Suárez hits 2-run homer in 9th as Reds beat Cubs 6-5
May 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Cubs reliever Steve Cishek, rallying the Cincinnati Reds past Chicago 6-5 on Friday.

Joey Votto drew a leadoff walk from Cishek (1-2) and Suarez hit the next pitch for his 14th home run.

Yasiel Puig hit a two-run homer and an RBI single for the Reds after missing two games with a sprained right shoulder.

Anthony Rizzo homered for the third straight game, and Kyle Schwarber and Kris Bryant also went deep for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who have lost three of four to the last-place Reds this season.

Pinch-hitter Willson Contreras singled home Rizzo in the eighth to put Chicago ahead 5-4. Jesse Winker's double off Brad Brach in the Reds seventh tied it at 4.

David Hernandez (1-2) got one out and the win. Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th in 13 chances.

PADRES 6, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Hunter Renfroe hit a tiebreaking, three-run home run in the eighth inning, Greg Garcia and Austin Hedges also went deep, and San Diego got its fourth straight win.

Toronto became the first team to start two players with Hall of Fame fathers after calling up Cavan Biggio - son of Craig - for his big league debut. Biggio started at second and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was at third.

Renfroe snapped a 3-3 tie by homering on an 0-2 pitch from right-hander Daniel Hudson (3-2). It was his 12th home run of the season.

Matt Wisler (2-1) got one out for the win and Craig Stammen finished for his second save in six opportunities.

Freddy Galvis hit a two-run homer and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a solo shot, but Toronto lost its fourth straight to fall to 6-16 in May.

TIGERS 9, METS 8

NEW YORK (AP) - JaCoby Jones homered and drove in four runs, including a go-ahead double in the seventh inning, and Miguel Cabrera also connected as Detroit snapped a nine-game losing streak.

Detroit blew an early 4-0 lead and later rallied three times from one-run deficits.

New York hit five home runs, including a tiebreaking shot by pinch-hitter Aaron Altherr off winner Buck Farmer (3-3) in his first plate appearance with the Mets. Amed Rosario, Adeiny Hechavarria, Pete Alonso and Wilson Ramos also went deep for New York.

Detroit got four hits from the No. 9 spot in the lineup, including an RBI single by pinch-hitter Brandon Dixon in the seventh that made it 9-7. More stunning were two singles off Noah Syndergaard (on 95-plus mph pitches) by Tigers starting pitcher Gregory Soto, who had never batted in the minors or majors before.

Dixon's hit followed Jones' two-run double with two outs off Drew Gagnon (3-1).

Shane Greene got three quick outs for his 16th save.

ASTROS 4, RED SOX 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Jake Marisnick homered early off Chris Sale, then made two dazzling defensive plays in center field to help Houston get the win.

The Red Sox, who committed three errors, ended Ryan Pressly's MLB-record streak of 40 straight scoreless appearances when Jackie Bradley Jr. launched the first pitch from the Houston reliever for a home run in the eighth inning.

Wade Miley (5-2) yielded four hits and two runs in six innings, striking out a season-high eight to win his fourth straight decision.

Christian Vazquez homered off Roberto Osuna with two outs in the ninth, but the Houston closer struck out Bradley for his 13th save.

Sale (1-6) gave up three hits and four runs in six innings.

DODGERS 10, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - David Freese hit a grand slam off opener Michael Feliz and Cody Bellinger added his 18th homer, helping Los Angeles beat Pittsburgh.

The Pirates gave Feliz (2-1) his first major league start in 157 career appearances in an effort to address their injury-riddled starting rotation. The move backfired. Feliz recorded just one out and exited after Freese sent a pitch into the first row of seats in right-center field for his fourth homer of the season and third career grand slam.

Bellinger hit a two-run shot in seventh off Geoff Hartlieb. By then the Dodgers had things well in hand. Bellinger finished 1 for 5, and his major league-leading batting average dipped to .389.

Walker Buehler (5-1) cruised after being given the early cushion, giving up one run and five hits in six innings.

INDIANS 3, RAYS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Roberto Perez's crawling infield single scored Francisco Lindor with the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth inning as Cleveland snapped a season-high, four-game losing streak.

With the bases loaded, Perez, who returned to the lineup after missing two games with a concussion, hit a slow roller off Jose Alvarado (0-4) that third baseman Daniel Robertson charged but couldn't field with his bare hand.

Alvarado then walked Jake Bauers to force in Carlos Santana, giving the Indians a 3-1 lead. Alvarado, who replaced Cy Young winner Blake Snell in the seventh, walked three in the eighth.

A.J. Cole (2-1) struck out the side in the eighth and Brad Hand worked the ninth for his 13th save in 13 tries.

Jordan Luplow homered in the fourth off Snell for the Indians.

NATIONALS 12, MARLINS 10

WASHINGTON (AP) - Juan Soto and Matt Adams hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning and Washington snapped a five-game losing streak.

Soto's three-run shot off Marlins reliever Tayron Guerrero was his eighth homer of the season and put the Nationals ahead for the first time at 11-9. Adams provided insurance with his fourth homer of the season, and 100th of his career.

Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon drew one-out walks off Nick Anderson (1-2) before Soto's homer.

Sean Doolittle gave up a homer to Jorge Alfaro in the ninth before earning his ninth save.

Starlin Castro's two-out, RBI single off Kyle Barraclough (1-1) in the eighth gave Miami a 9-8 lead. But it wasn't enough as Miami had its six-game winning streak snapped.

Brian Anderson and Curtis Granderson homered for Miami. Eaton and Rendon also homered for Washington.

BRAVES 5, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Dansby Swanson homered twice and Freddie Freeman also connected, helping Mike Foltynewicz and Atlanta beat St. Louis.

Swanson drove Miles Mikolas' first pitch of the sixth inning over the wall in left, giving Atlanta a 2-1 lead. Freeman then hit his 13th homer, giving Atlanta its third set of back-to-back homers this season.

Foltynewicz (1-3) allowed an unearned run in six innings in his first win since Sept. 28. The right-hander struck out seven and walked none.

Swanson helped put it away with a two-run drive off Giovanny Gallegos in the eighth for his 10th homer. It was his second career multihomer game.

Mikolas (4-5) matched his career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings. He was charged with three runs and seven hits.

Donovan McNabb

Saturday?s quiz
How many teams are in the Canadian Football League?

Friday?s quiz
WNBA teams play 34 regular season games each season.

Thursday?s quiz
Bill Laimbeer is the head coach/GM of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA.

****************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) George Springer leads the American League in homers and RBIs; he bats leadoff. No leadoff hitter has ever led their league in homers or RBI for a full season.

Springer hurt his left leg in Friday night?s game and appears headed to the IL.

12) Fran Fraschilla posted a note on Twitter this week that college basketball coaches spend 30% of their time on actual basketball. NBA coaches spend 99% of their time on basketball, and that is the appeal of the NBA to guys like Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, John Beilein.

11) From 2011-18, when Max Scherzer started a game, his teams went 176-85 in those games.

This season, Washington is 2-9 when Scherzer starts. Go figure.

10) Findlay Prep in Las Vegas, which has won three National High School Invitational basketball championships, isn?t expected to field a team next season. Findlay had a run of 11 consecutive appearances in the national tournament stopped this year- the school is going to look for a new campus and could resume play for the 2020-21 season.

Since starting the program in the 2006-07 season, Findlay is 378-43; they could have three alums taken in the NBA Draft in June.

9) Raiders-Packers might play a preseason game in Winnipeg this summer. Seriously.

8) There are four NFL head coaches who played QB in either the Arena League or the Indoor Football League:
? Jay Gruden: Tampa Bay Storm, Orlando Predators, Nashville Kats
? Matt LaFleur, Omaha Beef, Billings Outlaws

? Matt Nagy: New York Dragons, Carolina Cobras, Georgia Force, Columbus Destroyers
? Sean Payton: Chicago Bruisers, Pittsburgh Gladiators

7) Baseball stuff:
? A?s put DH Khris Davis (oblique) on IL.
? Marlins put C Chad Wallach (concussion) on IL.
? Arizona put OF David Peralta (AC joint) on IL.
? Mets signed Ervin Santana, Matt Kemp to contracts.

6) This week in 1935 in Cincinnati, the first-ever night baseball game was played; there were 20,422 fans there to see the Reds beat the Phillies, 2-1.

5) Kansas Jayhawks get Silvio DeSousa eligible to play this coming basketball season, which is very good news for them.

4) Former Baylor football coach Art Briles is the new coach at Mount Vernon HS in Texas.

3) In case you were wondering, the 2011 Mets went 77-85; they left 1,257 men on base that year, the most of any team in this decade. Six of the top nine teams on this list won 91+ games.

#8 on the list are the 2016 Cubs, who won the World Series that year.

2) Tres Tinkle dropped out of the NBA Draft and will return to Oregon State for his senior year; he is a very good player, but his dad is also the OSU head coach. Beavers finished 10-8 in Pac-12 games last year, their first winning season in conference play this century.

1) Chicago Bears are -4 over Green Bay in Week 1 this season; Bears are getting 59% of the money so far, in wagering at William Hill sportsbooks nationwide; of the 16 Week 1 games, that is the game where the money is most evenly divided.

LEADING OFF: Morton's streak, Biggio's bid, Wacha's move
May 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

WHAT A STRING

Rays right-hander Charlie Morton hasn't lost in his last 17 starts, going 7-0 with a 3.21 ERA in a span that started last August with Houston. Morton (4-0, 2.65) faces Carlos Carrasco and the Indians in Cleveland.

Morton's streak is the second-longest active run behind Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers, who is 10-0 over his last 19 starts.

ROOKIE BLUES

Cavan Biggio tries again for his first major league hit when the Blue Jays host San Diego. The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio struck out twice in going 0 for 3 in his debut for Toronto on Friday.

The 24-year-old infielder was hitting .307 with six home runs and 26 RBIs when he was called up from Triple-A this week.

`PEN MAN

The Cardinals say struggling right-hander Michael Wacha is going to work out of the bullpen. He is 2-2 with a 6.39 ERA in his last five starts.

The 27-year-old Wacha last pitched in relief on Sept. 26, 2016. He was the NL Championship Series MVP as a rookie in 2013 and an All-Star in 2015.

St. Louis is hosting Atlanta this weekend.

SOON?

The Mets are hoping to have outfielder Michael Conforto back in the lineup this weekend. He was eligible to come off the seven-day concussion list on Friday, but wasn't activated. The team is waiting for Conforto to be cleared by Major League Baseball and that could come while the Tigers are still in town.

WELCOME BACK

David Freese heard a familiar sound when he came to the plate at PNC Park as the Dodgers opened a series in Pittsburgh - the ballpark speakers briefly blasted Freese's walk-up song, a tribute of sorts to the veteran third baseman who played two-plus seasons in Pittsburgh before being traded to Los Angeles last summer.

Given that greeting in the first inning, Freese responded by hitting the third grand slam of his career.

Weekend Watch

Saturday, May 25

The Red Sox and Astros continue their series, a rematch of the American League Championship Series last season. LHP David Price takes the ball, while the Astros look to avenge a series-clinching win by the southpaw in that ALCS battle. The Red Sox are 11-4 across their past 15 road games, and 7-3 in the past 10 against American League West opponents. In addition, they're 16-7 over the past 23 games overall. In addition, they're 5-2 in Price's past seven showings against AL West foes, while going 8-2 in his past 10 road outings against teams with an overall winning record. They're also 7-3 in his past 10 starts while working on four days of rest.

The Astros have cashed in six of their past seven against AL East foes, and they're also 6-1 over RHP Brad Peacock's past seven outings at home. Houston is 19-7 in his past 26 starts overall, too, but just 2-5 in his past seven at home against a team with a winning record, while going 6-16 over his past 22 while working on four days of rest. Houston has won 35 of the past 51 at home, while going 5-2 in the past seven at home against a left-handed starter. They're also 23-9 in the past 32 overall vs. LHP, and 8-3 in the past 11 at home against teams with a winning overall record.

The under is a perfect 6-0 in Boston's past six against teams with a winning overall record, while going 4-0 in their past four against AL West foes. The under is also 7-2-1 in the past 10 starts by Price, while hitting in each of his past five against winning teams. The under is also 6-1-1 in the past eight starts on grass for the left-hander. For Houston, the under is an impressive 8-1 over the past nine outings, while 5-0-1 in the past six at home against winning teams. The under is also 4-1-1 in the past six vs. LHP, while going 20-8-1 in their past 29 against winning sides. The under is also 8-3-1 in the past 12 home outings by Peacock, and 5-0 in the past five meetings in this series.

In late-night action, the Rangers and Angels will square off in a southpaw battle, as LHP Mike Minor looks to stay hot against LHP Tyler Skaggs. Minor has won each of his past two outings, including a quality start last time out on May 20 against Seattle when he allowed just two earned runs, six hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts, his second double-digit K performance of the season. He allowed just three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in a complete-game shutout on April 16 against the Halos, too.

Texas has won five in a row, while going a perfect 6-0 across the past six against losing teams. They're also 8-3 across Minor's past 11 inside the division, while going 10-4 in his past 14 against losing squads. The Rangers are a dismal 8-23 across the past 31 road games vs. LHP, however. For the Angels, they have won just once in the past 10 tries against divisional foes, while going 2-12 in the past 14 home games against teams with a winning overall record. They also enter on a five-game losing streak, while going 0-8 in the past eight at home vs. LHP. In addition, the Halos are just 2-5 in the past seven starts for Skaggs against the AL West, and 2-6 in his past eight at home against winning teamggoogoo

Weather Report
Wind will be a huge factor in Saturday's early slate. The winds will be blowing 11-13 mph to straightaway center field for the White Sox-Twins game in Target Field. The same holds true for Game 1 of the Yankees-Royals day-night doubleheader at Kauffman Stadium, blowing 11-14 mph to center. On the north side, the Reds and Cubs will be contending with winds of 11-14 mph blowing to the right-center field power alley.

In the mid-afternoon games wind will also be a factor. The Tigers and Mets will face 12-15 mph winds blowing out to left field. The Rays and Indians will be playing beat the clock, as the rains are expected to move in right before the end of the game. During the contest they'll face a jetstream of 13-16 mph blowing out to right field.

Sunday, May 26

Sunday's battle between LHP Eduardo Rodriguez and Astros RHP Justin Verlander should be an entertaining pitcher's duel. The BoSox are 13-4 across E-Rod's past 17 road outings, 40-17 in his past 57 starts and 7-3 over his past 10 away assignments against teams with a winning overall mark. And, for what it's worth, they're 7-1 in his past eight starts on a Sunday. As far as the Astros are concerned, they're 4-0 in Verlander's past four at home, and 8-2 across his past 10 outings against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also 41-17 in Verlander's past 58 starts overall.

The Mariners and Athletics tangle in the series finale, with RHP Mike Leake and LHP Brett Anderson locking horns. Seattle has struggled against southpaws, going 1-8 in the past nine vs. LHP and 0-6 in the past six on the road against lefties. They're also just 1-6 in Leake's past seven outings, and 0-4 in his past four on the road. For the A's, they're an impressive 5-1 in the past six home outings by Anderson, while going 10-1 in the past 11 home outings against teams with a losing overall mark. However, they're just 1-4 in Anderson's past five starts inside the division.

RHP Julio Teheran and RHP Jack Flaherty will face each other on Sunday Night Baseball. The Braves are 4-1 in Teheran's past five against NL Central foes, and 22-6 in his past 28 appearnces on a Sunday. Overall, Atlanta likes playing on Sunday, going 25-9 in their past 34. For the Cards, they're in a tailspin lately, and Flaherty might not be the guy to pull them out of their nosedive. The Cards are 5-11 in Flaherty's past 16 starts, and 1-4 in his past five outings against NL East foes. As far as the total is concerned, the under is 5-1 in Teheran's past six starts, and 4-0 in his past four on the road. The under is 4-1 in Flaherty's past five, too, although the over is 9-2 in his past 11 outings against teams with a winning record.

Weather Report
For the second straight day, the Rays and Indians will be facing the threat of rain in the later innings, although the game should get in mostly uninterrupted. The same cannot be said for the finale between the Dodgers and Pirates, as they're facing 30-40 percent chance of showers, increasing as the afternoon progresses.

In the Bay Area, the Diamondbacks and Athletics will face a jetstream of 12-15 mph blowing out to the left-center field power alley with a threat of showers. The Mariners and Athletics will face similar conditions across the bay, with 11-14 mph winds blowing out to left-center field.

Diamond Trends - Saturday
May 25, 2019
By Vince Akins

PLAY-ON TREND OF THE DAY:

-- The Rockies are 19-0 SU as a 140-plus favorite off a home game in which they hit at least one home run.

PLAY-AGAINST TREND OF THE DAY:

-- The Marlins are 0-21 SU as a 115-plus dog off a game as a dog in which they allowed five-plus walks and it is before the All-Star break.

HITTER-BASED TREND OF THE DAY:

-- The Astros are 14-0 SU since Jul 31, 2018 after George Springer was hitless in at least three at bats last game.

PITCHER-BASED TREND OF THE DAY:

-- The Dodgers are 12-0 SU when Hyun Jin Ryu starts as a favorite when they scored more than six runs in his last start.

MONSTER TRENDS:

-- The Rangers are 6-0 SU as a road dog in the second game of a series after a game in which they scored first, trailed and then came back to win and it is before the All-Star break. Texas was an average of plus 126.6 on the moneyline, and playing ON them has produced an ROI of +128.5%.

-- The Rockies are 12-0 SU as a home 130-plus favorite when their opponent's starter has an ERA of higher than four on the season, winning by an average of 7.00 runs.

Wkd Series Prices - Best Bets
May 24, 2019

MLB Weekend Series Prices Best Bets

The winning streak was halted at one last weekend as the Boston Red Sox struggled with the Astros in the first two games of their weekend set, and narrowly avoided getting swept at home in the finale with Sale on the hill. Those two teams renew acquaintances this weekend in Houston, but after grabbing a unit from me last weekend, that's not a series I'm looking to invest in a week later.

Instead, it's over to the National League this weekend for another return match from a series a week ago, with the Phillies visiting the Brewers. Milwaukee went into Philadelphia at the beginning of last week and took three of four, and you know Philly would love some measure of revenge for those defeats.

Will they be able to get it? Or will Milwaukee continue to pile up the wins at home as they enter the weekend 17-9 SU on their own diamond.

Bookmaker.eu Odds: Philadelphia (+140) vs Milwaukee (-160)

It's hard not to have fleeting thoughts about this being a potential NL playoff series later on down the line, as both teams should be involved in October baseball if they each stay on their current course. Milwaukee actually has a bit more work to do in that sense as they aren't even leading their division right now (1.5 games behind the Cubs), but it's still much too early to really give the standings too much weight at the top. Everyone saw this Brewers team make the NLCS last season, and through two months of this year, they look like a squad that could end up duplicating that result.

Yet, this -160 price tag looks awfully steep for the Brewers this weekend given the situation, as you know the Phillies haven't forgotten about the embarrassment they felt at home last week. Granted, you beat a team three straight on their own diamond recently and then welcome them into town shortly after, the Brewers deserve to be laying some chalk here, but 60 cents on the dollar is a lot to ask.

Philadelphia is not just an 'ordinary' team either, as they've got a lethal lineup when the majority of the guys in it are rolling, and while the bullpen continues to hamper them at times and has easily cost Philly at least a handful of wins, should get a solid three days performance from them this weekend, this price will look completely overvalued in hindsight. That's not to say we should be relying on the Phillies bullpen, but a three-game sample size is so small in the grand scheme of things that a strong performance by that Philly bullpen can't be ruled out.

Considering the Brewers outscored Philly 22-6 in their three wins last week it's not like there aren't legitimate arguments in favor of backing Milwaukee this weekend, especially since the Phillies have the same three starters ? Eickhoff, Arrieta, Eflin ? lined up to go this weekend as well. But Milwaukee won't have their #1 guy in Zach Davies going this time around, and while Brandon Woodruff is the only repeat starter on their end (6-1 SU record, 3.51 ERA), in my view he's a great regression candidate in this Milwaukee pitching staff to come back down to earth a bit relatively soon.

With the Phillies having won six of their last eight games ? all coming after losing three of four to Milwaukee ? current form is on Philly's side as well. At this price, with this situational dynamic tending to side with Philly getting some measure of revenge this weekend, it's the road team that I'm backing this weekend to get the job done. Philly's bats are too loaded from top to bottom not to find some level of success this weekend, and taking two of three should be the end result.

Hedges hits grand slam as Padres pound Blue Jays 19-4
May 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Austin Romine and Cameron Maybin each drove in two runs during New York's five-run second inning, and the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Saturday night to complete a doubleheader sweep and run their win streak to seven in a row.

Maybin also had an RBI single in the third as New York won both games after severe thunderstorms postponed Friday night's contest.

Luke Voit hit a go-ahead home in the seventh inning to power the Yankees to a 7-3 victory in the opener. J.A. Happ (4-3) struck out 10 in six innings.

Chance Adams (1-0) threw four innings to earn his first major league victory in the second game after Chad Green threw one inning as the Yankees' opener. Aroldis Chapman earned his 250th career save.

Kansas City's Hunter Dozier doubled twice after going hitless in the opener, driving in Adalberto Mondesi in the first inning and coming around to score on Jorge Soler's double in the fourth inning.

Scott Barlow (1-1) and Jorge Lopez (0-6) got the losses for the Royals.

ASTROS 4, RED SOX 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Correa hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to give Houston the win.

After Boston tied it in the top of the inning, Aledmys Diaz led off the bottom half with a double to left off Matt Barnes (2-1). Following walks to Alex Bregman and Michael Brantley, Correa hit a blooper down the right-field line over a five-man infield.

Roberto Osuna (3-0) got the win despite allowing two runs and three hits in the ninth.

Red Sox left-hander David Price lasted three batters and 15 pitches before leaving with two out in the first due to flu-like symptoms.

PADRES 19, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Austin Hedges connected for a grand slam, and San Diego hit a franchise-record seven home runs to romp to its fifth straight win.

Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe each hit two home runs and Ian Kinsler and Eric Hosmer also homered. The previous team record was six, set in Cincinnati on July 17, 1998.

Hedges hit his first career slam and drove in five runs.

Cal Quantrill (1-2), from nearby Port Hope, Ontario, and the son of former major league pitcher Paul Quantrill, earned his first win in his fourth career start.

Edwin Jackson (0-2) got the loss, allowing seven runs in four innings.

PHILLIES 7, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jake Arrieta pitched eight effective innings and Andrew McCutchen homered, leading Philadelphia to its third consecutive win.

Cesar Hernandez, Rhys Hoskins and J.T. Realmuto also connected for the NL East leaders. Hoskins finished with three hits and two RBIs.

Arrieta (5-4) allowed two runs and five hits, struck out eight and walked one in his first win since April 27.

Mike Moustakas hit his 13th homer for Milwaukee, which lost for the fifth time in seven games. Jhoulys Chacin (3-6) allowed four runs in five innings.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell and Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun were both ejected by plate umpire Mike Estabrook.

RAYS 6, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Charlie Morton struck out a season-high 10 and Ji-Man Choi and Tommy Pham homered, helping Tampa Bay beat Cleveland in a game delayed for nearly three hours because of an incorrect weather forecast.

Morton (5-0) extended his unbeaten streak to a career-best 18 starts dating to August, allowing one run in six innings. The right-hander has an 8-0 record with a 3.10 ERA in that stretch.

Choi hit a tiebreaking two-run shot in the fifth, and Pham made it 6-1 with another two-run drive in the seventh. Brandon Lowe also connected for a solo homer in the sixth off Carlos Carrasco (4-5).

The first pitch was postponed from 4:10 until 6:58 because of expected thunderstorms that never materialized. The conditions remained dry and warm throughout the delay, except for a several-minute spell of light rain.

TWINS 8, WHITE SOX 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Kyle Gibson struck out nine in seven innings, and the Twins beat the White Sox 8-1 for their 10th win in 11 games.

Gibson (5-2) gave up five hits and walked none. His only blemish was Jose Abreu's leadoff homer in the fourth inning.

C.J. Cron and Ehire Adrianza each drove in four runs for Minnesota.

White Sox starter Manny Banuelos (2-4) returned after missing his last turn in the rotation with a sore shoulder. He allowed five runs in four innings.

CUBS 8, REDS 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Addison Russell homered at Wrigley Field for the first time since he was suspended for violating baseball's domestic violence policy, leading the Cubs to a wild victory.

With the wind blowing out on a warm day at the iconic neighborhood ballpark, Albert Almora Jr. and Jason Heyward also connected to help the NL Central-leading Cubs rebound from their disappointing loss in the series opener Friday. Tyler Chatwood gave Chicago's weary bullpen a lift by working the ninth for his first save since 2017.

Tucker Barnhart, Yasiel Puig and Derek Dietrich homered for the last-place Reds.

Dietrich's 13th homer tied it at 6 in the eighth. But the Cubs went ahead to stay on David Bote's RBI double against Jared Hughes (2-2) in the bottom half.

Dillon Maples (1-0) got two outs for the win.

ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 5

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mike Fiers won in his first start at the Coliseum since pitching a no-hitter this month, and the Athletics handed the Mariners their fifth straight loss.

Matt Chapman homered and Ramon Laureano doubled in his fifth straight game, matching Miguel Tejada for the Oakland record.

Domingo Santana hit two homers and Mitch Haniger also connected for Seattle, which has lost eight of nine. Yusei Kikuchi (3-2) lasted just 3 1/3 innings.

Fiers (4-3) permitted three runs in six innings. Blake Treinen got his 10th save in 12 tries.

METS 5, TIGERS 4, 13 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Tomas Nido homered against Buck Farmer leading off the 13th inning, Wilson Ramos homered twice and the Mets beat the Tigers for another comeback victory during a wild homestand.

Nido drove a 2-0 pitch from Farmer (3-4) narrowly over the wall in right-center, ending a game full of wasted chances for both teams.

New York has won five of six at Citi Field this week despite trailing in all but one of those games. That comes after the front office spoke up Monday to defend embattled manager Mickey Callaway. The Mets (25-26) can climb back to .500 with a win Sunday.

Hector Santiago (1-0) pitched two innings for the win.

Detroit was 1 for 13 with runners with runners in scoring position and stranded 14. New York left seven on base.

DIAMONDBACKS 10, GIANTS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ketel Marte homered for the second consecutive day, powering Arizona to the win.

Ildemaro Vargas drove in two runs and scored twice for Arizona. Kevin Cron added a double and two RBIs in his major league debut.

Taylor Clarke (1-1) pitched into the seventh and allowed three runs for his first career win.

Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and scored a run in his major league debut with the Giants.

Marte tripled and scored leading off the game before homering off Andrew Suarez (0-2) leading off the third.

NATIONALS 5, MARLINS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Patrick Corbin pitched a four-hitter for his second career shutout, helping Washington to the victory.

Corbin (5-2) struck out five and walked one. Yan Gomes' three-run double to right field capped a five-run fourth inning for the Nationals.

Harold Ramirez had two of Miami's four hits. Sandy Alcantara (2-5) surrendered five runs - four earned - and six hits in five innings.

CARDINALS 6, BRAVES 3

DODGERS 7, PIRATES 2

*****************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??.

13) Was watching a ballgame the other day; Pittsburgh shifted against a lefty hitter, putting the 3B where the SS usually is, which confuses me.

Why not just leave the SS where he is supposed to be, and put the 3B behind 2B? Having the rangier fielder as the only guy on the left side seems smarter.

As it was, Colorado dunked a pop-up for a hit into short left-field, because 3B Colin Moran does not have great range, and Melky Cabrera was playing LF and he has virtually no range.

Different teams approach shifts differently, which makes it interesting.

12) Minnesota Twins hit 101 homers in their first 50 games, joining the ?99 Mariners as the only teams to homer 100+ times in their first 50 games of a season.

11) Major league baseball teams hit 59 homers in 14 games Friday, 2nd-most in a single day in baseball history, trailing only the 62 homers hit on July 2, 2002- there were 16 games played then, with a doubleheader in Boston that day.

10) Wrigley Field organist Gary Pressy worked his 2,633rd consecutive game Saturday; that means he hasn?t missed a home game since sometime in 1987- very impressive.

9) Went to an AAU tournament Saturday, first time I?ve done that in a couple years; the Gym Rat Challenge is a Memorial Day weekend tradition here in Albany? it is very well organized, spread out all over the Albany/Troy/Saratoga area.

They have three courts in the Times Union Center in downtown Albany, a 15,000-seat arena that is way too big for an event like this, but kids must enjoy playing there. Teams from all over the northeast come to the Gym Rat? good chance for kids to play against solid competition.

8) Astros 4, Red Sox 3? Boston starter David Price left this game after three batters with flu-like symptoms. Correa walked it off with a single in bottom of 9th.

7) College basketball transfer portal:
? Middle Tennessee State poaches Jalen Jordan from St Francis NY.

6) Diamondbacks 10, Giants 1? Arizona outscored San Francisco the last two days by combined score of 28-6. Going to be a rough summer for the Giants.

5) Mets 5 Tigers 4 (13)? Both teams ran out of position players, used a starting pitcher as a pinch-runner, graphic evidence that baseball is more interesting without the DH.

4) Phillies sent OF Nick Williams down to AAA earlier this week; he took the maximum amount of time to report, then played one game (went 2-5) and was given the weekend off by the Phillies to attend his girlfriend?s college graduation. I wish I was making this up.

Two years ago, Williams hit .288 with 12 homers in 83 games for the Phillies, but when the new regime took over last year, Williams? star dimmed noticeably, and with Harper/McCutchen now in the Phils? outfield, Williams is the odd man out.

I?m assuming he wants to be traded, but taking a weekend off to attend your girlfriend?s college graduation raises red flags about how much you care about playing, which makes it more difficult for you to be traded.

3) Baseball stuff:
? Angels put P Matt Harvey (back) on the IL.
? White Sox put C Welington Castillo on the 7-day concussion list.
? Pirates put P Chris Stratton on the IL.
? Astros put OF George Springer (hamstring) on IL.

2) Raptors 100, Bucks 94? Toronto advances to NBA Finals for first time, by sweeping last four games of series after losing Games 1-2 in Milwaukee.

1) Thoughts/prayers to Wisconsin assistant basketball coach Howard Moore, whose family was involved in a deadly car accident Saturday morning; coach Moore lost his wife and his daughter- he and his son are fighting for their lives. We wish them well.

LEADING OFF: Price ill, Jays slump, HR-prone Hess at Coors
May 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

AILING

Boston Red Sox left-hander David Price is on the mend after he left his start at Houston due to flu-like symptoms. Price threw 15 pitches before leaving with two out in the first inning. It was the shortest start of Price's career.

After allowing a single to Michael Brantley, manager Alex Cora rushed from the dugout to visit Price. Following a short conversation, Cora motioned to the bullpen, replacing Price with Colton Brewer.

Price was placed on the injured list on May 3 with left elbow tendinitis. He returned Monday and allowed two unearned runs in five innings against the Blue Jays.

BIG NAMES, LITTLE OFFENSE

Toronto has some Hall of Fame last names in its lineup, but the Blue Jays aren't putting up anywhere near Cooperstown numbers.

The Blue Jays got thumped 19-4 by San Diego on Saturday for their fourth straight loss. Toronto has lots of problems, and there's no doubt the offense is a major issue. The team is last in the majors with a .215 batting average.

There's hope that two young sons of Hall of Famers -Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Cavan Biggio- can help the Blue Jays break out. So far, it hasn't happened. Guerrero has flashed his talent with five home runs, but is hitting just .222. Biggio is 0 for 6 since being called up Friday.

LOOK OUT!

Baltimore's David Hess has already surrendered a major league-high 17 home runs in 45 1/3 innings this season. Now the right-hander gets a date at (gulp) Coors Field.

The Colorado Rockies' home is known for its thin air and homer-happy games. The 25-year-old Hess is 1-6 with a 6.75 ERA and he's struggled to keep opponents in the park, no matter how far it is above sea level.

Hess isn't the only Orioles pitcher giving up the longball. Baltimore had given up a whopping 111 home runs through Friday.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of the Boston Red Sox great, is in the majors.

The 28-year-old outfielder went 0 for 3 for San Francisco in his big league debut Saturday. He also scored a run after getting hit by a pitch against Arizona.

Drafted by the Orioles in 2013, he played 703 games in the minors before getting called up. He was hitting .316 with 12 home runs for Triple-A Sacramento.

His grandfather is Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski - Yaz had 3,419 career hits and won the 1967 Triple Crown.

WHY BUNT?

The Tigers are the only team in the majors without a sacrifice bunt this season. They tried in extra innings Saturday, but Josh Harrison popped out and Detroit eventually lost to the Mets 5-4 in the 13th.

Last year, the Tigers had 15 sacrifice bunts under manager Ron Gardenhire, just below the AL average of 17 per team. Detroit might get another chance when it plays under NL rules at Citi Field in the series finale.
