Hall's 25 lead No. 3 Virginia past NC State 68-51

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Virginia's lead was still 11, but North Carolina State was trying to rally and a sense of unease was growing at John Paul Jones Arena. There were eight minutes to play, and the Wolfpack were on an 11-2 run.

For Devon Hall, that meant time to do something.

He got the ball on the right baseline, drove hard and laid it in. Thirty seconds later, after a turnover, he scored on another drive, was fouled and converted the three-point play, allowing the third-ranked Cavaliers to feel a little better, up 52-36, in a 68-51 victory Sunday night.

''I thought he righted the ship,'' coach Tony Bennett said.

A fifth-year senior and one of three captains. Hall saw it more as doing his job.

''I've been here for five years and so that's the time where a leader steps up,'' he said after scoring a career-best 25 points.

Kyle Guy added 17 points and Isaiah Wilkins had 10 for the Cavaliers (16-1, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who were unranked to start the season. Virginia also has won 11 straight regular-season meetings against the Wolfpack.

Hall finished 7 for 9 from the field, including 4 of 5 on 3-pointers, in topping his previous high of 20 points.

''Devon, he certainly answered when it got to those points,'' Bennett said. ''He played a heck of a game.''

Torin Dorn scored 16 points to lead N.C. State (12-6, 2-3), which arrived with a 3-0 record against ranked teams. The Wolfpack has beaten the No. 2 team twice - Arizona on Nov. 22 and Duke on Jan. 6 - and was coming off a 78-77 victory against No. 19 Clemson, but they had a difficult time getting much going against the nation's top defense.

N.C. State scoring leader Allerik Freeman (15.2 points per game) did not score in 29 minutes, missing all five of his shots from the field.

The Wolfpack allowed Virginia to convert 8 of 14 3-point shots, including 5 of 9 in the second half.

''I thought we did a tremendous job early in the game of running them off the line. Not so much in the second half,'' first-year Wolfpack coach Kevin Keatts said. The Cavaliers, who attempted 27 3s in their last game against Syracuse, were 3 for 5 in the first 20 minutes.

Virginia led 30-20 at the break and quickly built its margin to 37-20 in the opening minutes after halftime. The lead grew as high as 21.

SALT LICKS

Virginia center Jack Salt is an imposing physical presence well known for setting sturdy screens. He did it twice against the Wolfpack.

In the second half, his midcourt screen on Markell Johnson drew roars from the crowd when shown on replay. A few minutes later, Salt set another one and, although he appeared stationary, was whistled for a foul. It's the same way in the Cavaliers' practices,'' Bennett said.

''You hear some spines cracking and he realigns them with some back screens and he'll screen you hard, but I think our guys' heads are on a swivel,'' Bennett said, noting that the junior from New Zealand generally stays within the rules. ''When you're playing defense and Jack's on offense, you're aware of where he is and trying to beat the screens because he'll lay you out. He'll get you.''

BIG PICTURE

N.C. State: The Wolfpack does a good job of forcing turnovers, ranking second behind Virginia in turnover margin with a plus 4.18 (Virginia's is plus 5.19). The Cavaliers matched their season-high with 14 turnovers, but N.C. State committed 15 and was outscored off those mistakes 22-17.

Virginia: Virginia's defensive focus increasingly appears to frustrate teams with its consistency, eventually leading to forced shots late in the shot clock. The Wolfpack had several of those, as well as a few 30-second violations and finished 23 for 56 (41.1 percent) against the nation's top field goal percentage defense.

UP NEXT

The Wolfpack returns home to face Wake Forest on Thursday night.

Virginia goes on the road for just the second time in its last nine games as it plays at Georgia Tech on Thursday.

It does not get much bigger than this for ESPN?s Big Monday double-header of betting action in college basketball.

The early game pits two of the top teams in the ACC against one another with Duke going on the road to face Miami. Later in the Big 12, Kansas will square off against West Virginia in Morgantown.

No. 7 Duke at No. 18 Miami, FL. (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Duke -3, 154.5

Betting Matchup

Duke should remain secure in the top 10 of the national rankings this week following routine romps over Pittsburgh on the road last Wednesday and Wake Forest at home on Saturday both straight-up and against the spread as a heavy double-digit favorite on the closing betting line. The total stayed UNDER in both of those wins and it has stayed UNDER in three of the Blue Devils? last three games. They are currently 15-2 SU on the year with a 10-6 record ATS, including a 2-3 start ATS in ACC play.

Freshman forward Marvin Bagley III continues to tear things up for Duke with 30 points or more in three of his last four starts. He is averaging a team-high 22.5 points per game while also leading the way in rebounds with 11.7. The Blue Devils have five players scoring at least 12 PPG as part of a 93.2-point scoring average that is ranked second in the nation. They are also ranked second in both assists (19.9) and rebounds (44.1) per game.

The Hurricanes come into Monday night?s showdown at 13-3 SU and 8-6 ATS after dropping two of their last three games both ways. They are just 2-4 ATS in their last six games with the total going OVER in three of their last five outings. Saturday?s 72-63 loss to Clemson as 5 ?-point road underdogs went OVER the 133-point closing line. Miami returns home on Monday night with an even 2-2 record ATS in four previous home games this season.

Guards? Lonnie Walker and Anthony Lawrence each scored 16 points against Clemson with freshman Chris Lykes adding 13 points off the bench, but Miami could never overcome a four-point deficit at the half. The Hurricanes are way down the list in Division I when it comes to scoring with 73.1 PPG, but they remain one of the top defensive teams in the nation with a points-allowed average of 60.7.

Betting Matchup

Following a loss to Texas Tech to start the New Year, Kansas has won its last three Big 12 games SU including a tight 73-72 victory against in-state rival Kansas State on Saturday as a 12 ?-point home favorite. The Jayhawks also failed to cover in a five-point victory at home against Iowa State as 16-point favorites as part of a sketchy 4-6 record ATS over their last 10 games. The total stayed UNDER 150 points against Kansas State after going OVER in their previous four games.

While Kansas has not been blowing the doors off the lesser competition it has faced so far in conference play, it remains one of the most potent scoring teams in the nation with an average of 85.8 PPG. Senior guard Devonte? Graham scored 23 points in Saturday?s win and his 18.4-point scoring average is the highest among five Jayhawks with 10 or more points a night.

The Mountaineers? run to the top of the national rankings has been put on hold following Saturday?s 72-71 loss to No. 8 Texas Tech as 4 ?-point road underdogs. It was their first loss in Big 12 play following four SU wins as part of an overall record of 15-2. After covering in that loss, West Virginia is an even 7-7 ATS with the total staying UNDER in its last four outings. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of 16 games this year.

Senior guard Jevon Carter led all scorers in Saturday?s loss with 28 points while going 5-for-9 from three-point range. The Mountaineers? leading scorer (16.8 PPG) has been inconsistent in conference play with a combined 11 points in recent victories against Kansas State and Baylor. West Virginia, as a team, is averaging 82.1 PPG and shooting 43 percent from the field.

College basketball Monday betting primer and odds

Bill Self and his Jayhawks are 0-4 straight up in their last four trips to Morgantown and 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 games against Bob Huggins and the West Virginia Mountaineers.

It?s a big day Monday for college hoops fans with top ranked teams squaring off in important conference games that could go a long way in impressing the selection committee come March.

Here are some betting tidbits on the three biggest games:

Duke Blue Devils at Miami Hurricanes (+4)

The biggest challenge for Miami will be keeping pace offensively with the Blue Devils. Duke ranks first in all of college basketball in offensive efficiency with 1.22 points per possession and the team averages 93.2 points per game on 51.1 percent shooting from the field.

Duke?s defense is dreadful but the Hurricanes don?t have nearly as much fire power as their opponent. Miami?s leading scorer, Dewan Huell, averages just 13.6 points and its star freshman, Lonnie Walker, averages just 8.6 points per game.

The Over is 12-3 in Duke?s 15 lined games this season.

Kansas Jayhawks at West Virginia Mountaineers (-7.5)

Kansas isn?t an underdog too often in Big 12 games and this is its largest dog tag since February 2004 when oddsmakers had the team getting the same 7.5 points on the road against Texas.

Close observers of the Jayhawks wouldn?t gripe about this spread though. Coach Bill Self is dealing with a dearth of talent the likes of which hoop heads in Lawrence haven?t seen in more than a decade. Star recruit Billy Preston is still ineligible to play leaving the Jayhawks with just eight scholarship players on their roster.

Point guard Devonte Graham has played 190 out of the 200 total minutes of game play in the Jayhawks? first five Big 12 games.

?I?m trying to rest him, but right now we can?t play without him,? Self told reporters the Saturday before last. ?This might be the hand we?re dealt and the hand he?s dealt all year long. I hate to say that we might need to play zone or run a different offense so he can rest some when he?s on the court. He?s worn out.?

The Jayhawks are 0-4 straight up in their last four trips to West Virginia and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against WVU.

Maryland Terrapins at Michigan Wolverines (-7)

Michigan is coming off its first double-digit win at MSU since 1997, so there might be a bit of a letdown here in this spot. The Wolverines improved to No. 19 in the nation in defensive efficiency ? something Big Blue supporters aren?t accustomed to seeing. Michigan finished 172nd in the same stat category last season.

The season-ending injury to sophomore forward Justin Jackson hasn?t slowed down the Terps. Maryland is 7-2 straight up and 4-2 ATS since losing Jackson. The Over is 8-2 in the Terps? last 10 lined games.

Trent, No. 5 Duke use 18-0 burst to rally past No. 25 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) Gary Trent Jr. scored a season-high 30 points and No. 5 Duke needed less than three minutes to erase a 13-point second-half deficit, scoring 18 consecutive points to overtake No. 25 Miami 83-75 on Monday night.

The Blue Devils scored 15 points in only six possessions to rally, and the comeback included a trio of 3-pointers by Trent. He shot 9 for 14, including 6 for 9 from beyond the arc.

Duke (16-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) extended its winning streak against ranked teams to seven games, including four this season. Miami (13-4, 2-3) lost at home for the first time this season.

Marvin Bagley III had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who shot 55 percent and won despite tying a season high with 19 turnovers. They committed none in the final 10 minutes as they rallied.

Lonnie Walker IV finished with 19 points for Miami. Dewan Huell added 18 points and 13 rebounds.

NO. 10 KANSAS 71, NO. 6 WEST VIRGINIA 66

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Svi Mykhailiuk scored 17 points, including 12 over the final seven minutes, and Kansas roared back from a big deficit to beat West Virginia.

Devonte Graham added 16 points and Udoka Azubuike scored 10 for the Jayhawks (15-3, 5-1 Big 12).

Kansas has won four straight and broke a four-game losing streak in Morgantown to West Virginia (15-3, 4-2). The Mountaineers have lost two straight for the first time this season.

Sagaba Konate had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for West Virginia. But he didn't score over the final seven minutes. Esa Ahmad added 15 points and Jevon Carter scored 14.

NO. 23 MICHIGAN 68, MARYLAND 67

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman made two free throws with 1.2 seconds left, lifting Michigan over Maryland.

Kevin Huerter connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer on the previous possession for the short-handed Terrapins.

Moritz Wagner had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (16-4, 5-2), and reserve Jordan Poole had 11 points.

The Wolverines went ahead by 10 with 5:50 to go and yet barely did enough to win against a team with just eight healthy players on scholarship.

Maryland's Anthony Cowan scored 24 points, Huerter had 12 on 4-of-11 shooting and Darryl Morsell added 10 points.

13) I?ve never coached football, I?m not qualified to analyze play calls or to think I know more than NFL coaches. Guess what? Neither are 99% of writers around the country who are killing the Falcons or Steelers coaches for their play calling this weekend.

Someone texted me Sunday night: ?What did you think of the Pittsburgh play calls??

I answered: ?They didn?t work.?

It is easy to criticize the Steelers for running a sweep on 4th and 1, but if the guy runs for a TD on that sweep, then Todd Haley is a play-calling genius.

12) Sad day for Pittsburgh Pirate fans; Bucs traded Andrew McCutchen for P Kyle Crick, some international pool money and a prospect. The financial realities of small market teams reared their ugly head here; McCuthen will make $14.8M this year, then he?ll be a free agent.

McCutchen is 31 and is still very productive, but with Gerrit Cole getting dealt to Houston, the Pirates are in a rebuild, and McCutchen wouldn?t re-sign with a losing team anyway, so Pirates got something for him. As an A?s fan, I know days like this suck for the team that deals its star.

Crick allowed only 22 hits in 32.1 IP (30 games) out of the Giants? bullpen LY.

11) Fact that surprised me: Drew Brees is the only QB to start a Super Bowl who went to high school in Texas. That will change Sunday, since Case Keenum/Nick Foles are both from Texas.

10) Final Four of the NFL: Tom Brady and his five Super Bowl rings, then Blake Bortles, Keenum and Foles, who before this month, were a combined 0-1 in NFL playoff games.

9) Last four years, favorites are 7-1 vs spread in conference championship games.

8) James Madison?s basketball team is 17-38 the last two years, 7-17 in CAA games, after they fired Matt Brady, who was 139-127 in eight years at JMU, 68-74 in CAA games.

Why fire Brady, who was 40-25 his last two years? Are boosters that hungry for an NCAA bid? JMU had only one in Brady?s eight years, but not all change in positive.

7) There have already been 17 teams in the college basketball top 5 this season, the 2nd-most ever in a season and it is only mid-January.

6) Golfer Rory McIlroy caught some kind of viral infection in China a while back, and it resulted in his heart having an irregular beat. He says it isn?t a big deal, but that has to be scary. If it was my heart that had an irregular beat, I?d consider it to be a big deal.

5) South Carolina gave football coach Will Muschamp a 6-year, $28M extension last week.

4) Duke 83, Miami 75? Blue Devils ended game on a 30-9 run. Solid road win.

3) Seahawks hired Ken Norton Jr as their new DC; Norton was fired by the Raiders during the season, then hooked up with the 49ers couple weeks ago, but Seattle gave him a coordinator?s job, so he is off to the Seahawks.

2) Colleges have to end this trend of court storming after big wins, before something terrible happens. You never know if a fan is drunk or just a jerk and says something or instigates a player and the player hauls off and starts a melee.

Few years ago in a high school game out west, I think in Arizona, kids stormed the court after a game and one of the star players wound up getting knocked down and broke a bone in his neck, which ended his playing career.

1) Kansas 71, West Virginia 66? Jayhawks trailed by 12 with 8:54 left, rallied for an impressive road win; Mountaineers were only 5-27 on arc. Kansas only turned ball over 13 times- hard for West Virginia to score when they don?t create turnovers.
