STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Zach Eflin, Philadelphia Phillies (6-7, 2.83 ERA, $-243 ): The Phillies are just 1-5 in Eflin's last six starts, but the blame for that doesn't fall on the 25-year-old pitcher's shoulders. Eflin has been on a roll since April 28, recording a 2.25 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in nine starts. He's been excellent at home all season, going 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA and BAA of .216.

Today, Eflin and the Phillies host the New York Mets who are 8-22 in their last 30 away games. The Mets will give the ball to Steven Matz who has struggled on the road, going 2-5 with a 6.21 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. Philadelphia has solid value at -124 for this one.

SLUMPING

Aaron Sanchez, Toronto Blue Jays (3-9, 5.49 ERA, $-526):
It's crazy to think that at one point this season Sanchez was 3-1 with a 2.32 ERA. Eight consecutive losses later and Sanchez is back near the bottom of pitcher rankings. He's been particularly awful in June, going 0-4 with an ERA of 11.09 and WHIP of 2.14. Sanchez and the Blue Jays are +220 underdogs in New York versus the Yankees.

The Yankees will start CC Sabathia who is 3-1 with a 2.18 ERA and .207 BAA at home. The Jays have lost by at least four runs in each of Sanchez's past five starts, while the Yankees have won by at least four runs in four out of Sabathia's last six starts at home. Taking New York at -1.5 pays out at -130, while the alternate run line of -2.5 is listed at +120 on BetAmerica.

3 STRIKES

BACK TO REALITY

That's more like the Drew Pomeranz we've come to know and love! After recording back to back five-inning shutouts against the Dodgers and Brewers, Pomeranz was back to his unreliable self last Wednesday, getting rocked for seven runs in a rematch with the Dodgers. The lefty now has a 2-7 record with a 7.09 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and BAA of .308, and will face the Rockies in San Francisco tonight.

The Rockies will start Jon Gray and his 4.18 ERA, and are small favorites at -112. Even with the Rockies batting poorly on the road (with a BA of .229) and the Giants hitting terribly everywhere (.224 BA), the O/U of 7.5 seems too low.

STEADY FREDDY

Braves star Freddy Freeman is red-hot, batting .369 and driving in 18 runs over his last 11 games, but truth be told he's always ultra-productive. On the season he has a BA of .316 with 21 homers and 61 RBI, and those numbers are even better on the road where he hits .347.

Today, Freeman and the Braves head to Chicago to take on the Cubs and pitcher Jon Lester. Lester has struggled recently with an ERA of 7.02 and seven home runs allowed over his last three starts. Freeman has +220 odds to crank a homer today.

NO RUN SUPPORT

Kansas City hurler Brad Keller's 4.45 ERA and .243 BAA is fairly comparable to Cleveland starter Adam Plutko's 4.55 ERA and .252 BAA. However, Keller's teammates have been far less helpful than Plutko's going into today's matchup between the two pitchers.

The Royals have averaged just 1.2 runs per game over Keller's last 5 starts and are just 1-10 over his last 11 starts. While Cleveland is 6-1 in Plutko's previous seven starts while averaging 10.33 runs per game over his last three. Kansas City is just 11-26 on the road and are +150 underdogs for this game.

Yanks homer in record-tying 27th straight game, beat Toronto
June 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Aaron Hicks and Giancarlo Stanton stretched the Yankees' home run streak to a record-tying 27 games, and New York beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-8 Monday night.

Hicks and Stanton each hit three-run drives, and New York matched the mark set by Alex Rodriguez and the 2002 Texas Rangers.

CC Sabathia (5-4) pitched six innings of two-run ball. He threw 104 pitches and struck out a season-high nine.

Stanton hit his shot during a seven-run sixth inning for his first homer in a season spoiled by various injuries.

Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez (3-10) allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. Toronto had won three of four.

Freddy Galvis hit a grand slam and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his 10th homer for Toronto.

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman allowed an unearned run during the ninth but got his 22nd save.

CUBS 8, BRAVES 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Willson Contreras homered and had three RBIs, Jon Lester pitched five-hit ball through six innings and Chicago beat Atlanta in a chippy matchup of NL division leaders.

Jason Heyward added a solo homer for Chicago, which moved one game ahead of Milwaukee in the NL Central. Lester (7-5) allowed two unearned runs and struck out seven.

The Cubs strung together five straight hits in a five-run fifth inning to break the game open. Kyle Schwarber doubled into the ivy to score Carlos Gonzalez. Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez and Contreras followed with RBIs.

Tempers flared in the second when Contreras homered. He turned to Braves catcher Tyler Flowers after the ball left his bat, and while rounding first base, gestured toward Atlanta's dugout and thumped his chest. The benches cleared, but no blows were exchanged.

Teheran (5-6) was roughed up for the second straight start.

PHILLIES 13, METS 7

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Maikel Franco hit a go-ahead two-run homer, Rhys Hoskins, Jean Segura and Jay Bruce also went deep and Philadelphia snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Zach Eflin (7-7) struggled through five innings, allowing six runs and 11 hits. The Phillies had lost 16 of 22 since May 29.

Todd Frazier, Wilson Ramos, Michael Conforto and Dominic Smith hit solo homers for the Mets.

Steven Matz (5-6) got roughed up. The lefty gave up seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Philadelphia went ahead on Franco's 10th homer in the fifth, a two-run shot to center. Bruce's second career pinch-hit homer was a two-run shot. Bryce Harper, back in the No. 3 spot in the lineup after leading off for a few games, had a pair of RBI doubles. Franco was 3 for 4 with three RBIs. The Phillies had a season-high 19 hits.

RED SOX 6, WHITE SOX 5

BOSTON (AP) - Marco Hernandez beat out an infield single with the bases loaded in the ninth and Boston rallied to beat Chicago.

It was the second straight walk-off victory at home for Boston, which has won nine of 12.

Brandon Workman (7-1) got one out in the eighth, to pick up the victory. Jace Fry (1-3) took the loss for Chicago, which has lost six out of eight.

Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up five runs off six hits, including two home runs over 6 1/3 innings.

Chicago's Lucas Giolito allowed three runs off six hits, struck out seven and walked four over 5 2/3 innings.

Yoan Moncada had a two-run home run and Jose Abreu added a two-out, solo home run for the White Sox.

DIAMONDBACKS 8, DODGERS 5

PHOENIX (AP) - David Peralta hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning, and Arizona rallied for the win over NL West-leading Los Angeles.

Former Dodger Tim Locastro put the game out of reach with a two-run double off losing pitcher Dylan Floro (2-2), part of a four-run outburst in the eighth for the Diamondbacks. Christian Walker and starting pitcher Zack Greinke homered, Ketel Marte had two hits for his seventh consecutive multi-hit game and the Diamondbacks ended the Dodgers' winning streak at six games.

Yoan Lopez (1-1) worked a scoreless inning and earned the win.

Max Muncy drove in three runs for the Dodgers.

Greg Holland got one out in the ninth for his 200th career save.

INDIANS 3, ROYALS 2, 10 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis homered leading off the 10th inning as Cleveland continued its impressive June with a win over Kansas City in a game delayed 2 hours, 23 minutes by rain.

Kipnis connected on a 1-0 pitch from Wily Peralta (2-4) for his sixth homer.

The Indians have won 14 of 19 and improved to an AL-best 15-6 this month.

Brad Hand (4-2) worked a perfect 10th as Indians manager Terry Francona was forced to use six pitchers because of the weather.

Whit Merrifield homered for the Royals, who sit at the bottom of the AL Central.

Indians starter Adam Plutko didn't give up a hit until the fourth, when Merrifield led off with his 11th homer.

ROCKIES 2, GIANTS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - David Dahl hit a two-run homer in the third that held up for Jon Gray, and Colorado snapped a three-game skid by beating San Francisco.

Gray (8-5) struck out six in six innings, allowing four hits and walking two for Colorado. The Rockies were coming off three straight walkoff defeats to the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Giants starter Drew Pomeranz (2-8) matched his career high with 11 strikeouts over five innings but left trailing 2-0.

The 11 Ks were the most by a Giants pitcher throwing five or fewer innings since the mound distance was established in 1893, according to Elias.

Wade Davis finished the six-hitter for his 10th save in 12 opportunities.

The Giants, who had won six straight series openers, lost for the fifth time in seven games. Colorado won for just the second time in five games at San Francisco, which was shut out for the ninth time.

LEADING OFF: Yanks try for HR record, Braves-Cubs cool off
June 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

HOMER HAPPY

Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Edwin Encarnacion and the New York Yankees try to set the major league record for most consecutive games with a home run.

The Yankees homered in their 27th straight game Monday night, matching the mark set by Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro and the 2002 Texas Rangers.

Next up, Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres and their New York teammates take on Toronto lefty Clayton Richard (0-3, 7.46 ERA) at Yankee Stadium. Richard has allowed five homers in 25 1/3 innings this season.

SAY WHAT?

Catchers Willson Contreras and Tyler Flowers aim to keep cool, a day after things got testy between them at Wrigley Field, prompting the Cubs and Braves to clear the benches.

Contreras homered for Chicago in the second inning Monday night, turned around to look at Flowers and then thumped his chest rounding first. Contreras shouted at Flowers after crossing the plate, and the dugouts emptied. Cubs manager Joe Maddon and Flowers calmly spoke as things simmered down.

CLOSING TIME

The Cardinals need to rework their bullpen after closer Jordan Hicks was diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament. The team says it's determining what to do with the hardest-throwing pitcher in the majors - his injury usually leads to Tommy John surgery.

The rocket-armed Hicks has hit 105 mph with fastballs this season and routinely reaches triple digits with his heater. The 22-year-old is 2-2 with 14 saves and a 3.14 ERA in 29 games.

ALMOST READY

The Cubs says newly signed closer Craig Kimbrel could be activated later this week. He's set to pitch again for Triple-A Iowa, and the team will then make a decision on what direction to go with him.

Kimbrel signed a three-year, $43 million contract on June 7. The All-Star righty has pitched three times in the minors, preparing to join Chicago.

BOUNCE BACK

Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner is coming off his shortest outing of 2019, looking to rebound when he starts at home against the Rockies. Bumgarner (3-7, 4.28) allowed a season-high six runs and 10 hits in 3 2-3 innings Thursday at Dodger Stadium.

Colorado right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez comes up from Triple-A Albuquerque to make his first major league start since 2016 with Texas.

Hot & Not Report
June 24, 2019
By YouWager.eu

Who's Hot and Who's Not

Week of June 24th

About a month ago I gave out a brief early season look on all the umpires in MLB that were good to back with totals in some fashion. The Top 'over' umpires at the time was an extensive list of guys who at the time had just gone by the 10-game marker in terms of number of times behind the plate, while umps who favored the 'under' more often were listed as well.

We've since had another four full weeks of action which means that most umpires worth tracking are around the 15-game mark behind the dish now, and while some of the names from both lists have stayed the same, there are also plenty of changes as well. So it what may become a monthly thing the rest of the year, let's take a look back at some of the best 'over' and 'under' umpires currently in the game.

Odds per - YouWager.eu

Who's Hot - 70% or better to the 'Over' Umpires

Alan Porter (12-2 O/U)
Mike Winters (10-3 O/U)
Jeff Kellogg (10-3 O/U)
Chad Whitson (10-4 O/U)
Carlos Torres (10-4 O/U)
Tom Hallion (7-3 O/U)

As you can see in comparison from a month ago, there are a few names missing from that initial list here as things can regress back to the mean over time with these guys. Winters, Whitson, and Kellogg are the three remaining holdovers, while Porter and Hallion and Torres are the newcomers, largely thanks to them reaching 10+ games now.

In Porter's case, he's jumped to the top of the list (85.7%) thanks to a run of going 5-0 O/U in his five games since last month's piece was written, and all five of those games finished with at least 10 runs. The 12.4 runs per game Porter sees behind the dish is third highest in the league behind Winters (13.4), and Brian Gorman (13.9) who still has some games to do before his trends can really be taken seriously. That high of an average run per game number will earn 'over' bettors plenty of units, and with the Porter/Winters combo being up 16.6 units to the 'over' this year, they are two names that are cause for pause for 'under' bettors.

Of the new names on the list, Torres and Hallion are names to keep an eye on for assignments, especially if they are doing National League games, as combined they are 9-0 O/U on the senior circuit this year. Hallion has seen an average of 12.3 runs per game in contests featuring two NL teams, while Torres clocks in at 13.4 runs/game in the same scenario. Those numbers could be nothing more than randomness when it's all said and done, but if you are looking for some regression to the mean from these guys, chances are you'll want to see them involved with AL teams ? 4-7-1 O/U combined ? at least.

Odds per - YouWager.eu

Who's Not - 70% or better to the 'Under' umpires

Andy Fletcher (2-9-1 O/U)
Joe West (3-11 O/U)
Rob Drake (3-10 O/U)
Jerry Meals (4-11-1 O/U)

Whether it's because of all the HR balls or not this year, the 'under' list of umpires has grown significantly shorter in a month, with only West and Meals the holdovers here. Last month's leader in the clubhouse ? Ed Hickox has seen nothing but 'overs' since being mentioned here, as his games are 5-0 O/U since that time with three of the four of them finishing with at least 11 runs. That's a great example of how these guys can regress to the mean over time, and how some savvy bettors may want to take all the names on each list this week and simply go the other way in their next outings. After all, another name gone from this list ? Mike Everitt ? went a perfect 4-0-1 O/U since last month's post as well.

Regarding the two holdovers, West has become an 'under' umpire in recent years overall, as his expanding zone gets plenty of strikeouts for both sides this year, and having a 66-year old guy behind the dish calling balls and strikes will come with some inconsistencies.

Meals hasn't reached his 60's yet, but he's morphed into a great 'under' guy in recent years as well. He was a great guy to back with 'overs' early on his career, but with a 32-46-3 O/U record over the past two years ? 11-25-2 in American League games ? Meals is another guy who has seemingly expanded his strike zone as the years have gone on. There isn't lost hope of Meals or West seeing a few more 'overs' soon given that they were favorable to that side at one point in their careers, but recent trends suggest that these guys will continue to be favorable to pitchers with those expanding and shifting strike zones.

Tuesday's Diamond Notes
Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Indians (9-2 last 11)

Cleveland has owned the AL Central the last three seasons by the Indians are currently looking up at the surprising Twins. However, the Indians have responded well in late June by winning four of six series, including home series victories over New York and Minnesota. The Tribe cruised past the Tigers this past weekend for their second sweep of Detroit this month, while edging the Royals in 10 innings last night on Jason Kipnis? walk-off homer following a lengthy rain delay.

Shane Bieber allowed two early runs in his last start at Texas in a 4-2 defeat in spite of striking out eight batters in six innings. The Indians have won six of Bieber?s eight starts at Progressive Field this season, but the right-hander was knocked around by the Yankees in his most recent home outing by giving up five runs in less than two innings of work. Bieber has not faced Kansas City this season, as he seeks his 13th UNDER in 16 starts.

Coldest team: White Sox (2-6 last eight)

Since beating the Yankees twice at home in mid-June, Chicago has gone backwards by allowing six runs or more in each of its past six losses. The White Sox dropped the final two games at Texas this past weekend before squandering a 5-3 lead in Monday?s 6-5 walk-off defeat at Boston. Chicago had its three-game winning streak in series openers snapped, while the Sox have lost two straight starts made by Lucas Giolito since winning his previous nine outings.

It will be another tough test for the White Sox tonight at Fenway Park as Chicago tries to improve on a 1-4 record against Boston this season. A pair of former Vanderbilt standouts take the mound tonight as David Price squares off with Carson Fulmer. The Chicago right-hander makes his first start of the season trying to improve on a 6.35 ERA in 10 relief appearances.

Hottest pitcher: Max Scherzer, Nationals (6-5, 2.62 ERA)

The last time Scherzer faced the Marlins at home on Memorial Day, the Nationals lost, 3-2 as a nearly -300 favorite. The three-time Cy Young winner has put together a perfect June by going 4-0 in four starts, while racking up 44 strikeouts in this span. Scherzer overcame a broken nose from a freak batting practice accident in his last start to toss seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 home victory over Philadelphia. The Nationals have won three of Scherzer?s last four road starts, as he looks to beat Miami for the first time in three outings this season.

Coldest pitcher: Zach Davies, Brewers (7-1, 3.06 ERA)

This category wouldn?t normally be reserved for a pitcher with this record, but Davies has cooled off since a 7-0 start. Davies suffered his first loss of the season in a 5-3 setback at San Francisco on June 14, while allowing five runs in less than three innings in an 8-7 defeat at San Diego, although he picked up a no-decision last Thursday. Six of Davies? last eight starts have come away from Miller Park, as the Brewers own a 5-1 record in his six home outings this season. The Brewers welcome in the woeful Mariners for an interleague set, as Seattle makes its first visit to Milwaukee since 2010.

Biggest OVER run: Orioles (8-2-1 last 11)

Baltimore returns home from a dreadful 1-6 west coast swing at Oakland and Seattle, while allowing double-digit runs three times. The O?s scored more than three runs only twice in the seven-game trip, while putting up over three runs three times in the past 11 contests overall. Baltimore owns a 4-1 mark to the UNDER in the last five series openers as the O?s welcome in the suddenly slumping Padres, who were swept by the Pirates this past weekend.

Biggest UNDER run: Twins (5-2 last seven)

Minnesota?s offense has been inconsistent of late by scoring four runs or fewer in five of the past seven contests. The Twins posted 13 runs in their two wins at Kansas City this past weekend, but was held to one run in each of the two losses. Minnesota hasn?t started the last three series well by scoring a total of three runs, while losing to Boston and Kansas City in the past two series openers. The Twins welcome in the Rays for a three-game series as Kyle Gibson has been up and down of late. Gibson allowed five and six runs in two of his past three outings, with a scoreless effort against Kansas City sandwiched in between. The last time Gibson faced the Rays at Tropicana Field on June 1, the right-hander yielded one run in five innings of a 6-2 win that pushed the total of 8.

Matchup to watch: Athletics vs. Cardinals

Both these third-place squads from their respective divisions start up a quick two-game interleague set at Busch Stadium, as St. Louis will visit Oakland in early August. The A?s split a four-game series with the Rays to conclude their 10-game homestand at 6-4, while the Cardinals couldn?t pull off the sweep of the Angels following Sunday?s 6-4 home defeat. In spite of the loss, St. Louis has not dropped a series at Busch since late May against Atlanta.

Jack Flaherty seeks his fifth win of the season for the Cardinals tonight as the right-hander lost as a hefty -260 home favorite against the Marlins his previous outing. Flaherty delivered a quality start by tossing seven innings and allowing three runs, but the Cardinals were blanked by Miami, 6-0, marking the third time St. Louis has lost in his past four outings at Busch Stadium. The Redbirds enter tonight?s action by cashing the UNDER in five consecutive home series openers, while yielding one run or fewer three times in the last four home Game 1?s.

Chris Bassitt counters for Oakland, as the righty has pitched into the sixth inning in all four June starts. The A?s lost his first three outings this month before finally breaking through against Baltimore last Wednesday in an 8-3 triumph as a -285 favorite. Bassitt is listed as a road underdog for only the second time this season as he picked up a no-decision in a 5-3 win at Cleveland in late May.

Betcha didn?t know:
Reds? right-hander Tyler Mahle has been a solid pitcher to back at home this season as Cincinnati is 4-1 in his five outings at Great American Ballpark. However, the Reds have failed to win with Mahle starting on the highway this season in nine tries as he takes the mound tonight against the Angels in Anaheim. Mahle does return home tonight as he grew up in Westminster, California, which is in northern Orange County.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Marco Gonzales, Seattle Mariners (8-6, 4.38 ERA, $243):
It?s a bit of a sorry day for streakers, considering we?ve already highlighted Scherzer. That said, good for Marco. He has bounced back from a terrible stretch by pitching to a 2.33 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over his last three starts. He?ll look to keep it going tonight, but will be in tough against a solid Brewers lineup. The Mariners are currently +155 road dogs with a total of 10.5.

SLUMPING

Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (4-6, 4.40 ERA, $737):
This one seems so weird. Snell just hasn?t looked like the guy who captured the AL Cy Young, so far this season. He is coming off one of the worsts starts of his career, allowing six runs on two hits and four walks in just 0.1 innings of work at Yankee Stadium.

Over his last four starts, Snell has an unthinkably high 10.29 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP. Snell will try to bounce back tonight, but will have to do so on the road, against one of baseball best offenses in the Twins. Tonight?s game is essentially a Pick?em with a total of 9.5.

3 STRIKES

TWIN CITY SHUFFLE

The Minnesota Twins open a brief three-game home stand with the Tampa Bay Ray Tuesday, which means Under bettors are licking their chops. The Twins have one of the strangest Over/Under splits in the major leagues, posting a 24-13-1 O/U mark on the road but a 15-20-2 clip at home. Minnesota?s offensive production drops from 6.35 runs per contest on the road to 5.03 inside Target Field.

And, with the club recently running against that road Over trend ? going 1-3 O/U at Kanas City last week ? the total for the series opener with the Rays is ticking down. Books opened Game 1 with a 9.5-run number but that?s been bet down to nine runs as of Tuesday morning. Starter Kyle Gibson, who gets the nod versus Blake Snell, has performed much better at home with a 3.62 ERA and 2-4 Over/Under count in his six starts at Target Field this season.

OVER DRIVE

Could it be lineups getting more intel on pitchers or perhaps the summer heat injecting balls with a little life? Whatever the cause, MLB Overs have been the hot play the past week. Heading into Tuesday?s slate, MLB games have gone 51-39-4 Over/Under since June 18 ? a near 57 percent winning clip for fans of high-scoring baseball. For the month, Overs are paying out at almost 54 percent.

The biggest culprits pushing this Over trend: the Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves. The M?s enter Tuesday with a 17-4-1 Over/Under count in June while the Braves boast a 16-6 O/U record this month, but have played Under in four of their last five outings facing totals between 9.5 and 12 runs. Atlanta has an 11.5-run total set for today?s trip to Wrigley while Seattle is pegged with a 10-run number at Milwaukee.

RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT

The Cincinnati Reds are the major-league equivalent to WWE wresting legend, the Ultimate Warrior, who was notorious for his energy-packed entrances which would often leave him gassed for the match itself.

The Reds have a tendency to start with Warrior-like frenzy, sitting tied for tops in the bigs in runs scored in the first inning ? averaging 0.83 in the opening frame. During its recent four-game road trip to Milwaukee, Cincinnati plated nine total first-inning runs. However, that production falls off a cliff for the remainder of the game, with the Red averaging only 4.39 runs per game on the season.

Tuesday?s foe, the L.A. Angels have one of the best first-inning defenses in the majors. The Halos give up only 0.42 runs in the first inning of games (second lowest) and starter Andrew Heaney hasn?t allowed a single run in the opening inning through his five starts in 2019, striking out six and limiting opposing hitters to a .118 BA in that window. The ?No Runs Scored? prop for the first inning is priced at -105.

Yankees hit 4 homers to extend streak, beat Blue Jays 4-3
June 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge hit back-to-back homers to begin the bottom of the first inning, giving the Yankees a major league-record 28 straight games with a long ball, and New York held off the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 Tuesday night.

Gleyber Torres and Edwin Encarnacion each poked a solo shot over the short right field porch for the Yankees, who shook off another injury to Giancarlo Stanton and won for the 10th time in 11 games. The AL East leaders are 8-1 on a 10-game homestand that wraps up Wednesday.

Aroldis Chapman allowed a run in the ninth before retiring Freddy Galvis on an easy grounder with two aboard for his 23rd save in 25 tries.

Stanton exited in the fourth with a bruised right knee and was scheduled for an MRI. He got tangled up with Toronto pitcher Clayton Richard (0-4) in the first while getting thrown out on a headfirst slide into third base.

Yankees rookie Nestor Cortes Jr. (3-0) pitched 4 1/3 solid innings in relief of opener Chad Green.

RED SOX 6, WHITE SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer and David Price struck out nine, leading the Red Sox to the victory.

The start of the game was delayed 24 minutes because of rain, which continued to fall - heavily at times - through the first five innings. The slick conditions may have contributed to a frightening moment in the fifth inning when Chicago shortstop Tim Anderson sprained his right ankle on a fielding play. Anderson was carried off the field on the shoulders of manager Rick Renteria and a trainer.

Price (5-2) worked through the conditions for six innings, permitting three runs and eight hits. Brandon Workman pitched the ninth for his third save.

Jose Ruiz (0-1) took the loss after allowing Bogaerts' two-run shot in the fifth, breaking a 3-all tie.

PHILLIES 7, METS 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Maikel Franco hit a go-ahead two-run homer for the second straight game, powering the Phillies to the victory.

Brad Miller, Scott Kingery and Rhys Hoskins also connected as Philadelphia earned its second straight win since losing seven in a row.

Franco hit a shot to right off Wilmer Font (1-2) for his 18th homer, lifting the Phillies to a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning. Miller made it back-to-back shots when he went deep for a pinch-hit homer.

Philadelphia right-hander Jake Arrieta (7-6) permitted five runs and nine hits in six innings. Hector Neris got four outs for his 16th save.

Jeff McNeil had four hits for New York. Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith homered.

NATIONALS 6, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out 10 in eight innings and won his fifth straight start to lead Washington.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner also had two hits and scored twice.

Scherzer (7-5) is 5-0 with a 0.92 ERA over his last seven starts and has fanned exactly 10 in three straight games. He allowed five hits and one run while throwing 71 of 94 pitches for strikes.

Trea Turner hit a three-run homer and Juan Soto knocked in two runs for the Nationals, who have won six of eight.

Miami had its four-game winning streak end, and manager Don Mattingly and shortstop Miguel Rojas were ejected in the eighth by plate umpire Mike Estabrook for arguing. Rojas struck out earlier in the inning.

Trevor Richards (3-8) allowed a season-high six runs in five innings.

PADRES 8, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Manny Machado marked his return to Camden Yards with a performance reminiscent of his time with the Orioles, hitting a long homer and driving in two runs to lead San Diego.

Machado played seven years with the Orioles before being traded last July, months before becoming a free agent. The third baseman signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres in February.

Machado received a standing ovation from many in the crowd of 21,644 before striking out in the first inning. In the third, however, he hit a shot off Jimmy Yacabonis (1-2) that traveled an estimated 455 feet and added a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Manuel Margot homered and drove in three runs, and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Francisco Mejia also went deep for the Padres.

Rookie Logan Allen (2-0) allowed two runs and eight hits over six innings.

Richie Martin homered and Hanser Alberto matched his career high with four hits for the Orioles, who lost for the 12th time in 13 games.

BRAVES 3, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr. homered, Max Fried pitched six innings of two-hit ball and Atlanta beat Chicago.

Acuna crushed the first pitch of the game from Cubs rookie Adbert Alzolay into the left-field bleachers for his 19th homer of the season. Albies hit a towering two-run shot to right center off Mike Montgomery (1-2) in the seventh that gave Atlanta the lead.

Fried (9-3) struck out eight, walked a season-high five and allowed two runs in winning his second straight start.

Relievers Sean Newcomb, Anthony Swarzak and Luke Jackson, who threw a perfect ninth for his 12th save, combined to complete the four-hitter.

Willson Contreras had two RBIs and fellow Venezuelan Alzolay tossed one-hit, one-run ball through 4 2/3 innings in his first major league start.

ROYALS 8, INDIANS 6

CLEVELAND (AP) - Hunter Dozier's grand slam capped Kansas City's stunning five-run rally in the ninth inning off Cleveland closer Brad Hand.

Hand (4-3) was a perfect 22 for 22 in save chances. But the left-hander did not record an out against the Royals, who entered the ninth down 6-3 before storming back.

Nicky Lopez had an RBI infield single before Kansas City loaded the bases and Dozier connected on Hand's first pitch for his first career grand slam and 13th homer.

Kevin McCarthy (2-1) pitched the eighth and stumbled into a win, and Ian Kennedy worked the ninth for his 10th save.

Tyler Naquin hit a two-run homer and Carlos Santana, Roberto Perez and Mike Freeman had solo shots for the Indians.

RANGERS 5, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Jesse Chavez pitched into the seventh inning in his longest outing in over two years, and Texas beat Detroit.

Detroit has lost 18 of its last 20 home games, and that does not include a game last month that was suspended with the Tigers trailing.

Chavez (3-2) allowed an unearned run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven with no walks. It was his longest outing since he went seven innings on June 16, 2017.

Ronald Guzman homered for Texas, and Ronny Rodriguez went deep in the ninth inning for Detroit.

Jordan Zimmermann (0-5) allowed three runs in five innings. Detroit has lost five straight and nine of 10.

The Rangers were without Asdrubal Cabrera, who was starting a three-game suspension for hitting an umpire with equipment.

ASTROS 5, PIRATES 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Yuli Gurriel and Alex Bregman homered to back up a solid start by Gerrit Cole in his first meeting against his former team, and Houston beat Pittsburgh.

Cole (7-5) yielded seven hits and one run in six innings against the team which drafted him first overall in 2011 and where he spent five seasons before a trade to Houston before last season. Cole struck out three and walked two as he won his third straight decision.

Bregman got things going in the fourth with a double off Trevor Williams before Gurriel launched a fastball into the seats in left field with two outs in the inning to make it 2-0.

An RBI single by Melky Cabrera got the Pirates within 1 in the sixth before Bregman opened the bottom of the inning with his 22nd home run to make it 3-1.

Williams (2-2) allowed eight hits and four runs in 6 2/3 innings.

TWINS 9, RAYS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eddie Rosario had four hits, Willians Astudillo added three hits and Minnesota extended Blake Snell's troubles.

Jonathan Schoop and C.J. Cron hit solo homers for Minnesota, which got to Snell (4-7) for seven runs and 11 hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

Kyle Gibson (8-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings as the Twins won for the third time in four games.

The Twins scored three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to chase Snell, with Rosario tallying an RBI single in each.

LEADING OFF: Ohtani works off mound, Keuchel makes 2nd start
June 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

GETTIN' LOOSE

Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani will throw off a mound for the first time since Tommy John surgery.

Ohtani had surgery Oct. 1 at the conclusion of his AL Rookie of the Year season. He returned to the Los Angeles lineup as a designated hitter May 7, posting nine homers and 30 RBIs already this season with an .834 OPS.

The Angels repeatedly have said Ohtani won't pitch in games until 2020, but his recovery appears to be progressing well.

Ohtani went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 10 starts as a rookie. He also hit 22 homers and drove in 61 runs with a .925 OPS.

STEP IT UP

Dallas Keuchel makes his second start since signing a one-year, $13 million contract with Atlanta earlier this month. The former AL Cy Young Award winner lost in his Braves debut, laboring through five innings in a loss at Washington.

Keuchel will face Yu Darvish (2-3, 4.75) in Chicago. Darvish has no-decisions in his last 10 starts and has yet to win at Wrigley Field as a Cub.

CHECK HIM

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton will see how he's feeling, a day after bruising his right knee when he got tangled up with Toronto pitcher Clayton Richard while getting thrown out on a headfirst slide into third base.

The 2017 NL MVP just returned last Tuesday from injuries to his biceps, shoulder and calf that had sidelined him since March 31.

ROYAL RETURN

Kansas City left-hander Eric Skoglund's rejoins the roster after the end of his 80-game suspension for testing positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs.

Skoglund was in the mix to make the Royals' rotation before the penalty. He's made three minor league rehab starts, and reports to the club in Cleveland.

REPEAT AFTER ME

Miami rookie Zac Gallen faces Trea Turner, Juan Soto and the Nationals at Marlins Park.

The 23-year-old righty made his major league debut last week and pitched five impressive innings at St. Louis, allowing one earned run and five hits while striking out six.
