'Savages' again: Yankees erupt at umpires, beat Indians 6-5
August 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Manager Aaron Boone, Brett Gardner and the New York Yankees again hammered away at the umpires, this time in prolonged rants that brought several members of the team spilling onto the field, while beating the Cleveland Indians 6-5 Saturday.

Gleyber Torres hit two home runs and Didi Gregorius and DJ LeMahieu also connected for the AL East-leading Yankees.

But what really fired up the crowd of 47,347 at Yankee Stadium occurred in the sixth inning after Cameron Maybin was called out on strikes by Triple-A ump Ben May.

For the third time in a month - each time with a minor league call-up umpire behind the plate - the team with the best record in American League lost its temper in a big way. This episode led to Boone, Gardner and pitcher CC Sabathia being ejected.

James Paxton (9-6) went five innings for the win. Zach Plesac (6-4) was chased in the fifth.

Aroldis Chapman closed for his 35th save in 40 chances.

CUBS 2, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kris Bryant homered in the seventh inning, and Chicago got out of three bases-loaded jams to snap a four-game skid and beat Pittsburgh.

After committing an error at third base each of the previous two innings, Bryant drove the first pitch of the seventh from Steven Brault (3-2) into the left-field bleachers to put Chicago ahead 1-0. It was Bryant's 25th homer this season and third in five games.

Jon Lester (10-8) gave up four hits and five walks in six innings, getting out of two bases-loaded jams unscathed.

Rowan Wick retired each of the three batters he faced for his first major league save.

REDS 6, CARDINALS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Aristides Aquino hit a three-run homer, Nick Senzel added a leadoff shot and Cincinnati dropped St. Louis back into a tie with Chicago for first place in the NL Central.

Aquino's blast off Miles Mikolas (7-13) gave the Reds a 5-1 lead in the fifth. It was the rookie's 11th homer in his 17th career game.

Anthony DeSclafani (8-7) worked five innings, allowing Matt Carpenter's second-inning homer.

RAYS 1, TIGERS 0, 13 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Mike Brosseau's pinch-hit RBI single in the 13th inning drove in Eric Sogard and gave Tampa Bay the win over Detroit.

Sogard doubled off Matt Hall (0-1) with two outs and Tommy Pham was intentionally walked. Brosseau singled to right-center field for the Rays' first run since Wednesday, ending a streak of 29 scoreless innings.

Rays pitchers struck out a franchise-record 24 batters, including 13 in 20 hitless at bats against relievers. Poche (3-4) got the win after striking out two of the three Tigers he faced in the 13th.

METS 4, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jacob deGrom pitched seven sharp innings and Pete Alonso put New York ahead with a two-run single in its win over Kansas City.

Alonso got three hits and snapped a 1-all tie with two outs in the seventh when he rolled a bases-loaded grounder up the middle. Juan Lagares, who also had three hits, added an RBI triple in the eighth.

Last year's NL Cy Young Award winner, deGrom (8-7) gave up one run and three hits while striking out five.

Royals starter Jakob Junis (8-11) allowed a one-out single to Lagares in the seventh and hit No. 9 batter Aaron Altherr with a pitch before he was pulled.

Seth Lugo worked a perfect ninth for his third save.

ATHLETICS 8, ASTROS 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Chapman doubled among his three hits and Mark Canha had two hits and three RBIs to back Chris Bassitt's six solid innings, and Oakland beat Houston.

Matt Olson and Josh Phegley each had two hits for Oakland. The A's have won four straight games and 11 of their last 16.

Bassitt (9-5) gave up three runs and eight hits with two walks. In seven starts since the All-Star break he's 4-1 with a 2.36 ERA.

Yordan Alvarez homered twice for Houston, which has lost five straight and six of seven after winning eight in a row and 18 of 21.

The A's scored five runs against rookie starter Rogelio Armenteros (1-1) in the third.

RED SOX 4, ORIOLES 0

BOSTON (AP) - Eduardo Rodriguez pitched 7 1/3 stellar innings, red-hot Rafael Devers belted a two-run homer and Boston beat Baltimore for its fourth straight victory.

Trey Mancini had a double - his eighth straight game in Fenway Park with an extra-base hit - for the Orioles, who have dropped six straight.

Rodriguez (14-5) allowed four hits, struck out four, walked two and hit a batter in setting his career high for wins in a season.

Asher Wojciechowski (2-6) gave up two runs in 4 1/3 innings.

PADRES 5, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dinelson Lamet pitched six solid innings, Ty France hit a tiebreaking single and San Diego cooled off Philadelphia.

Lamet (2-2) allowed three runs and six hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

Eric Hosmer had three hits for the Padres, and Josh Naylor tied the game with a two-run double in the fourth.

J.T. Realmuto homered for the Phillies, who lost for the first time since former manager Charlie Manuel returned as hitting coach on Tuesday.

The Padres went in front with a pair of runs in the fifth off reliever Nick Pivetta (4-5).

Kirby Yates pitched a scoreless ninth for his 34th save in 37 chances.

MARINERS 4, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Kyle Seager hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, Austin Nola also went deep, and Seattle beat Toronto.

Seager's two-out drive off the right field foul screen came on the first pitch from left-hander Tim Mayza (1-2).

Seattle won for the third time in five games after losing eight of the previous nine.

Anthony Bass (2-4) worked one inning for the win and Matt Magill pitched around a two-out double in the ninth to earn his first career save.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Week 1 NFL spreads:

? Packers @ Bears (-3.5, 46)

? Falcons @ Vikings (-4, 47.5)

? Redskins @ Eagles (-8.5, 46.5)

? Bills @ Jets (-3, 39)

? Ravens (-4.5, 37.5) @ Dolphins

? 49ers @ Buccaneers (-1, 49)

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) White Sox TV analyst Steve Stone is on vacation this week, so play-by-play guy Jason Benetti recruited various replacements, one of whom was Bill Walton, who worked Friday night?s game in Anaheim. As usual, I learned a lot from listening, and this is without taking notes:

? South America is the continent with the most bird species living on it.
? There are 129 community colleges in California.
? There are more people living in Orange County than in 21 states.
? ?Happy Birthday to You? is the most widely-sung song in this country.

And this historical gem; when Marvin Miller was elected Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association in 1966, the guy he beat out for the job is someone we?ve all heard of: Richard M. Nixon.

12) Philadelphia Eagles did a very smart thing and got QB Josh McCown to un-retire from the NFL and join them as a backup QB. McCown had recently started a studio job with ESPN- he is guaranteed $2M this year, can earn up to $5.4M with incentives.

McCown is 40 years old, has a career 23-53 W-L record in the NFL.

11) Which reminds me that a couple years ago, the reason CBS hired Tony Romo as an analyst is that the guy they hired first (Jay Cutler) also un-retired to play for the Dolphins (for $10M) so CBS scrambled for a replacement. Romo is a really, really good TV analyst.

Still want to hear Cutler, though; he has retired again but is on a reality show with his wife on the E! Channel (Very Cavallari)- he has a dry sense of humor.

10) Arizona P Alex Young is 4-3, 3.98 in his first nine games with the Diamondbacks; problem for Young is that Arizona was shut out in each of his last three starts. Hard to win that way.

9) Saturday was the 34th day in a row that a major leaguer hit two homers in a game.

8) Brewers 15, Nationals 14 (14)? Washington blew an 11-8 lead in 9th inning, then Brewers blew leads in 9th, 13th innings before finally winning just before 1am. Teams play again today, about 12.5 hours after this game ended.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Dodgers P Julio Urias was suspended 20 games by MLB (domestic violence)
? Red Sox put P Chris Sale (elbow) on the IL.
? Colorado put P Chad Bettis (hip) on the IL.
? Braves put OF Ender Inciarte (hamstring) on the IL.

6) On August 17, 2008, leading 7-3 in the 9th inning in Arlington, the Rays intentionally walked Josh Hamilton with the bases loaded and two out, to pitch to Marlon Byrd (who struck out).

? Hamilton was great back then (32 homers, 130 RBI)
? Maddon could do no wrong that year; the Rays made it to the World Series.

Grant Balfour was the pitcher who was told to walk Hamilton, then was taken out of the game; he didn?t look happy when he left the mound. Balfour would later be the A?s closer in 2012-13 when they made the playoffs? he was very good those two years (62 saves).

5) Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens flew to Tennessee Saturday for Darryl Drake?s funeral, despite it being the same day as a 4 o?clock kickoff for the Browns. Kitchens was the RB coach in Arizona when Drake was the WR coach.

4) Rays 1, Tigers 0 (13)? Teams combined to score three runs in 22 innings the last two nights. Detroit batters struck out 24 times, with no walks in this game.

3) Reds 6, Cardinals 1? Rookie Aristides Aquino has 10 homers in his last 11 games; this is a guy that hit .240 with a ,754 OPS in AA ball last season (20 HR?s). Go figure.

2) If the baseball playoffs started today (they don?t):
NL: Atlanta-St Louis-Los Angeles. Wild Card: Cubs @ Nationals
AL: New York-Minnesota-Houston. Wild Card: Rays @ Indians

1) There is a suite at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas that costs $100,000 a night; the thing is, they also tack on a $39 resort fee, and $9.99 for Interweb access. You?d think for $100K a night, they?d comp the resort fee, and aren?t Interweb fees supposed to be a part of resort fees? Oy.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Jack Flaherty, St. Louis Cardinals (6-6, 3.52 ERA, $-737):
This 23-year-old is absolutey dominating in recent outings, allowing zero runs in four of his last five starts. Over that span the Cards have gone 4-1 and Flaherty has a microscopic ERA of 0.57, a WHIP of 0.77 and 42 strikeouts through 31 1-3 innings.

Today, Flaherty and the Cardinals are -161 favorites on the road in Cincinnati. Flaherty has logged two starts against the Reds this season and has yet to allow a run through 11 1-3 innings. St. Louis is 17-7 in the last 24 meetings in Cincy.

SLUMPING

Jordan Yamamoto, Miami Marlins (4-4, 4.42 ERA, $428):
This 23-year-old is absolutely reeling. After starting his career off with a bang, going 4-0 in his first five starts with an ERA of 1.59 and WHIP of 1.00, the right-hander has crashed back to earth. In his last five starts he is 0-4, with a 8.28 ERA and has allowed eight home runs in 25 innings.

Yamamoto gets the difficult task of facing the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field today, and his Marlins are +158 underdogs. With Peter Lambert and his 6.75 ERA on the mound for the Rockies The O/U is installed at a sky-high 13.5.

3 STRIKES

THE REAL DEAL

J.T. Realmuto has been one of the top hitting catchers in baseball this season, cranking 19 dingers and driving in 66 runs for the Phillies. He's been on a tear recently, batting .462 with four homers and nine RBI in his last seven games.

Today, the Phillies will host the Padres and left-handed starter Joey Lucchesi. Luchessi has struggled over his last five starts with a 5.54 ERA. He also has a 6.15 ERA on the road this season. Realmuto has a .604 slugging percentage against lefties and the Over 1.5 on his total bases is installed at -105.

A GIANT SWEEP

The Arizona Diamonbacks will try to avoid an embarrasing series sweep at home against the San Francisco Giants. The D-Backs will have Merrill Kelly on the mound while the Giants will respond with Madison Bumgarner.

MadBum has an impressive ERA of 2.61 over his last ten starts while Kelly has a hideous 10.71 ERA over his last four outings. With Arizona batting .250 and plating just 4.79 runs per game at home, taking San Fran as slim -114 road faves has value.

DON'T EXPECT THE SCORING TO CEASE

Two teams below .500 face off in L.A. as the White Sox play the Angels. The Over is 4-0-1 in the White Sox last five games and is 6-0 in the Angels previous six contests. The Over is also 5-0 in the last five meetings between these teams in L.A.

With Dylan Cease and his 5.54 ERA on the mound for Chicago, and the Halos giving the ball to Griffin Canning who has a 7.91 ERA in six outings since July. the Over 9.5 is worth a look.

Greinke earns 200th win, Astros top A's
August 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) Jose Quintana pitched seven crisp innings, Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 on Sunday night in the MLB Little League Classic.

Nicholas Castellanos and Jason Heyward also connected as Chicago earned its second straight win since consecutive heartbreaking losses to the Phillies and Pirates.

The Cubs took two of three in the unusual weekend set and remain in a virtual tie with St. Louis for the top spot in the NL Central.

Starling Marte had three hits for Pittsburgh, including his 21st homer in the ninth. Mitch Keller (1-2) allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

With grinning Little Leaguers dressed in their uniforms filling the stands at BB&T Ballpark, Quintana (11-7) allowed five hits and walked none. The left-hander improved to 7-0 in nine starts since his last loss June 22.

ASTROS 4, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Zack Greinke threw seven smooth innings for his 200th win, helping the AL West-leading Astros avoid a four-game sweep.

Alex Bregman had a three-run homer among his four hits to back Greinke (13-4), who won his third straight start since coming over in a July 31 trade with Arizona.

Roberto Osuna got three outs for his 27th save as the Astros stopped a five-game slide.

Marcus Semien homered for Oakland, which had won four in a row. Brett Anderson (10-9) allowed four runs in five innings.

METS 11, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Pete Alonso hit his 40th home run to break the National League rookie record, capping a late outburst by New York against Kansas City.

Michael Conforto launched a long homer in the first inning and drove in four runs. Amed Rosario put the Mets ahead 6-4 with a two-run single in the seventh, and Alonso went deep in the ninth. He snapped a tie with Cody Bellinger, who hit 39 home runs for the Dodgers in 2017 on the way to winning Rookie of the Year honors.

Alonso also had an RBI double and scored three times during his second consecutive three-hit game. Rosario had three hits and three RBIs, and Joe Panik added three hits as the top four batters in the Mets' lineup combined to go 11 for 18 with nine RBIs and seven runs.

New York scored six times in the seventh to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead. J.D. Davis tied it with a pinch-hit RBI single.

Royals reliever Kevin McCarthy (2-2) was charged with four runs in one-third of an inning.

Jeurys Familia (4-1) allowed one run in two innings.

BRAVES 5, DODGERS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - With All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. benched for not hustling, Rafael Ortega stepped up with a sixth-inning grand slam to lift Atlanta over Los Angeles.

Acuna was pulled before the fifth after failing to run out a drive off the right field wall in the third. The ball bounced off the wall for a long single. The 21-year-old Acuna likely would have had an easy double if he had hustled from home plate.

Braves manager Brian Snitker followed Acuna into the tunnel for an apparent conversation during the fourth inning before Adam Duvall entered the game in left field in the fifth, with Ortega moving from left to center.

The move by Snitker came in a 2018 playoff rematch and the decisive game of a three-game series between the top two teams in the National League.

Ortega, recalled from the minors Tuesday, made the most of his second start with the Braves with his first career slam off Dustin May (1-2).

Anthony Swarzak (3-3), Chris Martin, Shane Greene and Mark Melancon combined for four scoreless innings of relief. Melancon pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer in the first for the Dodgers. He leads the majors with 42 home runs.

INDIANS 8, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Clevinger struck out 10 in five shutout innings to win his seventh straight decision, Mike Freeman had three extra-base hits and Cleveland tamed New York for a four-game split between AL pennant contenders.

A day after manager Aaron Boone and two other Yankees were ejected for again ranting against umpires, it was a relatively quiet afternoon.

Freeman hit a three-run homer and a pair of doubles. Oscar Mercado homered and drove in three runs, and Francisco Lindor also connected for the Indians. Clevinger (8-2) limited the Yankees to three hits and walked two.

CC Sabathia (5-7) came off the injured list after being out with knee tendinitis, and his original team scored four times against him in the second. Sabathia lasted three innings, allowing four runs and four hits. The veteran lefty is 0-3 in his last five starts and hasn't won since June 24.

RED SOX 13, ORIOLES 7

BOSTON (AP) - Rafael Devers went 4 for 5 with a homer, two doubles and four RBIs as Boston rallied from an early six-run deficit to complete a three-game sweep of Baltimore.

J.D. Martinez added three hits and two RBIs, and Sam Travis hit a solo homer for the Red Sox, who won their fifth straight as they try to climb out of a deep hole for the second AL wild card. Boston trails Tampa Bay by 6+ games.

In his last eight games, Devers is 20 for 37 with 12 extra-base hits and 14 RBIs. He raised his season RBI total to 101.

Renato Nunez had a three-run homer and four RBIs for last-place Baltimore, which dropped its seventh in a row.

Marcus Walden (8-2), the fourth of six Red Sox relievers, worked a scoreless inning. Paul Fry (1-5) took the loss.

CARDINALS 5, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer, Tommy Edman added a solo shot among his three hits and St. Louis held off Cincinnati to split their four-game series.

Jack Flaherty (7-6) had his scoreless streak snapped at 23 innings, but allowed only one run in five frames as the Cardinals stayed in first place in the NL Central, just ahead of the Chicago Cubs.

Carlos Martinez gave up three straight hits and two runs to open the ninth but hung on for his 14th save, striking out Eugenio Suarez to end it. Suarez homered early but also committed a costly error at third base and grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Reds rookie Aristides Aquino went 0 for 2 with two walks after hitting 10 home runs in his previous 11 games.

Alex Wood made his fifth start for the Reds after spending the first four months of the season on the injured list with a lower back problem. Wood (1-2) gave up eight hits and five runs - four earned - in five innings.

RAYS 5, TIGERS 4

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Ji-Man Choi's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth completed a rally from a late three-run deficit, and Tampa Bay kept itself in the AL's second wild-card spot and avoided a series loss to woeful Detroit.

The Rays trailed 4-1 after seven before coming back with two in the eighth and then the winning hit in the ninth.

Travis d'Arnaud reached to open the ninth against Joe Jimenez (3-7) on shortstop Gordon Beckham's throwing error and went to second when Willy Adames walked. The Rays loaded the bases on Mike Brosseau's one-out infield single before Choi singled to center.

Tampa Bay pitchers set a three-game series team record by recording 49 strikeouts, including 12 on Sunday. Detroit finished with three walks, with two coming in the ninth off Jose Alvarado (1-5).

NATIONALS 16, BREWERS 8

WASHINGTON (AP) - Juan Soto hit two of Washington's team record-tying eight homers in a 16-8 rout of Milwaukee.

Matt Adams and Victor Robles hit back-to-back homers in the first to give the Nationals a 4-0 lead, and Anthony Rendon and Soto did the same in the third as the advantage ballooned to 13-0. Washington has gone for back-to-back homers ten times this season.

Erick Fedde (4-2) won his third consecutive start, allowing four runs on ten hits over five innings and striking out two.

Chase Anderson (5-3) lost for the first time since June 21, allowing a career-high ten runs on nine hits with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings.

TWINS 6, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jorge Polanco cleared the bases with a tiebreaking triple in the eighth inning, helping Minnesota to its first-ever four-game sweep of Texas.

Polanco hit a two-out liner to the gap in right-center field off Emmanuel Clase (0-2). Minnesota maintained a 2+-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central.

Reliever Sam Dyson (5-1) allowed Shin-Soo Choo's tying homer in the seventh but escaped further damage. Taylor Rogers struck out Rougned Odor looking as the potential tying run in the ninth for his 19th save in 25 chances.

MARINERS 7, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Yusei Kikuchi pitched his first shutout in the major leagues, throwing a two-hitter that led Seattle over Toronto.

Kikuchi (5-8) struck out eight, walked one and retired the final 14 batters in his first win since beating Baltimore on June 23. It was his 26th start for the Mariners and first complete game.

Tom Murphy hit a two-run homer and the Mariners went deep four times. Kyle Seager hit a leadoff homer against Toronto opener Wilmer Font (2-1).

PADRES 3, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Austin Hedges had four hits, including a tiebreaking homer in the seventh, and Joey Lucchesi pitched six strong innings to lead San Diego past Philadelphia.

Luis Urias also went deep for the Padres, who had lost seven consecutive rubber games before taking two of three in Philadelphia.

Lucchesi (8-7) gave up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Hedges belted an 0-2, 78-mph curveball from Jared Hughes (3-5) over the wall in left with one out in the seventh to put San Diego up a run.

Kirby Yates struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his NL-leading 35th save in his 38th chance.

ROCKIES 7, MARLINS 6, 10 INNINGS

DENVER (AP) - Garrett Hampson hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning, and Colorado rallied to complete a three-game sweep of Miami.

Nolan Arenado homered twice for Colorado, which has won four straight and swept a series for the first time since June 18-20.

Hampson's game-winner came off Jeff Brigham (2-2) after the Rockies loaded the bases with no outs.

Carlos Estevez (2-2) allowed two runs in the ninth, but the Rockies tied it on Charlie Blackmon's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Trevor Story.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, GIANTS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Wilmer Flores and David Peralta homered, Merrill Kelly held San Francisco to one run in 5 2/3 innings, and Arizona avoided a four-game sweep.

Kelly (9-12) struck out five and allowed six hits in his first win at home since June 2. Madison Bumgarner (8-8) took the loss for the Giants after giving up four runs on six hits in six innings.

The Diamondbacks ended a four-game losing streak, spoiling Bruce Bochy's final game at Chase Field as Giants manager.

ANGELS 9, WHITE SOX 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Shohei Ohtani, Kole Calhoun, Matt Thaiss and Anthony Bemboom all homered to lead Los Angeles over Chicago.

Ohtani hit his first home run since July 27 and just his second since the All-Star break. He has a nine-game hitting streak, the longest of his young career.

Calhoun added his career-high 27th homer, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Thaiss hit a three-run homer in the second inning off White Sox starter Dylan Cease (5-6).

Angels rookie Griffin Canning (5-6) pitched seven innings for just the second time. Eloy Jimenez homered and tripled for the White Sox.

*******************************

Monday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??.

13) We mentioned last week how Ronald Acuna hit a ball off the wall against the Mets but only got a single out of it, because he thought it was a homer and jogged to first base. Well, it happened again Sunday, and this time the Braves took action.

Acuna singled in the third inning Sunday but it should?ve been a double, and he was pulled from the game against the Dodgers with Atlanta trailing 3-1.

12) Antonio Brown wasn?t at Raiders practice Sunday because he is upset that the NFL hasn?t approved his helmet; Oakland?s front office appears to be running out of patience with Brown.

Steelers took a $21M salary cap hit last winter to dump Brown for two mid-level draft picks, and now it is very clear why.

11) Sounds like Case Keenum will be Washington?s starting QB on September 8th, with Colt McCoy not 100% and Dwayne Haskins being a rookie.

Here is Keenum?s career path:
2012-14? Went 4-8 as a starter with Houston.
2015-16? Went 7-7 as a starter for the Rams, was replaced by Jared Goff.
2017? Went 11-3 as the starter for Minnesota, split two playoff games.
2018? Went 6-10 as the starter for Denver.
2019? Starter for Washington; will eventually be replaced by Haskins.

Coming into this year, Keenum has earned roughly $22M in salary, so despite his getting the short end of the stick in terms of regular employment, his bank account is doing just fine.

10) To make room for Josh Gordon, New England cut WR Dontrelle Inman, who three years ago caught 58 balls for 810 yards and four TD?s when he played for the Chargers. Am guessing that Inman won?t be out of work too long.

9) Didn?t realize that Rams-Cowboys tilt Saturday night was the first NFL preseason game in Hawai?i since 1976. They had the Pro Bowl in Hawai?i most years, but this was better than those.

8) Phil Mickelson shot 71 Sunday, finished T48 at the BMW tournament, after the hotel he was staying in was struck by lightning and caught on fire Sunday morning.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Reds put 1B Joey Votto (back) on the IL.
? Colorado P Scott Oberg (blood clot in arm) is out for the year.
? Nationals put P Sean Doolittle (knee) on the IL.
? Bryce Harper (dehydration) left the Phillies? game after the 5th inning.

6) Red Sox P Chris Sale is visiting Dr James Andrews today for a second opinion, which is rarely good news, not that Dr Andrews isn?t a good guy. Pitchers who visit the good doctor often get their arms operated on shortly thereafter.

5) Indians? ace Corey Kluber hasn?t pitched in the majors since May 1; be broke his forearm. His third rehab start was cut off after one inning Sunday, because of abdominal tightness that the team trainers did not want him attempting to pitch through. Not a good sign.

4) Liberty football coach (former Ole Miss coach) Hugh Freeze had surgery on Friday to address a potentially life-threatening strand of staph infection; he?s missed a week of fall camp already. Doctors say if his conditioned hadn?t been addressed, the infection could?ve reached his heart and that wouldn?t have been good, but now he is expected to fully recover.

3) From the New York Post: A South Dakota woman who recently gave birth to triplets said she didn?t discover she was pregnant until she went to the hospital with what she thought were kidney stones.

The woman has two other children, but still didn?t know she was pregnant; the triplets? names are Blaze, Gypsy and Nikki.

2) Sunday was a strong day for celebrity birthdays: Roberto Clemente, Robert Redford, Patrick Swayze, Denis Leary, Edward Norton (Worm in Rounders), Christian Slater, Martin Mull and Shelley Winters.

1) RIP to former NFL running back Cedric Benson, 36, who died in a motorcycle accident this weekend. Benson was the #4 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, played eight years in the league, and has the 6th-most rushing yards in I-A college football history.

RIP Jack Whitaker, 95, who passed away Sunday. When I was a little kid, he was host of the NFL studio show on CBS. I?m pretty sure he is the person who introduced the term ?sack? on a pregame segment for CBS. He was also a World War II veteran. RIP, sir,

Ballpark Figures - Week 22
August 19, 2019
By Joe Williams

Beer Battle

The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals will renew acquaintances at Busch Stadium II on Monday night, jockeying for positioning in the ultra-competitive National League Central Division. RHP Zach Davies and RHP Dakota Hudson will take the ball for their respective teams in this one. Surprisingly, these teams haven?t met since April 22-24 back in St. Louis when the Cardinals pulled off a three-game sweep, outscoring the Brew Crew by a 22-10 count. Davies pitched Game 2 of that series, a 4-3 victory over RHP Daniel Ponce De Leon. The ?under? connected in two of those three outings, too.

As far as Hudson is concerned, the Cardinals are 0-2 in his two outings this season against the Brewers, and St. Louis is just 5-5 in the first 10 meetings overall. Looking at the head-to-head results, there isn?t a lot to glean as far as lean. Hey, that matches! The ?over? is 5-4-1 in the first 10 battles this season between the two organizations. Weather Report

For the second straight day it appears Mother Nature will cooperate with a lack of precipitation and light and variable winds which will not affect the flight of balls. If there is one trouble spot, it might be Baltimore, while the Royals and Orioles face a 25 percent chance of rain. Even that?s a pretty favorable forecast, however. The bigger concern in Charm City might be the feels-like temperature approaching triple digits.
