LEADING OFF: Kluber checked, Ohtani streak, Brewers-Cards
August 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

CHECK HIM

The Indians will see how ace Corey Kluber is feeling, a day after he was pulled from a Triple-A rehab start because of abdominal tightness.

The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner pitched one scoreless inning for Columbus before exiting as a precaution. The 33-year-old right-hander will be examined in Cleveland.

Kluber hasn't pitched in the majors since his right forearm was broken by a line drive on May 1.

BRUISED BREWERS

The Brewers are hoping to have outfielder Lorenzo Cain and catcher Yasmani Grandal back in the lineup for the series opener at St. Louis in a matchup of NL Central contenders.

Cain injured his oblique Friday night at Washington and didn't play the rest of the weekend. Grandal didn't start Sunday after manager Craig Counsell said the two-time All-Star lost an excessive amount of weight a day earlier in a 5-hour, 40-minute game.

ASCENDING ASTRO

Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and newcomer Zack Greinke get most of the attention in a potent rotation for the AL West-leading Astros. But lefty Wade Miley (11-4, 3.11 ERA) has put together an outstanding season for Houston, and looks to win his sixth straight decision over 11 starts when Detroit visits Minute Maid Park.

BETTER BAUER?

Reds righty Trevor Bauer (10-9, 4.12 ERA) starts at home against San Diego. He's hoping to bounce back from his last outing, when he was tagged for a career-high nine runs in 4 1/3 innings at Washington.

Bauer is 1-1 in three starts since being traded from Cleveland to Cincinnati. In his last start for the Indians, he threw a ball from just behind the mound over the center field wall in Kansas City after getting pulled.

STREAKING

Shohei Ohtani has a career-best nine-game hitting streak for the Angels. He homered Sunday in a 9-2 win over the White Sox.

The AL Rookie of the Year last season as a two-way player is hitting .299 with 16 home runs and 52 RBIs. Ohtani, who isn't pitching this year while recovering from Tommy John surgery, next plays at Texas.

This will be the Angels' first trip back to Globe Life Park since pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room before the start of a series in early July. The teams played three games after the opener was postponed.

Hudson, 2 others pitch Cards past Brewers
August 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) Dakota Hudson and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, and Paul DeJong homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 Monday night in a series opener between NL Central contenders.

Yasmani Grandal's ground-rule double with two outs in the eighth inning off Giovanny Gallegos was Milwaukee's only hit. Hudson was lifted with two outs in the seventh after throwing 111 pitches, and Andrew Miller got four outs for his fifth save.

St. Louis increased its division lead to a half-game over the idle Chicago Cubs. Third-place Milwaukee is three games back.

Hudson (12-6) matched a career high with seven strikeouts and walked four.

Milwaukee's best chance for a hit against Hudson came in the sixth when Trent Grisham hit a hard grounder up the middle. DeJong made a diving stop and threw out Grisham at first base.

Hudson has completed seven innings twice in his two-year major league career. The 24-year-old right-hander threw six sharp innings in a 6-0 victory at Kansas City in his previous start. Before that, he allowed 11 runs (10 earned) over 11 2/3 innings during a three-start span.

St. Louis scored twice in the fifth off starter Zach Davis (8-6), who pitched five innings.

NATIONALS 13, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Asdrubal Cabrera hit the last of Washington's four homers and drove in five runs, and three relievers combined for 6 2/3 innings of one-hit ball in a rout of Pittsburgh.

Adam Eaton, Matt Adams and Trea Turner also homered for the Nationals.

Adams added two doubles and had four RBIs. Juan Soto had four of Washington's 15 hits and walked, reaching base in all five plate appearances.

Javy Guerra (2-1) pitched 3 2/3 perfect innings in relief of Joe Ross, who departed in the fourth inning. Kyle McGowin and Tanner Rainey finished the four-hitter with one inning each for Washington's 11th shutout of the season.

The Nationals scored four runs off Trevor Williams (5-6) in each of the first two innings. Williams was charged with eight runs - six earned - while giving up six hits and three walks.

MARINERS 9, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Tom Murphy homered twice and drove in four runs, Austin Nola also went deep and had three RBIs, and Seattle beat Tampa Bay.

Murphy had three hits and a walk, including a three-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the fifth. He has 15 homers in 52 games. Nola had a two-run homer during a four-run second off Rays two-way player Brendan McKay (2-3) and had an RBI single in the fourth.

Marco Gonzales (13-10) went five innings, giving up three runs and five hits to get the win.

Tommy Pham and Austin Meadows homered for Tampa Bay, which is 2-2 on a six-game homestand against Detroit and Seattle. The Rays had their lead over Oakland for the second AL wild card cut to one game.

PADRES 3, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Francisco Mejia hit a solo homer off the foul pole, Manny Machado had an RBI single in the first inning, and San Diego held on to beat Cincinnati.

Kirby Yates escaped a bases-loaded threat in the ninth to save San Diego's third straight win and earned his 36th save in 39 chances.

Trevor Bauer (10-10) recovered from one of the worst outings of his career by giving up three runs and fanning 11 in seven innings.

San Diego is three homers shy of the club record of 189 from 2017.

Freddy Galvis' homered and Josh VanMeter had an RBI single for the Reds.

Luis Perdomo (2-3) fanned four in two innings for the win.

ROYALS 5, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Nicky Lopez and Nick Dini homered on successive pitches in the seventh inning and Kansas City stretched Baltimore's latest losing streak to eight games.

Kansas City (45-80) won for the sixth time in its last 22 games, and Baltimore (39-86) absorbed its 13th loss in 14 games.

Orioles starter John Means (8-9) kept Kansas City hitless until Lopez led off the sixth inning with a single to spark a three-run uprising.

Jorge Lopez (2-7) allowed one run and two hits over five innings and Ian Kennedy recorded his 22nd save.

Jonathan Villar and Rio Ruiz homered for Baltimore.

ASTROS 5, TIGERS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Yuli Gurriel had two hits and drove in two runs as Houston built a lead with a big first inning and held on to defeat Detroit.

The Astros jumped on Detroit starter Edwin Jackson (3-6) for four runs in the first inning.

Yordan Alvarez and Robinson Chirinos also drove in runs for the Astros on a night shortstop Carlos Correa left after the first inning with back discomfort.

Ronny Rodriguez and Travis Demeritte homered for Detroit. Designated hitter Miguel Cabrera had two hits and drove in a run before he was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the fifth inning. Manager Ron Gardenhire was also ejected in that inning.

Roberto Osuna earned his 28th save as the Astros won their second straight after losing five in a row.

Houston starter Wade Miley (12-4) allowed a season-high 10 hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings to win his sixth straight decision. He struck out eight without a walk.

WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 4

Kyle Gibson (11-6), who retired 10 straight batters at one point, surrendered five runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Jorge Polanco hit his 18th homer for the Twins.

LEADING OFF: Mets manager Callaway faces former Indians boss
August 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

OLD FRIENDS

Pete Alonso and the resurgent Mets face Cleveland in the opener of a pivotal nine-game homestand against a trio of playoff contenders: the Indians, Braves and Cubs. All-Star Game MVP Shane Bieber (12-5, 3.27 ERA) starts for Cleveland against Steven Matz (7-7, 4.33). Mets manager Mickey Callaway was the Indians' pitching coach under skipper Terry Francona before getting the top job in New York. Cleveland begins the second leg of a weeklong visit to New York City after splitting a four-game series at Yankee Stadium last weekend.

Back in Ohio, the Indians got encouraging news about Carlos Carrasco, who returned to the mound Monday two months after being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a treatable form of cancer. Carrasco, who hopes to pitch for Cleveland again this season, threw one inning of relief for Double-A Akron against Harrisburg. When he jogged in from the bullpen, Carrasco received a standing ovation from fans. He got another one after striking out his final batter to end the inning.

''It was really special,'' Carrasco said. ''It feels great.''

The 32-year-old is scheduled to pitch again Thursday for Akron. He and the Indians will then determine his next step.

ON HIS WAY

Oakland is expected to call up top pitching prospect A.J. Puk before its series opener against the New York Yankees, a potential postseason preview. The 6-foot-7 Puk is a hard-throwing lefty with long hair who was drafted sixth overall in 2016 out of the University of Florida. He could provide a new weapon out of the bullpen for the A's, in a tight race with Cleveland and Tampa Bay for the two AL wild cards.

BEER MAN

One night after nearly getting no-hit, the Brewers face another tall order in Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha (6-6, 5.44 ERA). He is one of three pitchers to have a perfect career winning percentage against Milwaukee with 10 or more starts. Wacha is 6-0 and has held the Brewers to two or fewer runs in each of his last four starts against them. Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.81) goes for Milwaukee in a matchup of NL Central contenders.

In the series opener, Dakota Hudson and two Cardinals relievers combined on a one-hitter Monday night as St. Louis won 3-0. Yasmani Grandal's ground-rule double with two outs in the eighth inning off Giovanny Gallegos was Milwaukee's only hit.

MAD MAX IS ALMOST BACK

The Nationals are looking forward to Thursday, when ace Max Scherzer is expected to come off the injured list to start against Pittsburgh. The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw a bullpen Monday and said ''See you Thursday'' with a smile as he walked by a group of reporters. Scherzer has been on the injured list for most of the past six weeks because of a strained muscle in his back. His lone start in that span was on July 25. The right-hander is 9-5 with a 2.41 ERA in 20 starts. His 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings lead the NL.

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS

If the Red Sox are still going to make a serious playoff push, they'll have to do it without ace lefty Chris Sale. The seven-time All-Star is receiving treatment for inflammation in his pitching elbow that will shut him down for the rest of the regular season - another blow to the defending World Series champions. Dr. James Andrews gave Sale an injection of platelet-rich plasma Monday and said he'll be re-evaluated in six weeks. Looking beyond this frustrating season, the treatment could be good news for the club, which feared Sale might need Tommy John surgery. That would likely have cost him the 2020 season.

NEW WHEELS

Speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton has a new team after the NL East-leading Braves claimed him off waivers from Kansas City to bolster their injury-plagued roster. Hamilton is a five-time Gold Glove finalist and switch-hitter who gives Atlanta some defensive options and speed off the bench. He played in 93 games for the Royals, hitting .211 with 18 stolen bases. He has 295 career steals, including four straight seasons with more than 50 for Cincinnati. Atlanta is short-handed because of injuries to outfielders Nick Markakis, Austin Riley and Ender Inciarte, as well as shortstop Dansby Swanson.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Most profitable college football teams vs spread, last 10 years:

? Stanford 81-50-3

? Temple 77-48

? Central Florida 75-53-1

? Duke 71-51-4

? Oklahoma State 75-55

? Louisiana Tech 73-54-1

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: 13 of my all-time favorite TV shows??.

13 of my favorite TV shows (in alphabetical order):
? Batman? When you?re six years old, and in the opening credits every week, they show ?WHAP!!! POW!!! BIFF!!!? and your name is Biff, this quickly becomes a favorite show.

The villains were some pretty big stars back then (Burgess Meredith, Cesar Romero, Milton Berle, Vincent Price, Liberace, Ethel Merman)

I haven?t seen much of the Batman movies that have been made over the years, but the TV show had some humor; one week there was a 3-foot Martian on the loose in Gotham City, and Robin blurts out ?Holy interplanetary yardstick, Batman!!!? Good stuff.

? Billions? Showtime series about a hedge fund manager who pushes the boundaries of the law while his marriage falls apart. His arch-enemy is a prosecutor in NYC who is into S&M and his wife is his dominatrix? the wife is also the psychiatrist for the hedge fund manager?s company.

Small world. This show is really well-written- the next season will probably run after football season.

Trivia: Paul Giamatti plays the prosecutor; he is the son of former baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti. I suggested a cameo role for Pete Rose, but so far, that hasn?t happened.

? CSI? I spent a good chunk of my work career searching fingerprints and working for the NY State Division of Criminal Justice, so I enjoyed all the CSI shows, but especially the one set in Las Vegas? the actors seemed to have a chemistry working together.

One of my weirder ideas (a teacher friend of mine scoffed at this) is that CSI should be taught to all high school kids, so they realize how difficult it is to get away with crimes, so maybe there would be fewer crimes. What could it hurt?

? Green Acres? As a kid, I spent lot of hours watching Green Acres re-runs; my dad would walk into the room, say ?Why the hell are you watching that??, but within five minutes, he?d be sitting there laughing harder than me and would leave the room before my mother came in and saw the both of us laughing. She wasn?t a big fan of Hank Kimball or Arnold Ziffel.

? Law and Order? 20 years, 456 episodes, a great launching point for lot of acting careers, not to mention the spinoff shows that branched off this original show.

Take Billions; there are 32 actors who have appeared in 12+ episodes of Billons; 14 of those 32 actors appeared in at least one episode of Law and Order, and two others were in Law and Order SVU, and that doesn?t count Eric Bogosian, who was in Law and Order: Criminal Intent for 61 episodes, but was only in 10 episodes of Billions (so far).

? Magnum PI? I?ve never been to Hawai?i, but if I ever went, would like to visit Robin Masters? estate; I?m told you can visit there, it is kind of a museum or something.

One of the best episodes was when Frank Sinatra played a retired New York City cop whose granddaughter was murdered? this was near the end of both the series and Sinatra?s career.

The overriding themes of the show were that great friends will do all kinds of stuff for each other, and if you?re really good looking and drive a Ferrari, women will like you

? M*A*S*H? Years later, after watching re-runs of this show on our local channel 10 and the Boston channel for hours at a time, it dawned on me that this was actually a very sad show, with humor/jokes masking the grotesque sadness of wartime Korea.

The McLean Stevenson episodes were the best; he was Colonel Henry Blake for the first 75 episodes, and a lot of them were classics, just funny as hell.

? Mr Ed? This show ran on network TV from 1961-66, so I never saw it until the re-runs came on at 4:30 weekdays on a local channel in the early 70?s. Mr Ed was a talking horse, but he only talked to Wilbur Post, an architect who worked at home but never actually seemed to work.

Mr Ed was a big Dodger fan; his favorite player was OF Willie Davis. In one episode, the horse takes batting practice against Sandy Koufax, and hits a ball off the wall at Dodger Stadium, with the bat held in his mouth. A fun show, not necessarily a realistic one.

? Odd Couple? As a kid, Oscar Madison was one of my heroes; a sportswriter who always spilled food on his clothes but was a good natured guy who somehow dated a doctor or one of the Pidgeon sisters.

To this day when I see my cousin?s husband, we recite lines from Odd Couple episodes; when they owned a greyhound racing dog , or appeared on Password (a game show), or when Oscar dated a princess from some obscure European country ?You bought her a salty pretzel; oh, boy!!!? Great stuff.

? Ray Donovan? The most violent program on this list; just about everybody on this Showtime series that isn?t related to the Donovans eventually winds up dead.

Ray Donovan is a fixer for rich people, but he can?t fix his own family; his wife passes away from cancer, and the last time we saw him, he was still struggling with that.

Live Schreber plays Ray, Jon Voight plays his father (a genuine creep); they?ve had guest stars like Susan Sarandon, James Woods, Wendell Pierce, Hank Azaria. Alan Alda, C Thomas Howell.

Very good show but also very violent.

? Suits? This show is winding down its last season on USA Network; it is about a law firm that hired a young guy with a photographic memory who had one small problem? he is a college dropout who never went to law school, but he gets paid to take bar exams for other people.

The show had to change directions because one of the actresses (Meghan Markle) moved to England after she married Prince Harry in real life. Her character was married to Mike (the fraudulent lawyer) so they got written out of the last couple years of the show.

? West Wing? Martin Sheen plays the President in this show; his cabinet included Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, John Spencer? great cast.

Actor Duke Hill was in both West Wing and Suits; Mary Louise Parker was in this and is also in Billions. Alan Alda was in this, Ray Donovan and of course, M*A*S*H

Jimmy Smits, Mary MacCormack, Tim Matheson, Gary Cole, just a ton of excellent actors.

In one episode, President Bartlet has to throw out the first pitch at an Orioles? game, but he never played ball, so one of his aides has to teach him how to throw a baseball in a hallway in the White House, where an errant toss breaks an expensive vase.

? White Shadow? Ken Howard plays a washed-up NBA player who becomes a high school basketball coach in Los Angeles. Show only lasted three years, because well, high school kids graduate so they would?ve had to turn most of the cast over every other year.

The basketball scenes were really well-done; Gwyneth Paltrow?s father was the creator of the show. Lot of the issues they tackled in this show were issues that real high school in the inner city had to deal with. Ken Howard was great as Coach Reeves; he wasn?t some all-knowing guy; he had flaws but he fought for his kids and they respected him for it (most of the time).

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Sonny Gray, Cincinnati Reds (8-6, 2.98 ERA, $607):
Gray has been pitching well for Cincy all season but he has been especially impressive recently. Over his last three starts he hasn't allowed a single run and those contests were against strong teams in the Cardinals, Cubs and Braves. Over that span he's struck out 24 batters over 18 innings while allowing just seven hits (although his 11 walks might be a small cause for concern).

Gray and the Reds are -162 favorites today against the Padres. The two sides have played five times this season with the Under cashing each time. Over those five games an average total of 5.6 runs have been scored per contest so the Under 8.5 looks like a good play

SLUMPING

Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals (15-5, 3.82 ERA, $344):
The Nationals are on a roll having won seven of their last eight contests, but Strasburg is not rolling with them. The normally reliable right-hander is going through a bit of a rough patch with an ERA of 8.31 and a WHIP of 1.56 over his last three starts.

He'll try to get back on track tonight as Washington plays on the road in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are just 5-16 in their previous 21 home games and are 0-7 in Chris Archer's last seven starts. The Nats are -155 road faves.

3 STRIKES

QUIETLY ?CLAW?-ING THE COMPETITION

With names like Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer taking over discussions of ?NL?s best starter,? and youngsters like Mike Soroka and Luis Castillo breaking onto the scene, it?s easy to overlook Clayton Kershaw. Heck, Kershaw is arguably not the best pitcher on his own team this season, thanks to the way Hyun-Jin Ryu has been pitching.

But, very quietly, Kershaw has found his vintage form and has been nearly unhittable recently. The ?Claw? has pitched to a 1.40 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .167 batting average over his last seven starts.

Tonight, he and the Dodgers host an inexperienced Blue Jays team that will likely be without Vladimir Gurrero Jr., who is still nursing a sore knee. Kershaw will have a very strong chance to keep the Jays under their team total tonight.

OVER THE SPLITS

Everyone knows that the Rockies don?t hit as well on the road as they do at Coors Field, but that shouldn?t be a problem tonight when they visit Arizona. First off, because Kyle Freeland is starting for Colorado. The southpaw has had a truly awful season after an outstanding rookie campaign. Freeland owns a 7.09 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP this season and the D-backs have done a bunch of that damage. In three starts against Arizona this season, Freeland has a 10.80 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP.

The D-backs counter with a lefty of their own in Alex Young. The rookie is hitting a rough patch pitching to 6.91 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP over his last three starts. And Young actually pitches worse at home. Take a hard look at the Over 10 tonight.

Mets open crucial homestand with 9-2 win over Indians
August 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Michael Conforto hit a tiebreaking homer moments after an embarrassing error by Cleveland Indians left fielder Oscar Mercado, and the resurgent New York Mets rolled from there to a 9-2 victory Tuesday night.

J.D. Davis also went deep and Steven Matz (8-7) permitted only one earned run in 6 1/3 innings as the Mets opened a critical homestand against a trio of playoff contenders with a resounding performance. New York (65-60), which began the day two games out of a wild-card spot, improved to 25-10 since the All-Star break and matched a season best at five games over .500.

Pete Alonso hit a two-run double to cap a four-run seventh that broke it open.

All-Star Game MVP Shane Bieber (12-6) gave up four runs - two earned - and four hits in six innings for the Indians.

Jason Kipnis homered early and hit an RBI single for the Indians, but their first trip to Queens since 2004 was a flop. Cleveland split a four-game series at Yankee Stadium last weekend to begin an eight-day stay in New York City.

PHILLIES 3, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) - Aaron Nola pitched seven innings of four-hit ball to win for the sixth time in his last seven decisions, getting three runs of support in the first inning as Philadelphia cruised past Boston.

Three of the first four Philadelphia batters reached base, including back-to-back doubles by Bryce Harper and Jean Segura. Boston made it 3-2 on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s homer in the third but managed just four more hits the rest of the game.

Nola (12-3) allowed two runs and one walk while striking out seven. Hector Neris earned his 22nd save.

Red Sox starter Brian Johnson (1-2) allowed three runs, six hits and two walks, striking out four in 3 2/3 innings as Boston ended a five-game winning streak.

ORIOLES 4, ROYALS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Hanser Alberto hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth, and Baltimore ended an eight-game losing streak.

Royals reliever Jacob Barnes (1-2) sandwiched a pair of walks around two outs before Alberto hit a 1-1 pitch into the Baltimore bullpen for his eighth home run.

Hunter Harvey (1-0) worked a perfect eighth to earn his first major league win and Mychal Givens got three outs for his 10th save.

Baltimore had lost 13 of its previous 14 games.

Kansas City's lone run came in the second inning, when Meibrys Viloria hit a sacrifice fly following singles by Alex Gordon and Ryan O'Hearn.

ANGELS 5, RANGERS 1, 1ST GAME

RANGERS 3, ANGELS 2, 11 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Delino DeShields raced home from second with the winning run in the 11th inning, giving the Texas a doubleheader split with Los Angeles after an error by first baseman Albert Pujols.

Nick Solak, who hit his first career homer earlier in the game after making his big league debut in the opener, hit a hard two-out shot that got past Pujols.

DeShields reached on a one-out single off Ty Buttrey (6-6). He stole second base after Rougned Odor struck out before Logan Forsythe walked to bring up the rookie.

Emmanuel Clase (1-2) worked two perfect innings for his first major league victory. He was the fifth Texas pitcher.

In the opener, Andrew Heaney (3-3) had a career-high 14 strikeouts without a walk over eight innings and Mike Trout matched the MLB lead with his career-best 42nd homer in the Angels' win. Luis Rengifo also went deep for Los Angeles.

REDS 3, PADRES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the sixth inning, and Aristides Aquino added an RBI single as Cincinnati beat San Diego.

Galvis, claimed off waivers from Toronto on August 12, followed Josh VanMeter's second hit of the game with an opposite-field drive to left. It was his second home run in two nights and career-high 21st of the season.

Sonny Gray struck out 10 batters in six innings, reaching double figures for the third time this season and seventh in his career. He won his third consecutive start and improved to 4-0 in his last five outings. Gray (9-6) gave up four hits and three walks.

Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

Cal Quantrill (6-4) almost matched Gray strikeout-for-strikeout. He tied a career-high with nine strikeouts with no walks in six innings, allowing five hits and three runs.

BRAVES 5, MARLINS 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman homered twice and drove in four runs, Dallas Keuchel kept working out of trouble and Atlanta defeated Miami.

Freeman sent one went the opposite way in the fourth. The next inning, the Braves slugger went deep again with two outs to break a 1-1 tie, launching a pitch from Tyler Kinley (1-1) into the right-field seats for his 33rd homer of the season and second multi-homer game of the homestand.

The third Miami pitcher, Austin Brice, didn't fare any better against Freeman, giving up a two-run single in the seventh.

Keuchel (4-5) went six innings, limiting the Marlins to Jon Berti's third-inning homer.

Elieser Hernandez plunked Atlanta star Ronald Acuna Jr. in the back with his very first pitch of the game, rekindling tensions between the NL East rivals and leading to the ejection of Braves manager Brian Snitker.

Hernandez was lifted after four innings because of a blister on his right middle finger. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five during a 68-pitch outing.

ATHLETICS 6, YANKEES 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Olson and Mark Canha hit back-to-back homers in the first inning to lead Oakland over New York for the A's fifth win in six games.

Olson connected on a two-run shot down the right field line with two outs in the first off Domingo German (16-3) for his 26th homer, and Canha followed with his 19th on a drive to right-center.

That outburst proved to be more than enough for Homer Bailey (11-8), who shut the Yankees down after allowing a solo homer to Gary Sanchez in the first inning. Bailey allowed one run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking none and striking out eight.

Aaron Judge added a solo homer in the eighth for the Yankees. It wasn't enough to prevent New York from losing its second straight.

PIRATES 4, NATIONALS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starling Marte hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in eighth inning, and Pittsburgh beat Washington.

After struggling to manage anything off Stephen Strasburg through seven innings, Pittsburgh loaded the bases against Wander Suero (3-7) with nobody out in the eighth when Adam Frazier bunted a single past the mound. Bryan Reynolds tied it 1-1 with a sacrifice fly before Marte drove a fastball from Daniel Hudson 397 feet to right-center for his 22nd homer of the season.

Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez (3-1) went 1 1/3 inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

Suero, who gave up two hits and one walk, was responsible for three of Pittsburgh's four eighth-inning runs.

Strasburg allowed four hits and had six strikeouts in seven innings, and left the game on track for what would have been his career-high 16th win. He has 15 wins in four of his first 10 major league seasons.

CUBS 5, GIANTS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo homered twice and Cole Hamels pitched six innings for his first win in two months, helping Chicago top San Francisco.

Nicholas Castellanos also went deep as Chicago earned its third straight victory. Jonathan Lucroy contributed a key run-scoring single after the Cubs won a replay challenge.

Hamels (7-4) permitted three runs and five hits in his first win since June 12 at Colorado.

Austin Slater hit a two-run homer and Kevin Pillar added a solo drive for the Giants, who fell to 3-2 on their nine-game trip.

Fernando Abad (0-1) took the loss.

Kyle Ryan and Rowan Wick each got three outs before Craig Kimbrel finished for his 10th save in 12 chances.

MARINERS 7, RAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Tom Murphy hit a tiebreaking homer, his sixth in four games, in the sixth inning to lift Seattle over Tampa Bay.

Murphy's 16th homer of the season came off Jalen Beeks (5-3) after a walk to Kyle Seager. Murphy became the first Mariners catcher to homer in four straight games.

The Rays began the day one game ahead of Oakland for the AL's second wild card. The Athletics hosted the New York Yankees later.

Tommy Milone (3-7) got the win after giving up four runs in five innings of relief, helping Seattle to its sixth victory in eight games. Matt Magill pitched the ninth for his second save in two tries.

TWINS 14, WHITE SOX 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Nelson Cruz homered and drove in three runs on four hits in his second game back from a wrist injury as Minnesota beat Chicago.

Max Kepler hit a two-run homer to stay one ahead of Cruz for the team lead, starting pitcher Michael Pineda (9-5) stayed strong for seven innings, and the Twins raised their lead on Cleveland in the AL Central race to three games.

Cruz hit a career-high three doubles and became the first Twins player since Michael Cuddyer in 2005 with four extra-base hits in a game.

Jose Abreu had a two-run homer after Tim Anderson's RBI double for a 3-0 lead in the third. Anderson homered in the sixth inning, too, but the damage against Reynaldo Lopez (7-11) was already done by then.

ASTROS 6, TIGERS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - George Springer, Jose Altuve and Martin Maldonado homered to lead Houston over Detroit.

The Astros jumped on Spencer Turnbull (3-12) for six hits and five runs in three innings as he lost his eighth straight decision to remain winless since May 31.

Houston starter Aaron Sanchez didn't get out of the third inning. He allowed four hits and three runs with two walks in a season-low 2 1/3 innings in his fourth start since a trade from Toronto.

Brad Peacock (7-6) took over for Sanchez and struck out three in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Roberto Osuna collected his 29th save in 34 opportunities with a perfect ninth.

Victor Reyes hit his first career leadoff homer for the Tigers.

CARDINALS 9, BREWERS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Dexter Fowler hit a bases-loaded double and drove in four runs, leading St. Louis past Milwaukee.

Tyler Webb (1-1) earned his first major-league victory with one-third inning of work in his 79th career game. He struck out pinch-hitter Ben Gamel.

The Cardinals have won nine of their last 11 games, while the Brewers have lost six of their last eight. St. Louis remained in first place by a half-game over the Chicago Cubs, who beat San Francisco 5-3. Third-place Milwaukee is four games back.

St. Louis broke the game open with a four-run sixth against three Milwaukee relievers. Jeremy Jeffress (3-4) loaded the bases. Alex Claudio came in and struck out Kolten Wong. Junior Guerra entered and walked Harrison Bader, who was recalled earlier in the day. After striking out pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter, Fowler hit a 3-2 pitch into short left field that fell between three Brewers for a double and a 5-2 lead.

Wong hit a two-run single in the seventh, making it 7-2. The Cardinals added two more runs when Fowler and Tommy Edman drew bases-loaded walks.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Worst on-base %age from leadoff spot this season:

.284- Cubs

.292- Detroit

.302- St Louis

.306- Miami

.309- Seattle

.311- White Sox

Quote of the Day
???as a referee, I can tell you, we study those quarterbacks. We study their cadence. We study their physical moves. What do they do differently from first-and-10 to third-and-four to potentially get an offside. They?re very skilled.?
Retired NFL ref John Parry

Wednesday?s quiz
Who was the Vice-President when George W Bush was President?

Tuesday?s quiz
Washington Nationals used to be the Montreal Expos.

Monday?s quiz
Brett Favre owns the NFL record for most consecutive games started by a QB (290).

****************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Baseball teams with biggest drops in attendance this season:
501,090? Toronto
490,948? Seattle
350,168? San Francisco
241,173? Washington
195,516? Cleveland
192,168? Detroit
184,254? Baltimore
171,863? Bronx

There is no reason for fans of pathetic teams (Tigers/Orioles) to go to games; Giants are likely to miss playoffs for third year in a row and Bruce Bochy is retiring. Toronto/Seattle are just bad teams, though Blue Jays have nucleus of good young players. Nationals/Indians are having strong second halves, so their numbers figure to improve.

12) Baseball teams with biggest rises in attendance this season:
483,396? Philadelphia
245,025? Minnesota
158,287? White Sox
153,523? Cincinnati
153,005? San Diego
126,293? Dodgers

Phillies/Padres signed big stars and sold a lot of tickets; Twins are surprising contenders. No idea why White Sox/Reds have better numbers. Dodgers hit 3,000,000 fans for 8th year in row, earlier in the season than ever before.

11) Baltimore Orioles were -$129 favorites over Kansas City Monday, -$118 Tuesday, only the 5th/6th times in 126 games the Orioles have been favored this season. Miami Marlins have been favored in only five games this season.

10) Dodgers (48,661 fans/game) lead MLB in attendance; Marlins (10,047) are last.

9) Baseball stuff:
? Braves signed OF Billy Hamilton to use mainly as a pinch-runner.
? Chris Sale?s (elbow) season is over; it is hoped he can avoid Tommy John surgery.
? Indians shut down P Corey Kluber?s rehab (oblique).

8) Arkansas State football coach Blake Anderson is taking a leave of absence from the team; his wife Wendy passed away this week, after a bout with cancer. Defensive coordinator David Duggan will take over coaching duties.

7) USC isn?t in college football?s preseason top 25 for the first time since 2000, Pete Carroll?s first year with the Trojans. USC got only one vote for the AP top 25, UCLA didn?t get any, while Appalachian State got five, which seems a little weird.

6) Nebraska was 4-8 last year but is #25 in the preseason poll this year; thats a lot of faith in coach Scott Frost, who is in his second season coaching the Cornhuskers. Nebraska is 23-27 the last four years, since they fired Bo Pelini.

5) There are already 1,633 people signed up for the Westgate SuperContest (at $1,500 a pop); entrants pick five NFL games a week against the spread. Winner makes over a million bucks.

4) Of the first 31 calls challenged by NFL coaches this preseason, only five were reversed.

3) Refs called two false-start penalties on Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray Thursday, for the abrupt clap Murray uses before the snap- they better get that stuff figured out before September 8th. They should?ve figured this out in mimi-camp, but they didn?t.

2) Josh McCown?s football career path:
2002-05- Arizona Cardinals
2006- Detroit Lions
2007- Oakland Raiders
2008- Miami Dolphins
2008-09- Carolina Panthers
2010- Hartford Colonials (UFL)
2011- San Francisco 49ers
2011-13- Chicago Bears
2014- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2015-16- Cleveland Browns
2017-18- New Jersey Jets
July 2019- ESPN?s studio
August 2019- Philadelphia Eagles

1) What would happen if an NFL team wanted to sign a women?s soccer player to be their new kicker? Carli Lloyd drilled a 55-yard FG at Eagles? practice Tuesday.
