STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Dakota Hudson, St. Louis Cardinals (5-3, 3.47 ERA, $261):
The 24-year-old right-hander has been a model of consistency for the Cardinals, with six consecutive quality starts. Over his last five starts St. Louis is 5-0 and Hudson has posted a 1.99 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP over 31 2-3 innings.

The Cardinals are -120 favorites on the road against the New York Mets today. That said, the Mets will start Jason Vargas who has also thrown the ball well recently (five earned runs over his last 27 innings) and have played very well at home going 19-10 in their previous 29 games at Citi Field. The first five innings Under 5 is worth consideration.

SLUMPING

Martin Perez, Minnesota Twins (7-2, 3.97 ERA, $228):
Perez might sport an impressive record but that has a lot to with the team he plays for and his early-season form. His last three starts have been terrible, giving up 15 runs (12 earned) over 12 1-3 innings with a WHIP of 2.03.

He will look to get back on track today, as the Twins play against Jakob Junis (4-6, 5.35 ERA) and the Kansas City Royals. The Royals are 1-9 in their last 10 games on the road while the Twins are 10-2 in their previous 12 contests at home, so I wouldn't fade Perez and the Twins. But I would take a hard look at the Over 9 for the game total.

THREE STRIKES

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ENCARNACION DEAL

Seattle might have traded away Encarnacion but they're still the best Over bet in the majors, going 35-14-2 O/U in their last 51 games. Mike Leake (4-6 with a 4.26 ERA) will toe the rubber for Seattle today versus Oakland. Leake has been awful on the road going 1-4 with a 5.33 ERA and giving up a whopping 16 homers in 49 innings. Good news for Seattle, they might be able to hit today considering theie impressive slugging percentage of .486 on the road, while Oakland will be giving Tanner Anderson just his second career start.

Seattle is 6-2 to the Over in Leake's last eight starts on the road. The Over has also cashed in six of Oakland's last eight home games and in 11 of the previous 15 meetings between these two teams. As an added bonus, the O/U is 9-4 in umpire Dana Demuth's last 13 games behind home plate.

ITS FUN TAKING THE OVER

It's always more fun betting the Over than the Under so let's give you another strong Over play to consider: The O8 between the Pirates and Marlins. The Pirates will have struggling Chris Archer and his 5.73 ERA on the mound (a staggering 8.71 ERA on the road). The Pirates are 35-15-1 O/U in their last 51 games while the Marlins are 9-4-1 to the Over in their previous 14.

RUNNING WITH THE RUN LINE

A couple days ago we mentioned that not only do the Blue Jays lose often, they also lose big. That continues to be the case after they enter the third game of their series in Houston, fresh off a 7-2 loss. The Jays last eight losses have all been by at least four runs, and 23 of their previous 26 defeats have been by multiple runs.

With Trent Thornton (1-5, 4.78 ERA) taking the mound for the Jays today against Brad Peacock 6-3, 3.42 ERA) and the 'Stros, the Houston run line is again looking like a solid bet. The Houston -1.5 pays out at -120 while the -2.5 pays out at +135

Padres edge Rockies in another slugfest
June 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) The Padres and Rockies set a modern-era record by combining for 92 runs in a four-game series, with San Diego pitcher Matt Strahm drawing a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to rally past Colorado 14-13 Sunday.

It was just another wacky day at Coors Field, especially in this split series where the Rockies outscored the Padres 48-44 while the teams combined for 131 hits. Colorado's Charlie Blackmon became the first player since at least 1900 with 15 hits in a four-game series, according to STATS. Adding to the zaniness: the finale was delayed once to clean up a big puddle in foul territory despite sunny skies, and again later because of weather.

Trailing 13-10 in the ninth, Wil Myers had an RBI single and Greg Garcia promptly tied it with a two-out, two-run triple off closer Wade Davis (1-2). The Rockies brought in starter Jon Gray, who intentionally walked two batters to face Strahm. Gray fell behind 3-1 before throwing a strike. Taking all the way, Strahm watched a fastball narrowly miss for ball four.

Gerardo Reyes (3-0) earned the win by striking out three in the eighth. Kirby Yates threw a perfect ninth for his 24th save.

ROYALS 8, TWINS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Martin Maldonado celebrated Father's Day by wearing a blue necktie on his chest protector and had three hits to lift the Royals over the Twins.

Maldonado had several names scribbled on the tie, along with ''Happy Father's Day.'' Pittsburgh Pirates backstop Elias Diaz wore the same tie in a game against Atlanta, which appeared to be provided by equipment manufacturer All-Star.

Jorge Lopez (1-6) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief for the win.

Martin Perez (7-3) surrendered five runs - four earned - in 6 2/3 innings for Minnesota.

RED SOX 8, ORIOLES 6, 10 innings

BALTIMORE (AP) - Rafael Devers led off the 10th inning with a home run after Marco Hernandez tied it with a solo shot in ninth, and the Red Sox beat the Orioles.

After winning the first two games of the series in blowout fashion, the Red Sox used some late heroics to complete the sweep and extend their winning streak to five.

Mychal Givens (0-4) served up a 1-0 pitch that Devers slammed far over the center-field wall. Mookie Betts and Christian Vazquez added two-out, two-run singles off David Hess.

Brandon Workman (5-1) worked the ninth for the Red Sox. Boston's eighth pitcher, Josh Smith, gave up a two-run homer to Stevie Wilkerson and a bases-empty drive to Trey Mancini in the 10th.

INDIANS 8, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Trevor Bauer pitched his first shutout as a pro, ending the longest winless streak of his career as the Indians beat the Tigers.

Bauer (5-6) gave up four hits, struck out eight and walked none. This was his 224th start since being drafted out of UCLA, including 166 in the majors.

Rookie Oscar Mercado drove in four runs and Jason Kipnis homered and drove in three. The Indians are 18-7 against Detroit since the beginning of last season and outscored them 25-6 in this set at Comerica Park.

Spencer Turnbull (3-6) allowed a season-high six earned runs.

RAYS 6, ANGELS 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Yandy Diaz hit an RBI single during Tampa Bay's two-run eighth inning, and the Rays held off Los Angeles' late rally to beat the Angels.

Mike Trout hit a two-run homer off Diego Castillo in the ninth to make it a one-run game. After Shohei Ohtani singled and went to second on Albert Pujols' grounder, Castillo completed his seventh save by striking Kole Calhoun.

Tommy Pham put the Rays ahead 4-3 with a solo shot against Griffin Canning (2-3) in the fifth.

CARDINALS 4, METS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Paul DeJong tagged the Mets again, hitting a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning that sent the Cardinals over New York.

The Cardinals won despite getting outhit 10-3. They took three of four in the series, and DeJong homered in each victory.

DeJong is 30 for 83 (.361) with nine homers and 10 doubles against the Mets overall. He connected off Chris Flexen (0-3) for a solo drive.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a prodigious home run off the facade of the second deck and scored twice for St. Louis.

Andrew Miller (3-2) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the victory and Carlos Martinez went two innings for his second save.

BRAVES 15, PHILLIES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Josh Donaldson homered for the third straight game, Mike Foltynewicz allowed only one run in six innings and the Braves beat the Phillies.

The Braves, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped with a 6-5 loss to the Phillies on Saturday night, won two of three in the series. Atlanta leads Philadelphia by 2+ games in the NL East.

Mike Foltynewicz (2-5) walked five batters but allowed only four hits with six strikeouts.

Vince Velasquez (2-4) lasted 2 1/3 innings in his first start since May 6.

NATIONALS 15, DIAMONDBACKS 5

WASHINGTON (AP) - Matt Adams homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs, Anibal Sanchez got his 100th career victory, and the Nationals beat the Diamondbacks.

Adams, Anthony Rendon and Kurt Suzuki homered off Arizona reliever Zack Godley, and Adams added a grand slam against Stefan Crichton in the eighth. Adams has nine career multihomer games.

Sanchez (3-6) pitched six innings, allowing two runs and six hits while striking out three.

Archie Bradley (2-4) took the loss.

BREWERS 5, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Eric Thames and Jesus Aguilar homered to help the Brewers avoid a sweep with a victory over the Giants.

Christian Yelich had two doubles, extending his season-high hitting streak to 13 games. The reigning NL MVP is batting .472 (25 for 53) with five homers over that stretch.

Matt Albers (3-2) pitched the fifth for the win. Josh Hader pitched a perfect two final innings, striking out three, to get his 17th save in 18 chances.

Thames' homer, his 10th of the season, off Giants starter Jeff Samardzija (3-6) in the fifth gave the Brewers a 4-2 lead.

REDS 11, RANGERS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jesse Winker homered and set career highs with four hits and five RBIs, Yasiel Puig added a two-run shot, and the Reds beat the Rangers to avoid a three-game sweep.

Sonny Gray (3-5) worked around Shin-Soo Choo's solo home run and Hunter Pence's two-run shot to finish five innings in a game that was delayed at the start by 1 hour, 34 minutes.

Ariel Jurado (4-3), who won each of his previous three starts, lasted three batters into the fourth inning.

YANKEES 10, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - James Paxton pitched six effective innings, Brett Gardner and Austin Romine each had four RBIs and the Yankees cruised past the White Sox.

Gardner and Romine, the backup catcher behind Gary Sanchez, each drove in two runs with singles in New York's five-run third.

Paxton (4-3) allowed eight hits and allowed two runs for his first win since April 26.

Chicago's Odrisamer Despaigne (0-2) allowed seven runs.

PIRATES 5, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Josh Bell's go-ahead double in the seventh helped lead the Pirates over the Marlins.

The Pirates rallied from a 4-2 deficit on Corey Dickerson's pinch-hit RBI double off Miami starter Sandy Alcantara in the sixth and took the lead in the seventh against reliever Nick Anderson (2-3) on Melky Cabrera's game-tying triple and Bell's double that scored Cabrera.

Richard Rodriguez (1-3) pitched a scoreless sixth and Austin Dean closed the game for this 16th save.

BLUE JAYS 12, ASTROS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Trent Thornton shut down his former team into the seventh inning, Teoscar Hernandez hit two of Toronto's five home runs and the Blue Jays hammered the Astros.

Freddy Galvis and Hernandez each hit three-run homers in a seven-run sixth inning. Hernandez added a solo drive in the ninth off Tyler White, who started the game at first base.

Thornton (2-5) scattered six singles, struck out seven and walked three in 6 2/3 innings.

Brad Peacock (6-4) went five innings and allowed four runs for the second straight start.

MARINERS 6, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kyle Seager hit a two-run double soon after right fielder Mark Canha appeared to lose a flyball in the sun, and the Mariners rallied in the eighth inning to beat the Athletics.

Mallex Smith homered for the second time in three games for the last-place Mariners, a day after they traded AL home run leader Edwin Encarnacion to the New York Yankees.

Mike Leake (6-6) matched his season high with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Roenis Elias pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Lou Trivino (2-5) took the loss.

DODGERS 3, CUBS 2

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six most experienced offensive lines, according to Phil Steele?s magazine:

Oregon? 153 returning starts

UL-Monroe? 132

UL-Lafayette? 131

Iowa State? 114

Michigan State? 113

Marshall? 111

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??.

13) Once, just once, I want to hear a prominent pro athlete say:

?You know, I make $20 million a year; I?ll be happy no matter where I play.?

Because if you ain?t happy making an 8-figure salary, not sure what?ll do it.

12) Charlie Blackmon?s week for Colorado:
Seven games: 21-37, 14 runs, 13 RBI, three doubles, a triple and five homers. Not bad.

11) Colorado scored 44 runs in their last three games, but lost two of the three.

Sunday?s game at Coors Field was especially bizarre: San Diego scored four runs in the 9th to take the lead, the 4th run coming when pinch-hitter Schram (a pitcher) was walked with the bases loaded by Jon Gray, normally a starting pitcher.

10) San Diego?s Eric Lauer has started three games at Coors Field: Total of 8.2 IP, 24 hits, 8 walks, 20 runs (0-3, 19.73)

Might want to skip his turn next time the Padres go to Denver.

9) In his long, great career, Nolan Ryan struck out nine guys whose fathers he had previously struck out.

8) Was watching re-run of Michigan-Texas Tech game from College World Series; they were talking about this kid on Tech who would keep a journal with him in the dugout, and would write in it after each at-bat, to the point where he was ignoring the action on the field.

Finally they asked him to stop writing in the journal until after the game; was an interesting discussion about how different kids approach the game differently from a mental standpoint.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Mets put P Noah Syndergaard (hamstring) on IL.
? Orioles put OF Dwight Smith (concussion) on the IL.
? Nationals put P Kyle Barraclough (radial nerve) on the IL

6) 45% of players on major league rosters on Opening Day this year went to a 4-year college; 25% are international players.

5) Healthy advice I saw on the Interweb this week: ?Find three hobbies: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to keep you creative.?

4) Indians, Brewers, Cardinals are only teams without a grand slam this season.

3) Seattle Mariners began their salary dump, trading Edwin Encarnacion to Bronx for 19-year old pitcher Juan Then, who is 2-5, 2.67 in two seasons of Class A ball (24 starts)- he hasn?t pitched at all yet this season.

2) Braves 15, Phillies 1? Atlanta scored 78 runs in winning nine of its last ten games, their best 10-game stretch of scoring runs since 2007.

1) Writer from Atlanta suggested this Saturday night, and it makes sense; if the Cubs do put a sportsbook in Wrigley Field, shouldn?t Pete Rose finally be allowed on the Hall of Fame ballot?

Ballpark Figures - Week 13
Joe Williams

Cincinnati Kids

The Houston Astros travel to meet the Cincinnati Reds in an interleague series opener on Monday at Great American Ball Park. LHP Wade Miley takes the ball for the Astros, while Reds RHP Luis Castillo toes the slab for the home side. The Astros have managed a solid 21-13 victory on the road, while the Reds are plodding along at 16-17 in their own home park.

Houston enters play with a 6-0 mark in their past six games following a loss, and they're 9-1 in the past 10 interleague road games against teams with a losing record. They're also 9-1 in the past 10 on the road against right-handed starting pitchers, while going 20-7 in the past 27 vs. RHP. In addition, they're 21-9 in the past 30 interleague road outings against righties. The Astros have managed eight victories across Miley's past 10 starts, too, while going 4-0 in his past four against teams with a losing record. However, the Astros find themselves as road underdogs due to the presence of Castillo.

The Reds are a dismal 1-4 in the past five at home, and 1-4 in their past five at GABP vs. LHP, while going 1-7 in the past eight interleague home games. They're also 0-4 in the past four interleague games vs. LHP. However, the reason the Reds are favored is that they are 9-3 in the past 12 home outings by Castillo against teams with a winning record, 13-6 in the past 19 home starts by Castillo and 9-4 in the past 13 starts during Game 1 of a new series.

The over is 4-0-1 in the past five games by the Astros, while going 4-0 in their past four vs. RHP, too. In addition, the over is 4-1 in the past five on the road, too. However, in Miley's past five starts the under is 4-1, while going 12-3-1 in their past 16 interleague road outings. For the Reds lately, it's all under all the time. The under is 4-1 in their past five at home, 19-7 in the past 26 vs. LHP and 10-4 in their past 14 against teams with a winning percentage over .600. The under is also 15-4 across Castillo's past 19 starts, while going 13-3 in the past 16 against teams with a winning record.

Looking Ahead

Monday, June 17

The Cleveland Indians travel to Arlington to battle the Texas Rangers, and it's a pretty good pitching matchup with RHP Mike Clevinger facing RHP Lance Lynn for the home side. Cleveland has posted victories in four of their past five overall, and four of the past five on the road, too. In addition, the Indians are 6-2 in their past eight games against teams with a winning record. They're also 5-1 in the past six starts by Clevinger, but just 4-9 in his past 13 road outings and 2-8 in the past 10 against teams with a winning overall record. The Tribe are also 1-7 in the past eight starts against AL West clubs. The Rangers are 5-1 in the past six home outings by Lynn, while going 14-5 in their past 19 overall at home and 13-6 in the past 19 vs. RHP. The Indians have owned this series lately, going 5-1 in the past six trips to Texas, and 10-3 in the past 13 overall in the series.

It's a battle of southpaws in Seattle with LHP Danny Duffy going for the Royals against LHP Tommy Milone of the Mariners. The Royals have had a case of the Mondays, going 5-21 in their past 26 on the first day of the week. They're also 1-6 in the past seven road games against a team with a losing record, while winning just 16 of the past 60 road contests. Kansas City is 4-10 in their past 14 against a team with a losing record. The M's aren't much better, going 8-21 in the past 29 at home, and 15-36 in the past 51 overall. They're also 4-13 in the past 17 vs. LHP, while going 3-10 in the past 13 against AL Central foes.

Weather Report
The Phillies and Nationals have a 45 percent or greater chance of precipitation for the entire evening. Since these teams face each other frequently, a postponement wouldn't be a surprise if the weather doesn't improve. The Astros and Reds also face a possibility of light rain, tapering off from 45 percent to 30 percent by midnight. Wind won't be an issue at any of the MLB venues, however.

Tuesday, June 18

The Angels continue their series in Toronto against the Blue Jays, who have their hands full with LHP Tyler Skaggs. The Angels are 8-3 in their past 11 against the AL East entering play on Monday, and they're 4-1 in Skaggs' past five vs. AL East foes. However, they're 0-4 in his past four starts against losing teams. The Blue Jays have struggled over the past couple of seasons vs. LHP, and they're just 6-13 in the past 19 at home against southpaws while going 17-43 in the past 60 vs. LHP overall. The Jays turn to RHP Marcus Stroman to turn things around, but they're just 5-12 over his past 17 starts and 3-7 in his past 10 at home.

The Marlins and Cardinals battle in the home of the Stanley Cup champions, St. Louis. RHP Jordan Yamamoto takes the ball looks to build upon his impressive first MLB start, also against the Cards. He allowed just three hits and two walks with five strikeouts over seven scoreless innings on June 12 at Marlins Park. Miami has won just 17 of their past 62 road games, while going 5-14 in the past 19 overall vs. NL Central clubs. They're also just 1-4 in the past five against winning teams, and 2-8 in the past 10 overall. Of course, one of those is Yamamoto's victory against these same Cards. The Cardinals turn to RHP Jack Flaherty, and they're just 2-5 over his past seven against NL East teams. The Cards are 4-1 in the past five at home, however, and 5-2 in their past seven overall.

The Giants and Dodgers hook up in L.A., and San Francisco tries to hand LHP Clayton Kershaw another rare loss. The last time he faced the Giants are Oracle Park in San Francisco, Kershaw allowed two earned runs, six hits and a walk over seven innings in a 2-1 loss. That snapped an 18-start winning streak by the Dodgers when the southpaw pitches. The Dodgers are 41-10 in the past 51 home outings by Kershaw, while going 55-13 in his past 68 inside the NL West. L.A. has also rattled off victories in 39 of the past 51 games at Chavez Ravine, while going 40-13 in the past 53 at home vs. RHP. In this series, the Dodgers have won 12 of the past 17 against the Giants, and the under is 26-8-3 in the past 37 starts by Kershaw against San Francisco.wmlb

Weather Report
The Phils and Nats will face a 30 percent or greater chance of rain again on Tuesday, but there might be a window in the later innings for the two sides to get in an official game. If a day-night doubleheader is needed with a potential postponement Monday, the afternoon forecast looks pretty promising, too.

The Astros and Reds will see a 50 percent chance of showers at first pitch, tapering off to 35 percent by 10 p.m. ET. The teams might be able to get the game in, but it could be a late night with some starts and stops. The Mets and Braves also have a 35 percent or greater chance of showers at game time. Again, though, winds will not be a factor across any of the MLB parks.

Diamond Trends - Monday
June 17, 2019
By Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Athletics are 14-0 SU in the first game of a home series with no rest when they are off a game as a favorite in which they allowed six-plus runs and it is before the All-Star break.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Orioles are 0-18 SU as a 150-plus dog after a loss as a home dog in which they held the lead.

Batter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Rays are 0-7 SU off a home game in which Austin Meadows struck out at least twice and they were the favorite in all seven games.

Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Athletics are 7-0 SU in franchise history with Mike Fiers at home when they used five-plus pitchers yesterday. Oakland was the dog in four of the seven wins and Fiers has produced quality starts in each of the last six. Included among the seven wins is a 3-2 victory over Kershaw and a 1-0 win over Sale. In Fiers' last start in this spot as a member of the Tigers, Detroit beat the Red Sox 5-0.

Yanks beat Rays, Encarnacion hitless
June 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Masahiro Tanaka pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for his fourth major league shutout, and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Monday night to increase their slim lead in the AL East.

DJ LeMahieu hit a two-run homer off Yonny Chirinos, and Cameron Maybin (3 for 3) homered in his third consecutive game. That was all a dominant Tanaka (5-5) needed while throwing 76 of 111 pitches for strikes in his seventh complete game since coming over from Japan.

Edwin Encarnacion received an enthusiastic ovation in his Yankees debut. Batting fifth as the designated hitter, the veteran slugger went 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

New York moved 1+ games ahead of the second-place Rays.

Tanaka retired his first nine batters before Austin Meadows singled sharply off the right field wall to start the fourth. A two-out single in the fifth by Willy Adames was Tampa Bay's only other hit. The right-hander walked only one and set down the final 10 Rays batters, striking out six.

Chirinos (7-3) gave up five hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked one.

PADRES 2, BREWERS 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Manny Machado homered and doubled a few hours after appealing a one-game suspension handed down by MLB, and left-hander Joey Lucchesi threw seven solid innings in a combined four-hitter as San Diego beat Milwaukee.

Machado was suspended one game and fined for ''aggressively arguing and making contact'' with plate umpire Bill Welke after being ejected for arguing a called third strike at Colorado on Saturday night. Machado said he didn't make contact with Welke. He can continue to play until there's a final decision.

Machado doubled in the first and homered leading off the third.

Lucchesi (6-4) held Milwaukee to three hits while striking out five and walking three. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his MLB-leading 25th save.

The only Brewers baserunner to reach second base was Christian Yelich, who doubled with two outs in the sixth.

GIANTS 3, DODGERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Tyler Beede allowed one run over six innings to earn his first big-league victory and San Francisco defeated first-place Los Angeles in the opener of a four-game set between the NL West rivals.

Beede (1-2) scattered three hits, struck out seven and walked five on 97 pitches.

Closer Will Smith retired the side in the ninth and improved to 19 for 19 in save chances.

Giants first baseman Pablo Sandoval left the game in the fifth after baserunner Max Muncy stepped on his right hand. Sandoval's pinky finger appeared to be cut and bloodied.

Kenta Maeda (7-4) gave up two runs and three hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked two.

BRAVES 12, METS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Mike Soroka won his eighth straight decision, Ozzie Albies homered and drove in four runs, and surging Atlanta beat New York.

Nick Markakis hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the fifth inning as the NL East-leading Braves improved to 13-3 in June, best in the majors this month. Atlanta has won 10 of its last 11.

New York lost for the 12th time in 16 games away from Citi Field.

Soroka's winning streak is the longest in the majors by a pitcher under 22 since Dontrelle Willis won the same number for the 2003 Florida Marlins.

Soroka (8-1) gave up three runs, six hits and allowed just his third homer in 12 starts this year, a solo shot by Robinson Cano in the sixth. He walked one and struck out two in six innings.

Wheeler (5-5) allowed five runs - four earned - and 10 hits in six innings.

ANGELS 10, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Upton homered on the first pitch he saw in his return from the injured list, Mike Trout had a solo homer among his four hits and Los Angeles used a seven-run second inning to beat Toronto.

Shohei Ohtani and Kole Calhoun also connected in the second for the Angels, who have won all four meetings with Toronto this season.

Toronto rookie Cavan Biggio hit two home runs for the second multihomer game of his brief career. Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer, but the Blue Jays lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

Trout finished a triple shy of the cycle. He flied out in the first, doubled in the second, singled in the fourth, homered in the sixth, and singled again in the eighth.

Luis Garcia opened for the Angels and gave up Biggio's homer in the first. Felix Pena (5-1) followed and allowed four runs and six hits in six-plus innings.

REDS 3, ASTROS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Nick Senzel returned from an eye injury and drove in a pair of runs and Luis Castillo pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, leading Cincinnati over Houston.

Castillo (7-1) allowed a pair of singles and walked a career-high six batters, leaving with two on and no outs in the seventh. Shortstop Jose Peraza's throwing error let in a run, and Michael Brantley doubled home another.

Closer Raisel Iglesias escaped an eighth-inning threat when Tony Kemp grounded out with runners on second and third. Manager David Bell made an unorthodox move to finish it, yanking Iglesias and bringing in Michael Lorenzen with a runner aboard to get the last two outs and his third save.

Wade Miley walked three in the fifth inning, setting up a three-run rally. Senzel singled home two, and Eugenio Suarez's single completed the rally. The left-hander gave up four hits and a season-high four walks in 4 1/3 innings around a 52-minute delay due to storms.

CARDINALS 5, MARLINS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Dexter Fowler and Matt Carpenter homered to back a strong outing by Miles Mikolas and lead St. Louis over Miami.

Mikolas (5-7) snapped a career-high losing streak of five straight decisions. He had not won a game since May 6 against Philadelphia. Mikolas went six innings, scattering six hits and striking out four.

Giovanny Gallegos pitched the seventh followed by a five-pitch eighth inning by John Gant. Jordan Hicks pitched the ninth to preserve the shutout.

It was the 13th time the Marlins have been shut out in their 45 losses this season.

Miami's Elieser Hernandez (0-2) gave up five hits while striking out six in six innings in his second start,

St. Louis has won four of its last five games and six of its last eight. Miami has lost nine of its last 11 games.

RANGERS 7, INDIANS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Lance Lynn had another quality start, Danny Santana homered and the Texas spoiled Mike Clevinger's return from the injured list.

Lynn (8-4) struck out nine without a walk and gave up one run over seven innings.

Santana hit a two-run homer after Willie Calhoun's two-out walk in the fourth. Clevinger was done after consecutive two-out walks in the fifth, with both of those scoring to make it 5-1 when Elvis Andrus doubled on reliever Tyler Clippard's second pitch.

Clevinger (1-1) struck out seven and walked three in his first start since April 7.

Francisco Lindor and Oscar Mercado hit solo homers for Cleveland.

Santana singled in the sixth for his third consecutive multi-hit game.

RED SOX 2, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Rick Porcello pitched seven shutout innings for Boston to outduel Minnesota ace Jose Berrios.

The Red Sox stretched their winning streak to a season-high six straight games.

Porcello (5-6) allowed only four hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.

Berrios (8-3) struck out 10 batters in a season-most eight innings, with five hits and no walks allowed. An RBI single by J.D. Martinez in the first was the only run he allowed. Xander Bogaerts gave the Red Sox insurance with an RBI double in the ninth.

Ryan Brasier pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his seventh save in 10 attempts.

The Red Sox (40-34) moved a season-high six games above .500 by handing the highest-scoring team in the major leagues its second shutout of the year. The Twins (47-24) have their fifth two-game losing streak of the season. They've yet to lose three in a row.

ATHLETICS 3, ORIOLES 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mike Fiers pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning and the Oakland took advantage of Baltimore's shoddy defense.

Fiers (7-3) allowed two unearned runs over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Oakland took a 3-2 lead in the second on catcher Chance Sisco's two-run throwing error. The A's loaded the bases with no outs when Josh Phegley was hit by a pitch, Marcus Semien walked and Matt Chapman reached on an infield hit. Shortstop Jonathan Villar then fielded Matt Olson's grounder and got the force at home on Phegley, but Sisco threw wide of first trying for a double play, allowing Semien and Chapman to score.

Orioles starter Andrew Cashner (6-3) gave up three runs, one earned, in six innings of four-hit ball.

The last-place Orioles suffered their sixth straight loss.

Blake Treinen worked the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances.

Quote of the Day

?Chris (Paul) has a personality where he just doesn?t let anything go. He just keeps pestering and pestering and pestering and pestering. Sometimes James (Harden) has had enough ? and not just him. That?s what makes [Paul] a winner and also what keeps him from being a big-time winner. He?s got to temper that.?

LEADING OFF: Stanton returns to Yanks, Machado appeals ban
June 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

STANTON RETURNS

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is set to come off the injured list for a game against the Rays. Stanton has been sidelined since March 31 with biceps, shoulder and calf injuries, but seemed ready for a return during a minor league rehab start with four homers in five games. Stanton re-joins a stacked lineup that just added DH Edwin Encarnacion via trade, and star Aaron Judge is expected to return from a left oblique strain in the next few days, as well.

NO TOUCHY

Padres star Manny Machado has denied making contact with plate umpire Bill Welke after being ejected for arguing a called third strike Saturday night and said he will appeal his one-game suspension and fine. MLB said the punishment, imposed by Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre, was for ''aggressively arguing and making contact'' with Welke. Asked if he made contact, Machado said: ''Not that I believe.'' The 26-year-old Machado is batting .261 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs for the Padres after signing a $300 million, 10-year contract in spring training.

TEAM ZACH

A special ballpark tour is happening along the West Coast, where Zach Sprader's family is trying to visit all 30 big league ballparks in his memory. Zach died of leukemia in 2015 at 14 years old, about a year after befriending veteran catcher Nick Hundley at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Hundley has remained close with the family since his death. He's helping them along their big league tour and got tickets for their visit to the Oakland Coliseum on Monday, where they saw the Orioles face the A's to check off park No. 13. Next stop: Petco Park in San Diego, and then Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

FIRST TIMER

The Padres are set to debut yet another top pitching prospect, this time sending Logan Allen out against Milwaukee for his first big league start. The 22-year-old was acquired in a deal that sent Craig Kimbrel to Boston in 2015, and he's since emerged as one of baseball's best left-handed pitching prospects. San Diego has already gotten strong contributions from youngsters Chris Paddack, Eric Lauer, Joey Lucchesi and Nick Margevicius this year - a group of starters all 26 or younger.
