NCAAB Game of the Day: Miami at North Carolina betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami-Florida Hurricanes at No. 10 North Carolina Tar Heels (-10, 152)

With the regular season winding down, North Carolina is heating up with six straight wins and is in position to clinch a double-bye for the ACC Tournament with a victory over visiting Miami on Tuesday night. The Hurricanes reached 20 wins for the sixth time in coach Jim Larranaga's seven seasons with a last-second 79-78 triumph over Boston College on Saturday and desperately need to keep winning to have a chance at an NCAA Tournament berth.

This game is special for two of the Tar Heels' all-time greats in Joel Berry and Theo Pinson as this will be their final game in front of the UNC faithful at Dean E. Smith Center. The seniors have been instrumental in North Carolina's success and are a huge reason why the Tar Heels have a good chance at making their third straight NCAA championship game appearance and second straight title. "It's Senior Day at North Carolina," Larranaga told reporters. "We're expecting a vocal crowd, very enthusiastic." It's a tough spot for a Hurricanes team that has won two in a row after a three-game skid but needed late rallies to pull them off, including a clutch last-second Lonnie Walker IV 3-pointer to top off a 14-point comeback - Miami's largest - against BC.

TV:
9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY:
North Carolina opened as 11.5-point home favorites but that number has been bet down to the current number of -10. The total hit betting boards at 152.5 and has been dropped slightly to 152.

ABOUT MIAMI (20-8 SU, 10-13 ATS, 12-11 O/U):
Larranaga stuck with the bigger starting lineup against Boston College and the move paid off for the second straight game as the Hurricanes held a 39-27 rebounding advantage against the Eagles, with 15 coming on the offensive glass, their third-most offensive rebounds this season. Dewan Huell (team highs of 16 points, nine rebounds) and Anthony Lawrence (13 points, nine rebounds) each fell one rebound shy of a double-double while freshmen Walker (14) and Chris Lykes (15) also scored in double digits as the Hurricanes extended their record to 10-3 when four or more players hit double figures. Miami had problems containing the Eagles as they hit 56.6 percent of their shots from the floor, but the Hurricanes made their free throws count, nailing 13-of-15, including nine in a row down the stretch.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (22-7 SU, 16-11-1 ATS, 17-11 O/U):
Berry (18 points) scored the game-winning points on a steal and a layup in Wednesday's 78-74 victory over Syracuse, the third time he hit the winning points in an ACC game this year, but Luke Maye had a quiet outing with nine points and three rebounds, far below his averages of 18.0 and 10.2. Pinson had his usual success delivering the ball with a game-high seven assists but he also put together one of his best shooting performances with a career-high 23 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, the first time this year he hit multiple times from long distance in a game. The Tar Heels, who face rival Duke in the season finale, remain the ACC's top rebounding team (43.1 per game) and Kenny Williams led North Carolina for the first time with a career high-tying eight boards against Syracuse.

MATCHUP CHART:

zlamhe.jpg

TRENDS:

* Hurricanes are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight up win.
* Tar Heels are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
* Over is 5-1 in Hurricanes' last 6 road games.
* Over is 12-3 in Tar Heels' last 15 home games.
* Under is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings @ North Carolina.

TIP-IN BETTING TIDBITS:

- North Carolina owns a 21-7 series advantage over Miami, but the Hurricanes have won five of the last eight meetings.

- Miami and North Carolina join Duke and Virginia as the only ACC schools to own six or more 20-win seasons in the last seven years.

- The Tar Heels are 15-1 this season when Pinson has five or more assists.

CONSENSUS:
Numbers show 58 percent of contest players like the road underdog Miami Hurricanes to cover the spread.

Tuesday's Wagers
February 27, 2018

**Miami at North Carolina**

-- North Carolina (22-7 straight up, 16-11 against the spread) has been downright nasty at home this year, producing a 12- SU record and a 10-3 ATS mark.

-- As of early this morning, most books had North Carolina installed as a 10.5-point favorite.

-- UNC has won six straight games but saw its 5-0 ATS surge snapped in this past Wednesday?s 78-74 win over Syracuse as a 4.5-point road favorite. The Tar Heels led 74-66 with less than five minutes remaining until the ?Cuse went on an 8-0 run to pull even. They scored the game?s final four points in last two minutes, but their backers were left disappointed by the Orange?s backdoor cover by one-half point.

-- In the win at the Carrier Dome, Theo Pinson paces UNC with 23 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Joel Berry II added 18 points and four assists compared to merely one turnover, while Sterling Manley finished with 12 points and six boards in only 17 minutes of playing time in a reserve role.

-- UNC junior forward Luke Maye leads UNC in scoring (18.0 points per game), rebounding (10.2 RPG), field-goal percentage (51.3%), 3-point shooting accuracy (46.7%) and blocked shots (1.2 BPG). Berry is averaging 17.7 PPG and has an 88/49 assist-to-turnover ratio, while Cameron Johnson (12.7 PPG) has a 42/19 assist-to-turnover ratio and is making 90.0 percent of his free-throw attempts. Kenny Williams (11.3 PPG) paces the Tar Heels in steals (1.1 SPG) and has drained 41.0 percent of his treys.

-- Roy Williams?s squad is ranked 10th in the latest Top 25 from the Associated Press) and is fifth in the RPI Rakings. UNC is 5-3 versus the RPI Top 25, 9-5 against the Top 50 and 15-6 vs. the Top 100. The Tar Heels have home wins over the likes of Michigan, Clemson, Duke and Notre Dame. They also have road victories at Tennessee, at N.C. St., at Louisville, at Syracuse, at Davidson, at Stanford and at Notre Dame, in addition to neutral-court wins over Arkansas and Ohio St.

-- Miami (20-8 SU, 10-13 ATS) has compiled a 7-4 record both SU and ATS in 11 road assignments.

-- Miami is still without sophomore guard Bruce Brown, who is hoping to return sometime in March after sustaining a fracture in his foot. Brown, one of the Hurricanes? best defenders, was averaging 11.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists per game and 1.3 steals per game.

-- Miami is No. 28 in the RPI Rankings with its 1-3 record against the Top 25, a 4-5 mark versus the Top 50 and a 7-7 ledger against the Top 100. The Hurricanes have home wins over Louisville, FSU and Boston College, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Middle Tennessee. They have road victories at N.C. State, at Virginia Tech and at Notre Dame.

-- Miami is mired in a 2-8 ATS slump, but the Hurricanes have won seven of its past 11 games. They snapped a three-game losing streak with last week?s 77-74 win at Notre Dame as 4.5-point underdogs. UM won a 79-78 decision over Boston College on Saturday as a 6.5-point home ?chalk.? Dewan Huell led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Chris Lykes had 15 points in a reserve role.

-- The ?over? is 17-11 overall for UNC, 10-3 in its home outings. The ?over? is 6-2 for the Tar Heels? in their last eight contests.

-- The ?over? is on a 10-4 run for UM to improve to 12-11 overall and 6-5 in its road games.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Boise State at San Diego State**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had San Diego State listed as a 2.5-point favorite.

-- San Diego State (22-6 SU, 14-12-1 ATS) has been outstanding at home, posting an 11-2 SU record and a 9-2 ATS mark. The Aztecs have produced a 2-1 record both SU and ATS in three games as single-digit home ?chalk.?

-- San Diego State won?t have 6?10? senior power forward Malik Pope for a second straight game after he was suspended indefinitely this past weekend. Pope is alleged to have received impermissible benefits according to media reports in relation to the federal investigation into corruption in college basketball. Pope will be sidelined pending an internal investigation into his eligibility. He was averaging 12.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocked shots per game.

-- SDSU has won four consecutive contests while going 3-1 ATS. The Aztecs won all four games by double-digit margins, but they failed to cover the spread as 13.5-point favorites in Saturday?s 71-59 win at San Jose State. This was a brutal beat for SDSU?s betting supporters, as it led by 15 and purposefully ran out the shot clock without attempting a shot to give the Spartans the ball back with 3.8 seconds remaining. But San Jose State inbounded and ? check this out ? its player dribbled to the top of the key and attempted a trey as if it were a free throw without jumping. He was left uncontested and, of course, the meaningless shot went in to give San Jose State an improbable backdoor cover. Jalen McDaniels was the catalyst with 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Max Montana contributed 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point land in only 19 minutes off the bench. Trey Kell finished with six points, six rebounds, three steals and nine assists compared to merely one turnover.

-- Devin Watson (12.5 PPG) is the Aztecs? second-leading scorer who has handed out a team-best 3.9 APG while hitting 37.4 percent of his treys. Matt Mitchell (11.0 PPG) is making 37.1 percent of his 3?s.

-- SDSU is ranked No. 107 in the RPI, going 0-1 versus the Top 25, 1-3 against the Top 50 and 3-6 vs. the Top 100. The Aztecs have home wins over Gonzaga and Wyoming, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Georgia.

-- Boise State (22-6 SU, 14-12 ATS) is No. 46 in the RPI with a 0-2 record against the RPI Top 25, a 1-2 ledger versus the Top 50 and a 4-4 mark against the Top 100. BSU?s best wins are a home win over Loyola-Chicago (by 34!), a neutral-court victory over Illinois State (by 18) and road wins at Oregon and at Fresno State.

--Since seeing its four-game winning streak snapped in back-to-back defeats at Utah St. and vs. Nevada, Boise State has responded with back-to-back victories in blowout fashion. First, Christian Sengfelder scored 17 points to lead the Broncos to a 76-52 home win over Air Force as 14-point favorites. Then this past Saturday in Ft. Collins, BSU raced out to a 21-point halftime lead and coasted to an 87-54 triumph as a 7.5-point road favorite. Hutchison dropped 27 points on the Rams thanks to 10-of-18 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 makes from downtown. Justinian Jessup added 16 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Zach Haney finished with 13 points and seven boards.

-- Boise State is 6-4 SU and 5-4-1 ATS in 10 road assignments. The Broncos are 3-1-1 ATS with three outright victories in five games as road underdogs.

-- Leon Rice?s team is led by Hutchison, the senior forward who paces BSU in scoring (19.9 PPG), assists (3.5 APG), rebounding (7.6 RPG) and steals (1.5 SPG). Jessup (11.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG) has drained 46.2 percent of his 3?s and is second on the team in steals (38). Sengfelder, a grad transfer from Fordham, is averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

-- BSU has beaten San Diego State in five of the past seven head-to-head meetings, going 4-3 ATS in the process. The Broncos knocked off San Diego State, 83-80 but failed to cover as four-point home favorites on Jan. 13. The 163 combined points catapulted ?over? the 144-point tally. Hutchison scored a career-high 44 points in front of 10,874 fans at Taco Bell Arena. He had eight rebounds and buried 15-of-21 FGAs and 7-of-10 launches from long distance. Lexus Williams added 16 points for BSU. Watson finished with 19 points and eight assists in the losing effort, while Pope finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.

-- The ?under? is on a 6-1 run for the Aztecs to improve to 12-12-1 overall and 7-4 in their home contests.

-- The ?under? has cashed in five consecutive BSU games overall and six straight road assignments. The ?under? is 16-10-1 overall for the Broncos, 7-2 in their 10 road outings.

-- The CBS Sports Network will have the telecast at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Without the nation?s second-leading shot blocker Mo Bamba, Texas lost an 80-70 decision at Kansas last night. However, the Longhorns took the cash as 12-point underdogs. My only Monday play in college hoops was the ?over? for Texas at KU. That was a winner with the 150 combined points jumping ?over ?the 141.5-point total. Shaka Smart?s team also covered second-half wagers as a four-point underdog after trailing by 13 at intermission (+17 adjusted).

-- Northwestern?s Vic Law has been downgraded to ?doubtful? for Thursday?s second-round Big Ten Tournament showdown against Penn St. Law, who averages 12.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game, is dealing with a foot injury. The Wildcats? Bryant McIntosh (12.0 PPG, 5.1 APG) is listed as ?questionable ?with a shoulder injury, while PSU?s Mike Watkins is ?questionable? with a leg injury. Watkins averages 12.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game for the Nittany Lions.

-- Mississippi State has won 18 of 19 home games outright, posting an 8-6 spread record. The Bulldogs are hosting Tennessee tonight and they were 1.5-point favorites early this morning. The Volunteers are 7-4 SU and 8-3 ATS on the road. Ben Howland?s team was in the ?First Four Out? of Joe Lunardi?s latest edition of ?Bracketology? that was released on ESPN.com Monday morning. These teams will collide at The Hump in Starkville at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network.

-- Florida has won six in a row at Coleman Coliseum and hasn?t tasted defeat at Alabama since 2006. That UF loss was its last of ?06 as it won out and went on to win the school?s first national title in men?s hoops. Mike White?s team allowed a double-digit lead to get away when it was outscored 41-17 in the second half of a 68-50 home loss to Alabama on Feb. 3. The Crimson Tide crushed UF on the glass with a 37-24 rebounding advantage. Collin Sexton was the catalyst for Avery Johnson?s team, producing 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and one blocked shot. The ?under? is on a 7-1 run for the Gators, who snapped a three-game losing streak with Saturday?s 72-66 win over Auburn as 2.5-point home favorites. The ?under? is 18-10 overall for ?Bama, which has lost three in a row both SU and ATS. Nevertheless, the Tide was favored by 2.5 points early this morning. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

-- Missouri plays at Vanderbilt tonight on ESPN2 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. Most spots had the game as a pick ?em this a.m. The ?over? is on a 9-3 run for the Commodores, who are in a 1-4 ATS slump.

-- Arkansas will host Auburn tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network. The Razorbacks, fresh off a crucial comeback win at Alabama, was favored by two this morning. Mike Anderson?s team is 5-1 both SU and ATS in its past six contests. Meanwhile, Auburn has dropped two it last three both SU and ATS. When these teams met on The Plains on Jan. 6, Bruce Pearl?s squad won 88-77 as a 4.5-point home ?chalk.? The 165 combined points dipped ?under? the 167.5-point total.

Duke-UNC takes center stage this week
February 27, 2018

College basketball has some great rivalries. Kentucky and Louisville have a heated one. So do Xavier and Cincinnati.

Arizona-Arizona State and Kansas-Kansas State don't like each other much, either.

This week features not only what many consider to be the greatest college basketball rivalry, but one of the best in any sport.

Duke-North Carolina.

The two meetings - three if they face off in the ACC tournament - are always must-watch programming and Saturday's game is no different.

Duke (24-6, 12-5) is up to No. 5 in the AP Top 25 after winning five straight games, but lost to unranked Virginia Tech Monday night.

North Carolina (22-7, 11-5) moved up a spot to No. 9 this week after stretching its winning streak to six games.

Neither can win the ACC title - top-ranked Virginia wrapped that up last week - but both a vying for first-round byes in the conference tournament. The Blue Devils also are hoping to lock up a coveted No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The not-so-neighborly teams separated by about 10 miles played an entertaining game their first meeting on Feb. 8.

North Carolina won it 82-78 after rallying from a 12-point deficit at the Smith Center.

''Once everybody got going, we proved to ourselves how good we can be,'' said North Carolina's Kenny Williams, who matched his career high with 20 points in that game.

Duke will be at home and has star freshman Marvin Bagley III back after he missed two weeks with a sprained knee.

Find a way to watch this one.

AAC SHOWDOWN

Wichita State's move to the American Athletic Conference was a big boost to the Shockers, putting them in a strong conference that should help them come NCAA Tournament seeding time.

It also has strengthened the conference and created some stellar matchups.

A big one comes on Sunday, when No. 10 Cincinnati plays at No. 11 Wichita State.

The Bearcats (25-4, 14-2) lead the ACC by a game over the Shockers (23-5, 13-3), who won the teams' first meeting 76-72 at Cincinnati. Landry Shamut scored 19 points and Wichita State ended the nation's longest home winning streak at 39 games in that game.

The Bearcats will certainly looking for payback in this budding rivalry.

BIG 10 BEGINS

The Big 10 is the first Power 5 league to play its conference tournament, kicking off Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

No. 15 Michigan is the only one of conference's ranked teams that starts on Thursday, facing the winner between Iowa and Illinois.

No. 2 Michigan State, the regular-season champion, plays the Maryland-Wisconsin winner and No. 13 Ohio State gets the Penn State-Northwestern winner. No. 8 Purdue has to wait two games to find out who it will play among Indiana, Minnesota and Rutgers.

WCC REPEAT?

No. 7 Gonzaga and No. 22 Saint Mary's appear to be on a collision course to meet in the West Coast Conference title game for the eighth time in 10 seasons.

The Bulldogs (27-4) won the regular-season title for the 18th time in 19 seasons after going through the conference schedule 17-1. Gonzaga's only loss was to Saint Mary's and the Zags avenged that with a convincing 78-65 win in Moraga. The Gaels (16-2) had a surprising loss after that game, paving the way to Gonzaga's regular-season title.

Gonzaga opens against Loyola Marymount or Portland on Saturday and Saint Mary's gets the Santa Clara-Pepperdine winner.

Dinero Tracker - Feb. 27
February 27, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 2-3 | NCAA BB: 4-3

Following up a 29-11 day in college by going 3-9 wasn't ideal. There were some heinous finishes in the mix, so you can find the best details below. Following up an 8-1 night in NBA with a 5-3 was a decent follow-up, but the 76ers unexpectedly slumped on the road to keep it from being far better. Both sets of guarantees came in for a third straight day. Here is Sunday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

TUESDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Bulls +10.5

The Hornets have come out of the All-Star break with great purpose, running their streak of wins by 15 or more points to three games by taking care of the Wizards and Pistons. Buzz City should continue its push with a victory here, but the additional points the Bulls are getting coming in on the second night of a back-to-back may be too generous. Zach LaVine didn't play last night and will participate here, while the team's depth should give Fred Hoiberg fresh options to throw out there at Charlotte. Dwight Howard has been fantastic, but we can always count on him to leave a few points behind at the free-throw line. Either by hanging around for 48 minutes or slithering in through an open back door, I'm bullish on Chicago covering. Take the points.

MONDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Lakers ML -118

Although the danger existed that the young impressionable Laker lads might get swallowed up by Atlanta's evening delights, everyone should be in the mix to try and continue a road trip that hits Miami and San Antonio next. They'll have a few days in South Florida to monitor before the next move, but I like them to continue a surge that will produce their fourth winning streak of at least three games since 2018 began. They failed to win more than consecutive games over the season's first three months, but are clearly playing much better and won't regress with Lonzo Ball back. Atlanta just bought out Ersan Ilyasova, will be missing key backup Malcolm Delaney and have to deal with the reality that there are more Lakers fans in Philips Arena tonight than Hawks faithful. Ride L.A. on the money line to avoid laying the 1.5 on the road.

Result: The freebie is on a nice little run, so lunch is on you next time we meet. The Lakers got off to a strong start and never trailed after the 3:14 mark of the first quarter, rolling to a 123-104 win. The Lakers overcame 23 turnovers by hitting 15 3-pointers and shooting 52 percent. L.A. also outrebounded Atlanta 59-41. We'll see if the Lakers can avoid the South Beach flu next time out. They're suddenly pretty deep.

MONDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Raptors -10

The Pistons have seen Blake Griffin slump of late and they didn't play well at all in yesterday's visit to Charlotte. Although they're just north of Detroit across the border, the Pistons are again going to struggle in an opposing arena, especially against a team with multiple point guards who can take advantage of Reggie Jackson's continued absence. The Raptors had won their five February games at Air Canada Centre by an average of nearly 24 points prior to Friday's loss to Milwaukee and own the league's best home record. They should crush Detroit. Ride Toronto, guaranteed.

Result: The Raptors won every quarter and turned a six-point halftime lead into a commanding 22-point edge before the third quarter was halfway through, ultimately winning 123-94. The NBA guarantee is on a 7-for-8 run, coming in for a fourth straight day after this one.

LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

The pick: Kansas -10.5

Mo Bamba is nursing an injured toe and is now dealing with controversy over extra benefits, so it remains to be seen whether he's played his last game at Texas. The future lottery pick is the key to Texas' success at both ends of the floor given the fact attrition has limited its quality depth, so his absence is a complete deal-breaker on taking the points. Considering it's also Senior Night in Lawrence and the team can celebrate another Big 12 title, conditions are ripe for a blowout. Lay the points and ride Kansas, guaranteed.

Result: My run of six straight college locks came to an end in painful fashion here. Although the number started at 9, the number reached 12 as news of Bamba's absence became official, so Kansas' 80-70 win just missed delivering on the cover. The Longhorns won the second half 38-35, showing heart in a game they were really never in after the first few minutes. Texas connected on a few huge open 3-pointers down the stretch and should be commended for not hanging its head despite being shorthanded. When Dylan Osetkowski fouled out, I thought this was in the bag. Coming up just short was a tough way to see the streak end.

BAD BEAT BULLETIN

The pick: Celtics/Grizzlies UNDER 203.5

The Celtics will have Aron Baynes back in the lineup and got quality contributions from Daniel Theis in his absence, so they'll have options against Marc Gasol, who will return to the lineup after a rest day. With Andrew Harrison set to pester Kyrie Irving, this has the makings of a sloppy game and will likely be non-competitive down the stretch. Typically, you need two teams to reach a total. Ride the under.

Result: I was channeling that Leo DiCaprio "Wolf of Wall Street" meme where he's losing his mind after this one failed to land safely. Despite Boston scoring 67 first-half points, we were still in position to come out a winner here due to how lopsided this was, but Memphis scored 57 second-half points as JaMychal Green couldn't miss a shot and Shane Larkin was having fun running the Celtics offense. With under four minutes left, the Celtics' lead was down to 98-85, which put us in great position to come in under the posted total with a few misses and some milking of the shot clock. Instead, nine of the next 11 possessions resulted in points. That put this game at 107-93 entering the final minute, so we still had a shot. Abdel Nader hit two free throws, Jarrell Martin hit a 3-pointer and Brice Johnson got a dunk that actually helped cover the 11.5-point spread in a 109-98 loss. Condolences to any Celtics-backers. My under beat was equally as painful.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Lipscomb/Stetson OVER 158.5

Lipscomb should advance in this A-Sun Tournament quarterfinal, but the No. 2 seed is being saddled with a 12-point spread, which could be problematic to cover since the Hatters do shoot the ball well. Casey Alexander will have his team pushing at all costs -- one of the reasons they average 81.7 poins -- so look for Stetson to be able to put up points as well since they're unlikely to be able to get this pace slowed down to their liking. Ride the over.

Result: I was extremely tempted by laying points with the Bison, but just thought the dozen was too rich. It kept me from an in-game parlay, because the teams came through on clearing the total. Lipscomb won 89-73.

UPSET CITY

The pick: North Florida +6.5

The Ospreys have a number of guards who can really push tempo and fill it up, and they won't be lacking for confidence considering they just won at home over NJIT 86-75 on Feb. 17. UNF lost to the Highlanders in Jersey 91-59 in their first visit this season, but that game seems to have influenced this spread too much. Look for an aggressive performance from the visitors and ride North Florida and the over in this Atlantic Sun quarterfinal.

Result: North Florida got off to a tremendous start, capitalizing on an awful early offensive effort to build a 39-19 halftime lead at NJIT. The Highlanders predictably rallied, but couldn't get even and fell 80-76 in a 5-over-4 upset. We just missed on this in-game parlay, coming up a 3-pointer short.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Georgetown/Marquette OVER 157.5

This feels like a game where the team that has the ball last will wind up pulling out the win. With Marquette getting guard Markus Howard back, they'll have enough shotmakers to win on the road, but will have to overcome Marcus Derrickson's ability to go inside-outside and a likely big night from Jesse Govan in the post. Ride the over.

Result: While there were some unfortunate moments on Monday, we were blessed with some good luck too. The Hoyas and Golden Eagles were on track to deliver this total all night until the final few minutes of regulation, where both teams hit a lull. Sam Hauser hit a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to make it 78-76 and it looked like this bet was toast, but Hoyas guard Jonathan Mulmore somehow raced down the court inside three ticks for an uncontested layup that bought us an extra five minutes. Did they start the clock late? It was incredible. Marquette ended up with a 90-86 OT win, draining 18 3-pointers.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Kennesaw State +3.5

The Dolphins have been pounded today, going from a pick?em when this line was unveiled to where this line is right now, where you can get more than a possession approaching the start of this A-Sun Tournament. Although the Dolphins will be at home, they have lost key guard JD Notae, a capable defender and one of the team?s best shooters. Al Skinner coaches the Owls and got some improvement from his group down the stretch. It wouldn?t be surprising to see them win this outright. Ride Kennesaw State plus the points.

Result: The betting markets had this one right. Notae's absence was overcome effectively by JU, which held serve at home 87-68. I've been to Swisher Gym a number of times in my life, and every instance was far more entertaining that what I saw via stream last night. Still, it can never be said that I don't love the A-Sun!

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Duke/Virginia Tech UNDER 155

Both teams are likely to ride their zone heavily, so the key to this game winding up lower-scoring than expected will be avoiding any shooters catching fire and ensuring the Hokies don't get going in transition. Avoiding overtime obviously is key too, but otherwise, the under is a solid total play.

Result: This was never in doubt, so all we had to do was avoid overtime as Duke melted down in the final minutes. Virginia Tech won 64-63 in a game where both teams committed to zone, resulting in this final score falling 28 points shy of the posted total.

Top 26 Capsules
February 27, 2018

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Ja'Quan Newton hit a running 30-footer at the horn to help Miami upset No. 9 North Carolina 91-88 in a wild finish Tuesday night.

Newton's heave off his left foot came immediately after UNC's Joel Berry II hit a tough 3 of his own to tie the game with 4.1 seconds left. Miami pushed the ball upcourt for Newton's shot over Berry, then the Hurricanes immediately mobbed Newton near midcourt.

The shot capped a game that saw Miami (21-8, 10-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) squander a 16-point second-half lead.

Chris Lykes scored 18 points to lead Miami, which shot 55 percent.

Berry matched his career high with 31 points for the Tar Heels (22-8, 11-6), who lost their final home game to snap a six-game winning streak.

---

ARKANSAS 91, No. 14 AUBURN 82

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Daniel Gafford had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Arkansas to its sixth win in seven games.

Gafford was 10 of 15 from the field, including seven dunks, and matched his career high with seven blocks for the Razorbacks (21-9, 10-7 Southeastern Conference), who won for the fourth time at home over a ranked team this season.

Mustapha Heron scored 28 points and Jared Harper had 20 to lead the Tigers (24-6, 12-5), who could have clinched at least a share of the regular season SEC title with a win.

---

No. 16 TENNESSEE 76, MISSISSIPPI STATE 54

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Admiral Schofield had 24 points and Lamonte Turner added 12 for the Volunteers, who pulled away in the second half.

Schofield also had seven rebounds and shot 9 of 18 from the field for the Volunteers (22-7, 12-5 SEC), who made 13 of their final 15 field goal attempts.

Quinndary Weatherspoon led Mississippi State (21-9, 9-8) with 17 points. Nick Weatherspoon had 11 points and Aric Holman finished with 10 for the Bulldogs.

---

SAINT JOSEPH'S 78, No. 17 RHODE ISLAND 48

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - James Demery scored 21 points and Taylor Funk had 17 for Saint Joseph's.

Shavar Newkirk added 14 points for the Hawks (14-15, 9-8 A 10), who posted their first true road victory over a ranked team since beating No. 15 Georgetown on Jan. 2, 1979.

Jared Terrell scored 19 points with seven rebounds and E.C. Matthews had 13 points for Rhode Island (23-5, 15-2). It was the Rams' second loss in four games after a school record 16-game winning streak.

****************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Starting today, the first of some changes here at the website will take place.

No more daily NHL write-ups; I?ve decided to concentrate on basketball between football and baseball seasons. For now, everything else here stays the same.

12) I?m not making this up: A Pittsburgh-area family is suing Steelers? safety Sean Davis because he posted a Snapchat video about how slow the service was at the drive-thru window at a Chick-fil-A, where their son works- the son was then ?bullied? at school because of the video.

The lawsuit contains claims for libel, cyberbullying, intentional infliction of emotional distress and slander. Davis offered to invite the teenager and two friends to be his guest at a Steelers? practice, and to go to Davis? summer football camp in Washington, but the family declined.

Good grief, our country is getting soft.

11) I mentioned Sunday how Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley was going after the refs as they left the floor in Corvallis after the Sun Devils lost to Oregon State Saturday- the Pac-12 nailed him with a $10,000 fine for those shenanigans.

10) If Bronx Bombers? GM Brian Cashman is so bleeping smart, let him go be the GM of the Pirates or the Rays or the A?s and see how many freakin? games his team wins. Gets old hearing media types praise Cashman all the time? he is playing checkers with more pieces than most of his opponents- he should win. Since 2001, Cashman?s team has one World Series title, after a run of four titles in five years in the late 90?s.

9) Speaking of Tampa Bay, they may not have an excuse to be cheapskates for too much longer; Rays and Fox Sports Net are nearing a long-term extension to their broadcast deal. From CBSSports.com:

?Fox?s payout is expected to increase to around $50 million in 2019 under the new contract. Over the 15-year life of the deal, which would run through the 2033 season, Fox would pay, on average, around $82 million per year.?

8) Several NBA personnel types told ESPN?s Jeff Goodman that they would advise Missouri freshman Michael Porter Jr to play this season, rather than just sit out and wait for the NBA Draft. Porter played 2:00 in the opener and hasn?t played since because of a back problem.

7) Texas declined to sign free agent P Seung-hwan Oh because he failed his physical; Toronto then signed Oh- you wonder what the difference is in the physicals between the two teams.

6) Three US cities with the best TV ratings for the Winter Olympics: Salt Lake City, Denver and Minneapolis.

5) Former big league reliever Andrew Bailey retired from playing and will be the Angels? instant replay coordinator this season. I?m a curious guy; wonder how much that job pays?

4) Why is Russell Wilson in spring training with the Bronx Bombers? How does his presence there help them prepare for this season? Does he still get paid by the Seahawks if he tears an ACL playing baseball?

3) 20 or so years ago, I bowled in a Thursday night league; had never done it before, haven?t done it since. It was kind of fun, but I was in over my head and didn?t do very well? I didn?t even own my own bowling ball, just used an alley ball every week. But hey, I could watch college games on TV and eat pizza in between my turns.

One night, a guy on the lanes to my right bowled a 300? it was a different league, really good bowlers, and I remember how casual the guy was about bowling a 300. I was excited, I mean the guy just bowled a freakin? perfect game- couldn?t understand why he just smiled, and got ready for his next game. Best I ever did was a 212; anything over 170 was cause for celebration.

2) According to baseball-reference.com. San Francisco Giants already have $127M in salary obligations for 2020; Minnesota Twins have $0 on the books after 2019.

1? If you?re a kid in West Virginia this week, you were on an unscheduled vacation? teachers went on strike for better pay/benefits, but they?ll be back at work on Thursday.

When I was a junior in high school, our teachers were on strike when school started? problem is, teachers at two other local schools were also on strike, so the teachers would go to the other two schools and be subs to make some $$$, which kind of defeated the whole purpose.

We had a different teacher for every class every day for the whole week; it was chaotic; some kids marched to the district offices to ?protest for the teachers? ? they just didn?t want to go to class. For those lazy people like me who had no desire to walk anywhere, we just sat in class, did very little and stayed out of trouble. Good times.

There are four teams that should vie for the tournament title. Michigan State won the regular season title, so they are a slight favorite over Purdue and Ohio State who finished tied for second. Michigan finished in third. We?ll start with Michigan who has a strong RPI of 23 and is looking to finish the regular season with 25 wins. The Wolverines have won five straight games overall and they are very capable of beating Michigan State in a likely semifinal matchup.

Ohio State is fourth in the betting odds and they haven?t looked that great in recent weeks and even their wins against Rutgers and Indiana to end the season don?t inspire much confidence.

The team that probably should be favored to win the tournament is Purdue. They have an RPI of 9 and they should be in line for a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Purdue should have Vincent Edwards back at full strength and they should be playing in the tourney final.

Michigan State is ranked highly in the polls but their numbers are not as strong as Purdue or Michigan. The Spartans are just 15th in RPI and they really don?t look like a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tourney. The problem with going against them is that they have Miles Bridges, Cassius Winston and Jaren Jackson Jr. They also have a coach in Tom Izzo who knows how to win.

Dark Horses

Penn State is probably not going to make the NCAA Tourney unless they go on a huge run in the Big Ten tourney. They have a poor RPI and even getting to the final probably won?t be enough. Maryland is not in much better shape with an RPI of 64, so they need to win the tournament to get a bid. The true darkhorse and the most interesting team is Nebraska. They have an RPI of just 61 but they get a double-bye into the quarterfinals. They just need to win two games to get to the final and that might be enough to get them an NCAA Tourney bid.

Long Shots

Perhaps Wisconsin should be in the darkhorse category but it is hard to get too excited about a team with a losing record playing away from home. Northwestern has the look of a team that has given up on the season so they also have to be put into this category along with the bottom feeders.

Big Ten Tournament Free Picks

The first round should have Iowa beating Illinois and Minnesota getting past Rutgers. The second round game between Wisconsin and Maryland is a toss-up, while Michigan should beat Iowa. Northwestern vs. Penn State is another toss-up, while Indiana is no guarantee to win the 6-11 game.

Michigan State should win their quarterfinal game, Michigan could struggle against Nebraska in the quarterfinals, but will probably win, Ohio State should survive their matchup, and Purdue should roll in their quarterfinal. A semifinal between Michigan State and Michigan would be superb and could go either way, while Purdue should dominate their semifinal. Purdue is the pick to win the title against either Michigan State or Michigan.

No. 14 Rutgers vs. No. 11 Minnesota (BTN, 8:00 p.m. ET)

Minnesota turned into the biggest disappointment in the Big 10 following a 24-win season in 2017 and an NCAA tournament appearance. The Golden Gophers jumped out to a 13-3 start prior to a dismal 2-13 finish, including one win since January 16. Minnesota wrapped up Big 10 play at 1-8 SU and 2-7 ATS away from Minneapolis, but one of its four conference victories came against Rutgers in early December, 89-67.

For the third consecutive season, the Scarlet Knights finished in last place of the Big 10, but picked up their most wins in conference play with three. None of those victories came away from Piscataway, as Rutgers scored 60 points or less in seven of nine road conference contests. Rutgers has won only once in the Big 10 tournament in its three-year stay in the conference, upsetting Ohio State last season in the opening round. Minnesota defeated Rutgers in the opening game of the Big 10 tournament in 2015 as 10.5-point favorites, 80-68.

Big Ten Conference Tournament First Round betting preview and odds

Jordan Murphy has been a rare bright spot for Minnesota as the junior forward is the only Gopher to start every game while leading the team in scoring (17.0 points).

The First Round of the Big Ten Tournament gets underway in New York City and if any of the teams involved in Wednesday's opening round hope to go dancing, it will take a miracle run to a conference tournament title.

Tournament to be played at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York.

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (+1, 160.5)

Illinois dropped its first eight Big Ten games to tie a dubious school record, and perhaps none of those defeats stung quite as much as the one it suffered last month against Iowa. The 13th-seeded Fighting Illini will seek some payback Wednesday when they meet the 12th-seeded Hawkeyes in the first round of the Big Ten tournament at New York's Madison Square Garden in a rematch of the highest-scoring game in the league this season.

Four of Illinois' first six conference losses came by one point, were decided in overtime or both, although the Illini appeared to be on the verge of getting their first league win on Jan. 11 before Iowa managed to produce the second-largest comeback in school history, overcoming an early 20-point deficit en route to a 104-97 overtime win. Illinois eventually got its first Big Ten victory 13 days later, beginning a stretch in which it went 4-6 to wrap up the regular season, punctuated by Sunday's 75-62 win at Rutgers.

The Hawkeyes are hoping Sunday's 77-70 triumph over Northwestern - snapping a six-game losing streak - can provide a late spark for a team that has struggled recently in postseason play. Iowa has failed to win a game in the conference tournament four straight seasons and is 2-7 in the Big Ten tournament overall under eighth-year coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes are yielding 78.5 points per game - the highest mark allowed by the program since surrendering 81.7 points in 1993-94.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (-2.5, 133.5)

When Minnesota routed Rutgers in the Big Ten opener for both teams in early December, coach Richard Pitino's squad appeared quite capable of living up to the hype it had generated as a dark-horse candidate to win the conference. The 11th-seeded Golden Gophers haven't come close to matching their early form since, but they will try to keep their season alive Wednesday when they meet the 14th-seeded Scarlet Knights in the first round of the Big Ten tournament at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Minnesota improved to 8-1 on the season following its 89-67 victory over Rutgers on Dec. 3 and were 10 games over .500 exactly one month later before its season took a turn for the worst once the calendar flipped to January, as the team lost Amir Coffey for most of the year to a shoulder injury and suspended senior center Reggie Lynch amid allegations of sexual misconduct. The Gophers are only 2-13 since their 13-3 start and have been largely uncompetitive in most of those contests, losing nine of them by double figures. Jordan Murphy's 352 rebounds are a single-season program record.

Rutgers hasn't been much better over the last 15 games, losing by at least 10 points nine times while going 3-12. Corey Sanders (14.3 points) is the only Scarlet Knight who ranks inside the top 35 players in scoring for the conference's lowest-scoring offense (64.5 points) and the junior guard enters Wednesday eighth in school history in assists (319), 11th in steals (134) and 17th in points (1,296).

Wednesday's Wagers
February 28, 2018

**Villanova at Seton Hall**

-- Villanova (25-4 straight up, 19-10 against the spread) is No. 4 in the latest Associated Press Top 25, No.2 in the RPI Rankings and No. 2 at KenPom.com. Jay Wright?s team is unbeaten in four games against RPI Top-25 opponents, 9-3 versus the Top 50 and 13-4 against the Top 100. The Wildcats own home wins over the likes of Xavier, Providence, Creighton, Seton Hall, Butler and Marquette. They also have road wins at Temple, at Xavier, at St. John?s and at Marquette, in addition to neutral-court scalps of Western Kentucky, Tennessee and Gonzaga.

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Villanova installed as a 5.5-point favorite with a total of 161.5.

-- Villanova has posted an 8-3 SU record and a 6-5 ATS mark in 11 true road assignments.

-- Villanova leads the nation in scoring, averaging 87.5 points per game. The Wildcats are sixth in the country in field-goal percentage (50.8%), 19th in 3-point accuracy (40.0%) and 36th in free-throw percentage (76.1%).

-- Wright?s team is led by junior guard Jalen Brunson, who paces ?Nova in scoring (19.3 PPG), assists (4.9 APG) and FG percentage (53.1%). Omari Spellman (11.0 PPG) is averaging team-highs in rebounding (7.7 RPG) and blocked shots (1.5 BPG), while Mikal Bridges is averaging 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocked shots per game. The junior wing is burying 50.7 percent of his FG attempts, 41.9 percent of his 3?s and 83.3 percent of his FTs.

-- Villanova is just 3-3 both SU and ATS in its past six games, including Saturday?s 89-83 overtime loss at Creighton as a 6.5-point road favorite. Brunson had 22 points, five rebounds and five assists in the losing effort. Bridges finished with 18 points, while Spellman contributed 14 points, 10 boards and two blocked shots.

-- Villanova has won four straight over Seton Hall in this rivalry, including a 92-76 win as a 12.5-point home favorite on Feb. 4. The 168 combined points elevated ?over? the 155.5-point total. Spellman was the catalyst with 26 points, 11 rebounds and three rejections, while Brunson had 21 points and six assists compared to merely one turnover. Bridges added 17 points and Donte DiVincenzo tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Desi Rodriguez had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists with only one turnover in defeat. Angel Delgado added 18 points and nine boards.

-- Seton Hall (20-9 SU, 13-16 ATS) has produced a 13-2 SU record and a 6-9 ATS ledger at home. This is the first time Kevin Willard?s team has been a home underdog this year.

-- Seton Hall might be without Rodriguez tonight for a second straight game. Rodriguez injured his ankle in last week?s win at Providence, which was postponed due to a slippery floor and then finished at a different venue at noon Eastern the next day. The senior forward out of Abraham Lincoln High School in the Bronx missed Saturday?s overtime win at St. John?s and is listed as ?questionable? vs. ?Nova. Rodriguez leads the Pirates in scoring (18.1 PPG) and FG percentage (50.4%).

-- Willard?s squad has won three games in a row since enduring a four-game losing slide. The Hall has covered in back-to-back outings after going through a 0-5 ATS slump. The Pirates beat the Johnnies 81-74 as two-point road underdogs in the extra session. Khadeen Carrington led the way against the Red Storm, producing 22 points, six rebounds and four assists. Myles Powell had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Angel Delgado finished with 14 points and 13 boards.

-- Seton Hall is No. 21 in the RPI, going 1-4 versus the Top 25, 6-5 against the RPI and 8-7 vs. the Top 100. The Pirates have home wins over Creighton, Providence and St. John?s, in addition to a neutral-court victory vs. Texas Tech. They own road scalps at Louisville, at Butler, at Providence and at St. John?s.

-- The ?over? has hit in seven consecutive Seton Hall games to improve to 18-10 overall and 8-6 in its home outings. If the total stays at 161.5, it will tie for the third-highest the Pirates have seen this year. They saw the ?under? emerge in games when the total was 161.5 and 162, but the highest tally (167) resulted in an ?over.?

-- The ?over? is 9-1 in the Wildcats? past 10 games to improve to 20-9 overall, 6-5 in their road contests.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

**Florida State at Clemson**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Clemson (21-7 SU, 14-11 ATS) listed as a 4.5-point favorite.

-- Brad Brownell?s club is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011, his first year on the job after replacing Oliver Purnell, who had bolted to take the DePaul job. His Clemson team ended a three-game losing streak in Saturday?s 75-67 win over Georgia Tech as a 10-point home ?chalk.? The Tigers failed to cover the number for the third straight game. The Yellow Jackets led by four at intermission, but they were undone by a game-high 25 points from Gabe DeVoe, who drained 4-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc. Elijah Thomas finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Marcquise Reed had 13 points and five assists.

-- Clemson is 18th at KenPom, 18th in the latest AP poll and ninth in the RPI. The Tigers are 2-3 versus the RPI Top 25, 7-6 against the Top 50 and 10-7 vs. the Top 100. They have home wins over North Carolina, Miami, Louisville, N.C. State, Louisiana, South Carolina and Notre Dame. Clemson has also emerged triumphant at Ohio State, at Boston College and at Florida (not at the O?Dome, though, in Sunrise where the NHL?s Florida Panthers play).

-- Clemson has posted a 5-4 SU record and a 4-5 ATS mark in its nine games since losing Donte Grantham to a season-ending knee injury. Grantham was averaging 14.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his team?s first 19 games.

-- Clemson has won 14 of 15 home games while posting a 9-3 spread record at Littlejohn Coliseum.

-- FSU (19-9 SU, 14-11 ATS) has won four in a row over Clemson, going 2-1-1 ATS. The ?over? is on a 5-1 run in this rivalry. When these teams met in Tallahassee on Valentine?s Day, the Seminoles were down by 12 at halftime and by as many as 15 in the second half, but they rallied to force overtime and eventually won an 81-79 decision. FSU?s Phil Cofer scored a team-best 17 points, while Trent Forrest finished with 16 points, four assists, one steal and one block. Forrest is a product of Chipley High School, the same program that produced Amp Lee, a former RB at FSU and in the NFL. The same school about 90 minutes West of Tallahassee also developed Michael Gilmore, a former Florida DB early in Steve Spurrier tenure who now lives than two miles from me in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.

-- In the loss at FSU, Reed scored a game-high 23 points for Clemson. DeVoe and David Skara scored 11 points apiece for the Tigers.

-- Florida State has failed to cover the number in five consecutive contests. Leonard Hamilton?s squad got absolutely run out of Raleigh from start to finish Sunday night, as N.C. St. rolled to an easy 92-72 win as a one-point home ?chalk.? Forrest scored a team-best 16 points, dished out seven assists, grabbed six rebounds and made three steals for the ?Noles.

-- Terance Mann leads FSU in scoring (13.9 PPG), rebounding (5.7 RPG) and FG percentage (57.4%). Cofer is the team?s second-leading scorer (13.1 PPG), while Forrest (6.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 3.9 APG & 1.4 SPG) has a 105/46 assist-to-turnover ratio and 38 steals. Forrest has averaged 14.7 PPG in FSU?s last three times out. He?s scored in double figures only seven times in 27 games, but he?s done so four of the ?Noles? last six outings.

-- FSU is No. 47 in the RPI with its 2-2 record against the Top 25, a 6-5 ledger versus the Top 50 and a 7-8 mark against the Top 100. The Seminoles have home wins over UNC, the ?Cuse, Miami and Clemson, in addition to victories at Florida, at Louisville and at Va. Tech.

-- The ?over? is 13-12 overall the Tigers, but they?ve seen the ?under? go 7-5 in their home games.

-- The ?over? is 15-11 overall for the Seminoles, 6-4 in their road outings.

-- ESPN will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Miami senior guard Ja?Quan Newton drained a thrilling buzzer beater on a running 40-footer to lift his team to an epic 91-88 win at North Carolina last night. The UNC crowd went nuts when Joel Berry, the national-title winning point guard who was playing his final game at the Dean Dome, knocked down a tying trey to cap a furious comeback with 4.8 seconds remaining. The celebration in Chapel Hill was short-lived, however, as the deafening noise was silenced by Newton, who scored nine points at crunch time. He went 4-of-4 at the FT line on front ends in the final minute and kissed home a stepback runner off the glass that was well defended from 15 feet out. UM probably clinched an at-large bid with the upset as a 10-point underdog. Gamblers backing the Hurricanes to win outright cashed +425 tickets (paid $425 on $100 wagers).

-- Florida doesn?t lose at Coleman Coliseum these days. The Gators fell behind 6-0 at Alabama last night, but they erased that deficit and then some with the quickness. UF outscored the Crimson Tide 37-12 the rest of the first half for a 19-point intermission lead. They?d go on to win a seventh straight in Tuscaloosa thanks to Jalen Hudson, the transfer from Virginia Tech who scored 27 points on just 13 FGAs. Egor Koulechov added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while KeVaughn Allen finished with 13 points. Chris Chiozza scored only four points, but he had nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Alabama has lost four in a row both SU and ATS, going down by double-digit margins three times. Avery Johnson?s team closes the regular season Saturday at Texas A&M.

-- With the 125 combined points easily remaining ?under? the 138.5-point total in UF?s win, the ?under improved to 8-1 in the Gators? past nine games. The ?under? is now 19-10 overall for ?Bama, 12-3 in its home contests.

-- UMass star guard Luwane Pipkins (concussion) was upgraded to ?probable? early this morning for tonight?s Atlantic-10 showdown at Richmond. Pipkins is the A-10?s leading scorer (21.5 PPG) and averages 4.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game for the Minutemen. Matt McCall?s team has lost five games in a row, but it has at least covered the spread in two of its past three outings. The ?over? has hit in nine games in a row for the Minutemen, who were a four-point road underdog to the Spiders early this morning.

-- As we noted Tuesday, Northwestern?s Vic Law (12.0 PPG, 5.8 RPG) was downgraded to ?doubtful? for Thursday?s Big Ten Tournament second-round game vs. Penn St. at MSG in NYC. On the bright side, though, the Wildcats? Bryant McIntosh (12.0 PPG, 5.1 APG) was upgraded to ?probable? Wednesday morning despite dealing with a shoulder injury.

-- St. Bonaventure beat Davidson 117-113 last night in triple overtime, miraculously covering the spread as a 2.5-point home favorite thanks to a pair of FTs with 0.7 seconds remaining. The Wildcats were up three early in the third OT when star Peyton Aldridge, who had broken a school-record with 45 points, fouled out on a super-sketchy call as he simply appeared to be working for post position on the block without doing anything to elicit a whistle. The Bonnies extended their school-record winning streak to 11 games dating back to an 83-73 loss at Davidson on Jan. 19. Jaylen Adams led the winners with 34 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals before fouling out after playing 49 minutes. Brown?s fellow senior backcourt mate, Matt Mobley, played all 55 minutes and scored 33 points. Courtney Stockard had 31 points to give the Bonnies? a trio of players with more than 30 points, which was the first time that had happed in college basketball in 20 years. Davidson freshman Kellan Grady scored a career-high 39 points. This kid Grady is going to be a star for Bob McKillop?s program.

-- Tuesday?s Biggest Bubble Winners: St. Bonaventure, Missouri, Miami and Baylor.

-- Tuesday?s Biggest Bubble Losers: Boise State, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Kansas State and Alabama.

-- Vermont star Anthony Lamb returned to the court last night for the first time since Dec. 21. Lamb, who is averaging 16.0 points and 5.8 rebounds in 14 games this year, was limited to 11 minutes of playing time. The sophomore forward scored five points and had three rebounds, hitting a 3-pointer and both of his FT attempts.

-- Boston College is 4-1 ATS with three outright wins in five games as a home underdog. The Eagles were one-point home ?dogs for tonight?s ACC tussle with Syracuse as of early this a.m.

Rivalry game between USC and UCLA has bubble implications
February 28, 2018

A look at things to watch this week in the Pac-12 Conference:

GAME OF THE WEEK: UCLA at USC, Saturday. Rivalry games are always intense. This one could have an intensity boost with both teams on the NCAA Tournament bubble. The Trojans (21-9, 12-5) appear to be in decent shape after winning their past four games, including a Utah-Colorado road sweep. The Bruins (19-10, 10-7) may still have some work to do after losing to Utah and Colorado. UCLA won the Southern California rivals' first meeting on Feb. 3, edging the Trojans 82-79 after Aaron Holiday and Thomas Welsh combined for 44 points. USC also is playing for a coveted first-round bye in next week's Pac-12 tournament and is a half-game behind Arizona for the conference lead.

LOOKING AHEAD: Arizona has become a program in disarray. Coach Sean Miller has not coached the team or been to practice since an ESPN report said the FBI has him on a wiretap discussing a $100,000 payment to current freshman Deandre Ayton. Lorenzo Romar has filled in to lead the Wildcats and it's unclear if Miller will return or be fired. Arizona star guard Allonzo Trier also has been eligible the past two games after testing positive for the same banned substance that cost him 19 games last season. The Wildcats still have the Pac-12 lead, but face an uncertain future. They play Stanford and Cal this week.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Ayton is on pace to become the first freshman and sixth player overall to lead the Pac-12 in scoring and rebounding. He is tops with 19.9 points and 11.2 rebounds. ... Washington State has made 313 3-pointers this season, becoming the seventh team in conference history to hit at least 300 3s in a season. ... Arizona State's Tra Holder is 11 free throws made and 15 attempts of entering the Pac-12's top 10 in both categories.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Reid Travis, Stanford. Ayton and UCLA's Aaron Holiday appear to be the frontrunners for Pac-12 player of the year, but don't count out Travis. The Cardinal forward is having a stellar junior season, averaging 19.3 points on 53 percent shooting and 7.9 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Washington on his way to becoming the Pac-12 player of the week.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE: No. 6 Oregon won its first Pac-12 title since 2000 by sweeping the Arizona schools alst week. That gave the Ducks the top seed and a first-round bye in this week's conference tournament in Seattle. Oregon is the favorite to win the tournament, which starts Thursday, but the bracket will not be easy with No. 10 Oregon State, No. 9 UCLA, No. 16 Stanford and Arizona State in the way.

Dinero Tracker - Feb. 28
February 28, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 3-3 | NCAA BB: 13-9

Entering the final day in February, things are starting to get serious. Tuesday's action delivered a couple of the best college games we've seen all season with Miami and UNC trading 3-point bombs in a classic in Chapel Hill and St. Bonaventure moving closer to an NCAA Tournament bid by surviving Davidson in 3 OTs. Both sets of guarantees came in, but the freebie failed. Here is Tuesday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

WEDNESDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Nevada/UNLV OVER 164

It's Senior Night at Thomas & Mack, where they're expecting a Red Out for Senior Night for Jovan Mooring and Milwaukee transfer Jordan Johnson. Mooring is questionable but likely to play, which means we're going to see a blistering pace here. The Wolf Pack can really do damage in transition, while the Rebels should feast inside aginst Nevada's lack of size. UNLV won in Reno 86-78 to open the month and just played a 91-90 game at the Pit that they narrowly won on a putback. Consider that these teams combined for 164 in their previous meeting despite shooting a combined 15-for-49 from 3-point range. Expect this number to be topped and ride the over.

Result: Chicago was even at the break and actually led briefly in the third quarter before wilting. Kris Dunn and Lauri Markkanen are definitely struggling and largely contributed to the Bulls' demise as they fell 118-103. Dwight Howard piled on by hitting 4-for-5 from the stripe.

TUESDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Nuggets/Clippers OVER 229

There's a rumor Paul Millsap is going to try to play tonight, but even if he does, it shouldn't have too large an impact here. The Nuggets are going to try and play through Nikola Jokic and get up and down the floor, while the Clippers should be able to hang with the pace since their guards aren?t particularly adept at playing defense as it is. Expect a shootout and ride the over, guaranteed.

Result: Millsap logged over 23 minutes off the bench, but couldn't prevent the Nuggets from falling 122-120 after a 41-point explosion from the Clippers in the fourth. The 73 combined points in the final quarter helped us clear this total rather comfortably, but I'd be lying if I said I expected Boban Marjanovic to help us get there by making eight of nine from the field. He came up huge, pun intended, against Jokic.

TUESDAY'S OTHER LOCK

The pick: Missouri +1.5/UNDER 144

Cuonzo Martin has seen his Tigers drop three straight, squandering a position of strength in a competitive SEC race and falling back to .500. With Michael Porter potentially returning to play a key role, putting together a strong finish could land them an NCAA Tournament berth if Mizzou can put together a strong finish. Look for desperation to play a valuable role in Nashville against a vulnerable Vandy squad that is the league's doormat this season. Ride Missouri +1.5, guaranteed. For the in-game parlay, ride the under.

Result: I noticed a lot of love given to Vandy and didn't get it. This line actually went to 2. Although the Commodores did some nice things early on the offensive end, Mizzou was able to clamp down and largely controlled its 74-66 win. Hit the under too.

BAD BEAT BULLETIN

The pick: Oklahoma State/Iowa State OVER 151.5

The Cyclones will get back Donovan Jackson after he attended his father?s funeral over the weekend, so they?ll be deeper than they have been after suffering through a lot of misfortune over the past few weeks. Considering their style of play, I just don?t see them having enough legs to hold off the Cowboys, who have beaten West Virginia in Morgantown and Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse. That means you know they won?t be by Hilton Magic in Ames, so expect a road win in a high-scoring affair. Back Oklahoma State on the money line and ride the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: The Cowboys won 80-71, coming up a point shy of where we needed this game to be in order to come through on an in-game parlay. Oklahoma State led 48-43 at the break, so this looked fantastic given the projected second-half pace. Jeffrey Carroll's 3-pointer with 1:13 left made it 80-69, but the final few possessions featured the following: One layup, one missed 3-pointer, 0-for-3 free-throw shooting and two turnovers and the final 20 seconds being frustratingly dribbled out. Yuck.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Arkansas/Auburn OVER 161

It's tough to envision this game not featuring over 160 points since both should break the 80-point mark. Both press all game, which means that we should see whoever is trailing down the stretch resort to the foul game to extend things since it's unlikely this will be a one-possession game in which there are many lulls. Ride the over.

Result: The Hogs hit seven of their 10 3-point attempts in the first half to raced out to a 52-42 lead. Auburn shot below 35 percent for the game, but hung around enough to maintain a brisk pace in the second half. A Jared Harper jumper made it 84-78 with 3:05 left, delivering the over.

UPSET CITY

The pick: Miami +10.5

It's important for the Hurricanes to show up in Chapel Hill and not get blown out, which Jim Larranaga should be able to accomplish. He's excellent at helping his team on the road, which is why the 'Canes have won in N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. North Carolina will make their runs, but this will likely wind up closer than expected. Take the points and ride Miami.

Result: Jaquan Newton's 3-point heave helped the Hurricanes avoid a second-half collapse after Joel Berry tied the game with his own deep shot with 4.1 seconds left. Miami avoided OT in a huge 91-88 that makes it an NCAA Tournament lock, and although I don't think they would've fallen by double-digits in an extra session, it was very nice to avoid the possibility.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Heat +1

These teams are squaring off for the third time this month and will see each other again on March 8, so they'll be really good friends by then. The 76ers won both meetings in Philly, part of a 2-8 run that has tripped the Heat up and has dropped them to eighth in the Eastern Conference. They'll need Hassan Whiteside and Bam Adebayo to make Joel Embiid work, but considering they also have bodies to throw at Ben Simmons, who has been fantastic against them thus far, the Heat have enough to hold serve at home. Ride Miami.

Result: Dwyane Wade turned back the clock with a vintage performance, scoring 15 of the Heat's last 17 points in a 102-101 comeback win. The last of his 27 points came on a contested jumper with 5.9 seconds remaining, but we still weren't out of the woods until J.J. Redick came up empty on a wide-open 3-pointer that would've beaten both the Heat and our wager had he not misfired.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: High Point -13

Longwood College is one of the worst teams I've seen all season, so considering that High Point just saw them come through town and this is a one-and-done playoff game, the Panthers will come out taking no prisoners. Jahaad Proctor averaged 19.5 points in two wins against the Lancers this season and should help put this away. Ride High Point in a convincing win in the Big South First Round.

Result: Longwood hadn't won since Jan. 15 before dominating at High Point to advance, winning 68-55. The Lancers had lost a dozen straight.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: St. Bonaventure ML -135, Bonnies/Davidson OVER 145

It's Senior Night for Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley, so this is going to be an incredibly difficult game for the Wildcats to pull out. Davidson handed the Bonnies their last loss way back on Jan. 19, but there has since been a 10-game run to pull Mark Schmidt's team firmly onto the NCAA Tournament bubble despite what's been a down year in the Atlantic. 10. Ride St. Bonaventure on the money line and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: This game offers proof of precisely why I prefer money lines whenever possible. This game was fantastic, lasting three overtimes and featuring one big shot and momentum swing after another, so imagine what it would've been like if St. Bonaventure had won by just two points when it was laying 2.5 at most shops. Talk about an empty feeling after investing all that emotion watching teams trade blows for 55 minutes. The Bonnies covered when Davidson fouled with about one second left, winning 117-113 in an instant classic. Adams, Mobley and Courtney Stockard combined for 98 points. Peyton Aldridge and Kelan Grady teamed up to score 84 points for the Wildcats.
