LEXINGTON, Ky. -- For the second consecutive game, freshman guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came off the bench to score more than 20 points and lead 16th-ranked Kentucky to a victory.

On Sunday, he had 21 points to pace a 66-61 Wildcats win over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 24 on Friday during a 90-61 rout of rival Louisville.

Kentucky (11-2, 1-0 SEC) trailed 53-49 with 5:18 to play, but a 7-0 run put the Wildcats on top to stay. A 3-pointer by Gilgeous-Alexander topped the run.

Georgia (9-3, 0-1) got 17 points from senior forward Yante Maten. The Bulldogs shot 39.7 percent from the floor and only 2 of 21 from 3-point range.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State used a 14-2 run in the final 4:22 of the first half to break open a tight game and get its 13th straight win since a loss to Duke.

Savannah State led 20-18 with 11:17 remaining in the first half and was only down 37-36 with 4:22 left before the Spartans took over.

Sophomore center Nick Ward scored 21 points on 9-of-9 shooting from the field and added 10 rebounds, and Cassius Winston scored 16 points and had a career-high 13 assists. Savannah State (3-12), which has already played six ranked opponents, was led by Dexter McClanahan, who had 14 points.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Jarron Cumberland scored 15 points and Gary Clark added 13 points and 10 rebounds, lifting Cincinnati to its fifth straight victory.

Jacob Evans III and Trevor Moore each scored 12 points for the Bearcats (12-2, 1-0 American). Memphis (9-5, 0-1) was led by Kareem Brewton Jr., who scored 17 points.

Cincinnati held the Tigers to 32 percent shooting and 4-of-22 success from 3-point range. The Bearcats also forced 13 turnovers.

NEWARK, N.J. -- Khadeen Carrington scored 24 points and Desi Rodriguez added 23 points and nine rebounds to lead Seton Hall.

Angel Delgado recorded the 61st double-double of his career with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Seton Hall (13-2, 2-0 Big East). He also had six assists.

St. John's (10-4, 0-2) was without its leading scorer, Shamorie Ponds, who was sidelined due to an injured knee he sustained against Providence on Thursday. Tariq Owens paced the Red Storm with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton bounced back from a Thursday loss at Seton Hall with a convincing Big East win.

Marcus Foster led five Creighton players in double figures with 18 points. Providence center Nate Watson led all players with 20 points.

Creighton (11-3, 1-1 Big East) broke open a tight game with a 9-0 run in the middle of the first half that turned a two-point lead to a 25-14 advantage. Providence (10-5, 1-1) went 6:18 between baskets and was 5 of 22 (22.8 percent) from the field for the first 13-plus minutes of the game.

Preview: Mountainers (12-1) at Wildcats (11-2)

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- In the Big 12 Conference, where road victories are hard to find, four of the five teams won on the road on the conference season-opening weekend. Included in that group are No. 7 West Virginia and Kansas State. The Mountaineers won 85-79 at Oklahoma State and K-State won 91-75 at Iowa State.

They will square off in a New Year's Day matinee looking for a very early lead in the conference race.

"To win road games you have to have somebody step up and be special," said Kansas State coach Bruce Weber, who saw junior Dean Wade score a career-high 34 points against the Cyclones. "(Wade) was huge. (He) shot it with confidence; played with confidence; wanted the ball and asked out when he got tired."

The Big 12 is loaded, and there are no easy victories. Six of the 10 teams in the Big 12 are ranked, and eight received votes in the latest AP poll. Only K-State and Iowa State did not receive votes. A victory over the Mountaineers would certainly draw some attention for the Wildcats (11-2, 1-0).

But they'll have to spread around their scoring a little bit better than they did against the Cyclones. Seventy-eight of K-State's 91 points came from just three players. In addition to Wade's 34, Kamau Stokes scored 23 and Barry Brown added 21.

"Cam and Barry were pretty special, too," Weber said. "The three guys that have the experience made the plays."

West Virginia (12-1, 1-0) does a much better job of sharing the scoring load. Freshman Teddy Allen came off the bench to lead six double-figure scorers with 15 points, 13 of those coming in the second half. Sagaba Kanate also played a strong second half and finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles contributed 12 each, but Carter made just 2-of-10 field goal attempts and had a career-high eight turnovers.

"Teddy did a good job," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "He made some good cuts and good reads. (Carter) didn't play very well, but the first thing he said when he (got) into the locker room was, 'I didn't play very well and I'm sorry, but we won and I'm happy.' That's rhetoric for some people but he means it. He's a guy that loves to win."

Winning is what West Virginia has done a lot recently in this series, taking seven of the last eight contests. The Mountaineers own an 8-5 advantage in the all-time series, including 7-4 in Big 12 play.

After losing their season-opener against Texas A&M in the Armed Forces Classic in Ramstein, Germany, the Mountaineers have won 12 straight games.

Huggins, who moved past Jim Phelan into seventh place in all-time Division I coaching victories with 831, coached at Kansas State for one season (2006-07). He was 23-12, including 10-6 in the Big 12, and led the Wildcats to the NIT, the first post-season berth in eight years.

13) NFL coaching carousel: Colts-Raiders-Cardinals-Bears-Lions now need new head coaches, joining the Giants.

Broncos keep Vance Joseph for next year; Cleveland keeps Hue Jackson- no word out of Cincinnati on Marvin Lewis yet.

12) Georgia 54, Oklahoma 48 OT? Total yardage was 531-527 Oklahoma; they led 31-14 right before halftime, but a messed-up squib kick allowed Georgia to kick a FG at the halftime gun, and that turned out to be huge.

Now the debate about Baker Mayfield?s NFL prospects can begin; very polarizing kid. He was 23-35/287 yards in this game.

11) Alabama 24, Clemson 6? SEC is 4-5 n bowl games this year, but they?ve got two teams playing for the national title next week in Atlanta.

As great a game as the Rose Bowl, this game was a dud- Clemson didn?t have the QB play to move the ball at all on Alabama. Hell, Clemson barely beat the Crimson Tide last year, when they had Deshaun Watson.

10) Central Florida 34, Auburn 27? Good for the UCF kids; their coach bolted to Nebra$ka about 90 $econds after they won their conference title game, but UCF wins their New Year?s Day bowl game and finished an unbeaten season. Two years ago, the Knights went 0-12.

Central Florida is a very big school and is a sleeping giant athletically.It doesn?t have Nebraska?s tradition, but it has a brighter future, given the wealth of high school football talent in Florida.

9) North Texas starts league play 2-0 in Conference USA, with pair of one-point wins, in El Paso and San Antonio. Been six years since the Mean Green?s basketball team finished conference play over .500, back when Johnny Jones was UNT?s coach, before he bolted to LSU.

8) You read about all these NFL coaching vacancies and who gets interviewed and all, and I think about the late Al Davis, who would often interview people he had no intention of hiring, but what he wanted was to pick their brain, to know what they knew, to help him down the road.

I?m guessing that Sean McVay?s success this season will lead to a couple of younger guys getting head coaching jobs this winter. People tend to imitate successful teams.

7) Sunday night score: Rockets 148, Lakers 142 2OT? Houston?s bench was +46 in this game; Lakers? subs were -30. Rockets snapped a 5-game losing streak.

6) Georgia Bulldogs QB Jake Fromm hit three homers in the 2011 Little League World Series.

5) Arizona Cardinals played really well on defense down the stretch; in their last six games, Redbird opponents converted only 11 of 70 third down plays.

4) One of the more overrated things TV guys say a lot is, when a team plays a poor first half, ??that coach must be peeling the paint off the walls in the locker room!!!?

Oftentimes, if a team is getting waxed at halftime, there are tactical adjustments that need to be made, and that takes brain power and grease boards, not screaming/yelling, especially in the NFL, where halftime is 12 short minutes.

I spent many years as a part of basketball programs; the best coaches I worked for rarely yelled at halftime, they addressed what needed to be done and how we were going to do it.

3) Rams host Atlanta in the playoffs Saturday night; their last playoff game was a 47-17 loss in the Georgia Dome to the Michael Vick-led Falcons in 2004.

2) This from a New York Times article a friend e-mailed me over the weekend:

?(The ACC has) corporate sponsors include Toyota, Gatorade and Geico. When the conference filed its annual tax return for 2015, it reported about a quarter-billion dollars from broadcasting games for its member universities, as well as $147 million in other sports-related revenue. Its commissioner earned $2.9 million. The ACC was a huge commercial success with income that would normally generate a huge tax bill.

But no taxes were owed. As the conference explained in its filing with the Internal Revenue Service, the Atlantic Coast and its member schools are nonprofit charitable organizations that place an emphasis on ?academic excellence??

College sports is big business, for sure.

1) Buffalo Bills fans are so happy the Bengals beat Baltimore to put the Bills into the playoffs that they?ve contributed over $57,000 to Cincinnati QB Andy Dalton?s charitable foundation in the last 24 hours. Bills are in the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

No. 21 Texas Tech Red Raiders at No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks (-7, 149)

Texas Tech is a perfect 3-0 against top-25 opponents this year including a 77-53 smack-down of No. 17 Baylor on Friday night in its Big 12 opener. The Red Raiders will try to make it four in a row over ranked foes this season on Tuesday night when they travel to 11th-ranked Kansas.

The Jayhawks, who opened conference play with a 92-86 win at Texas, have won 13 Big 12 titles in a row so a road win would be huge for Texas Tech. Second-year Red raiders head coach Chris Beard will be trying to make history Tuesday night because the Red Raiders, who lost by just one point to then-No. 3 Kansas (80-79) at home last season, are 0-17 all-time at Allen Fieldhouse. Toss in the fact that Kansas has won 11 straight home conference openers dating back to a 59-55 loss to Kansas State on Jan. 14, 2006 and the Red Raiders definitely are trying to buck some pretty big trends. "The word around our camp today and yesterday and, eventually, tomorrow is opportunity," Beard said. "You get into this to play against the best and coach against the best. This is a great early conference game for us to see where we stack up against one of the best teams in the country."

LINE HISTORY: Kansas opened as 8.5-point home favorites and by Tuesday morning that number was bet down to -7. The total hit betting boards at 149 and has yet to move.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (12-1 SU, 6-3 ATS, 3-6 O/U): The Red Raiders jumped out to a 40-19 halftime lead against Baylor en route to their largest margin of victory in the Big 12 since 2010-11. Senior guard Keenan Evans leads the team in scoring with 16.6 points per game, which is tied for sixth in the Big 12 and also leads the team with 22 3-pointers, 47 assists and 20 steals. Freshmen guards Zhaire Smith (10.7 points) and Jarrett Culver (10.4) also are averaging in double figures on a team that has 10 players averaging 13 or more minutes per game.

ABOUT KANSAS (11-2 SU, 8-4 ATS, 5-7 O/U): The Jayhawks, who are averaging 87.8 points per game and shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, are one of six teams in Division I that have five players averaging 10.6 points or better. Junior guard Lagerald Vick leads the team in scoring (17.4) and is second in rebounding (6.4) and had 21 points in the win at Texas, his sixth 20-point game of the season. Senior guards Devonte' Graham (17.2 points) and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (16.6) also are off to hot starts while 7-foot sophomore center Udoka Azubuike (15.3) and sophomore guard Malik Newman (10.6), a highly touted transfer from Mississippi State, also are averaging in double figures.

Both these Texas squads suffered losses in their Big 12 openers over the weekend as they each seek their first conference win. The Horned Frogs (12-1 SU, 6-6 ATS) entered Saturday?s action as only one of three undefeated teams remaining in the country, but they lost in the final seconds to Oklahoma, 90-89 as 2 ?-point home favorites. Jamie Dixon?s squad has yet to play a true road game this season, as the Frogs compiled a 2-7 SU and 3-6 ATS record against conference foes away from Ft. Worth last season.

The Bears (10-3 SU, 3-3 ATS) suffered a 24-point setback at Texas Tech on Friday, 77-53 as 7 ?-point underdogs to snap a five-game winning streak. Baylor fell behind, 40-19 at halftime and never recovered as Scott Drew?s club shot 37% from the floor, including 3-of-12 from three-point range. The Bears own a solid 8-1 home record, although Baylor cleaned up on subpar competition with their only loss coming to a terrific Wichita State team.

Since 2013, Baylor has won 10 consecutive meetings with TCU, including a season sweep last season. The Horned Frogs struggled to score against the Bears by getting held to 53 and 52 points in the two defeats, as TCU has compiled a dreadful 1-9 ATS record in this stretch.

Butler at Xavier (-7, 154) ? 7:00 PM EST ? FS1

The Bulldogs (12-3 SU, 8-6 ATS) overcame a 20-point deficit to stun Georgetown in overtime of their Big East opener last week, but didn?t dig themselves a hole against top-ranked Villanova on Saturday.

Butler built a 23-point advantage before holding off Villanova, 101-93 to cash outright as 5 ?-point home underdogs. The Bulldogs shot lights out from three-point range (15-of-22), led by Kelan Martin?s 24 points and Paul Jorgensen?s 23 points. Butler has cashed the OVER in seven consecutive games, while topping the 90-point mark in four of the past six contests.

Xavier (14-1 SU, 11-4 ATS) edged DePaul on Saturday, 77-72 as 14-point favorites to improve to 2-0 in Big East play. The Musketeers erased an eight-point halftime lead and beat the Blue Demons in spite of shooting 42% from the field. Chris Mack?s club has yet to lose at the Cintas Center this season, going 10-0, including victories over Cincinnati and Baylor.

Last season, the road team won each meeting as Butler knocked off Xavier in Cincinnati, 88-79 as 2 ?-point away favorites in February. Butler has won six of its past seven road conference games since last January, while Xavier has struggled against the number recently in Big East play by going 4-13 ATS in the past 17 conference tilts.

Tech outrebounded Baylor, 36-17, while connecting on 50% of their shots from the floor. The key to reaching elite status in the Big 12 is winning on the road, as the Red Raiders posted a miserable 0-9 SU and 3-6 ATS mark away from Lubbock in conference play last season.

Amazingly, Kansas won its conference opener for the 27th straight season, while looking to extend its streak to 14 consecutive regular season Big 12 titles this season.

Bill Self?s squad has won 16 straight matchups with Texas Tech since getting surprised in Lubbock, 84-69 in March 2009. The Jayhawks captured eight of nine home conference games last season, but put together a 2-7 ATS mark as one of those two covers came against Texas Tech in a 17-point blowout.

The Gators (9-4 SU, 5-7 ATS) suffered several hiccups in non-conference play in December by losing consecutive home games to Florida State and Loyola-Illinois. Florida is currently on a three-game winning streak, capped off by a victory in its SEC opener over Vanderbilt on Saturday, 81-74, but the Gators failed to cash as 9 ?-point favorites. Mike White?s club jumped out to a 20-point halftime edge before the Commodores rallied for the cover.

The Aggies (11-2 SU, 5-5 ATS) were crushed in their conference opener on Saturday at Alabama, 79-57 to end a four-game winning streak. Texas A&M continues to play without star forward D.J. Hogg (14.6 ppg), who is serving a three-game suspension for a violation of team rules and will be out again tonight. The Aggies have won all seven home contests this season, although there weren?t any standout victories.

Florida knocked off Texas A&M in their lone matchup last season in Gainesville, 71-62 as 11 ?-point favorites, as the Gators seek their first win in College Station since 2013. The Aggies struggled at home against SEC foes last season by going 2-7 ATS, while the Gators put together an impressive 6-3 SU and 5-4 ATS mark away from Gainesville in SEC play.

Conference races heat up in this week in the AP Top 25

The last Saturday in 2017 took out the final three unbeaten teams.

The first week in 2018 could be a big early step in determining races in three conferences.

The week features six games between ranked teams, including four on Saturday.

Oklahoma has a tough week after moving up to No. 7, facing rival Oklahoma State on Wednesday, then heading to No. 6 West Virginia on Saturday.

The Sooners (11-1) have been on the rise since entering the Top 25 three weeks ago, generating a national buzz with freshman guard Trae Young having his way with whoever tries to guard him.

The Bedlam game is always difficult and the Sooners won't have it any easier against the Mountaineers (11-1), who have won 11 straight since an opening loss to Texas A&M.

Press Virginia against the nation's leader in scoring and assists? Bring it on.

Kansas (11-2) appears to be back on track for making a run at a 14th straight Big 12 title, moving up to No. 10 in this week's poll after beating Texas on Friday for its fourth straight win. The Jayhawks face a pair of big tests this week, starting with No. 18 Texas Tech on Tuesday.

Kansas then moves on to play at No. 16 TCU, which had its undefeated season end with a loss to Oklahoma last week. The Horned Frogs climbed up to No. 10 before the loss, the program's highest ranking, and face Baylor on Tuesday before hosting the Jayhawks.

''Our team, I think we're going to be really good by the end,'' Kansas coach Bill Self said. ''But I don't think that we're going to be close to what we can be until February and that's with everybody getting favorable outcomes.''

North Carolina (11-2) won't have an easy week, either, though there rarely is one in the ACC.

The No. 12 Tar Heels, who beat Wake Forest in their ACC opener, play at No. 24 Florida State on Wednesday and host No. 8 Virginia on Saturday.

''Once you get in the league they know more about you and know all your warts,'' Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said.

The final ranked-on-ranked game should be a good one: No. 17 Kentucky at No. 23 Tennessee on Saturday.

The Wildcats (11-2) responded from a loss to UCLA in New Orleans by dominating rival Louisville 90-61 and held off Georgia 66-61 on Saturday.

The Vols (9-3) lost an eight-point lead in the final four minutes and fell in overtime 95-93 to Arkansas on Saturday, but managed to remain in this week's poll. The Razorbacks (11-2) moved back into the poll for the first time since 2014-15 at No. 22 this week and play at Mississippi State on Tuesday.

TOP-RANKED SPARTANS

Michigan State (14-1) moved into to No. 1 spot in AP Top 25 for the first time since 2015-16 this week.

The Spartans were leapfrogged by the Wildcats when Duke lost to Boston College and spent three weeks at No. 2, but moved atop the poll after previously top-ranked Villanova's loss to Butler.

Michigan State plays at Maryland on Thursday and goes to Ohio State on Sunday.

CLEMSON RISING

Clemson has been in a six-year NCAA Tournament drought, but could be ready to end that.

With four players scoring in double figures, the Tigers (12-1) have proven they can be players in the ACC race this season. Clemson has victories over South Carolina and Florida on its resume, and opened conference play with a 78-62 victory over North Carolina State.

The Tigers, who have won eight straight, play at Boston College on Wednesday and host Louisville on Saturday.
