January 18, 2018

**Saint Mary?s at Gonzaga**

-- As usual, first place in the WCC will be at stake Thursday night when Saint Mary?s visits Spokane to take on Gonzaga. Both schools are 6-0 in the conference play. As of late Wednesday night, most betting shops had Gonzaga (16-3 straight up, 9-6 against the spread) listed as a 7.5-point favorite after the number opened at 9.5. The total was at 152.5.

-- Mark Few?s team is unbeaten in 10 home games with a 5-2 spread record. The Bulldogs are 3-1 ATS in four games as single-digit favorites, 1-0 ATS in their only single-digit home ?chalk? spot.

-- Gonzaga has won six in a row while going 4-1-1 ATS since a 72-70 loss at San Diego State as a six-point favorite on Dec. 21. The Bulldogs are off a 75-65 win at San Francisco as 14-point road favorites. They inched ahead of the number only once with a 62-48 advantage with 9:53 remaining, but the Dons were the right side. Johnathan Williams led the ?Zags with 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot. Josh Perkins and Silas Melson chipped in 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Rui Hachimura finished with 10 points, eight boards and three blocks.

-- Gonzaga is ranked 13th in the latest Associated Press Top 25, 57th in the RPI Rankings and sixth at KenPom.com. Few?s club has a 4-2 record against the RPI Top 50 and a 4-3 mark versus the Top 100. The Bulldogs have neutral-court wins over Ohio St. (86-59) and Texas (76-71). They also own blowout victories vs. Creighton (91-74) at home and at Washington (97-70). The ?Zags? L?s came vs. Florida (111-105 in double overtime in Portland), vs. Villanova and at San Diego St.

-- Williams leads Gonzaga in scoring (14.1 points per game) and rebounding (7.2 RPG) and has blocked 1.1 shots per outing. Perkins is averaging 13.6 points, 5.5 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. The senior guard is shooting at a career-high 45.0 percent clip from long distance. Five Bulldogs are averaging double figures including Zach Norvell (12.2 PPG), Killian Tillie (11.8 PPG), Hachimura (10.7 PPG) and Melson (10.6 PPG). Melson has 27 steals, a 49/23 assist-to-turnover ratio and is hitting 90.6 percent of his free throws. Tillie is averaging 6.0 RPG and is making 55.3 percent of his field-goal attempts.

-- Saint Mary?s (17-2 SU, 7-7 ATS) leads the nation in field-goal percentage, shooting at a 52.4 percent clip. Randy Bennett?s team is ranked 12th in the country in 3-point accuracy (41.3%) and 15th in free-throw shooting (77.7%). The Gaels are ranked 35th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 65.4 points per game.

-- Saint Mary?s has won all six of its road games while going 5-1 ATS. The Gaels are playing their third road game in seven days after posting wins at Pepperdine (91-67) and at Santa Clara (81-57). They took the Waves behind the woodshed in Malibu this past Saturday, winning by 24 as 16-point road favorites. Jock Landale was the catalyst with 321 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Emmett Naar dished out 14 assists while Jordan Ford scored 20 points and dished out three assists without a turnover. Tanner Krebs knocked down all four of his 3-point attempts in a 16-point effort. Krebs also had seven rebounds, three assists and one steal.

-- Landale is averaging a double-double and paces Saint Mary?s in scoring (21.7 PPG), rebounding (10.3 RPG), FG percentage (65.3%) and blocks (0.8 BPG). Naar (11.2 PPG) is second in the nation in assists (9.4 APG) and sports a 178/54 assists-to-turnover ratio. He has a team-high 0.8 steals per game and is making 85.5 percent of his FTs. Calvin Hermanson is averaging 12.2 PPG and is splashing the nets at a 44.6 percent clip from 3-point range.

-- Saint Mary?s is an underdog for the first time this season. Bennett?s team is ranked No. 42 in the RPI Rankings. The Gaels have only faced one RPI Top-50 foe, losing an 83-81 decision to Georgia (RPI #41) in Fullerton, Calif. They?re 3-1 against the Top 100 with home wins over New Mexico State and Dayton, in addition to a win at BYU. Their other loss also came in Fullerton against Washington State.

-- Saint Mary?s is ranked 19th at KenPom.com. The Gaels have additional victories at California (74-63), at San Jose St. (79-61) and vs. Harvard (89-71) in Fullerton.

-- Saint Mary?s games were on a 5-0 ?under? run until the ?over? hit in its past two outings. The ?under? is 9-6 overall for the Gaels, 3-3 in their six road assignments.

-- The ?over? is 9-7 overall for the Gonzaga despite a 5-2 run for the ?under? in its last seven games. The ?over? is 5-2 for the Bulldogs at home.

-- The ?under? is 11-2 in the last 13 games of this rivalry, 18-4 in the last 22 games played at Gonzaga.

-- Gonzaga has won four in a row over Saint Mary?s both SU and ATS, with each victory coming by double-digit margins. The Bulldogs are 8-2 SU and 9-1 ATS in the past 10 encounters with the Gaels, who last won in this rivalry on Feb. 20 of 2016.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**UCLA at Oregon State**

-- UCLA (13-5 SU, 8-10 ATS) is in a third-place tie with USC in the Pac-12 standings, as the crosstown rivals are both 4-2 in league play. The Bruins are one game behind conference-leading Arizona and one-half game behind second-place Stanford.

-- As of early this morning, most books had UCLA installed as a two-point road favorite with a total of 148.

-- Steve Alford?s squad is 1-2 both SU and ATS in three road games. UCLA has won six of its last eight games, compiling a 5-3 spread record in the process. The Bruins dropped a 68-59 decision to Colorado this past Saturday as 11.5-point home favorites. Thomas Welsh made 9-of-10 FGAs and finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, but Aaron Holiday was held to 10 points and he had four assists compared to six turnovers. Holiday made just 4-o-13 shots from the field and 1-of-4 from 3-point range. Kris Wilkes had 10 points and nine rebounds, but he was 3-of-11 from the field and 1-of-6 from downtown.

-- Holiday leads UCLA in scoring (18.9 PPG), assists (5.2 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG), while Welsh (12.8 PPG) paces the Bruins in rebounding (10.7 RPG) and FG percentage (49.1%). Wilkes is averaging 13.7 points and 5.5 RPG, while Jaylen Hands (11.6 PPG) and Prince Ali (10.3 PPG) are also averaging in double figures.

-- UCLA is No. 49 in the RPI, going 2-3 versus the Top 50 and 3-5 against the Top 100. Alford?s team has home wins over Washington and Utah, and it beat Kentucky for a second straight year by an 83-75 score in New Orleans on Dec. 23.

-- Oregon State (10-7 SU, 7-10 ATS) has won eight of its 10 home games but has struggled to a 3-7 spread record. The Beavers are home underdogs for the second time, beating Oregon as 2.5-point home ?dogs in their first such spot.

-- Oregon State is No. 153 in the RPI with an 0-2 record against Top-50 foes and a 2-5 ledger versus Top-100 opponents. The Beavers have home scalps of Colorado (76-57) and Oregon (76-64). They?ve lost a pair of games by two points apiece, falling 77-75 at Arizona St. and 66-64 vs. Utah in Corvallis.

-- Oregon State is looking to avoid a three-game losing streak. After beating the Ducks on Jan. 5, the Beavers lost at Arizona and at ASU this past week. However, they have covered the spread in three consecutive games and four of their last five. OSU took the cash as a 15-point underdog in a 62-53 loss at Arizona and easily got the money in Saturday?s 77-75 loss in Tempe as a 12-point ?dog. Stephen Thompson Jr., the son of Syracuse?s sixth man when it advanced to the finals of the 1987 NCAA Tournament before getting knocked off by Bobby Knight?s third national title team at Indiana on Keith Smart?s last-second baseline jumper in New Orleans, scored a team-best 21 points for OSU. Thompson made 5-of-10 launches from beyond the arc and contributed three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Tres Tinkle added 18 points, 10 boards and four assists. Drew Eubanks and Ethan Thompson scored 11 points apiece. OSU allowed a 13-point lead at the under-12 television timeout to get away. The Beavers did a sensational defensive job on ASU star guard Tra Holder, who was held to four points on 1-of-9 shooting from the field. Holder (20.9 PPG) is the Pac-12?s leading scorer.

-- Tinkle, the head coach?s son who was averaging 20.2 points and 8.3 RPG before going down with a season-ending injury after playing only six games last year, is averaging team-bests in scoring (18.2 PPG), rebounding (7.4 RPG) and FT percentage (86.4%) and is tied for the team lead in assists (3.5 APG). Stephen Thompson Jr. (16.5 PPG, 3.5 APG) and Eubanks (13.3 PPG, 6.6 RPG) are also scoring in double figures.

-- The ?over? is 10-8 overall for the Bruins, 3-0 in their road contests.

-- The ?under? is 9-7-1 for OSU, 5-5 in their home games. The ?under? is 4-0-1 in the Beavers? past five games.

-- Fox Sports 1 will provide the broadcast at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- TCU announced Wednesday that sophomore guard Jaylen Fisher is out indefinitely due to a knee injury. Fisher is scheduled to have knee surgery today after sustaining the injury at Tuesday?s practice. The starting point guard for the Horned Frogs is averaging 12.3 points and 5.4 assists per game. Nevertheless, TCU snapped a three-game losing streak with last night?s 96-73 win over Iowa St. Vladimir Brodzianksy led the way with 26 points.

-- SMU picked up its first road win of the year last night when it captured an 83-78 win at Wichita State. The Mustangs won outright as 9.5 underdogs, hooking up money-line backers with a sweet +375 return (paid $375 on $100 wagers).

-- Alabama handed Auburn its first loss since Nov. 17 and ended the Tigers? 14-game winning steak Wednesday night at Coleman Coliseum. Even without star guard Collin Sexton (abdominal injury), Avery Johnson?s team won a 76-71 decision as a four-point home underdog. Freshman guard John Petty stole the show by exploding for a game-high 27 points on 8-of-13 marksmanship from long distance. Dazon Ingram made 10-fo-13 FTs and finished with 16 points for the Crimson Tide.

-- KeVaughn Allen finally busted out of a miserable slump in Florida?s 88-73 win over Arkansas as a 6.5-point home favorite. The former star at North Little Rock, Ark., had been held to seven points or fewer in four straight games and had scored in double figures only three times in UF?s last 10 games. Allen erupted for 28 points on the Razorbacks, draining 6-of-7 shots from 3-point land and 8-of-12 from the field. Jalen Hudson finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot. Hudson buried 4-of-8 triples and the Gators went 13-of-25 (52.0%) from downtown. Egor Koulechov had 12 points and eight rebounds. Mike Anderson?s team fell to 2-4 in the SEC play and 0-4 both SU and ATS on the road.

-- Florida senior center John Egbunu practiced Monday for the first time this season. Egbunu tore his ACL in a Valentine?s Day win at Auburn last season. Mike White told the media Tuesday that the big man?s timetable to return remains late January. Egbunu?s muscle and size make him a force as an interior defender, and that?s exactly what the Gators need down the stretch. They?ll take a 5-1 SEC record into Rupp Arena to face Kentucky on Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

-- UF is now No. 25 at KenPom.com and No. 40 in the RPI.

-- Middle Tennessee is a three-point road favorite tonight at Marshall. The Blue Raiders are undefeated in seven road games with a 4-2 spread record. Meanwhile, the Thundering Herd is 10-1 SU and 5-3 ATS at home. MTU has won five in a row over Marshall both SU and ATS with each victory coming by at least nine points. The ?under? has hit in five straight MTU games to improve to 11-3 overall.

-- Michigan has won nine of its last 10 games and is on an 11-4-1 ATS run in its past 15 outings. The Wolverines are favored by 3.5 tonight at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers, who are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games, are 10-1 SU and 7-2 ATS at home in Lincoln. Michigan has won all eight games between these schools since Nebraska joined the Big Ten. The Wolverines are 5-3 ATS in those victories, going 4-1 ATS in the past five encounters. The ?over? has hit in three straight Michigan-Nebraska games. Tip-off is slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network.

-- Washington is a 7.5-point underdog tonight at Utah. The ?under? has cashed in four straight games for the Huskies. UW has won six of its past eight games, including road wins at USC (88-81) and Washington St. (70-65). The Utes are 7-2 SU and 4-2 ATS at home. The ?under? is 6-2 in their last eight contests.

-- Check out the rest of tonight?s TV games here.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??..

13) Bill Belichick got his first NFL head coaching job in 1991, when he was 39; he interviewed 85 coaches for assistants? jobs that winter- the first one he hired?

Guy named Nick Saban. Wonder whatever happened to him?

12) Six of the top 21 college basketball teams lost Wednesday night. Been a weird year.

11) I see that they?re moving up the start of college basketball season next year, up three days to November 6, which will also be Election Day. They?re trying to get the start of college hoop out of football?s shadows? hopefully there won?t be any MAC football games on TV that Tuesday.

10) NBC television is advertising the Olympics a lot- one of the ads has an athlete saying how every kid?s dream is to be in the Olympics. I can honestly say, not once did I ever dream of being in the Olympics, especially the Winter Olympics. Good thing, since I was a lousy athlete, but my idea of fun isn?t slalom skiing or anything to do with cold weather.

9) Funny story on Twitter this week about how a Vikings fan named Sara Zeigler got so excited when Stefon Diggs caught that pass at the end of the game Sunday night, she jumped on her couch and landed on her remote control, which changed the station on the TV before Diggs scored, so she didn?t see the winning TD she was so excited about, until one of the 1,000 replays after the game.

Moral of story: Remote controls are very valuable; never jump on them.

There have been numerous stories about people waiting for the PAT to be tried/not tried after that Minnesota touchdown, since the pointspread hung in the balance. Had to be fun to be in Las Vegas sportsbook for that.

8) Philadelphia Eagles went for it on 4th down 26 times this year, most in the NFL- they made the first down/TD on 17 of those 26 tries.

7) Shohei Ohtani is both a pitcher and a hitter; the Angels? newest free agent acquisition has caused the folks at CBSSports.com some grief this winter, as they worked to figure out how Ohtani will be dealt with in the fantasy league website?s stats column.

Apparently the problem has been resolved; doesn?t sound like Ohtani will be in the lineup enough to merit his inclusion as a fantasy league hitter. Albert Pujols DH?s for the Angels, so it Ohtani is the DH, Pujols has to play first base? Not ideal.

6) Cavaliers 104, Magic 103? Cavaliers blew a 23-point lead but survived the dismal Magic. Cleveland is 16-5 at home, 3-17-1 against the spread.

5) Surprising stat: Of the last eight Stanley Cup champs, only one of the eight (?17 Penguins) finished higher than 15th in NHL in power play efficiency during the regular season.

4) Creighton F Martin Krampelj will miss the rest of the season with a major knee injury; he?s started every game for the Bluejays, scoring 11.9 ppg, grabbing 8 rebounds a game- a big loss.

3) When I was a little kid 100 or so years ago (late 60?s), they built a restaurant near our house? Valle?s Steakhouse. Place had this huge, Vegas-like sign in front of it, and it was a fancy place. Cloth napkins, all that.

Valle?s went out of business a long time ago; the building is a college now, Bryant & Stratton College, and I found out this week that Bryant & Stratton is starting a basketball program. They haven?t said where they?re going to play their games. If I remember right, Bryant & Stratton used to be called Albany Business College, and it was located in the city of Albany.

I?m not 100% sure that ABC became Bryant & Stratton, but one came to being when the other closed its doors.

2) Anyway, Albany Business College had a good junior college basketball team back in the day; Willard Rice was the coach? I went to a camp once run by Coach Rice and his son Steve. They had a team when I was in college (late 70?s)- they used to play the Albany JV team every year, so this is life coming full circle. From looks of things, Bryant & Stratton is a 4-year school now.

1) One last story about Valle?s Steakhouse; one summer, my dad?s family was in town to visit and we all went to Valle?s for dinner. Probably 12-14 people, so a big group. The waitress brings a lot of dinners out at the same time, and a small dish slipped at the top of her load? she went to grab it???and there was a very loud noise. Food scattered everywhere.

I?m pretty sure the waitress was fired before the dishes stopped spinning around; as an annoying 10-year old, I was sure it was the funniest thing I?d ever seen, even if I did have to wait to eat a while longer. It was tremendous- stuff like that didn?t happen at Carroll?s Hamburgers. my preferred place to eat when I was 10.

Friday's Wagers
January 18, 2018

**Indiana at Michigan State**

-- Michigan State (16-3 straight up, 11-8 against the spread) has failed to cover the spread in three straight games and is suddenly playing its worst basketball of the season. The slide started on Jan. 7 when the Spartans took woodshed treatment at Ohio State, losing 80-64 as 6.5-point road favorites. Three days later at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Tom Izzo?s team had to get a late free throw and a defensive stop on the last possession of regulation just to force overtime as a 22-point favorite vs. Rutgers. MSU would knock off the Scarlet Knights by a 76-72 count in OT. Then last Saturday (1/13/18), arch-rival Michigan came to Breslin and captured an 82-72 win as a 9.5-point underdog.

-- Michigan State led Michigan by three at intermission and held its biggest advantage (five) in the opening minute of the second half, but it was all Wolverines after that. Moritz Wagner dropped a game-high 27 points on the Spartans, who made only 3-of-13 (23.1%) attempts from 3-point range. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 19 points and blocked six shots in the losing effort. Miles Bridges finished with 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Cassius Winston had 11 points. Nick Ward was in foul trouble all day, contributing only four points and five rebounds in just 14 minutes of playing time.

-- Michigan State is No. 1 in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (35.0%) and is ranked 22nd in scoring ?D? (64.0 points per game). The Spartans are third in the country in FG percentage (51.7%), 15th in 3-point accuracy (41.2%) and 17th in scoring (85.2 PPG).

-- Michigan State is ranked ninth in the latest Associated Press Top 25 and No. 35 in the RPI Rankings. Izzo?s bunch is 1-3 versus the RPI Top 50 and 5-3 against the Top 100. The Spartans have neutral-court wins over North Carolina and UConn, in addition to home wins over the likes of Notre Dame, Nebraska and Maryland.

-- Bridges, a true sophomore forward, is averaging 16.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game. He has a 56/34 assist-to-turnover ratio. Ward (14.3 PPG, 1.6 BPG) leads the team in rebounding (7.5 RPG) and FG percentage (69.7%), while Joshua Langford (13.5 PPG) is draining 46.2 percent of his 3-balls. Winston (12.7 PPG) is hitting 52.4 percent of his treys and has a 130/48 assist-to-turnover ratio, while Jackson (11.5 PPG) paces MSU in steals (0.8 SPG) and blocks (3.2 BPG).

-- MSU has won 11 of its 12 home games while posting an 8-4 spread record. The Spartans are 7-3 ATS in 10 games as double-digit home favorites.

-- As of early Thursday night, most betting shops had the Spartans listed as 15.5-point favorites with a total of 140.

-- Indiana (11-7 SU, 9-9 ATS) has lost four of its five road games both SU and ATS. The Hoosiers failed to cover the number in their lone game as double-digit underdogs, losing 84-68 at Seton Hall as 11-point ?dogs. This is obviously their richest spot as ?dogs this year.

-- Archie Miller?s first IU squad is playing its best basketball of the season, winning three in a row and five of its past six both SU and ATS. The Hoosiers are off Sunday?s 66-46 win over Northwestern as three-point home favorites. Robert Johnson was the catalyst with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot. Josh Newkirk added 12 points. IU held the Wildcats to an abysmal 15-of-56 shooting performance (26.8%) from the field.

-- Indiana is No. 104 in the RPI Rankings, going winless in four games against Top-50 foes and 2-4 versus the Top 100. The Hoosiers beat Notre Dame on a neutral floor and won at Minnesota.

-- Junior forward Juwan Morgan leads IU in scoring (15.6 PPG), rebounding (7.4 RPG) and blocked shots (1.4 BPG). Morgan is making 59.3 percent of his FGAs. Johnson (13.6 PPG) is IU?s only other double-figure scorer.

-- Indiana lost sophomore power forward De?Ron Davis to a season-ending injury two weeks ago. Davis was averaging 9.6 points and 4.3 RPG while pacing the Hoosiers in FG percentage (61.5%) and blocks (1.5 BPG).

-- The ?under? is on a 5-1 run for IU in its last six games. Totals have been an overall wash (9-9) for the Hoosiers, but they?ve seen the ?under? go 4-1 in their five road assignments.

-- The ?over? is 11-7 overall for the Spartans, 9-2 in their home games. The ?over? is on a 7-2 run for -- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

**St. Bonaventure at Davidson**

-- As of early Thursday night, most books had Davidson (9-7 SU, 7-8 ATS) listed as a four-point favorite with a total of 145.

-- Davidson is in second place in the Atlantic 10 with a 4-1 record in league play, leaving it 1.5 games back of Rhode Island with its 6-0 mark in A-10 action. The Wildcats have won four games in a row and has covered the number in three straight.

-- Bob McKillop?s team is unbeaten in five home games with a 2-2 spread record.

-- Davidson dealt out a seal clubbing Sunday when it won 75-45 at Fordham as an eight-point road favorite. Jon Axel Gudmundsson led the way with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists compared to only one turnover. Gudmundsson drained 3-of-5 attempts from 3-point range. Kellan Grady added 14 points and three assists without a turnover, burying 4-of-5 launches from downtown. Oskar Michelsen and Peyton Aldridge were also in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

-- Davidson is No. 130 in the RPI, going 0-3 versus the Top 50 and 0-4 against the Top 100. All three defeats against Top-50 opponents came by double-digit margins, although the loss to New Mexico St. (RPI #55) on a neutral court was a 69-68 setback. The Wildcats have zero victories over opponents with an RPI of No. 189 or better. Furthermore, they?ve lost three games to team with an RPI of 187 or worse.

-- Davidson is led by Aldridge, the senior forward who is tops on his team in scoring (19.8 PPG), rebounding (6.9 RPG) and blocks (0.6 BPG). Gudmundsson (14.6 PPG) leads the Wildcats in assists (4.6 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG), with a 74/30 assist-to-turnover ratio. Grady (15.8 PPG) is shooting at a 40.2 percent from long distance.

-- St. Bonaventure (12-5 SU, 7-7 ATS) went 10-2 in non-conference play, but it is only 1.5 games out of the A-10 cellar with its 2-3 league record. Nevertheless, the Bonnies are still in a solid position (see where ESPN?s Joe Lunardi has them listed in Bonus Nuggets below) to get to their first NCAA Tournament since 2012.

-- Mark Schmidt?s squad is 4-3 SU and 3-4 ATS on the road. The Bonnies are 2-1 both SU and ATS in three contests as road underdogs.

-- St. Bonaventure has lost three of its past four games both SU and ATS, including Saturday?s 87-73 loss at Rhode Island as a 7.5-point underdog. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley scored 19 points apiece, while Courtney Stockard finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists.

-- St. Bonaventure is No. 45 in the RPI, compiling a 2-2 record against the Top 50 and a 4-3 mark versus the Top 100. The Bonnies own wins at Buffalo (RPI #34) and at Syracuse, in addition to neutral-court scalps of Maryland and Vermont.

-- Although he missed six games in November when St. Bonaventure went 4-2 SU, Adams has been making up for it since then. He?s averaging 18.5 points, 5.1 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Adams is shooting at a 52.9 percent clip from 3-point land and has made 83.8 percent of his FTs. Mobley (17.1 PPG) paces his team in assists (2.8 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG), and he?s also pulling down 4.9 RPG. Stockard is averaging 11.3 points and 5.5 RPG, while LaDarien Griffin (9.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG) leads the Bonnies in FG percentage (47.7%) and blocks (1.3 BPG).

-- The ?under? is 10-5 overall for the Wildcats, 3-1 in their home outings. They?ve seen the ?under? cash in five straight regardless of the venue.

-- The ?over? has hit in five consecutive games for the Bonnies to improve to 8-6 overall. However, they?ve seen the ?under? go 4-3 in their road contests.

-- ESPN will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Creighton junior forward Martin Krampelj has been enjoying a breakout campaign, making his loss to a season-ending ACL tear even more painful for Doug McDermott?s team. Krampelj was averaging 11.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game before sustaining the injury in Wednesday?s 80-63 home win over Seton Hall.

-- Joe Lunardi?s latest edition of ?Bracketology? was released Thursday and had the ACC (9) and SEC (8) composing 17 teams out of the 68-school field. The ?last four byes? included Notre Dame, Alabama, Boise State and Syracuse, while the ?last four in? were UCLA, Maryland, Middle Tennessee and Providence. The ?first four out? included USC, Georgia, Baylor and Houston, while the ?next four out? had SMU, St. Bonaventure, Kansas St. and Virginia Tech.

-- Wisconsin is a 4.5-point home favorite vs. Illinois on Friday at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on FS1.

No. 9 Michigan State bounces back and routs Indiana 85-57
January 19, 2018

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Miles Bridges made a 3-pointer and bounced on his toes with joy, enjoying a game he and Michigan State desperately needed.

Bridges scored 22 points to help the ninth-ranked Spartans respond to adversity with an 85-57 win over Indiana on Friday night.

The Spartans (17-3, 5-2 Big Ten) had a confidence-boosting performance after going from a top-ranked team to a reeling one. They were slumping after a 16-point loss at Ohio State, an overtime win over Rutgers and an 82-72 setback to Michigan at home.

''I was just trying to prove that we weren't soft and that we can compete with any team,'' Bridges said. ''We were trying to prove a point.''

Michigan State took control with an 18-0 run midway through the first half, led by as much as 23 and was ahead 42-23 at halftime.

''We were aggressive and played our game,'' Bridges said. ''We had a great sense of urgency.''

Nick Ward had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Cassius Winston had 10 points, eight assists and only one turnover and Jaren Jackson had 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks and for the Spartans.

The Hoosiers (11-8, 4-3) lost for the first time in four games, falling into a fourth-place tie with the Wolverines and Nebraska.

Indiana's Robert Johnson had 21 points and the rest of his teammates struggled offensively. Josh Newkirk scored 14, but missed 12 of 17 shots.

''If those two guys can continue to play well, I think we'll be OK,'' coach Archie Miller said.

The Hoosiers were held to 34 percent shooting.

''It wasn't a good offensive showing and they had a lot to do with it,'' Miller said.

FAMOUS FAN

Alex Rodriguez, who was in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show, attended the game. He wore an ''Izzone'' T-shirt while standing in the student section behind coach Tom Izzo, his staff and players.

''I've always been a big fan of Izzo,'' Rodriguez said.

Izzo became very fond of Rodriguez after hearing him talk to his team at its shootaround and in the locker room after the victory.

Rodriguez told the Spartans it bothers him that he ranks fifth on the all-time list with 2,287 career strikeouts.

''He talked about how many times he failed,'' Izzo recalled. ''What a great message for a team that came off a disappoint week of basketball.''

HE SAID IT

Izzo, like the school's board of trustees, is supporting university president Lou Ann Simon. Simon is facing growing calls to resign or to be fired by the board as part of the fallout from how the school handled allegations made against former employee Larry Nassar , who has pleaded guilty to multiple sexual assaults.

''There is no way I can waver in my support,'' Izzo said.

BIG PICTURE

Indiana: The Hoosiers have to hope Juwan Morgan's injury is not a long-term problem. He hurt his left ankle left in the first half, didn't return and left the locker room on crutches. One of the Big Ten's leaders in scoring, rebounding, steals and shooting was limited to two points on 1-of-5 shooting, three rebounds and one steal in 16 minutes.

''Even when Juwan was in there, we didn't have anything going,'' Miller said.

Miller said Morgan will be evaluated again when the team returned to Indiana.

Michigan State: The Spartans desperately needed to get their swagger back and they did, suddenly looking like the team that was ranked No. 1 two weeks ago.

UP NEXT

Indiana: Hosts Maryland on Monday.

Michigan State: Plays at Illinois on Monday, one of seven road games during the final 11 games in the regular season.

No. 18 Kentucky needs to fix mistakes
January 19, 2018

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) John Calipari warned the growing pains would be ugly for his youngest Kentucky squad.

It's been an annual caution from the coach, but this time he may not have been exaggerating. Kentucky has two losses in its last three Southeastern road contests.

But all is not lost.

The No. 18 Wildcats (14-4, 4-2) return home to face first-place Florida (13-5, 5-1) Saturday night with a chance to erase a one-game deficit to the Gators. And after playing four of its first six SEC games on the road, Kentucky gets to close January with three of its next four at Rupp Arena.

The immediate goal is correcting mistakes in a loss to South Carolina, a setback that Calipari said revealed how green his freshman really are.

''My issue right now is we're playing a really good team and we needed some time to focus on them, but at this point we can't,'' Calipari said Friday. ''If we get this right and it's not good enough, then we move on to the next game.

''But if we get it right, then I'm going to feel good. If I don't get it right, it doesn't matter. At some point this has got to change and we've got to focus.''

Though Calipari is accustomed to annually guiding a new group of talented yet inexperienced teenagers through high expectations, this particular group is his youngest with no upperclassmen among his regulars. The communication and unselfish play he has stressed was absent as Kentucky blew a 14-point, second-half lead in Tuesday's 76-68 loss at South Carolina .

Already short handed with point guard Quade Green sidelined for a third straight game because of a back issue, the Wildcats had three players foul out in the contest. Kentucky was also outrebounded 40-35 and recorded a season-low seven assists - with none from Hamidou Diallo or fellow guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Calipari said the performance was the first time the Wildcats truly resembled freshmen but isn't using youth as an excuse. If anything, he's pushing players shake their youthful bad habits along with the memory of that defeat.

Calipari ''just wants us to play harder the whole 40 minutes,'' forward PJ Washington said. ''We've been scrimmaging a lot more to get us in game-like situations. ... You can never really try too hard. You just have to keep that mindset and just move on to the next opponent.''

One bright spot for Kentucky's rotation was the debut of 6-foot-9 forward Jarred Vanderbilt after being sidelined with a left foot injury. The freshman had six points, five rebounds and a team-high three assists in 14 minutes against the Gamecocks, an encouraging start that has allowed the Wildcats to scrimmage more with him.

''He plays with a lot of energy,'' freshman forward Nick Richards said of Vanderbilt. ''We see it in practice a lot. He plays hard every possession. That could be one thing that could help us.''

Green's availability meanwhile remains a game-time decision. If nothing else, Calipari would like him back to have another shooter, not to mention with someone who communicates with teammates. On the other hand, Green's absence has allowed Gilgeous-Alexander to play the point alongside Diallo.

But after fouls and shaky play forced Kentucky to use a number of combinations at South Carolina, the mission this weekend is ensuring whatever lineup is out there plays more consistently to slow down a Florida squad seeking its eighth win in nine games.

''It just comes with your mental'' approach, Washington said. ''You just gotta be prepared every day in and every day out and just fight on a consistent basis, just get shots up in the gym and just continue to focus on you and getting better.''

Maryland 'not in a bad spot' for NCAA bid
January 19, 2018

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) Maryland has lost two players to injury, absorbed several disappointing defeats and remains without a signature victory to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

In spite of all this, the Terrapins (15-6, 4-4 Big Ten) are still in the hunt to secure a fourth consecutive trip to the sport's most important postseason tournament.

''We're getting better,'' coach Mark Turgeon declared in the wake of a 77-66 win over Minnesota on Thursday night. ''The guys know this our team, this is what we've got and we've been practicing really well.''

After losing by 30 points to Michigan State and by 22 at Ohio State in an eight-day span, Maryland missed the chance to make a statement against No. 23 Michigan on Monday, blowing a 10-point halftime lead and a 67-66 advantage with 3.2 seconds to go.

That 1-point defeat stung badly, but sticking with a ranked team on the road and then turning back Minnesota proved to be cause for optimism.

''Sitting at 4-4 in the league, we're not in a bad spot,'' said guard Kevin Huerter, the team's leading scorer. ''Every single game we're taking a step in the right direction, especially the last two games.''

Maryland has been in recovery mode since losing starter Justin Jackson (shoulder injury) and reserve forward Ivan Bender (knee) over a two-day span in late December. The depth still isn't there, but Turgeon is ready to make do with a nine-man rotation led by Huerter and backcourt mate Anthony Cowan Jr.

With 10 games left in the regular season, the Terrapins have plenty of time to move up a few notches in the Big Ten standings. The slate includes games against ranked teams Purdue, Michigan State and Michigan, along with matchups against resurgent Indiana and Nebraska.

''The great thing for is we've got an unbelievably hard schedule, which gives us an opportunity to beat teams that will be in the tournament,'' Turgeon said.

Five of those games - including Michigan State and Michigan - will be held in College Park, where the Terps are 12-1.

''Home games are totally different for us,'' center Michal Cekovsky said. ''We are trying to win every game, but especially at home.''

For Maryland to be successful, it must get scoring from a variety of players. Four players reached double figures against Minnesota, which made up for the lack of production from the reserves (nine points in 47 minutes).

The loss of Bender has provided more playing time for the 7-foot-1 Cekovsky, who scored 17 points and blocked four shots in 34 minutes.

''When he plays really well I think as a team we play really well, defensively and offensively,'' Huerter said. ''When he's playing strong, when he gets into the post and he's trying to make plays, it's just another dynamic teams have to prepare for.''

The Terrapins miss Jackson and Bender, but they're still good enough to make some noise in the Big Ten.

''They've got talent, they're well coached, they run good plays and doing well defensively,'' Minnesota coach Richard Pitino said. ''Sustaining Jackson and Bender getting hurt, I think it's still a tremendous team and a force to be reckoned with.''

Maryland has its flaws, most notably its 1-4 record on the road, but it is still capable of winning 20 games and playing into the middle of March.

''Coach said a couple of weeks into the season he didn't know if we had a tournament team,'' Cowan said. ''Even with the injuries, we're a tournament team now. We just have to keep getting better.''

'Canes try to shake slump at NC State
January 19, 2018

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) South Florida's flat topography is working in Jim Larranaga's favor, as the Miami Hurricanes coach noted while discussing his week in the wake of a deflating loss to Duke.

''I'm trying to mentally recover,'' Larranaga said Friday, ''so I'm no longer thinking about jumping off a cliff.''

After a pause, he smiled.

''I don't know if there are any cliffs here,'' he said.

There aren't, and Larranaga expects to make it to Sunday for No. 25 Miami's game at North Carolina State.

The Hurricanes (13-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) were ranked No. 6 in mid-December, but they're in danger of falling out of the Top 25 for the first time after losing four of their past seven. That includes the loss to No. 5 Duke on Monday , when the Hurricanes blew a 66-53 lead with eight minutes left.

Miami scored 16 consecutive points but later allowed the Blue Devils to score 18 in a row, and Larranaga said such extreme ups and downs have been a recurring problem.

''We're trying to simplify what we're doing right now so we can get a little more consistency,'' he said.

Larranaga and his assistants met for half an hour Thursday with guards Ja'Quan Newton, Bruce Brown and Dejan Vasiljevic to discuss the offense. All three players are trying to shake slumps.

Larranaga wants to make it easier for his team to adjust when opponents change defenses. Freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV found the game video hard to watch when the Blue Devils' switch to a zone stymied Miami.

''They were standing at one spot for 10 hours - that's what it felt like,'' Walker said. ''Their feet were basically glued to the court. We have to get them moving. We have to penetrate and pitch and make the right play.''

Guard Chris Lykes said the Hurricanes expect to see more zone because they've struggled against it.

''When teams go zone against us, we start shooting 3s and not necessarily getting in gaps and creating for each other,'' Lykes said.

Newton's dip in production at point guard has been part of the problem. The team's only senior starter is averaging 8.5 points per game, compared with 13.5 a year ago.

''He's not having the kind of year I'm sure he was expecting, or we were expecting,'' Larranaga said.

North Carolina State (13-6, 3-3 ACC) is coming off a win over Wake Forest . This month the Wolfpack have also beaten Clemson and Duke, two teams that defeated Miami.

They're averaging 90 points at home, but Walker, for one, is eager to play in Raleigh for the first time. The freshman is fond of ACC road games.

''The environment is a lot more intense - stronger, faster, louder,'' he said. ''Once you adjust to it, you kind of get going, and once you find that zone while you're away, it's by far one of the best feelings you get.''

Huskers hope to avoid another letdown
January 19, 2018

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Nebraska is out to its best start in conference play in 12 years, fresh off a 20-point win over No. 23 Michigan and looking like it has the makings of an NCAA Tournament team.

Fans must proceed at their own risk.

This is a program that's had fleeting success and a history of collapsing just when it looked as if it were on the verge of a breakthrough. The next month will show whether sixth-year coach Tim Miles' team is real or a mirage.

Signs point to the former after a 72-52 home win over the Wolverines on Thursday that was the Huskers' most lopsided over a ranked opponent since 2004.

''I don't think we'll be the last team to come out here and not come away with a win,'' Michigan coach John Beilein said. ''Nebraska is good, and I'm a believer. They have a lot of weapons. We've got a few teams in this league that are really elite, and they're one of those teams that is growing leaps and bounds every single day.''

Nebraska (14-7) has won five of its first eight Big Ten games, its best start in conference play since the 2005-06 team opened 5-3 in the Big 12. The Huskers are tied with Michigan for fifth place.

''It's where we hoped to be. It's what we thought we could do,'' Miles said. ''I told the guys I was proud of them but now we're going to expect you to keep doing it. I would hope we're in a good place. I think this is a five- or six-bid league, and I want to be one of those.''

A road upset of No. 22 Ohio State (16-4, 7-0) on Monday would make the Huskers 6-3 in league play for the first time since 1998-99 under Danny Nee. Nebraska finished that season 10-6 in the Big 12 and has had just one winning conference record since.

Nebraska has failed to gain traction under Miles in large part because key players have transferred. This season, however, incoming transfers have played major roles. James Palmer Jr. (Miami), Isaac Copeland (Georgetown) and Anton Gill (Louisville) are starters and graduate transfer Duby Okeke (Winthrop) has added depth.

Isaiah Roby, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, has been the biggest factor. A natural power forward, he has been playing the majority of his minutes at center. Roby scored a career-high 14 points against Michigan with three assists, two blocked shots and a steal.

''Roby as a `5 man' is a nightmare for a lot of teams,'' Beilein said. ''He can shoot 3s as well. He's very skilled. It's a great way to play when you have a skilled big guy who can play on the perimeter or inside.''

Nebraska's smaller lineup has been effective guarding the 3-point line, denying passes into the post and switching defensive assignments to counter opponent screens. The Huskers held their last two opponents to 19 percent shooting (7 of 36) on 3-pointers, and Michigan 6-11 forward Moritz Wagner was limited to just five shots in 32 minutes, with his only basket coming on a dunk.

Offensively, the Huskers have more options. Palmer, averaging 15.8 points, can hit the perimeter jumper and, with his quick first step, can also get to the basket. Copeland (12.3 ppg) is dependable around the hoop, point guard Glynn Watson can score from anywhere and Gill is shooting 46.6 percent on 3s.

The question is whether the Huskers can avoid a letdown. Since going on a late run that carried them to the NCAA Tournament in 2014, they've collapsed at the end of three straight seasons. They lost nine straight to finish 2015, nine of the last 11 to end the 2016 regular season, and eight of the last 10 in 2017.

Ohio State, at No. 19, is the highest-RPI opponent left on the regular-season schedule. No other future opponent was higher than No. 47 on Friday, and only two of the other nine were in the top 100.

The Huskers' best win coming into this week was in December against Minnesota, then No. 14 in The Associated Press poll and No 43 in the RPI. The win over Michigan (No. 30 RPI) was an attention-grabber.

''It was big for us,'' Roby said, adding that it gives Nebraska wins in seven of the last nine. ''We're going into Ohio State and Rutgers. We have a two-game road trip. It's going to be big to keep the momentum going.''

SC moving up in SEC hoop standings
January 19, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Early on South Carolina didn't look much like the Final Four team it was a year ago. Lately, though, the Gamecocks are have turned things around, both on and off the court.

New additions, a talented junior living up to potential and a relentless knack for overcoming problems have South Carolina making a move in the Southeastern Conference standings. The Gamecocks' turnaround includes a dramatic comeback from 14-points down in the second half to beat No. 18 Kentucky 76-68 earlier this week.

''I like this team,'' South Carolina coach Frank Martin said. ''Our guys are great. They're fun to coach.''

It didn't always look that way earlier this season.

The Gamecocks (12-6, 3-3 SEC) were the surprise of college basketball last March with their run to the Final Four, which included wins over Duke, Baylor and Florida. But the heart of that team - guards Sindarius Thornwell, Duane Notice and Justin McKie - were all seniors. In addition, McDonald's All-American P.J. Dozier, who would've been a junior this season, chose to enter the NBA draft.

During the summer, Dozier's expected replacement, Rakym Felder, was suspended from the program and left school after his second arrest in less than a year.

Martin was forced to rely on grad transfers like Kory Holden, Wesley Myers and Frank Booker to blend with returnees like Chris Silva and Maik Kotsar.

And when things got hard, Martin said his team often shrunk from the challenge because of a lack of leadership. They lost to rival Clemson and Old Miss and Missouri in a four-game stretch during the holidays that pointed toward a downward trend for the Gamecocks.

That's when things started to turn. Martin said a huge reason was Silva's emergence as a leader.

The 6-foot-9 junior forward had been a force before - he had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the NCAA win over Duke - but did it in a quiet way, content to let others lead. But with the Gamecocks 0-2 to start SEC play, Silva took charge in practice, both vocally and with his play, and led his team to a 71-60 win over Vanderbilt two weeks ago.

''Frank challenges me every day to be better,'' Silva said. ''I'm just doing what I'm asked to do.''

Since then, the Gamecocks have overcome challenges to win. They shot 27 percent in pulling off a road win at Georgia last week. On Tuesday night, South Carolina trailed Kentucky 54-40 with less than 13 minutes left. Instead of folding, Martin said, the Gamecocks found some leadership from Silva, Myers and Booker.

''We were trying to let it go, trying to hang our heads again, but those three guys said, `No, not tonight,' and a lot of credit to them for doing that,'' Martin said.

The coach is unsure if the surge will continue.

The next test comes Saturday when South Carolina plays No. 21 Tennessee (12-5, 3-3) on Saturday night.

Vols coach Rick Barnes prepped teams to go against Martin when both were in the Big 12 Conference; Barnes at Texas and Martin at Kansas State.

''I think South Carolina plays the way Frank wants his teams to play,'' Barnes said. ''They're no different than everybody else (in that) sometimes it takes teams a little bit longer to totally figure it out.''

One factor that's helped along with lifting the team's spirits has been the reinstatement of Felder and the addition of Brian Bowen Jr ., the one-time suspended Louisville recruit who signed at South Carolina earlier this month. Neither will play this season - Martin is holding Felder out this season and Bowen must adhere to NCAA transfer rules and be reinstated by the governing body - but the two have been at practices and helping the team improve.

''We can't appreciate them enough,'' said Booker, who had played at Oklahoma and Florida Atlantic before South Carolina. ''We just hope they keep bringing that energy.''

It's all led to a flurry of success that has the Gamecocks finally living up to last year's Final Four team.

''You can see,'' Booker said, ''that we're starting to gel a little bit.''

K-State overcoming issues and winning
January 19, 2018

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) Kansas State dropped back-to-back games to highly ranked teams, lost one of its top players to a foot injury and experienced a heartbreaking defeat to bitter rival Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse.

In other words, the perfect setup for routing the No. 4 team in the country.

The Wildcats rebounded from their lousy start to Big 12 play by shutting down Sooners star Trae Young, coalescing behind Barry Brown and freshman Cartier Diarra, and rolling to an 87-69 victory on Tuesday that has pushed coach Bruce Weber's team back into the NCAA Tournament picture.

Not to mention gave them a groundswell of confidence.

''I knew we would be fine. I know this team. I know these guys,'' Brown said. ''Nobody lost faith in anybody. We're still a good team and we showed it. We've dealt with losses before, even in past seasons we had some tough losses, and we were able to bounce back. I knew our guys would be fine.''

Better than fine. They were downright excellent.

Brown poured in 24 points, the third time in four games he's had at least that much. Diarra had 16 points, and has averaged 17 in the three games since point guard Kamau Stokes went down. And a team that has become known for defense rather than offense over the years eclipsed 80 points for the second time in three games.

The fact that the defense was still there against Oklahoma made it more impressive.

Young was averaging an NCAA-best 30.1 points during his freshman campaign, but he was held to 20 on 8-for-21 shooting. It was his lowest-scoring game since his collegiate debut. Young also committed 12 turnovers against six assists, and Oklahoma had 20 as a team.

''They did a great job of being ready to play out of the game, and we didn't do so well,'' Young said afterward. ''But it's going to be a tough one every night out, so we just have to get better.''

In fact, the Sooners acknowledged Kansas State's defense was the best they'd seen all season.

''Bruce has done a fantastic job,'' said Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger, who played and coached at Kansas State. ''He's highly respected, his teams are always prepared. They compete really hard. A tough, tough league. It's not going to be ever easy. He's been in tournaments - he's done a fantastic job.''

Weber has done it against long odds, too.

He got the Wildcats (13-5, 3-3) back to the NCAA Tournament after a two-year lapse a season ago, but their 21-14 record left plenty to be desired. A steady drumbeat grew during the season that Weber should be fired, though new athletic director Gene Taylor gave him a contract extension instead.

It's turned out to be the right decision. Weber has kept a team with just two seniors, neither major contributors, focused in a league where a .500 record should have them NCAA-bound again.

They face No. 24 TCU on Saturday, their third straight ranked opponent and fifth in six games.

''It's all about the players. They're the ones that made the decision to compete,'' Weber said. ''They could have easily put their heads down, but they've come back and played at a really high level.''

The potential has always been there. The Wildcats took Arizona State to the wire in a 92-90 loss during a tournament in Las Vegas, and wins over Vanderbilt and Washington State were solid. The big blip was a loss to Tulsa on a night where nothing really went right.

Otherwise, their three league losses have been to ranked teams.

''We're flowing really good right now,'' said forward Dean Wade, their second-leading scorer, who's had back-to-back 20-point games. ''Just got to keep it going through the Big 12.''

GT-UNC game headlines ACC action
January 19, 2018

A look at the upcoming week around the Atlantic Coast Conference:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND:
Georgia Tech at No. 15 North Carolina. The Yellow Jackets' visit to Chapel Hill marks the best game on a weekend lineup bereft of matchups of Top 25 teams. Georgia Tech (10-7, 3-1) stumbled through the nonconference schedule before finding themselves, winning three of their first four ACC games and reeling off four straight wins to move into a tie for third place heading into Thursday night's home game against No. 2 Virginia. The Tar Heels (14-4, 3-2) held off Clemson and have won three in a row to follow a two-game losing streak.

LOOKING AHEAD: Virginia is starting a stretch in which five of seven games are on the road, with one of the few home games in that stretch coming next Tuesday night when Clemson visits in the league's next matchup of Top 25 teams. The Cavaliers have the best road record in the ACC during the past six years, going 27-19 away from Charlottesville.

PLAYER TO WATCH: North Carolina State big man Omer Yurtseven is putting up some big numbers . Entering Thursday night's game against Wake Forest, he's averaging 17 points and 6.3 rebounds over his last three games. He has a team-best 33 blocked shots, is second on the team with a 6.7 rebounding average and has made 11 of 17 3-pointers (64.7 percent).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: One of the key advanced statistics indicates the ACC is home to some strong defenses. According to Ken Pomeroy's efficiency ratings, six of the top 14 defenses in Division I are in the ACC. Virginia, as expected, ranks No. 1 while Miami is seventh. Four ACC schools - Syracuse, North Carolina, Clemson and Louisville - hold down Nos. 11-14.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE:
Second-ranked Louisville is continuing its roll through conference play. The Cardinals (19-0, 5-0) routed then-No. 2 Notre Dame by 33 points on their way to earning the highest ranking in program history. Looming large is a visit to 12th-ranked Florida State (16-2, 4-1) on Sunday.

SEC leaders lose, standings wide open
January 19, 2018

A look at the upcoming week around the Southeastern Conference:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: Florida at No. 18 Kentucky: Although Kentucky is the only Top 25 team in this matchup, Florida is the program currently atop the SEC standings. The Gators will try to maintain their SEC lead Saturday by winning for the eighth time in their last nine games. Kentucky is 11-0 at home this year but has split its last four games overall while struggling to protect leads. Kentucky blew a nine-point lead Jan. 6 in a 76-65 loss at No. 21 Tennessee and squandered a 14-point edge Tuesday in a 76-68 defeat at South Carolina .

LOOKING AHEAD: While the SEC undoubtedly has more good teams than usual and consequently should get more NCAA Tournament bids, the league lacks a true front-runner. Florida won its first four conference games and then suffered a surprising loss at Mississippi . No. 17 Auburn is the highest-ranked team in the conference, but its 14-game winning streak ended Wednesday with a loss at Alabama . The Crimson Tide played that game without injured leading scorer Collin Sexton. All three SEC teams in the Top 25 - Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee - lost this week. The SEC should have a wide-open race for the conference title, as five teams have two conference losses or less: Florida (13-5, 5-1), Auburn (16-2, 4-1), Kentucky (14-4, 4-2), Alabama (12-6, 4-2) and Missouri (13-5, 3-2).

NUMBERS GAME: Missouri's 59-55 victory over No. 21 Tennessee on Wednesday marked the first time the Tigers had beaten a ranked team since a victory over No. 18 UCLA on Dec. 7, 2013. ... Auburn's 14 straight victories had given the Tigers the nation's longest active winning streak before they fell to Alabama on Wednesday. ... South Carolina is 11-0 when it scores at least 70 points and just 1-6 when it fails to reach that mark. ... The SEC has eight teams ranked in the top 40 of the NCAA's RPI rankings, including No. 9 Auburn, No. 12 Kentucky, No. 14 Tennessee, No. 25 Arkansas, No. 26 Alabama, No. 33 Missouri, No. 36 Florida and No. 37 Texas A&M.

IMPACT PERFORMER: South Carolina was picked to finish 11th in the conference one year after reaching the Final Four, but junior forward Chris Silva is making sure the Gamecocks (12-6, 3-3) stay competitive and challenge for an NCAA bid again. Silva has put together two 27-point performances in South Carolina's last four games. The first came Jan. 6 in a 71-60 victory over Vanderbilt . Silva scored 27 again to go along with eight rebounds as South Carolina rallied to beat Kentucky. He also had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists Saturday when the Gamecocks won 64-57 at Georgia .

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE: No. 3 Mississippi State is one of only three remaining undefeated Division I teams along with No. 1 Connecticut and No. 2 Louisville. The Bulldogs face their biggest test of the season thus far Sunday at No. 6 Tennessee. Sunday's matchup ends a demanding four-game stretch for the Lady Vols and marks their return home after three straight road matchups with No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 10 South Carolina and No. 5 Notre Dame. Tennessee beat South Carolina but fell in overtime at Texas A&M and blew a 23-point lead in a loss at Notre Dame.

Saturday's Best Bets
January 19, 2018

Saturday College Basketball Best Bets

Now that we've got no more collegiate or professional football games to handicap each Saturday, it's time to fully shift our focus over the the college basketball landscape as we start to head down the road towards March Madness 2018.

Conference play has been in full swing for a few weeks now and in another few weeks we will get plenty of revenge game scenarios to discuss.

But for now it's all about another loaded card on Saturday and with a lot of the Top 25 teams hitting the court tomorrow, let's look at a few games that have peaked my interest from a betting perspective as a couple of those ranked teams close to that #25 spot might run into some trouble on the road.

#22 Ohio State (-9) vs. Minnesota ? 12:00 p.m. ET

Ohio State comes into this contest on a six-game SU winning streak, going 5-1 ATS during that span and currently riding a 5-0 ATS run. That streak includes an impressive 80-64 win against Michigan State a couple of weekends ago and the Buckeyes have been riding that confidence ever since. But beating the likes of Northwestern, Rutgers, and Maryland since then isn't exactly a Murderer's Row of opponents, and while Minnesota isn't classified as one of the Big 10's elite squads, they are going to be a tough out in this game.

This isn't going to be a true home game for the Gophers as it will be contested at Madison Square Garden as part of the Big 10's Super Saturday. However, this is the third time in less than a week that Ohio State has played away from home and while it's worked out great so far, eventually all that time away from home catches up to collegiate teams. Throw a nearly double-digit spread on top of that for them to cover against a Gophers team that needs to start winning conference games to climb up the standings, and bettors should expect a feisty Minnesota team to keep this close throughout.

Ohio State is just 6-20 ATS in their last 26 games at a neutral site as a program and this is quite frankly too many points to lay in a spot like this.

Best Bet: Minnesota +9

#24 TCU vs. Kansas State (-3) ? 4:00 p.m. ET

Fresh off a dominant 87-69 home win against #4 Oklahoma earlier this week, the Kansas State Wildcats are back at it on Saturday, again hosting a Big 12 rival ranked in the Top 25. TCU currently sits at 24th in the rankings and are coming off a double-digit win themselves (96-73 vs Iowa State), but that was just their first win in their last four games as they went battled the best of the best in the conference of late. TCU is just 2-4 SU in their last six games overall, but three of those contests went to OT (1-2 SU in OT), so it's clear they can hang with anyone in this conference.

However, this is not a team I can trust away from home even though all three of those OT games came in road Big 12 games, as this is a brutal spot for the Horned Frogs and I'm always a big proponent of taking the lower ranked/unranked teams laying small chalk at home.

Not only is K-State in that spot as home favorites, they are riding high after that upset victory this week and catch a TCU team that may be looking past them and ahead to their big home showcase game on Monday night vs West Virginia. To me, that's almost a perfect storm of a spot to fade TCU here.

Kansas State has already dealt with the conferences powerhouses here at home as they fell by 8 to West Virginia (as +1.5 home dogs), beat Oklahoma State by 4 (-3 home favorites) and beat up Oklahoma by 18 as 2-point underdogs earlier this week. The back half of Kansas State's schedule will be rough when they've got to visit most of those squads, but for now, I've got no quarrels about riding their wave of momentum at home as they pull even with TCU in overall season record at 14-5 SU after this one.

Best Bet: Kansas State -3

Saturday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) There is too much anger and bad news in the world, so I give you this:

Former NFL running back Warrick Dunn?s mom was a policewoman in Baton Rouge; she was killed by a gunman when Dunn was 18. Dunn went on to star at Florida State, and then played for 12 years in the NFL.

To honor his late mother, Dunn started a foundation that built homes with Habitat for Humanity for single-parent families. He is still doing that.

Last month, Dunn?s foundation gave away their 158th and 159th homes, one in Detroit, one in Atlanta. You don?t think this makes a difference?

12) In 2006, Dunn?s foundation built a home in Gainesville, Ga; the family had an 11-year old boy who you may have heard of. Deshaun Watson, now QB for the Houston Texans.

Who knows what would?ve happened to that family if they hadn?t been given a home in 2006. Sometimes all people need is a chance.

11) 106 college football players are leaving school early to apply for the NFL Draft- there were 74-95-95 such players the last three years. 26 of the players come from SEC schools, 24 more from ACC schools.

Florida State, LSU, Texas all lost six players each.

10) If JD Martinez can?t play ball for $25M a year, then the Red Sox should tell him to take a hike and Martinez should go find a real job, where he won?t make $25M a year.

Enough already; he?s had only two great years and will be 31 in August. Martinez has played more than 123 games in a season twice in his career.

9) They re-sodded the middle of the field in Philadelphia this week, after lot of players slipped in last week?s game. Re-sodding a field in the Northeast in January can be dicey, but Doug Pederson said the field is in great shape, so we?ll take his word for it.

8) There are murmurs on the Interweb that Tom Brady has multiple stitches in his passing hand, which is why he wore gloves to his news conference Friday.

Betting line has dropped from 9 to 7.5 points; if somehow Brady didn?t play Sunday, the line with Brian Hoyer playing QB for New England would be Patriots, -2.

7) Alabama hired former New Mexico coach Mike Locksley as its offensive coordinator; he was OC at both Illinois and Maryland, but is considered a better recruiter than a tactician.

6) Michigan State 85, Indiana 57? For some reason Alex Rodriguez was at this game last night, sitting in the student section, wearing an ?Izzone? t-shirt. He?s been on TV a lot lately; he was at a Laker game with JLo and the kids, and was also at another game with his famous wife. Haven?t heard if ARod is going to get the Sunday Night Baseball gig on ESPN, but he?d be good at it.

5) Eagles-Jaguars will meet in London next fall; game could be a Super Bowl rematch, if both underdogs win Sunday. NFL fans in London deserve better games than they gotten recently.

4) NFL has an interesting way of staying in the news 24/7; ESPN started the other day with Mel Kiper?s first mock draft for 2018? he had the Browns taking Wyoming QB Josh Allen with the #1 pick, and then the Giants taking UCLA QB Josh Rosen with the #2 pick.

3) Le?Veon Bell showed up five minutes before the END of the Steelers? walk-through the day before their playoff game, which may be part of why some of the limited partners in the team want a coaching change. Apparently he wasn?t the only player who had a trouble with being on time, and also an assistant coach or two was in that group.

Can remember Troy Aikman telling Joe Buck in an interview program how he retired from the NFL because discipline on the Cowboys slipped badly under Barry Switzer, and it drove him nuts. Aikman was a perfectionist, and he couldn?t stand sloppy preparation.

2) Have you seen the commercial on TV where the guy in the baseball cap adopts a dog at the shelter and brings him home in his truck? Didn?t notice until about the 70th time it was on, but the guy who adopts the dog has an artificial left leg. Just noticed it, thats all.

1) I?ve been scolded by some for talking about politics on here, but I will say this: if the government shuts down, then no politician should receive a penny of pay until it starts up again, and then no retroactive paychecks. If you want to get paid, do your damn job.
