.71 in his last 17 starts for Toronto, so of course he goes to the Astros and throws six no-hit innings in his first start for Houston.

11) At SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas, you can bet on the over/under of combined losses for Clemson/Alabama?s football teams this season:

1.5 losses, over -$130, under +$110

10) Trevor Story is third player ever to homer five games in a row against the Giants, the other two being Rogers Hornsby (1922) and Mike Schmidt (1979).

9) Detroit Tigers lost P Matthew Boyd?s last five starts, last three in extra innings.

8) Big Ten Network posted a picture on Twitter Monday of football practice at Indiana, where the kid holding for kicks holds the ball in place with his nose instead of his finger, and then the left-footed kicker kicks the ball.

This is a very bad idea, though it did show that the holder has a lot of faith in the kicker.

Kids, do NOT try this at home.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Cubs put C Willson Contreras (hamstring) on the IL.
? Angels put SS Andrelton Simmons, P?s Felix Pena, Griffin Canning on the IL.
? Phillies optioned 3B Mikael Franco to AAA.
? Washington put Howie Kendrick, Roenis Elias on the IL.
? Bronx put OF Aaron Hicks (flexor strain) on the IL.
? Reds claimed P Kevin Gausman off waivers from Atlanta.

6) Not sure what criteria baseball teams use to promote their minor league prospects; Braves promoted their three best guys at AA Mississippi to AAA Gwinnett this week, but one of them, Drew Waters, was mired in a 2-for-35 slump when he was promoted.

Makes you wonder if there was a problem with the coaching staff at Mississippi.

5) Tom Brady signed a 2-year contract extension that pays him $23M a year, and makes him the 6th-highest paid QB in the NFL (he had been #20).

As competitive as Brady is, it is hard to fathom that he isn?t somehow getting extra under the table to circumvent the salary cap. Brady has won six Super Bowls; you think he?d be OK with being the 20th highest-paid QB in the NFL?

4) College basketball transfer portal:
? Stetson transfer Abayomi Iyiola bolts to Arkansas.

3) Golfer JT Poston won the Wyndham PGA event this weekend; he is the first golfer since Lee Trevino in 1974 to play a 72-hole PGA event without any bogeys.

2) RIP to longtime NFL writer Don Banks, 56, who passed away in Ohio Saturday; I met him when the Giants used to have training camp here in Albany. We met at a dinner- he was a nationally known writer and I was just there because my friend is a writer, but Don was as nice as he could be to me- we talked about football throughout dinner.

He had recently been hired by the Las Vegas newspaper to cover the NFL. Very sad. RIP, sir.

1) Euroleague basketball import D.J. Cooper, a 6-0 guard, was suspended by FIBA for fraud after a drug test declared him to be pregnant; turns out he had submitted his girlfriend?s urine, and she was probably unaware that she was pregnant. Oy.

Cooper has been playing pro ball overseas since he graduated from Ohio U in 2013. Not sure what he majored in, but I?m guessing it wasn?t Biology.

LEADING OFF: Greinke debuts for Houston, Foltynewicz returns
August 5, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

ZEROED IN

Zack Greinke makes his Houston debut, joining an Astros rotation that is on quite a roll. Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, newcomer Aaron Sanchez and the starters for the AL West leaders are 14-1 in their last 17 games - the Astros held Seattle to a total of seven hits in a three-game sweep over the weekend, including a combined no-hitter.

Greinke (10-4, 2.90 ERA) was acquired from Arizona on Wednesday. He'll see a lot of familiar faces when he starts against Colorado at Minute Maid Park.

Trevor Story has hit five home runs off Greinke, tied with Carlos Gonzalez and Jason Giambi for the most against the right-hander. Rockies star Nolan Arenado, however, hasn't homered in 75 at-bats vs. Greinke.

HE'S BACK

Mike Foltynewicz returns to the Atlanta rotation after getting demoted to the minors. He'll start against the AL Central-leading Twins at Target Field.

A 13-game winner and an All-Star for the Braves in 2018, he struggled to regain that form after battling elbow trouble in spring training. He was sent to Triple-A on June 22 after going 2-5 with a 6.37 ERA in 11 starts.

The Braves have struggled to fill the last spot in their rotation behind Dallas Keuchel, Mike Soroka, Max Fried and Julio Teheran. Foltynewicz is one of six other pitchers who have started for Atlanta, a group that's gone a combined 6-16 with a 6.73 ERA.

Foltynewicz will take the place of Kevin Gausman, who was claimed on waivers by Cincinnati. Gausman was 3-7 with a 6.19 ERA.

SPURRED ON

Jake Arrieta (8-8, 4.44 ERA) starts for the Phillies, seeing how the bone spurs in his right elbow are feeling. He was forced to leave his previous outing in the fifth inning because of the nagging problems. Arrieta has thrown a total of 19 2/3 innings in his last four starts.

Arrieta pitches at Arizona in a matchup of NL wild-card contenders. Mike Leake (9-8, 4.27) makes his first start since the Diamondbacks got him last week in a trade with Seattle.

NOW WARMING

The Cubs plan to take a closer-by-committee approach after putting Craig Kimbrel on the 10-day injured list because of inflammation in his right knee.

Kimbrel is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA and nine saves in 14 games. He got a late start this year after he finalized a $43 million, three-year deal with Chicago in June.

Manager Joe Maddon mentioned Steve Cishek, who has 132 career saves, Brandon Kintzler, rookie Rowan Wick and Kyle Ryan as possibilities to finish games. Pedro Strop also is progressing after going on the IL with neck tightness.

The NL Central leaders also will be without All-Star catcher Willson Contreras for four weeks because of a strained right hamstring. He is batting .275 with 19 homers and 57 RBIs in 87 games.

The Cubs are hosting Oakland this week.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Chase Anderson, Milwaukee Brewers (5-2, 3.73 ERA, $-292):
It seems starting pitching will always be the Brewers biggest weakness, but Anderson is doing his best to prove otherwise right now. The right-hander has pitched to a 2.01 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP, while limiting opponents to a .182 batting average over his last four starts. He and the Brewers are moderate -150 road favorites for tonight?s matchup with the Pirates.

SLUMPING

Andrew Cashner, Boston Red Sox (10-6, 4.44 ERA, $1,196):
Cashner may be the leading MLB money starter right now, but that may not be true much longer the way things have gone for him in Boston thus far.

Cashner has been roughed up for a 6.94 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP, while opponents are getting on base at a .410 clip in his first four starts since joining the Red Sox. So, he?s like any other Red Sox starter we guess. But it doesn?t matter, the BoSox are still -170 home faves for tonight?s matchup against the Royals.

3 STRIKES

AIN?T HIS FIRST RODEO

Zack Greinke makes his debut for the Houston Astros tonight, and will also be dawning the cap of an American League team for the first time since he was an Angel back in 2012. Greinke was the prize acquisition of the trade deadline. The cerebral right-hander is having another fantastic season, owning a 2.90 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. But, his first opponent in an Astros uniform will be a familiar one. Grienke will face his former division rivals, the Colorado Rockies. In fact, this will be his fifth start against them this season. In those starts he has a 3.12 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP, with the most recent start coming a month ago, where he limited the Rockies to four hits over seven innings, while striking out nine.

NOT YOUR DAD?S METS

Most people (including us) were puzzled by the Mets trading for Marcus Stroman and holding on to Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler. But hey, what do we know, the Mets now have the MLB?S best rotation and have won 11 of their last 12 ball games. However, the big difference now is that the pitching is finally getting some support from the hitting. Over this 12-game stretch, the Mets are averaging 5.75 runs per game. They?ll try to keep rolling as they continue their series with the Marlins at Citi Field tonight. The aforementioned Wheeler gets the balls tonight and is coming off of seven innings of four-hit shutout ball his last time out against the White Sox. It?s no surprise the Mets are big -260 faves.

With a hot German Marques going for the Rockies (1.80 ERA, 0.60 WHIP in his last three starts) the Under 8 is worth a good look.

OVER THIS MATCHUP

Most trends that really catch your eye usually start around 10 games or so and you?re happy if they last another week or so. But not this one. Get this, the Yankees and Orioles have played to the Over 40 times in the last 51 meetings, with 10 Unders and one Push. This has a lot to do with the Yankees unreal lineup and the Orioles historic awfulness, but we digress. Tonight?s matchup features Jonathan Holder (5-2, 6.28 ERA) of the Yankees going up against Asher Wojciechowski (2-4, 4.15 ERA) of the Orioles. Wojciechowski has never faced the Yankees. Some may consider that a good thing, but we tend to think of it more as fresh meat. The total tonight is set at 11.

Surging Mets beat Marlins 5-0 for 12th win in 13 games
August 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Zack Greinke labored through six innings but wound up with a win in his Astros debut as Houston hit four home runs Tuesday night to beat the Colorado Rockies 11-6.

Playing in front of a season-high crowd of 43,243, the AL West leaders won their fifth straight. Yuli Gurriel hit two homers, Yordan Alvarez added a two-run drive and Carlos Correa homered and drove in three runs.

Greinke (11-4), a six-time All-Star who was traded from Arizona on Wednesday, yielded seven hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts. He left with the game tied at 5, tagged by Raimel Tapia's three-run homer in the sixth.

But Houston scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Correa's home run, to give Greinke his first win since July 5.

Charlie Blackmon hit a solo shot off Astros reliever Chris Devenski in the seventh to cut it to 1. But Houston tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the frame.

Colorado starter German Marquez gave up eight hits and five runs in five innings. Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-4) allowed one hit and two runs without getting an out in the sixth for the loss.

YANKEES 9, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - New York continued its home run binge against Baltimore, hitting six more and getting three RBIs from Austin Romine in its 14th consecutive win at Camden Yards.

One night after going deep five times, the Yankees went one better against the Orioles' beleaguered pitching staff. Mike Tauchman and DJ LeMahieu went back-to-back in the third inning and Brett Gardner and Cameron Maybin did the same in the ninth. Didi Gregorius also connected, and Romine contributed a solo shot and a two-run double.

The Yankees have hit 38 home runs at Camden Yards, extending their major league single-season record for most by a visiting team in one ballpark.

Asher Wojciechowski (2-5) took the loss.

Nestor Cortes Jr. (5-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings and Adam Ottavino got the final six outs for his first save.

METS 5, MARLINS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Zack Wheeler pitched eight efficient innings, Wilson Ramos and Pete Alonso homered, and New York won for the 12th time in 13 games.

Wheeler (9-6) cruised through eight innings on 99 pitches against the Marlins, allowing eight hits and striking out five.

Todd Frazier had an RBI double in the first inning and Ramos added a three-run shot in the third. Alonso smoked a solo shot in the fifth, his second connection in two games after going nine without one. Alonso has 36 homers for the season.

Miami right-hander Hector Noesi (0-1) allowed five runs over five innings in his first major league appearance since 2015.

New York will try to complete a four-game sweep of the Marlins on Wednesday.

WHITE SOX 5, TIGERS 3, 1ST GAME

TIGERS 10, WHITE SOX 6, 2ND GAME

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera had three hits and scored twice to help Detroit win the second game and split a doubleheader with Chicago.

Drew VerHagen (2-2) allowed one run in five innings for Detroit in the nightcap, then left the game after a 61-minute rain delay. Hector Santiago (1-1) yielded four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Detroit scored two runs in the second, then Cabrera led off the bottom of the third with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dawel Lugo to put the Tigers up 3-0. Cabrera led off the Detroit fifth with a single and eventually came home on a single by Travis Demeritte. Gordon Beckham added an RBI single to make it 5-1, and the rain delay began before the fifth inning ended.

Jordy Mercer hit a two-run homer for Detroit in the seventh.

In the first game, Jose Abreu homered and drove in three runs and Dylan Cease pitched five solid innings to lift Chicago.

Welington Castillo also homered for Chicago, and Jake Rogers went deep for Detroit.

Cease (2-4) allowed two runs and seven hits, striking out six with one walk. It was his second career victory, and both have come against the Tigers, who are 10-45 since the start of June.

Three relievers finished for the White Sox. Alex Colome allowed a run in the ninth but held on for his 22nd save in 23 chances.

Daniel Norris (3-9) allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

ROYALS 6, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) - Jorge Soler hit a pair of long two-run homers over the Green Monster, Jakob Junis pitched six effective innings and Kansas City snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Ryan O'Hearn also homered for Kansas City, which had lost eight in a row to the Red Sox - its longest slump ever against Boston.

Christian Vazquez had two hits with an RBI double for Boston, which halted its eight-game losing skid a night earlier.

The Red Sox also were held without a home run, ending a club-record stretch of at least one homer in 18 straight games in Fenway Park.

Junis (7-10) escaped a couple of early jams and gave up one run on seven hits, striking out four with one walk.

Andrew Cashner (10-7) gave up six runs on seven hits - three of them homers - over 5 1/3 innings, dropping his record to 1-4 since being traded from Baltimore to the Red Sox.

BREWERS 4, PIRATES 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Yasmani Grandal had two doubles and an RBI and Milwaukee, without a resting Christian Yelich, beat Pittsburgh for its second straight win.

Grandal drove in Ryan Braun with a double to left-center, the first hit off Pirates starter Steven Brault, in the fifth inning, before scoring when Trent Grisham grounded into a double play as the Brewers moved out to a 2-0 lead.

Bryan Reynolds homered and Francisco Liriano (4-3) took the loss, for Pittsburgh, which is 4-20 since the All-Star break.

Junior Guerra (4-3) picked up the win and Matt Albers earned his second save.

The day off was intended to manage a nagging back injury Yelich has been dealing with this season, manager Craig Counsell said.

ATHLETICS 11, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Lefty Jon Lester was tagged for a career high-tying 11 runs in only four innings, with Dustin Garneau and Stephen Piscotty hitting three-run homers that led Oakland.

Garneau's drive to the back row of the bleachers in left field was the big blow in an eight-run, second-inning burst. The A's went on to their seventh win in nine games.

Kris Bryant homered as the NL Central-leading Cubs had their four-game winning streak end.

Lester (9-8) allowed 11 runs - 10 of them earned - on 10 hits and three walks. Cubs catcher Taylor Davis pitched a scoreless ninth.

Brett Anderson (10-7) cruised to his first win in month, scattering seven hits over six innings. He also contributed two singles at the plate. Matt Olson had two RBIs and Mark Canha and Chad Pinder each drove in a run for the A's.

RAYS 7, BLUE JAYS 6, 10 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Kiermaier scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning as Tampa Bay rallied from six runs back.

Kiermaier led off the 10th by stretching a hit into a double off Buddy Bosher (0-2), and scored the game-ending run after a walk and Willy Adames' bunt. First baseman Brandon Drury fielded the bunt and threw to third in an unsuccessful attempt to force Kiermaier. After two strikeouts, Bosher's pitch to Austin Meadows bounced through catcher Danny Jansen and Kiermaier scored.

Diego Castillo (2-6) got the win after one inning of relief.

Avisail Garcia, Willy Adames and Meadows hit two-run homers for the Rays.

REDS 8, ANGELS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Tucker Barnhart hit two of Cincinnati's five home runs, Aristides Aquino included one among his three hits and came up with a clutch catch, helping complete a two-game sweep of Los Angeles.

Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer and Eugenio Suarez added a solo shot, helping Cincinnati overcome home runs by Justin Upton and Mike Trout and send the Angels to their sixth consecutive loss, matching their season-worst losing streak.

Barnhart hit solo shots into the right field seats in the sixth and eighth innings for his first career multi-homer game.

Anthony DeSclafani (7-6) allowed five hits and four runs with three walks and five strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings to collect the win, the Reds' third straight and fourth in five games.

Jose Suarez (2-3) set season highs by giving up six runs and 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings.

BRAVES 12, TWINS 7

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. and Freddie Freeman hit first-pitch homers off Minnesota ace Jose Berrios and Atlanta routed the Twins.

The first three batters in Atlanta's lineup - Acuna, Ozzie Albies and Freeman - combined to go 10 for 16 with nine runs and eight RBIs. Acuna scored four runs and Freeman drove in four.

It was one of the worst starts of Berrios' career. He allowed a career-high nine runs in the loss and slipped to 10-6.

Braves righty Mike Foltynewicz (3-5) allowed just two hits through five innings but was tagged for three runs, including two homers, in the sixth.

Minnesota's Nelson Cruz hit his 31st and 32nd home runs of the season, homering in the sixth and seventh innings. He has six multi-homer games this year, tying Harmon Killebrew in Twins' history for the most in a season.

Quote of the Day
?There?s a huge, gigantic learning curve. You got to get in all the different things: contracts, free agency, the salary cap.?
Butch Davis, who jumped from Miami Hurricanes to the Browns in 2001, talking about moving up from college football to the NFL

Wednesday?s quiz

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Triple-A baseball games used to use Rawlings? standard minor league baseball, which is made in a factory in China and is less expensive. Now they use the major league baseball.

The major league baseball is handmade in Costa Rica, and it has long been considered to be a more lively baseball. The MLB baseball has a tighter construction and lower seams in general (they are handmade) than the standard minor league baseball.

In Double-A, the average hitter is hitting .241/.319/.371 this year. Guys are getting called up to AAA and routinely putting up better numbers than they did in AA. Go figure.

12) AAA pitchers are frustrated but they don?t say anything because they?re minor league pitchers and they don?t want to hurt their chances of being promoted.

There is a reason, though, why the Padres have had several of their pitching prospects skip over AAA El Paso and go from AA to the majors; El Paso being at a higher altitude, plus the juiced baseballs, add up to pitchers getting their ERA?s inflated, their confidence deflated.

11) When college basketball teams take summer trips overseas (they?re allowed one every four years) it can result in an excellent season the following winter, since teams practice more, play more and bond better as a team.

(Unless you?re USC and your point guard tears his ACL on a trip, which happened a few years ago)

West Virginia is in Spain this week, Minnesota is in Italy; next time you hear people whining about how bad college athletes have it, ask them how many free trips to Italy they?ve gotten?

10) Top five grad transfer basketball players, according to CBSSports.com:
? Kerry Blackshear, going from Virginia Tech to Florida
? Chris Clarke, going from Virginia Tech to Texas Tech
? Lamar Kimble, going from St Joe?s to Louisville
? Nate Sestina, going from Bucknell to Kentucky
? Admon Gilder, going from Texas A&M to Gonzaga

9) NCAA put in new requirements for people to become agents, and it is causing controversy. Here are the requirements:

To become an NCAA-certified agent one must:

Have a bachelor?s degree;
Have been NBPA certified for at least three consecutive years and be in good-standing.
Maintain professional liability insurance.
Submit application by appropriate deadline.
The controversy is with the college degree thing; Rich Paul is one of the most powerful agents in the NBA- he is also one of Lebron James? oldest friends and he doesn?t have a college degree.

8) Pro Football Talk posted that there are reports from Oakland Raider land saying Antonio Brown burned the bottom of his feet by entering a cryotherapy machine without the proper footwear, and his feet were frostbitten.

Oy.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Dodgers put OF Alex Verdugo (oblique) on the IL.
? Giants DFA?d 2B Joe Panik.

6) Mariners? SS Tim Beckham was suspended 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

5) White Sox reliever Aaron Bummer has appeared in 38 games; he held the first batter he?s faced in each game to 0-33 with five walks.

Because he is a lefty, some might think it will be a bummer when they change the rules and he has to face 3+ batters in an appearance, but lefties are batting .175 against him this year, righties .180, so he?s been tough against everyone.

4) Bookmaking legend Jimmy Vaccaro posted on Twitter Tuesday that when he drove to work at SouthPoint, it was 104 degrees out, but around 50 people were waiting in line for a picture by the famous ?Welcome to Las Vegas? sign at the south end of the Strip.

3) When Joey Lucchesi starts on mound for San Diego, Padres are 12-6-3 in first five innings, but they?re only 9-12 overall in his starts. Lucchesi doesn?t usually get past the sixth inning; their setup guys aren?t very good.

2) Rays 7, Blue Jays 6 (10)? Tampa Bay trailed 6-0 in fourth inning.

1) A high school football team from Anaheim lost all of their equipment recently in a storage fire; the LA Chargers stepped in and donated $10,000 to help the team get back on their feet.

This is what we need more of; people helping other people out.

LEADING OFF: Mets rolling, Yelich resting, Torres exits
August 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

METS ON THE MOVE

The Mets go for their 13th win in 14 tries and a four-game sweep when lefty Steven Matz (6-7, 4.60) faces Miami's Jordan Yamamoto (4-2, 3.94) at Citi Field. The hard-charging Mets are 58-56, a sharp turnaround since losing their first game after the All-Star break and falling 11 games under .500.

Mets rookie Pete Alonso has homered in two straight games and ranks among the major league leaders with 36.

BANGED-UP BREWERS

Major league home run leader Christian Yelich could be back in the Milwaukee lineup after sitting out a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh.

Manager Craig Counsell gave Yelich a day off to help deal with a nagging back injury. The NL MVP has 39 homers, and is batting .336 with 84 RBIs.

Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain exited the game at Miller Park with a bruised left knee, shortly after fouling a ball off himself.

CHECK HIM

The Yankees will see how All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres is feeling, a day after he exited a game at Baltimore in the third inning with what the team described as ''core pain.''

Torres left Sunday night's game against Boston with a core muscle injury but was back in the lineup against the Orioles on Monday as the designated hitter, going 0 for 5 with two strikeouts.

He started at second base on Tuesday night, going hitless in two at-bats before leaving.

AVAILABLE

The Giants have cut second baseman Joe Panik, no longer needing him to play regularly after getting Scooter Gennett at the trade deadline.

The 28-year-old Panik, a first-round draft pick by the Giants in 2011 and key contributor on San Francisco's 2014 World Series champion team, was batting .235 with three homers and 27 RBIs in 103 games this season.

Panik was designated for assignment on Tuesday.
