LEADING OFF: Nats-Mets open series, Price down for Red Sox
August 8, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

UNEXPECTED IN THE EAST

The Nationals and Mets begin a three-game series in Queens with surprising significance considering both teams have been more than 10 games below .500 this season. Washington now leads the NL wild-card race, and New York is only 2 1/2 games behind. The Mets have won 13 of 14 after stunningly deciding to be buyers at the trade deadline, and former Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman (6-11, 3.07) will make his second start since being acquired last month. Right-hander Stephen Strasburg (14-5, 3.72) is up for the Nats, who recently swept a three-game set at San Francisco.

BIG SWINGS UP NORTH

The Yankees and Blue Jays are set to slug it out again a night after making history in Toronto. New York hit three home runs - two from Gio Urshela - to set a big league record with 19 homers over four games. Meanwhile, Blue Jays rookie Bo Bichette became the first player ever to double in nine straight games, and he also homered to give him an unprecedented 13 extra-base hits in the first 11 games of his career. Bichette is the first rookie to have an extra-base hit in nine straight games since Ted Williams in 1939, according to STATS. Former Toronto lefty J.A. Happ (9-6, 5.24) is scheduled to start for the Yankees against righty Sean Reid-Foley (1-2, 2.49). AL East-leading New York has won nine straight.

DH DOWN

Minnesota is hoping for good news on leading home run hitter Nelson Cruz after he strained his left wrist whiffing on a pitch by Cleveland's Mike Clevinger on Thursday night. The Twins dropped the opener of the pivotal four-game series, cutting their AL Central lead to one, and now might be without Cruz. The 39-year-old slugger was set to be evaluated, and the team expected to announce more Friday.

PRICE DOWN

The Red Sox will try to remain relevant to the AL playoff picture without left-hander David Price, who was placed on the 10-day IL on Thursday after an MRI revealed a cyst on his left wrist. The team announced the 33-year-old Price was treated with a shot of cortisone in the wrist. Price is 7-5 record with a 4.36 ERA over 21 starts this season. Cora noted that the cyst, classified as a TFCC cyst, was not cancerous or related to any other serious illness.

NET POSITIVE

The Astros will extend the protective netting at Minute Maid Park to cover more of the seating area, joining other teams that have taken safety measures after foul balls injured fans. The team announced Thursday the extended netting would be installed before the homestand starting Aug. 19. It will run farther down the left field and right field lines to better protect fans from foul balls and bats that fly out of hitters' hands. A 2-year-old girl suffered a skull fracture when she struck by a foul ball during a May game in Houston. Last month, the Chicago White Sox became the first major league team to extend protective netting from foul pole to foul pole.

BAUER POWER

Right-hander Trevor Bauer is slated to make his first appearance in front of his new home fans as Cincinnati continues a series against the Cubs. Bauer was acquired from Cleveland ahead of the trade deadline and labored at Atlanta in his first start with the Reds, a 5-4 loss. Bauer hasn't faced the Cubs since May 22, 2018, when he pitched six scoreless innings in a 10-1 victory.

Friday?s 6-pack

College football spreads for Labor Day weekend:

? UCLA @ Cincinnati (-3)

? Utah (-5.5) @ BYU

? Colorado State vs Colorado (-11)

? Purdue (-9) @ Nevada

? Ole Miss @ Memphis (-6.5)

? South Carolina (-7) @ North Carolina

Quote of the Day
?There are times where my bedside manner hasn?t been the best. People will tell you that millennials want honesty. Sometimes I?ve been a little too abrupt and to the point. And I think it?s because I?ve never been a pussyfooter. I?ve never dallied around. ? Maybe there has to be a softer, kinder Dave Gettleman. Yeah, I?m 68, but I?m not an old man falling down. I?d like to think that I can learn, that I?m agile and can still learn.?
New Jersey Giants? GM Dave Gettleman

Friday?s quiz
Arizona Cardinals? coach Kliff Kingsbury played in one NFL game, back in 2005; who did he play for?

Thursday?s quiz
The Liberty Bowl is played in Memphis every year.

Wednesday?s quiz
Bill Belichick went 37-45 in five years as coach of the Cleveland Browns, before they moved to Baltimore after the 1995 season and became the Ravens. He hadn?t met Tom Brady yet.

****************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) So you want to be a major league GM? It ain?t easy.

This year, Baltimore is a terrible team, but they were 11-6 when Andrew Cashner started for them; he was 9-3, 3.73 with a 1.19 WHIP. Pretty good.

So on July 13, the Red Sox acquired Cashner for two minor leaguers, hoping he would be the #5 starter that would help propel them into the playoffs.

Not so fast. In five starts for Boston, Cashner is 1-4, 7.53, with a 1.74 WHIP.

Oy.

12) Been a weird baseball season; who had Eduardo Escobar leading the major leagues in RBI (93) on August 8th?

11) Remember the movie Field of Dreams, where Kevin Costner?s character built a baseball diamond on a cornfield in Iowa?

Next summer, Bronx-White Sox will play a real game in a temporary 8,000-seat ballpark that MLB will build on that Dyersville, Iowa farm. ESPN will televise the game.

10) Alex Tanney is fighting to be the Giants? 3rd-string QB; he is 31 years old, has been in/out of nine different NFL organizations. Tanney has played in one NFL game, completing 10-14 passes for 99 yards in a 30-24 loss at Indianapolis at the end of the 2015 season.

If the Giants cut him, chances are someone else will sign him- competent QB?s are hard to find. Sounds like he is laying the foundation to be an NFL coach. Bet he could write a hell of a book.

9) Bills 24, Colts 16? RB Senorise Perry is the first Buffalo Bill to wear #32 since OJ Simpson left the Bills after the 1977 season.

8) Ravens backup kicker Kaare Vedvik made FG?s from 55, 45 yards in the first half Thursday, which is bad news for kickers around the NFL who are struggling in training camp.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Cubs added C Jonathan Lucroy to their roster.
? Red Sox put P David Price (wrist) on the IL.
? Braves put 3B Austin Riley (knee) on the IL. He got hurt in the weight room.

6) Cleveland Browns traded RB Duke Johnson to Houston for a conditional 4th-round pick.

5) IPFW (Fort Wayne) announced Tuesday that it is leaving the Summit League for the Horizon League, beginning in the 2020-2021 basketball season.

4) Arizona sophomore G Brandon Williams will miss the entire upcoming basketball season after undergoing knee surgery.

3) Went to Saratoga racetrack the other day; saw a guy wearing one of the Jets? new jerseys- very bright green. Look a lot like the CFL?s Saskatchewan Roughriders? jerseys.

2) Rookie QB?s Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones both looked sharp in their first NFL action; not so much for Washington?s Dwayne Haskins, who threw two INT?s in his first preseason action.

1) Air Force Captain Roy Knight Jr was shot down over Laos in 1967 during the Vietnam War; he didn?t survive. It took until this past June to find his remains.

Thursday, travelers at Dallas airport stopped in silence to show respect as the war hero?s remains were brought back to this country.

When Captain Knight left from the Dallas airport to go overseas in 1967, his 5-year-old son came to the airport and waved goodbye. It was the last time he would ever see his father alive.

The Southwest Airlines pilot who brought Captain Knight back to Dallas Thursday was his son.

Friday's Diamond Notes
Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Astros (16-3 last 19)

Houston put together its most complete homestand of the season by going 5-0 against Seattle and Colorado, while scoring at least nine runs in four of those victories. The Astros finished off a four-game season sweep of the Rockies by beating Colorado, 11-6 and 14-3 this week to improve to 15-2 in their last 17 games at Minute Maid Park. Houston owns a commanding 10-game advantage over Oakland in the American League West race, while the Astros are one of three teams that have posted at least 75 wins this season (Dodgers and Yankees the others).

The Astros will be heavy favorites this weekend against the dreadful Orioles at Camden Yards as Wade Miley takes the mound in the series opener. Miley is the top southpaw in the loaded Houston rotation as the Astros have won six of his last seven starts, including four straight road victories. The last time Miley faced the O?s back in early June, the veteran tossed six scoreless innings in a 4-0 shutout as a -190 home favorite.

Coldest team: Pirates (2-15 last 17)

Pittsburgh has completely free-fallen since the All-Star break by winning only three games, while dropping 11 of 13 contests at PNC Park. The Pirates were swept by the Brewers at home this week, as Pittsburgh?s pitching staff yielded at least seven runs in four of five losses to Milwaukee and New York. The Bucs last allowed less than four runs in a game back on July 27 in a 3-0 setback to the Mets, while their last victory when giving up fewer than four runs came in a 5-1 win over Philadelphia on July 20.

The Pirates head to St. Louis to face the Cardinals, who have lost five consecutive games as well. Chris Archer is winless in his previous five trips to the mound, which includes a pair of one-run defeats to the Cardinals after the All-Star break. Archer last won a decision back on June 6 against Atlanta, while the most recent road win by Pittsburgh with the right-hander on the hill came on June 28 at Milwaukee.

Hottest pitcher: Shane Bieber, Indians (11-4, 3.31 ERA)

The Cleveland rotation has been decimated due to injuries this season, but Bieber has turned into the ace by picking up his 11th victory in last Sunday?s 6-2 triumph over the Angels. Bieber put together his second complete game of the season, while striking out eight batters and giving up two runs or fewer for the third straight appearance. Since joining the Indians? rotation last season, Bieber has turned in an impressive 22-9 record, while the Indians are 2-0 in his two starts against the Twins this season as Cleveland and Minnesota continue their series at Target Field.

Coldest pitcher: Tyler Beede, Giants (3-6, 5.38 ERA)

San Francisco profited nicely with Beede on the mound from June 11 through July 19 as the Giants posted a 6-1 record with every win coming in the underdog role. However, Beede has taken a step back of late with the Giants losing his last three appearances, as the former Vanderbilt standout has given up 28 hits and 13 runs in 14.1 innings of work. The run support hasn?t been there for Beede either during this recent stretch as San Francisco has scored a total of six runs in his past four starts. Beede starts against the Phillies on Friday, looking to atone for a 4-2 defeat at Citizens Bank Park last month.

Biggest OVER run: Orioles (9-1-2 last 12)

Baltimore?s pitching has been awful of late, but that mostly had to do with facing the Yankees, who lit up the Orioles all season. The Yankees scored 9, 9, and 14 runs in a three-game sweep at Camden Yards, easily eclipsing the OVER in all three contests. In fact, the O?s have allowed at least five runs in 10 of the past 11 games, while Baltimore has scored four runs or fewer in four of seven games on its current homestand. Dylan Bundy has seen the UNDER hit in each of his past two starts for Baltimore, while the O?s have plated at least four runs in each of his past six outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Cardinals (8-1 last nine)

St. Louis put together an impressive 12-2 record after the All-Star break, but the Cardinals? offense has dried up during their current 2-8 run. The Redbirds posted a total of seven runs on their five-game road trip against the Athletics and Dodgers, while scoring just two runs in a three-game sweep at the hands of Los Angeles. During this 10-game cold stretch, the Cardinals have been limited to two runs or fewer eight times, as St. Louis has fallen 3 ? games behind Chicago in the National League Central race. Dakota Hudson has seen the UNDER cash in five consecutive home starts as he faces the struggling Pirates at Busch Stadium.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Mets

On May 23, New York pulled off a four-game home sweep of Washington to send the Nationals to a 19-31 record. Washington has rebounded to post a 42-22 record and spring back into the NL Wild Card race, while New York has put together an unthinkable 13-1 run to sit one half-game out of the second Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Mets have swept three of their last four opponents, including a four-game sweep of the Marlins at Citi Field this week. New York has allowed two runs or less in four of the past five victories as the Mets turn to recently acquired Marcus Stroman (6-11, 3.07 ERA) in the series opener. Stroman didn?t finish five innings of work in his New York debut, while allowing three earned runs, but the Mets outlasted the Pirates, 7-5 last Saturday.

Stephen Strasburg (14-5, 3.72 ERA) is coming off his worst start of the season by giving up nine earned runs in 4.2 innings of an 18-7 setback at Arizona in his last outing. The Nationals had won Strasburg?s previous seven starts, while the offense put up double-digit runs in the three starts prior to the disaster in the desert last Saturday. The Nationals are 1-2 in Strasburg?s three outings against the Mets this season, including a 6-4 defeat at Citi Field as a hefty -180 favorite back on May 23.

Betcha didn?t know:
Mariners? left-hander Marco Gonzales was knocked around for 10 runs in a 13-3 home defeat to the Angels on June 3. Since that horrible outing, the southpaw has yielded a total of seven runs in his past four appearances at T-Mobile Park, while Seattle is 4-0 in that stretch. Gonzales gets the ball against Tampa Bay as the Rays have won five of their last six road contests.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Mike Fiers, Oakland Athletics (10-3, 3.46 ERA, $562 ):
Fiers is still on fire. The A's right-hander hasn't taken a loss in his last 17 starts, going 8-0 in the span while Oakland is 13-4. During that stretch Fiers has a 2.26 ERA and a WHIP of 1.02.

Fiers and the A's are -192 favorites in the afternoon matchup against the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox have lost four games in a row at home and are 0-7 in their previous seven games against a right-handed starter. The A's are 13-3 in the last 16 meetings in the head to head.

SLUMPING

Tyler Beede, San Francisco Giants (3-6, 5.38 ERA, $675):
Don't let that decent profit value fool you, betting on Beede has not been a good investment recently. In his last three starts the right-hander is 0-3 with a 8.16 ERA and a WHIP of 2.30 while giving up six dingers in 14 1-3 innings pitched.

Tonight, Beede and the Giants will host Drew Smyly and the Phillies as +100 'dogs. Smyly has also had his share of struggles this season and was 1-5 with a 8.42 ERA and 1.91 WHIP with the Rangers before being signed by the Phillies mid-July. The O/U is installed at 8.5.

3 STRIKES

FRIARS FREE TO HIT HOMERS

Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland allows 2.41 homeruns per nine innings pitched, the highest number among all starters in the majors. While a large part of that is due to his struggles at Coors Field where he has a 9.50 ERA and a BAA of .337, his ERA of 4.91 and WHIP of 1.41 on the road don't exactly inspire confidence either.

Freeland and the Rockies will be in San Diego today to face the Padres and starter Cal Quantrill. The Padres have loads of power at the plate with four sluggers having clubbed at least 22 home runs so far this season. The O/U is 9 and the Over has cashed in eight of the last nine meetings between these two sides.

LOOK TO THE OVER

The Dodgers will have Walker Buehler on the mound for tonight's matchup against the Diamondbacks. Buehler is 10-2 with a 3.22 ERA but he has given up eight runs in 10 innings against the D-backs at home this season. Arizona will give the ball to Robbie Ray who has an ERA of 5.09 while allowing seven dingers in his previous four starts.

The Dodgers are fifth in the majors in slugging percentage at home with .827 while Arizona is fourth in slugging on the road at .801. The total has been set at just 7.5, so the Over is definitely worth a look.

ROAD WORRIER

You can't blame Pirates fans if they're a bit worried for today's game in St. Louis, especially with Chris Archer on the mound. Archer is 0-4 with a 7.14 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in nine starts on the road and the Pirates are just 5-21 in their last 26 games overall.

The Cards will start Dakota Hudson (10-6, 3.99 ERA) and they are 11-3 in his previous 14 starts. St. Louis is also 20-8 in the last 28 meetings between the two sides. Betting on the Cardinals to win on the moneyline pays out at -135 on BetAmerica, while taking them on the run line pays out at a tidy +125.

Blue Jays cool off Yanks with 8-2 win
August 9, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Todd Frazier clobbered a tying three-run homer and Michael Conforto lined a game-ending single as the New York Mets stormed back in the ninth inning to stun the Washington Nationals 7-6 Friday night for their seventh straight win.

Trailing 6-3, the Mets rallied against Sean Doolittle to win for the 14th time in 15 games at pulsating Citi Field. The Nationals hold the top spot in the NL wild-card race, and the Mets are 1+ games behind them.

Mets rookie Pete Alonso homered in his fourth straight game, hitting his 38th of the season off Stephen Strasburg. J.D. Davis also connected.

Doolittle (6-4) blew his fifth save in 30 chances.

Luis Avila?n (3-0) got two outs for the win.

INDIANS 6, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Shane Bieber pitched into the eighth inning, Jose Ramirez had three hits and the Indians pulled into a tie with the Twins for the AL Central lead.

Cleveland trailed Minnesota by 11+ games on June 3 before putting together a 41-16 run, the best record in the majors since June 4. The Twins are 30-28 in those games and their division lead finally slipped away with their first four-game losing streak of the season.

Bieber (12-4) allowed a pair of home runs but struck out 11 in seven-plus innings.

Jason Castro and Eddie Rosario homered for Minnesota, which broke its franchise record for home runs in a season with its majors-leading total of 226. Devin Smeltzer (1-2) surrendered six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

BLUE JAYS 8, YANKEES 2

TORONTO (AP) - Brett Gardner lost his cool, and the Yankees lost their nine-game winning streak.

Teoscar Hernandez homered twice, Danny Jansen hit a three-run drive and Randal Grichuk added a two-run shot. Toronto connected three times off homer-prone lefty J.A. Happ (9-7).

Blue Jays rookie Bo Bichette went hitless for the first time in his 12-game career, ending a major league record streak that saw him hit at least one double in nine consecutive games.

Gardner was ejected and had to be restrained from going after home plate umpire Chris Segal in the fourth.

Mike Tauchman and Mike Ford hit solo home runs for the Yankees, who have two or more homers in a season-high eight straight games.

Blue Jays right-hander Sean Reid-Foley (2-2) allowed one run in five innings.

BRAVES 8, MARLINS

MIAMI (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a pair of two-run homers for NL East-leading Atlanta, and Julio Teheran extended his scoreless streak against Miami this season to 24 innings before allowing a run in the seventh.

Acuna homered for the fourth game in a row in the fifth inning, and homered again in the ninth to increase his season total to 32. Ozzie Albies went 4 for 5 and hit his 18th homer.

Teheran (7-7) pitched seven innings and departed with a 6-1 lead.

Starlin Castro homered for the Marlins' only run off Teheran in his four outings against them this year. The right-hander's ERA is 0.36 versus Miami and 4.02 against the rest of the majors.

Miami's Caleb Smith (7-6) allowed 10 hits and six runs, both season highs, in 4 2/3 innings.

ASTROS 3, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Wade Miley pitched impressively against his former team and Jose Altuve hit a pivotal RBI triple in the seventh inning, leading Houston to its seventh straight victory.

Alex Bregman drove in a run and scored for the Astros, who have won 17 of 20 to open a 10-game lead over Oakland in the AL West.

Miley (11-4) allowed one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The left-hander, who went 10-20 with Baltimore in 2016-17, is 5-0 in nine starts since June 17.

Roberto Osuna got three outs for his 26th save.

Jace Peterson and Stevie Wilkerson homered for the Orioles. Dylan Bundy (5-12) pitched six innings of two-run ball.

BREWERS 6, RANGERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit a game-ending homer to lift Milwaukee to the win after Josh Hader blew a save opportunity for the fourth time this season.

Milwaukee opened a 5-2 lead with three runs in the seventh, but Logan Forsythe hit a two-run homer off newly acquired reliever Jake Faria in the eighth and Elvis Andrus' solo shot off Hader tied it at 5 in the ninth.

Hader (2-5) threw a season-high 44 pitches in 1 2/3 innings.

Enter Thames, who hit his 16th homer against Emmanuel Clase (0-1) with two out in the ninth. Thames was mobbed by his teammates at the plate after ending a game that lasted more than 4 hours.

Milwaukee earned its fourth straight win and moved within 2+ games of NL Central-leading Chicago.

REDS 5, CUBS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Trevor Bauer fanned 11 batters in his Reds home debut, and Aristides Aquino homered again as Yasiel Puig's replacement.

The Reds' biggest July trade paid off both ways against the NL Central leaders. Cincinnati got Bauer from the Indians as part of a three-team deal last week, sending Puig - one of their hottest hitters at midseason - to Cleveland.

Bauer (10-8) allowed three hits in seven innings, including Nicholas Castellanos' third homer of the series.

Aquino hit a two-run homer off Yu Darvish (4-6), his fourth in eight games as Puig's fill-in. Eugenio Suarez and Joey Votto also connected for Cincinnati.

Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his 23rd save in 26 chances.

RED SOX 16, ANGELS 4

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez homered twice and just missed hitting a third out of Fenway Park, powering the Red Sox to the runaway win.

Mookie Betts, Rafael Devers and Mitch Moreland also homered for Boston, which is desperately trying to climb back into contention for a wild-card berth after an eight-game losing streak. The Red Sox tagged the Angels for 14 hits and won for the third time in four games.

Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer in the first for the Angels, who have lost eight straight. Jaime Barria (4-6) lost his third straight start.

Marcus Walden (7-1) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief after replacing Brian Johnson in the third inning.

CARDINALS 6, PIRATES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and Marcell Ozuna followed with a two-run homer, lifting St. Louis to the victory.

Goldschmidt's single went under the glove of Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman, scoring Dexter Fowler to break a 2-all tie. Five pitches later, Ozuna drove a 99 mph fastball from Richard Rodriguez (3-5) into the left field bullpen for his second homer in two games.

The rally made a winner out of Carlos Martinez (3-2), who pitched the final 1 1/3 innings as the Cardinals snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Pirates lost their sixth straight to drop to 4-22 since the All-Star break.

ATHLETICS 7, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Oakland right-hander Mike Fiers tossed seven sparkling innings to extend his career-best win streak to nine consecutive decisions.

Fiers (11-3) allowed three hits, struck out a season-high eight and walked none. The 34-year-old right-hander also hit two batters, but improved to 9-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 17 starts dating to his no-hitter on May 7 against Cincinnati.

Chad Pinder lined a two-run homer in the A's eighth win in their last 11 games. Matt Chapman and Stephen Piscotty also went deep.

Tim Anderson had two of Chicago's four hits. Ross Detwiler (1-3) permitted two runs in 5 1/3 innings.

TIGERS 5, ROYALS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Edwin Jackson pitched neatly into the seventh inning in his return to Detroit.

The Tigers, who topped Kansas City a day earlier, posted back-to-back wins at home for the first time since they swept the Royals in their first home series of the season. Detroit, which has the worst record in the majors, hadn't won two straight anywhere since a three-game winning streak in Baltimore and Atlanta from May 28-31.

Jackson (2-5) spent the 2009 season with the Tigers, going 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA. Ten years later, he was just as good, allowing one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Joe Jimenez got one out for his first save.

Kansas City's Whit Merrifield led off the game with his second career inside-the-park homer. Brad Keller (7-12) allowed five runs in six innings.

Saturday?s 6-pack

College football spreads for Labor Day weekend:

? Northwestern vs Stanford (-6.5)

? Virginia Tech (-2.5) vs Boston College

? Boise State vs Florida State (-4.5)

? SMU vs Arkansas State (-3)

? Virginia (-2.5) vs Pittsburgh

? Oregon vs Auburn (-3)

Quote of the Day
?At some point as a quarterback, you have to take a sack. That?s the play. But the guy has a little bit of a gunslinger mentality and likes to let it rip. Obviously, that was a nice one to Preston, but I think we want to play smarter than that in that situation. Not, just let the ball go like we did.?
Dolphins coach Brian Flores, talking about QB Josh Rosen

Saturday?s quiz
Where did Antonio Brown play his college football?

Friday?s quiz
Arizona Cardinals? coach Kliff Kingsbury played in one NFL game, back in 2005; he played that game for the Jets.

Thursday?s quiz
The Liberty Bowl is played in Memphis every year.

**********************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??..

13) This week, Toronto rookie Bo Bichette became the first player since 1900 to hit a double in nine straight games, and he did it in his 11th career game. Not a bad start to his career.

12) Patriots 31, Lions 3? Total yardage in this game was 459-93, in a freakin? preseason game. Neither starting QB played. I?m guessing the home fans weren?t too pleased with this showing.

This is where I remind you that Detroit fired coach Jim Caldwell after consecutive 9-7 seasons, so they could hire New England?s defensive coordinator, who then went 6-10 LY.

Last time the Lions won a playoff game was 1991. No bueno.

11) I still struggle with analyzing NFL exhibition games and figuring out how much they mean; the Ravens never lose them, the Falcons never win one. Outcomes of a lot of the games will be decided by guys who will be bartenders or driving UPS trucks in a few weeks.

Most coaches don?t game plan for exhibition games, but some do; Arizona Cardinals huddled in their game Thursday, but aren?t expected to huddle at all on September 8.

Avoiding injuries and determining who will win the final roster spots are really the most important part of these games.

10) Two years ago, Cleveland Browns went 4-0 in preseason, allowing a total of 29 points. There was a lot of optimism on Lake Erie. Then they went 0-16 in the regular season.

For most part, I would disregard scores of exhibition games; injuries to key people matter, like the Eagles losing their backup QB for six weeks Thursday.

9) Titans 27, Eagles 10? Eagles? backup QB Nate Sudfeld broke his left (non-throwing) wrist Thursday night; the other two backup QB?s on Philly?s roster are suspects more than prospects, so they better keep oft-injured starter Carson Wentz healthy while Sudfeld?s wrist heals.

8) If any of you play fantasy soccer or are interested in starting to do it, here is an article I recommend, because my godson wrote it and he knows a lot about soccer:

https://www.fanduel.com/theduel/pos...ntasy-soccer-for-the-2019-season-01dhpnjtft7a

7) Baseball stuff:
? Mets signed 2B Joe Panik, who was cut by the Giants the other day.
? Twins put DH Nelson Cruz (wrist) on IL.

6) Someone bet $10,000 on the Vikings at CG Technology Friday, at 20-1 odds, which is a lot of faith in a team whose $28M a year QB has never won a playoff game.

5) Bill Walton is going to broadcast a White Sox game with Jason Benetti when the Pale Hose go to Anaheim next Friday. They?ve done college basketball games together, but there is lot more dead time in a baseball broadcast. This should be interesting.

4) In case you wondering, Bryce Harper has hit his 204 career home runs off of 159 different pitchers.

3) BYU basketball star Yoeli Childs will miss the first nine games this coming season because of a paperwork screw-up when he declared for the NBA draft last May, then decided to return to BYU after testing the draft waters.

2) This Antonio Brown thing isn?t going well??.according to Mike Silver:

???..Brown, according to witnesses, typically glances at the screens of several tablets and his smart phone during meetings, distracting himself by engaging in activities which include perusing his bank accounts and ?liking? photos on Instagram.?

?the meeting thing isn?t that bad? but the feet, helmet and going dark is an issue.?

1) Chargers? backup QB Easton Stick has a great name; how many guys you know who are named after an aluminum bat? Stick was 49-3 playing QB at North Dakota State, where he took over for Carson Wentz. He looked good playing ball in Arizona Thursday night.

Weekend Watch
Joe Williams

Saturday, Aug. 10

The Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins square off in Miami on Saturday evening at 6:10 p.m. ET, and RHP Mike Soroka looks to stay hot against RHP Sandy Alcantara in a battle of All-Star righties. The Braves look to stay hot with Soroka on the hill. Atlanta is 13-0 across the past 13 starts by Soroka when facing a team with a losing record, they're 9-0 in his past nine outings on the road against a losing club and 11-1 in his past 12 inside the National League East Division. They're also 6-1 in his past seven starts on the road, 18-5 in his past 23 starts overall and 4-1 in his past five outings working on four days of rest. Atlanta has posted 16 victories over the past 21 road games against teams with a home winning percentage under .400, too.

For the Marlins, they have won just once in the past seven games overall, while going 1-4 in the past five against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also 20-48 in the past 68 games inside the NL East, too. Miami has also dropped five straight starts against a right-handed starting pitcher, while going 2-11 in the past 13 against a starting pitcher with a WHIP under 1.15. The Marlins have won just seven of the past 26 starts by Alcantara, while going 1-6 in his past seven home outings. They're also 0-4 in his past four inside the division, and 1-7 in the past eight when working on eight days of rest.

Overall, Atlanta has won 35 of the past 51 meetings in this series, while going 54-26 in the past 80 meetings in Miami. While the under is 12-5-1 in the past 18 meetings, the over has connected in five of the past seven in South Florida.

The Cleveland Indians have won the first two games on their key AL Central Division battle with the Minnesota Twins, pulling into a tie for first place. The Twins had a double-digit lead inside the division shortly before the All-Star break. RHP Adam Plutko and RHP Jake Odorizzi will battle on Saturday for first place.

The Indians have managed 12 victories in the past 14 road games, and they're 5-1 in the past six against teams with a winning overall mark. They have also picked up four straight wins on the road vs. RHP, while going 38-15 across the past 53 games, best mark in the majors since mid-June. They have won four straight starts by Plutko on the road, while cashing in seven of his past eight starts overall, including 4-1 in his past five games inside the division.

The Twins have faltered, winning just once in the past six against winning teams. However, they're still 17-5 in the past 22 games played on a Saturday, and 37-15 in the past 52 inside the AL Central. While they're 1-10 in the past 11 in Game 3 of a series, Odorizzi could be the stopper. The Twins have won eight of his past 10 starts at home, while going 5-1 in his past six starts inside the AL Central, and seven of his past 10 outings against teams with a winning record. They're also 15-4 in his past 19 outings overall.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and LHP Alex Young try and tame RHP Kenta Maeda and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. The Snakes have won four of the past five, and they're 11-4 in the past 15 road games against a team with a home winning percentage over .600. The Dodgers have won five of the past six vs. LHP, while going 53-22 in the past 75 inside the NL West. They're also a whopping 41-11 in the past 52 games at home. L.A. is 7-3 in the past 10 home outings by Maeda, too, while hitting in six of his past eight against teams with a winning overall record. However, L.A. has managed just one win in the past seven starts by Maeda against the Diamondbacks, and the over is 9-4 in his past 13 vs. Arizona.

Weather Report
The Angels and Red Sox will be squaring off at Fenway Park with a 10-13 mph wind blowing out toward Pesky's Pole in right field. Outside of that game, the winds will be light and variable across all other MLB venues with no chance of precipitation across the board.

Sunday, Aug. 11

The Pittsburgh Pirates use LHP Steven Brault against the St. Louis Cardinals in Sunday's series finale. Brault has no-decisions in four straight outings, and six of his past seven. The Pirates are 0-3 across his past three outings, and 2-5 in his past seven starts overall. In his only start against the Cardinals, Brault allowed six earned runs, nine hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision on May 12 at Busch Stadium. RHP Miles Mikolas will face the Bucs, and it's good he is at home. He has posted a 2-7 record and 6.34 ERA across 59 2/3 innings in 12 outings on the road, but he is 5-5 with a 1.98 ERA and .230 opponent batting average in 11 home starts.

Colorado Rockies RHP German Marquez will lock horns with San Diego Padres RHP Dinelson Lamet at Petco Park. Unlike many pitchers, Marquez's split solidly favor him on the road. He is 4-2 with a 6.45 ERA in 68 1/3 innings at Coors Field, and 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA in 86 2/3 innings on the road. The opponent is hitting .320 against him at home, and just .209 on the road. While he is 2-0 across two starts against San Diego, he also has a terrible 7.15 ERA and .385 opponent batting average.

As far as Lamet is concerned, this will be just his third outing at home. He is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA and .250 opponent batting average across 10 innings at Petco. This will be his first appearance against the Rockies this season. His only previous appearance against Colorado came on July 18, 2017 at Coors Field, allowing six runs - five earned - and four hits with four walks across four innings in a 9-7 loss.

The Philadelphia Phillies wrap up their three-game set at Oracle Park against the San Francisco Giants. RHP Jake Arrieta takes ball against rookie LHP Conner Menez in the nationally-televised battle. Arrieta enters 8-8 with a 4.30 ERA, but he hasn't won a start since June 30 in Miami. The Phillies are still a respectable 3-2 over his past five starts, and they're 2-2 in his past four outings on the road. The last time he faced San Francisco was on Aug. 1 in Philly, allowing two runs - one earned - and four hits with a walk and five strikeouts across four innings. It was another no-decision for Arrieta, as he didn't last long enough to qualify for the win.

Weather Report
On Sunday, the only MLB venue which will be affected by the weather is at Oracle Park in San Francisco. The wind will be blowing out from 10-13 mph to straightaway center field. Precipitation will once again stay away across the board.
