The Nationals will use RHP Max Scherzer against the Pirates and LHP Steven Brault on Thursday evening in the Steel City. The over has connected in four of the past five for the Nationals, and the over is 4-1 in their past five against National League Central Division foes, too. However, with Scherzer on the hill, the under is 6-2-1 across his past nine outings, while going 3-0-1 in the past four road outings. The under has also cashed in 15 of the past 22 road contests while going 4-1 in the past five against a left-handed starting pitcher, and 4-1-1 in the past six starts by Scherzer against a team with a losing record. The under has also connected in seven of the past 10 meetings in this series.

The over is 5-2-1 in the past eight starts at home by Brault, while going 3-0-1 in his past four outings against NL East clubs.

The Marlins and Braves battle at SunTrust Park with All-Star RHPs Sandy Alcantara and Mike Soroka locking horns again. These two pitchers battled on Aug. 10 in Miami with the over connecting in a 7-6 Braves victory. The over is 10-3-2 across the past 15 outings for the Marlins against teams with a winning overall record, while goiing 10-4-2 in the past 16 vs. RHP. However, the under is 4-1 in Miami's past five overall, 4-1-1 in the past six road outings against a right-hander. The under is also 3-1-1 in the past five road outings by Alcantara, too.

For the Braves, the under has hit in four in a row, including Wednesday's 5-0 victory over the Marlins. The under is also 4-0 in the past four at SunTrust Park, while going 3-1-2 in the past six inside the division. However, the over is 5-1 in Soroka's past six home outiings while going 5-2-1 in his past eight contests against a team with a losing overall mark. The under is 9-1-1 in the past 11 meetings between these teams in Atlanta, although the over is 4-0 in the past four starts by Soroka against the Marlins. As an added bonus, the Marlins have won just five of the past 26 trips to Atlanta, while going 16-39 in the past 55 meetings overall.

The Yankees and Athletics wrap up their series in the Bay Area, as RHP Masahiro Tanaka battles RHP Tanner Roark. This will be the fourth start for Roark since joining the A's after a trade from the Reds at the MLB trade deadline. He has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of the past three starts while the 'under' is a perfect 3-0 during the span. The under is 3-1-1 in Oakland's past five outings while going 3-1-1 in the past five at home and 7-3 in the past 10 at home vs. RHP. STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Gerrit Cole, Houston Astros (14-5, 2.87 ERA, $294):
At this point I don't even know if Cole is "streaking" anymore, he's just been so consistently great for an extended period of time. Of his last 14 outings, 13 have been quality starts. Over that span the Astros have gone 12-2 when he takes to the mound and he has a WHIP of 0.93 and an ERA of 1.98.

Tonight, Cole and the Astros are hosting the 38-86 Detroit Tigers and starting pitcher Jordan Zimmerman who is 1-8 with a 6.66 ERA. The Astros are 45-16 at home this season and are whopping -500 favorites. If you want a decent payout per unit you might consider the alternate runline of Houston -2.5 (-125) and -3.5 (+125).

SLUMPING

Ariel Jurado (6-9, 5.38 ERA, $-507):
Detroit's Zimmerman could have been our slumper but we've decided to roll with the Rangers 23-year-old. Texas is 1-6 in Jurado's last 7 starts and the right-hander has logged a 7.72 ERA with a 1.84 WHIP over that stretch.

Nonetheless, Jurado and the Rangers are small -120 favorites on the road for tonight's tilt against the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox will be starting Ross Detwiler who has an ERA of 6.10 and a BAA of .320, so consider the Over 10.5.

3 STRIKES

AFTERNOON DELIGHT

The San Francisco Giants take on the Chicago Cubs at 2:20 p.m. ET. Kyle Hendricks will pitch for the home side and he's been dominant at Wrigley Field all season going 4-2 with a 1.98 ERA and a BAA of .194.

The Giants will start Jeff Samardzija who has a terrific 1.53 ERA over his last five starts. The O/U has been installed at a low 7.5 but with a strong 14 mph wind blowing in from center field the Under is still worth a look.

SCHERZER STRIKES BACK

The Nationals rotation gets a huge boost tonight, as Max Scherzer returns to the mound for the Nationals after being sidelined since July 25th with a strained back. Mad Max returns just in time for the home stretch as the Nationals attempt to hold off challengers in the NL wild card race.

Before Scherzer got injured, he had been absolutely on fire. In his nine previous starts the multiple Cy Young award winner was pitching to a 0.84 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP while racking up a ridiculous 94 punchouts over 64 innings.

It?s no surprise the Nats are big -225 road faves tonight against the sinking Pirates and if he?s healthy there?s no reason to think he won?t pick up where he left off. Take the Nats on the runline tonight.

RUNLINE ROAD RAYS

The Tampa Bay Rays are one of the MLB?s best teams when it comes to covering the runline on the road at 36-27 this season and tonight they face one of the worst when it comes to covering the spread at home, the Baltimore Orioles. The O?s are just 24-20 against the runline at home this season and there is value in fading them to cover the +1.5 again tonight.

Asher Wojciechowski gets the call for the Orioles, and he?s been touched up to the tune of a 6.63 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP over his last four starts. While Ryan Yarbrough takes the ball for the Rays. The lefty has allowed zero earned runs on eight hits while striking out 23 over his last three starts. He also has two long appearances following ?Openers? against the O?s in July, where he allowed just two runs on six hits in 9.1 innings. Take the Rays on the runline again tonight.

Moncada lines two-run homer, White Sox beat Rangers 6-1
August 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Yoan Moncada lined a two-run homer on his return from the injured list, Ross Detwiler struck out a career-high eight and the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 6-1 on Thursday night.

James McCann hit a solo shot and doubled, and Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson and Matt Skole each had an RBI as Chicago won for the third time in four games.

Out since July 31 with a strained right hamstring, Moncada batted cleanup and made an immediate impact with his 21st homer as the White Sox jumped to an early five-run lead. He also doubled in the fifth and gave his team a scare when he fell awkwardly exiting the batter's box as he grounded out to end the seventh. He was tended to by a trainer and remained in the game.

Elvis Andrus' solo homer accounted for the only run against Detwiler (2-3) and was one of only three hits off the left-hander, who walked none over six innings. The 33-year-old earned his second win this season - and only his second in the majors over nearly three years.

Jimmy Cordero followed with two scoreless relief innings, and Kelvin Herrera tossed the ninth to complete a three-hitter.

Ariel Jurado (6-10) allowed six runs and 10 hits in eight innings as he lost his fourth straight start.

RED SOX 5, ROYALS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Brock Holt hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Red Sox won a weather-suspended game that began Aug. 7.

The original contest was halted after a 1 hour, 49 minute-rain delay early on Aug. 8 with the score tied 4-4 and nobody out in the top of the 10th inning. Royals catcher Meibrys Viloria was facing a 2-1 count against Red Sox reliever Josh Taylor.

Play resumed 14 days, 14 hours and 18 minutes later. Ryan O'Hearn struck out and pinch hitter Bubba Starling grounded out to end the Royals' inning. Starling took the spot of Billy Hamilton, who went 2 for 4 with a strikeout on Aug. 8 but was designated for assignment on Aug. 16.

Christian Vazquez doubled to center field after Andrew Benintendi struck out looking to lead off Boston's 10th. Richard Lovelady (0-3) intentionally walked pinch hitter Sam Travis before Holt singled on a line drive to left field to score Chris Owings, who was pinch running for Vazquez.

The official time of game was 3:48, with only 12 minutes being played Thursday.

CUBS 1, GIANTS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks pitched seven sharp innings as the Cubs won their fifth straight despite getting only two hits.

Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI single to help the NL Central leaders complete a three-game sweep. The Giants lost their fourth in a row.

A day after the Cubs won 12-11 in a game with seven home runs, there was a brisk breeze blowing in at Wrigley Field and the teams combined for just six hits.

Hendricks (9-9) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked none. Relievers Brandon Kintzler, Kyle Ryan and Rowan Wick each got two outs to complete the four-hitter. Wick finished for his second save as Cubs pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts without a walk.

Jeff Samardzija (9-10) gave up one run on two hits in seven innings against his former team.

San Francisco's best scoring chance came in the eighth. Crawford tripled off the right field wall with two outs against Kintzler. Ryan, a left-hander, then came on to strike out pinch-hitter Austin Slater to end the inning.

NATIONALS 7, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Max Scherzer pitched four innings in his return from the injured list, giving up one run and four hits.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner, who was put on the IL on July 26 with a strain in his upper back, struck out three and walked one. The Nationals hadn't set a pitch count for Scherzer but said they would closely monitor him. He threw 71 pitches, 48 for strikes.

Anthony Rendon and Howie Kendrick homered for Washington, which leads the NL wild-card race and won for the ninth time in 11 games. Kendrick singled, doubled and hit his 14th homer, a two-run drive in the eighth that made it 4-1. Rendon hit his 28th home run in the ninth.

The Pirates fell to 8-30 since the All-Star break. Steven Brault (3-3) allowed two runs in six innings.

Scherzer is 7-0 in his past 11 starts. Hunter Strickland (2-1) allowed one hit in two innings for the win.

CARDINALS 6, ROCKIES 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marcell Ozuna, Paul DeJong and Dexter Fowler each hit two-run homers to pace the Cardinals.

Fowler's 15th home run of the season, off of a 97 mph fastball from Yency Almonte (0-1) in the seventh, capped the comeback. Matt Carpenter set it up by working a walk in an eight-pitch, pinch hitting appearance to lead off the frame.

Dominic Leone (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis before the game, got the win. Giovanny Gallegos and Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless eighth and Carlos Martinez picked up his 15th save in 18 opportunities.

Ozuna's blast into the upper deck in left field in the fourth came after Paul Goldschmidt singled to tie the game 2-2. Ozuna has hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games.

DeJong drilled a German Marquez curve 423 feet into the left-center bleachers in the sixth to cut it to 5-4. DeJong's two-run homer extended his RBI streak to four games, one shy of his career high.

Marquez allowed four runs in six innings, on six hits, a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

BRAVES 3, MARLINS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning as the Atlanta Braves won their fifth straight.

Freddie Freeman hit a tying homer in the eighth and the Braves sent Miami to its 12th road loss in a row, the longest streak in the majors this year.

The NL East-leading Braves went 15-4 against the Marlins this year.

Adeiny Hechavarria opened the Atlanta ninth with a double and later scored on Acuna's single off Ryne Stanek (0-3).

Freeman's 34th homer, an opposite-field drive to left, came off Stanek, who lost his first decision since being acquired from Tampa Bay.

Mark Melancon (5-2) faced four batters in the ninth to earn the win.

Braves starter Mike Soroka hasn't won a decision in seven straight starts. Soroka, tied for the second-best ERA in the majors at 2.41, allowed no walks and struck out five in seven innings.

Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara gave up Hechavarria's RBI single in the second and allowed three hits in seven innings. He held the top four batters in Atlanta's lineup - Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, Freeman and Josh Donaldson - to a collective 0 for 12.

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) MGM took two huge bets on the Astros Wednesday:
$55,000 on Houston -$550 to win $10,000
$63,520 on Houston -$575 to win $11,000

Another bookmaker reported from Las Vegas on this game:
?Under our Listed Pitchers market, we have $10 on the Tigers. Literally. And $60K on the Astros.?

12) If you wagered $100 on the Astros in each of Justin Verlander?s last three starts, you?d be out a total of $1,170. Not good.

Verlander has allowed 57 runs this season; 40 of them scored on home runs.

11) I?m anxious to see what the sportsbook at Rivers Casino in Schenectady will be like when college football has its first full Saturday on August 31st. Would expect pretty big crowds, and the sportsbook is not a big area, but they do have lot of betting kiosks, so that should help.

10) SLS Las Vegas will officially become Sahara Las Vegas on August 29; the SLS used to be the Sahara- the original Sahara Hotel & Casino opened in 1952 with 240 rooms. It grew to more than 1,700 rooms after several add-ons and a final renovation in 2000.

I stayed there once, in 2015; good eating places, the tightest video poker machines ever? asked a bartender if anyone ever won there (I couldn?t win a single hand for like an hour). No sports book to speak of, just a counter to bet games. Beer garden was pretty popular.

My room was so small it made me laugh; seriously. They had mirrors all over, to make the room look bigger, even on the ceiling? the last damn thing I want to see while I?m laying in bed is me.

Pretty good place for eating/shopping, but not my kind of place.

9) Raiders 22, Packers 21? This game was played in Winnipeg; NFL fields are shorter than CFL fields, and the turf in one end zone where the goalposts usually are for Blue Bomber games was a little screwed up, so the teams played on an 80-yard field and there were no kickoffs.

Next week?s Hard Knocks should be pretty interesting.

8) Red Sox 5, Royals 4 (10)? This was the completion of a suspended game from August 7; Brock Holt got the game-winning hit.

Royals lost in Baltimore Wednesday night, then flew to Boston for this, which lasted a total of 11 pitches, and then flew to Cleveland, where they?ll likely lose more games this weekend.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Colorado put P Kyle Freeland (leg) on the IL.
? Pirates released C Francisco Cervelli
? Mets DFA?d SS Ruben Tejada.

6) As of Thursday night, 60% of money wagered on Saturday?s Miami-Florida (-7.5) game was on the Gators, while 69% of the money on the Hawai?i-Arizona (-11) game is on the Rainbows.

5) Ravens 26, Eagles 15? Baltimore has now won 16 preseason games in a row (13-2 vs spread), but 40-year old Josh McCown came off the bench and completed 17-24 passes for 192 yards and two TD?s, so Philly has their backup QB.

Game was stopped with 11:54 left (weather) and never resumed, so sides/totals wagers are refunds, which is a bitter pill for Baltimore backers.

4) Major League Baseball is prohibiting major league and minor league ballplayers from participating in the Venezuelan winter league this year, because our country recently placed an embargo on Venezuela.

Jose Altuve, Felix Hernandez, Pablo Sandoval, Ronald Acuna, Gleyber Torres, Ender Inciarte and Avisail Garcia are all from Venezuela; strong baseball country.

3) Bob Cousy received the Presidential Medal of Freedom Thursday night; Cousy, 91, won six NBA titles in his 13 years playing with the Celtics. He was MVP of the NBA in 1957, and also was a decent actor? he was Western U?s athletic director in the excellent movie Blue Chips.

Cousy was the only son of poor French immigrants living in New York City during the Depression; he spoke French only for the first five years of his life. Cousy?s father served in the German army during World War I.

2) Baltimore Orioles gave up their 259th home run this season Thursday, breaking the all-time single-season record previously held by the 2016 Reds.

1) ACC Network made its debut Thursday; it is channel 612 on DirecTV, right next to the Big 14 (610) and SEC (611) channels but nowhere near the Pac-12 Network, since DirecTV doesn?t carry that station.

LEADING OFF: Players get creative, Yanks at Dodger Stadium
August 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

NAME THAT NICKNAME

Jerseys will take on a different look during Players' Weekend, when big leaguers are encouraged to be creative with what goes on the back of their uniforms.

Cleveland outfielder Yasiel Puig will have Wild Horse, for the way he charges around the bases. Rays pitcher Charlie Morton will use Ground Chuck, for how he induces grounders. Reds first baseman Joey Votto will go with Who - for the ''Abbott and Costello'' comedy routine of ''Who's on First?''

Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis is skipping letters and going with an emoji - of lettuce, to rhyme with his last name.

OCTOBER PREVIEW?

Yankees lefty James Paxton is having one of the best stretches of his career. Paxton (9-6, 4.53 ERA) takes the mound at Dodger Stadium looking to win his fifth straight start - he won seven in a row in 2017 with Seattle.

Los Angeles counters with lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu, who is 12-3 and leads the majors with a 1.64 ERA.

New York manager Aaron Boone knows this series between the two teams with the top records in the majors should be special.

''I think when you're talking about interleague and two historic franchises having a great year, Players' Weekend, which should add some fun to it, I know it's something that we'll all look forward to,'' Boone said.

FLY THE W

The Cubs have won five in a row and are 44-19 at Wrigley Field this season, winning 16 of their last 19 home games.

The NL Central leaders try to keep it going when lefty Jon Lester (10-8, 4.23 ERA) pitches the opener of a three-game series against Washington and right-hander Anibal Sanchez (7-6, 3.99). Sanchez is 7-0 in his last 15 starts.

Chicago edged the Giants 1-0 Thursday with the wind blowing in at Wrigley. A day earlier, the Cubs outslugged San Francisco 12-11 in a game with seven home runs.

CATCHING ON

Veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli is available after the Pirates granted his request for a release. The 33-year-old Cervelli recently completed a rehab assignment after working his way back from his latest concussion.

Cervelli is hoping to hook on with a contender - there's speculation that NL East-leading Atlanta might be interested.

Cervelli hasn't played in the majors since May 25. He's been in 34 games this season, hitting .193 with one home run and five RBIs.

''Out of respect and appreciation for Francisco, we have chosen to honor his request to be released in order for him to pursue an opportunity that potentially gives him a chance at more playing time, as well as an opportunity this season to compete in the postseason,'' Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington said.

Hottest team: Braves (8-2 last 10)

Unfortunately for Atlanta, it doesn?t get to play Miami for the rest of the regular season. The Braves knocked off the Marlins for the 15th time in 19 meetings in Thursday?s 3-2 walk-off victory at SunTrust Park to pull off the three-game sweep. Atlanta finished off its homestand at 8-2, while the Braves picked up their first home sweep since mid-June against the Pirates.

The Braves travel to New York for the weekend to face off with the Mets at Citi Field, as Atlanta took two of three from its division rival last week. Atlanta has won six consecutive starts made by Mike Foltynewicz, as the right-hander takes the mound in the series opener. Foltynewicz is unbeaten in his last three road starts, as he squares off with the Mets for the first time this season after the Braves beat New York twice in his two starts against them in 2018.

Coldest team: Blue Jays (1-6 last seven)

Although Toronto lost all three games at Los Angeles, the Blue Jays hung around in the final two defeats as a heavy underdog. The Dodgers topped the Jays in extra innings on Wednesday, while Toronto squandered a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning as Los Angeles scored three runs to walk it off to send the Jays to their fifth consecutive defeat. Toronto?s offense has not been able to come through during this skid by scoring only nine runs in the past five games since posting seven runs against Seattle last Friday.

The Jays will battle the Mariners for the second consecutive weekend as Toronto invades T-Mobile Park. Toronto has lost six of its past eight road games since a five-game away winning streak in late July into early August. Trent Thornton takes the mound for the Blue Jays, as the right-hander is winless in his past three outings although all three losses came by one run each. Thornton faces the Mariners for the second consecutive weekend after picking up a no-decision in a 4-3 defeat last Saturday as he allowed three runs in six innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Jack Flaherty, Cardinals (7-6, 3.46 ERA)

Dating back to July 7, Flaherty has allowed a total of five runs in eight starts, while posting four scoreless outings in this stretch. St. Louis has won five of Flaherty?s last six starts, including home victories over the Cubs and Astros. The lone loss during this span came at Los Angeles on August 7 as the Dodgers scored two runs in the ninth inning for a 2-1 victory, erasing a 10-strikeout effort from Flaherty. The Cardinals had cashed seven consecutive UNDERS prior to a PUSH against Cincinnati his last time out, as Flaherty is facing the Rockies for the second time in his career after losing to Colorado in 2018.

Coldest pitcher: Dylan Cease, White Sox (2-6, 5.93 ERA)

Chicago has won only two of Cease?s eight starts since he entered the rotation in July, as both victories came against last-place Detroit. Cease was knocked around in his last start against the Angels by allowing five runs in five innings of a 9-2 defeat this past Sunday. The run support has not been good for Cease as the White Sox have scored two runs or fewer in all six of his losses, while the UNDER has hit in his past three home outings. Cease squares off with the Rangers on Friday as Texas is 0-5 in its past five Game 2?s of a series.

Biggest OVER run: Rays (7-3 last 10)

Tampa Bay?s four-game OVER streak came to an end in last night?s 5-2 victory at Baltimore that included a lengthy rain delay. The total stayed UNDER 10 as the O?s scored two runs in the first inning before not scoring again, while Tampa Bay trotted out seven pitchers in the win. Thursday?s win marked the 14th time in the last 16 victories that the Rays have scored at least five runs, while the OVER has hit 12 times in this span. Trevor Richards makes his second start for Tampa Bay after getting dealt from Miami as the right-hander lasted 3.1 innings his last time out in a 5-4 comeback win over Detroit.

Biggest UNDER run: Padres (5-0 last five)

San Diego returns home following a 3-3 road trip at Philadelphia and Cincinnati that saw the Padres score three runs or fewer in the last four games. After holding off the Reds, 3-2 in the series opener at Cincinnati on Monday, San Diego?s offense couldn?t get going in the final two losses at Great American Ballpark in which it scored two runs each. The Padres welcome in the Red Sox for an interleague series at Petco Park as Chris Paddack starts the opener. Paddack owns a 5-2 record and 2.53 home ERA this season, while the OVER has hit in his previous four starts at Petco Park.

Matchup to watch: Yankees vs. Dodgers

A potential World Series preview takes place this weekend at Chavez Ravine between a couple of old rivals who matched up in the Fall Classic in the 50?s and 70?s. The Yankees haven?t looked like World Series material of late after getting swept in the Bay Area by the Athletics to start their road trip, while scoring just nine runs in the three losses. The Bronx Bombers have dropped five of their past seven games, but New York remains eight games ahead of Tampa Bay in the American League East race.

Los Angeles swept Toronto in a hard-fought series at home, which included consecutive walk-off victories. Since dropped a pair of games to the Angels in late July at Dodger Stadium, the NL West leaders have won 12 of their past 14 contests at Chavez Ravine, including posting a 3-1 mark in home series openers.

It's a battle of southpaws on the mound tonight as Hyun-Jin Ryu squares off with James Paxton in the opener. Ryu (12-3, 1.64 ERA) is in the middle of the Cy Young discussion in the National League, although the Dodgers? left-hander is coming off his first loss since late June in a 4-3 setback at Atlanta last Saturday. Ryu had allowed four runs combined in his previous six starts (all Dodger wins) before getting tagged for four runs in 5.2 innings. The Dodgers own a perfect 11-0 record in Ryu?s 11 home starts this season, while not giving up a run in three of his past four home outings.

Paxton (9-6, 4.53 ERA) was 0-for-July as the Yankees lost all five of his starts, but the former Mariners? hurler has rebounded nicely in August. New York has won all four of his outings this month, including three victories at home. The road hasn?t been kind to Paxton this season as the Yankees are 4-5 in his nine starts away from the Bronx, while the OVER has cashed seven times.

Betcha didn?t know:
Jose Berrios has not won at home since May 24 as the Twins? right-hander heads to the mound against the Tigers on Friday. Minnesota owns an 0-5 record in Berrios? last five starts at Target Field, all as a favorite of -140 or higher.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Jack Flaherty, St. Louis Cardinals (7-6, 3.46 ERA, $-637):
The Cardinals 23-year-old has been absolutely dealing recently. Over Flaherty's last six starts, St. Louis is 5-1 and he's recorded an ERA of 0.74 and a WHIP of 0.83.

Flaherty should be in position to have another strong game today as the Cards host the Colorado Rockies who struggle to hit on the road. The Rockies have the third-lowest OPS in the majors in away games at .682. The Cardinals are -215 favorites and O/U is set at 8.5.

SLUMPING

Hector Noesi, Miami Marlins (0-3, 9.39 ERA, $-300):
The 32-year-old Dominican made his return to the big leagues earlier this month after spending the last three years of his career playing in South Korea. The early returns have not been positive. Noesi has allowed at least two homers and five earned runs in each of his three starts.

Noesi and the Marlins host the Philadelphia Phillies as +152 underdogs tonight. Noesi shouldn't expect much run support given that the Marlins a major league-low OPS of .661.

3 STRIKES

DEGROM DAY

Jacob deGrom day used to be a great betting day here at Covers HQ when the first five innings Under in deGrom's starts converted at more than a 80 percent rate in 2018. Sportsbooks have adjusted though and this year the first five innings Under in his starts is just 11-9-2, although it did hit in his last outing.

Today, deGrom and the Mets are -170 faves at home against the Atlanta Braves and the total is set at 7.5. The first five innings O/U is 4 and while that looks more than doable for deGrom who is 8-7 with a 2.61 ERA, it might be optimistic to think that Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz (4-5, 6.09 ERA) can do his part against a Mets lineup that is batting .302 over the last two weeks.

HOW GREINKE GOT HIS GROOVE BACK

Well, that didn?t take long. After a bit of a rocky start to his Astros tenure (see what we did there?), Greinke responded with two straight quality starts. The veteran right-hander allowed just three total runs on 11 hits with 12 strikeouts over 13 inning of work.

Tonight, he goes to work against the visiting Los Angeles Angels who counter with Jose Suarez. The Halos lefty owns a 6.75 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP this season and that balloons to 10.22 and 2.03 over his last three starts. The Astros hit .282 against lefties this season. Look at the Astros on the runline once again.

PADDING THEIR STATS

The Yankees and Dodgers isn't the only interleague matchup on today's card, with the Boston Red Sox on the road in San Diego. The BoSox are slim -113 faves and will start Eduardo Rodriguez. The Padres will respond with rookie Chris Paddack who has been very impressive at times this year but is going through a bit of a rough patch having given up five homers and 13 runs through 14 2-3 innings over his last three starts.

San Diego is just 6-13 over their last 19 games at home and Boston is a perfect 11-0 in Rodriguez's last 11 interleague starts. Boston is also 5-1 in the last six meetings in the head to head.

Sánchez blanks Cubs, Nats keep slugging in 9-3 win
August 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Billy Hamilton singled home the go-ahead run in the 14th inning for his first hit as a Brave, and Atlanta beat the New York Mets 2-1 Friday night for its sixth straight win despite yet another sensational game by Jacob deGrom.

The Mets tied a major league record by striking out 26 batters - including 13 by deGrom - but had their five-game winning streak end.

At 21, Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. became the second-youngest player with a 30-homer, 30-steal season. Only Mike Trout did it faster than Acuna.

Hamilton's grounder off Jeurys Familia (4-2) was just out of reach for diving second baseman Joe Panik, allowing Tyler Flowers to score from third.

DeGrom homered and struck out eight straight batters during one dominant stretch, pitching seven innings of one-run ball.

Luke Jackson (7-2) pitched two scoreless innings to win. Mark Melancon delivered a 1-2-3 14th to close out the 4 hour, 37-minute game for his fifth save.

MARLINS 19, PHILLIES 11

MIAMI (AP) - Starlin Castro homered twice and drove in five runs, and Miami spotted Philadelphia a seven-run lead before rallying to score their most runs ever at Marlins Park.

Isan Diaz hit a three-run homer, Harold Ramirez and Neil Walker each had three hits and drove in two, and John Berti also went deep for the Marlins, who pounded out 19 hits and have won six of their last seven over the Phillies.

Philadelphia led 7-0 in the third thanks in part to Scott Kingery's three-run triple and Corey Dickerson's two-run double. It was the first time the Phillies have blown a 7-0 lead since August 2003 at Montreal, when they led 8-0.

The Marlins tied it in the bottom of the third. All seven runs were charged to Vince Velasquez, who only recorded one out in the inning. Ramirez's two-run single made it 7-4 and Diaz's three-run homer drew the Marlins even.

Tyler Kinley (2-1) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Philadelphia reliever Nick Pivetta (4-6) allowed five runs, one earned, in 2 1/3 innings.

ASTROS 5, ANGELS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Zack Greinke won his fourth straight start since being traded to Houston and Yuli Gurriel hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to send the Astros past Los Angeles.

Greinke (14-4) allowed 10 hits, but just three runs - two earned - in 6 2/3 innings. The 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner came over in a July 31 trade with Arizona.

Roberto Osuna pitched a perfect ninth to get a save for the fifth time in six games and give him 31 this season.

Los Angeles starter Jose Suarez (2-5) gave up seven hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings to lose his fourth straight decision.

NATIONALS 9, CUBS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Anibal Sanchez pitched one-hit ball into the ninth inning and helped himself with two perfectly placed bunts, leading Washington past Chicago.

Washington had a short turnaround with an afternoon start after its 7-1 victory at Pittsburgh on Thursday night. The Nationals didn't arrive in Chicago until early Friday morning, but their loaded lineup looked as if it got more than enough rest.

Juan Soto and Adam Eaton homered as Washington improved to 13-4 in its last 17 games, putting pressure on NL East-leading Atlanta and strengthening its position atop the wild card standings.

Chicago had won five in a row, but it was unable to overcome a shaky start by Jon Lester (10-9) and another rough performance at the plate.

Sanchez (8-6) allowed one earned run while improving to 8-0 in his last 16 starts.

CARDINALS 8, ROCKIES 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jack Flaherty pitched six scoreless innings, Marcell Ozuna homered and drove in three runs, and St. Louis beat Colorado.

The Cardinals moved back into first place in the NL Central, one-half game ahead of the Chicago Cubs, who lost to Washington earlier Friday. The Cardinals have won five of six and 11 of 14.

Flaherty (8-6) allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked one. He has allowed one earned run in his past 34 innings and has won four straight decisions.

Peter Lambert (2-4) lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up six hits and four runs (two earned).

INDIANS 4, ROYALS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Brad Hand bounced back from his recent struggles to record his 30th save, Francisco Lindor hit a two-run homer and Cleveland beat Kansas City.

The All-Star closer, who had blown three consecutive saves, gave up a leadoff single to Alex Gordon in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Cheslor Cuthbert bounced into a double play, extending his hitless streak to 0 for 39, and Bubba Starling grounded out to end the game.

Lindor hit his 22nd homer, a blast to right field off Jakob Junis (8-12) to give Cleveland a 4-0 lead.

Rookie Zach Plesac (7-4) allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings.

BREWERS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jordan Lyles was pulled after pitching six no-hit innings for Milwaukee, and reliever Devin Williams gave up a bloop single with two outs in the seventh.

Lyles (8-8) was taken out after throwing 99 pitches. He struck out five and allowed just two walks, both to Christian Walker.

Williams relieved and retired his first two batters before Walker looped a single into shallow center field.

Four Milwaukee pitchers combined on a two-hitter. Eric Thames and Keston Hiura homered for the Brewers.

Arizona starter Merrill Kelly (9-13) allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Ketel Marte broke up Milwaukee's shutout bid with an RBI single in the ninth against Jeremy Jeffress.

WHITE SOX 8, RANGERS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Dylan Cease settled down after a tough start, Yoan Moncada hit a two-run homer for the second straight night and Chicago beat Texas.

Adam Engel added two RBIs as Chicago won for the fourth time in five games.

Cease (3-6) gave up three-run shot to Willie Calhoun in the first, but the 23-year-old right-hander set a career high with nine strikeouts in six innings.

Texas right-hander Lance Lynn (14-9) allowed seven runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He also struck out 10 while dropping his third straight decision.

PIRATES 3, REDS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pablo Reyes hit a game-ending RBI single, driving in pinch-runner Joe Musgrove, and Pittsburgh rallied to beat Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh won for just the ninth time in 39 games since the All-Star break by chipping away at Reds closer Raisel Iglesias (2-9).

The Pirates put together three straight singles to start the ninth, the last a flare to shallow center by Adam Frazier that scored pinch-runner Erik Gonzalez. A sacrifice bunt by Jacob Stallings moved Musgrove to third and Reyes sent a drive to the gap in left-center to give Pittsburgh its eighth straight home victory over the Reds.

Felipe Vazquez (4-1) picked up the win by pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.

RAYS 7, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Austin Meadows hit his first career grand slam to cap a seven-run second inning, Trevor Richards shined in his second start with Tampa Bay and the Rays beat Baltimore.

Meadows hit a 2-0 pitch from Ty Blach (0-2) deep into the center-field seats to send Tampa Bay to its fourth straight win over Baltimore.

Tampa Bay has won 11 of its last 12 away games and now sits atop the AL wild-card standings. The Rays' 42-23 road record is the best in the majors.

Richards (1-0) allowed Baltimore two hits and a walk over six shutout innings.

TIGERS 9, TWINS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ronny Rodriguez had three hits, including a grand slam, and Drew VerHagen struck out 11 in a career-high six innings as Detroit beat AL Central-leading Minnesota.

Rodriguez's first career grand slam capped a five-run sixth inning off All-Star Jose Berrios. The drive helped the Tigers, with the worst record in the league, cut Minnesota's lead to 2+ games over Cleveland.

Miguel Sano and Jake Cave each homered twice for Minnesota.

Berrios (10-7) allowed five runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

VerHagen (4-2) got another chance in the Tigers' beleaguered rotation and had the best outing of his career. He allowed three runs in six innings - his previous high for strikeouts was five against the White Sox on Aug. 6.

LEADING OFF: Braves streaking, Harper on paternity leave
August 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

BREEZIN'

Despite tying a major league record by striking out 26 times in a game, the Braves kept their winning streak going. The NL East leaders outlasted the Mets 2-1 in 14 innings Friday night for their sixth straight victory.

Atlanta is 9-3 against the Mets this season and tries to boost that mark when lefty Max Fried (14-4, 3.84 ERA) starts at Citi Field. Zack Wheeler (9-7, 4.40) is set to pitch for New York.

BRYCE'S BABY

Philadelphia star Bryce Harper is on the paternity list while awaiting the birth of his first child. He traveled home to Las Vegas and could be out of action through the weekend.

Harper is hitting .254 with 27 homers and 92 RBIs in 125 games.

The Phillies' drive toward an NL wild-card spot took a damaging blow Friday night when they blew a seven-run lead at last-place Miami and lost 19-11. Zach Eflin (7-11, 4.57 ERA) will next against the Marlins - he's 0-4 with an 8.42 ERA over his last 10 games, including six starts.

The Marlins took a big hit, too, when top hitter Brian Anderson suffered a broken hand after being hit by a pitch. He could miss the rest of the season.

ROLLING

Cubs left-hander Jose Quintana tries to add to his career-best win streak when he faces Washington at Wrigley Field. The 30-year-old Quintana is 7-0 with a 2.96 ERA in his last nine starts. He pitched seven scoreless innings in Sunday night's 7-1 victory over Pittsburgh in the MLB Little League Classic. Joe Ross pitches for the surging Nationals, who have won 10 of 12.

STREAKING

Astros lefty Wade Miley (12-4, 3.18 ERA) has won six straight decisions. Slotted in a rotation with Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Zack Greinke, Miley doesn't always attract a lot of attention. But he's been a key member of the AL West leaders, who take on Mike Trout and the Angels at Minute Maid Park.

ALL FOR ONE

Rockies righty Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-4, 5.87 ERA) starts at St. Louis, looking for his first win since Sept. 22, 2015, while with the Texas Rangers.

Gonzalez lost both decisions in 2016, missed the entire 2017 season after Tommy John surgery and didn't return to the majors until this June 25.

Cardinals rookie Dakota Hudson (12-6, 3.63) goes for his third consecutive win. He was pulled after throwing 6 2/3 hitless innings against Milwaukee on Monday.

Quote of the Day
?From an all-around standpoint, it?s an unbelievable basketball situation in that they?re in a great league right out of the [power conferences], sell out every night, charter everywhere, it?s a basketball-hot area of the country where it means something to people. I would say that?s one of the most underrated great jobs in the country. If you can get Dayton, I?d rather be at Dayton than a mid-level job in the ACC.?

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) We start today with a quick story??..

Back in the late 90?s, I coached Little League, 10-12 year olds. Did it for four years, was an interesting experience. Kids were mostly fine; parents, not so much.

My last two years, we had a very good team; there was this one team we always beat, and the guy who coached that team wasn?t happy about it, especially since most of the games were fairly close.

One day, we?re up two runs late in the game, and his third baseman makes a couple errors in a row; teams had 12 kids on them and everybody has to play, so six kids played the whole game, and six played three innings each. His third baseman was a 12-year old who was a pretty good athlete; we didn?t understand why the kid was a 3-inning player, but he was and he was having a bad day.

12) So the coach is getting on the kid pretty good; their dugout is right by third base and he isn?t letting up? we can all hear the stuff he is saying.

Finally, the kid takes a couple steps toward the dugout, looks at the coach and yells very loudly:

?HEY!!! You?re the one who put me here!!!? and goes back to his position.

One of the funniest things I?ve ever heard, just the way the kid said it, with disdain for this adult who couldn?t deal with losing a Little League game. Tremendous.

11) I usually enjoy HBO?s Hard Knocks, but I?m just freakin? sick of Jon Gruden; he seems like kind of a jerk, and he?s been overexposed on TV. Go coach your team (at $10M a year) and be quiet. Thought HBO would wait until next year to feature the Raiders, since they move to Las Vegas in 2020, but I?m guessing next year will be the Chargers? turn.

10) This is coaching in 2019:

? Miami Dolphins? coach Brian Flores says that veteran WR Kenny Stills hasn?t been playing well enough in camp.
? Monday, Stills ripped Jay-Z about his social justice partnership with the NFL.
? Tuesday, Flores played eight consecutive Jay-Z songs during practice.
? Why would a rookie coach troll one of his better players?

???So that was the challenge ? to get open, catch the football and make plays for this team, regardless of what?s going on outside of this building.?

Flores spent the last 16 years working for the Patriots, but I?m guessing he didn?t get that move from the Bill Belichick playbook.

9) Speaking of the Dolphins, whatever they do is their own business, but why the bleep would they start Ryan Fitzpatrick over Josh Rosen?

? Fitzpatrick will be 37 in November; Rosen is 22.
? Fitzpatrick is 50-75-1 as a starter, will become first player EVER to throw passes for eight different NFL teams. He?s playing for his sixth team in eight years.
? Rosen?s head coach got fired the last two years (UCLA, Cardinals), not exactly a ringing endorsement of the QB, but don?t they have to find out who it is they traded for?
?- Fitzpatrick didn?t even get a football scholarship in college (he went to Harvard) and is old enough that he played for Mike Martz back when Martz coached the Rams.

8) I used to spend a lot of my spring/early summer researching college basketball, because it would pay off in November, but the way the sport is now, I wait until about now to being my research because college basketball has very little continuity from year-to-year now.

The most talented players stay in college for about ten minutes, then bolt to the NBA; kids are always transferring (last year?s average was over two per team in D-I), so coaches are mostly patching teams together one year at a time. The best players from low majors often skip off to bigger-money schools, leaving their old schools in a lurch.

Makes for a very busy September/October, but thats the way things are now. Maybe when they let kids jump from high school to the NBA again, things will become a little more settled, but I wouldn?t count on it.

7) After I wrote #8, I saw an interview with Billy Packer online; the 80-year old former CBS analyst has some different opinions about stuff, but about college basketball he basically echoed what I said, that the better players don?t progress from freshman to seniors, because the better players are in the NBA before they?re 20.

6) One survey I read on-line tabbed Texas A&M (Buzz Williams) and Nebraska (Fred Hoiberg) as the two best new coaching hires in college basketball this season. I?d throw Eric Musselman (Arkansas) into that mix, but no one asked me.

5) Baseball stuff:
? Angels activated SS Andrelton Simmons from the IL
? Bryce Harper is on the paternity list this weekend.
? Tampa Bay 2B Brandon Lowe (hip) is out for the season

4) Kemba Walker scored 23 points as Team USA beat host Australia 102-86 in an exhibition game before 51,218 fans in a soccer stadium in Melbourne.

3) Most profitable starting pitchers this season ($100/start):
? Domngoo German, NYY 17-4, +$1,215
? Ivan Nova, CWS 14-12, +$1,166
? Lucas Giolito, CWS 17-9, +$1,130
? Brandon Woodruff, Mil, 16-4, +$1,097
? Clayton Kershaw, LA, 18-4, +$1,089

White Sox are 31-21 when Nova/Giolito start, 27-48 when someone else starts.

2) Least profitable starting pitchers this season ($100/start):
? Jacob deGrom NYM, 10-15, -$1,443
? Tyler Mahle Can, 4-15, -$1,038
? Max Scherzer Wash, 10-11, -$989
? Matt Boyd, Det, 8-18, -$982
? Jhoulys Chacin Mil, 6-13, -$927

1) Last five years, NFL divisional underdogs are 11-2-1 vs spread in Week 1.
