CINCINNATI (AP) Trevon Bluiett scored 23 points in his final game at the Cintas Center, and No. 3 Xavier never trailed while beating Providence 84-74 on Wednesday night, clinching at least a share of its first Big East championship.

The Musketeers (26-4, 14-3) can win it outright by beating DePaul on Saturday and end Villanova's run of four straight regular season titles.

Bluiett will leave Xavier as its second all-time scorer. He made the game's first basket on a driving layup, and finished off the Friars with a dunk and a pair of free throws in the final minute. Quentin Goodin added 18 points, one shy of his career high.

Providence (18-12, 9-8) waqs led by Maliek White with 15 points.

---

No. 4 VILLANOVA 69, SETON HALL 68, OT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Mikal Bridges scored 23 points, Jalen Brunson made big plays down the stretch and No. 4 Villanova avoided consecutive losses for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Brunson, who was 1 of 8 from the field midway through the second half, finished with 14 points, including two free throws in the waning seconds of overtime to give Villanova (26-4, 13-4 Big East) a 69-66 lead.

Khadeen Carrington closed out the scoring with two free throws with a second to play to finish off a 23-point night for Seton Hall (20-10, 9-8), However, he also missed a free throw with 11.6 seconds left in regulation that could have given the Pirates a late one-point lead.

---

No. 18 CLEMSON 76, FLORIDA STATE 63

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Marcquise Reed scored 22 points and Clemson won a program-record 11th Atlantic Coast Conference game.

The Tigers (22-7, 11-6) had won 10 league games six times in 64 years as ACC members, but have never before won this many conference games in a regular season.

Florida State (19-10, 8-9) closed to 64-61 on Phil Cofer's 3-pointer with 2:58 remaining, but got no closer.

Gabe DeVoe had 13 points while Shelton Mitchell and Elijah Thomas had 11 points each for the Tigers.

Cofer led the Seminoles with 21 points.

---

No. 21 NEVADA 101, UNLV 75

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Cody Martin scored 26 and Jordan Caroline added 22 to lead Nevada to an easy victory over UNLV.

Martin, who was 10 of 18 from the field, also had nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals as the rivals split their regular season meetings.

Caleb Martin added 19 points for the Wolf Pack, who converted nine of their first 13 three-point attempts to pull away early on the Rebels' Senior Night.

Nevada (26-5, 15-2 Mountain West Conference) had clinched the conference regular season title outright on Tuesday when second-place Boise State lost at San Diego State.

Kendall Stephens had 14 points and Josh Hall had 10 points for the winners, who have won the conference for the second straight year.

Brandon McCoy led UNLV (19-11, 8-9) with 19 points and 17 rebounds, while Shakur Juiston added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

---

Green had two 3-pointers and a layup during the run that provided an 82-69 lead with 6:40 remaining.

Terence Davis had 26 points for the Rebels (12-18, 5-12), who lost for the ninth time in 11 games.

---

No. 25 HOUSTON 69, SMU 56

DALLAS (AP) - Rob Gray had 19 points and nine assists and Corey Davis Jr. added 17 points to lead Houston.

The Cougars (23-6, 13-4 American) have won seven of eight games and are a half-game behind second-place Wichita State.

SMU (16-14, 6-11) has lost seven of eight games since leading scorer Shake Milton was sidelined with a hand injury.

Jahmal McMurray scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half to lead the Mustangs.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Six highest-paid college basketball coaches:

1) Mike Krzyzewski, Duke: $8,982,325

2) John Calipari, Kentucky: $7,994,147

3) Chris Holtmann, Ohio State: $7,149,849

4) Bill Self, Kansas: $4,954,877

5) Tom Izzo, Michigan State: $4,359,979

6) Sean Miller, Arizona: $4,054,853

Quote of the Day

?I will never turn my back on you. EVER! You are one of the best coaches I?ve ever had and easily the best person I?ve ever come in contact with!???
TJ McConnell, talking about his college coach, Arizona?s Sean Miller

Tuesday?s quiz
Ulysses S Grant?s picture is on the $50 bill.

**************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) St Bonaventure 117, Davidson 113, 3OT? Probably the best college hoop game this season was played Tuesday night; five players scored 30+ points. Six players fouled out. These teams are lined up to meet again in the A-14 semi-finals next week in Washington, DC.

12) Speaking of which, this is a year where several conference tournaments are in unusual places; ACC is in Brooklyn, Big 14 is in Manhattan, A-14 is in Washington, SEC is in St Louis.

11) One of the things about college basketball is that once you beat a team, you need that team to do well, so it helps your power rating.

Case in point: Boise State will be a bubble team if they don?t win the Mountain West- they?ve got a win at Oregon, so it would greatly help the Broncos if Oregon could work its way into the top 60 or even higher.

10) NIT will have some experimental rules this season; games will be four quarters, and 3-point arc will be moved out a little bit. The four-quarter thing looks like it will happen at some point in men?s basketball, maybe 2019-20? the women?s game already plays four quarters.

9) All-time major league record for pinch-hit home runs:
Matt Stairs 23, Cliff Johnson 20, Jerry Lynch 18.

Stairs is the new hitting coach for San Diego- he was the Phillies? hitting coach last year.

8) Shareef O?Neal (Shaq?s son) quickly moved on from Arizona to UCLA for his college choice.

4) Took the NFL about 90 minutes to move on from Papa John?s to Pizza Hut as official pizza of the league; best thing about this? Lot fewer Peyton Manning commercials.

7) Mark Few makes $1,934,104 a year at Gonzaga; he is happy where he is, and you can?t buy happy, but he is leaving a lot of money on the table. If Few let it be known that he wanted to be a much higher-paid coach, lot of the big-money schools would be lining up pretty quickly.

6) Chicago Bears will cut backup QB Mike Glennon after only one year and four starts; Glennon made $18.5M for his time in the Windy City, so hard to feel bad for the guy.

5) There were two upsets in the NEC tournament last night; #2-seed Mt St Mary lost to Robert Morris, and #3-seed St Francis PA lost to FDU, first time since 2003 that the #2-3 seeds both lost in the first round.

3) If you?re Sam Darnold, why wouldn?t you throw at the NFL Combine? Quarterbacks shouldn?t back away from any challenges/competition.

2) Random question: if UConn hired Geno Auriemma to be its men?s basketball coach next year, how would he do? Huskies will probably make a coaching change; their program is a mess right now, going 30-33 the last two years.

1? Someone ran a poll on Twitter the other day, asking who was the most influential teacher they have ever had. It got hundreds of responses, some of which were ?none? but it was cool to see that most people were grateful to teachers who helped them when they were younger.

Lot of time kids graduate and go on their way and never thank the people who helped them.

No. 9 Wisconsin vs. No. 8 Maryland (BTN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

The Badgers have reached the Sweet 16 in each of the past four seasons, but their only ticket back to the NCAA tournament is running the table in New York City the next four days. Wisconsin started Big 10 play at 3-9, but put together a solid finish by winning four of the final six games. The Badgers have covered their last four contests, including underdog wins over Purdue and Northwestern.

The Terrapins never won more than two games in a row in Big 10 play, as they lost the season finale to Michigan by 24 points. Maryland held off Wisconsin in its only matchup this season in College Park, 68-63 in early February, but failed to cash as seven-point favorites. The Terps and Badgers have never met in the Big 10 tournament as Maryland is 2-1 SU/ATS in its opening round game in this tournament.

No. 12 Iowa vs. No. 5 Michigan (BTN, 2:30 p.m. ET)

Iowa extended its season by outlasting Illinois on Wednesday, 96-87, topping the 90-point mark for the fourth time against conference opponents. The Hawkeyes have won two straight since a six-game skid, while trying to avenge a pair of regular season losses to Michigan. Iowa won a Big 10 tournament game for the first time since 2013, as the Hawkeyes lost in the following game to Michigan State, but covered as six-point 'dogs.

The Wolverines are basically a lock for the NCAA tournament, as Michigan seeks its second consecutive Big 10 tournament championship. Since losing to Northwestern in early February, Michigan has run off five consecutive wins and covers, including road victories at Penn State and Maryland. The Wolverines covered in all four victories in last season's conference tournament, while facing Iowa in this tourney for the first time since 2010.

No. 10 Northwestern vs. No. 7 Penn State (BTN, 6:30 p.m. ET)

The Wildcats reached their first ever NCAA tournament last season but are far from an at-large bid this time around. Northwestern could never create consistency during Big 10 play, punctuated by a six-game losing skid to close out conference play. In that stretch, the Wildcats posted a 1-5 ATS mark, including losses to Wisconsin, Maryland, and Rutgers as a favorite.

The Nittany Lions have plenty to play for this week at Madison Square Garden after suffering three straight losses to end Big 10 play. Penn State had won six of seven, including a sweep of Ohio State before setbacks to Purdue, Michigan, and Nebraska. The Nittany Lions and Wildcats split a pair of matchups this season with the home team winning each time, as neither team has ever won the Big 10 tournament.

No. 14 Rutgers vs. No. 6 Indiana (BTN, 9:00 p.m. ET)

The Scarlet Knights picked up a win in the Big 10 tournament for the second straight season after downing Minnesota on Wednesday, 65-54. Rutgers won its first game away from Piscataway this season on Wednesday, while improving to 4-4 ATS in the last eight games. The Scarlet Knights are looking to avenge a 65-43 home loss to Indiana in early February, dropping to 0-5 against the Hoosiers since entering the conference in 2014.

Indiana was the top ATS team in the Big 10 down the stretch by covering 12 of its final 15 games, including a 6-0 SU/ATS mark as a favorite. The Hoosiers enter the Big 10 tournament off consecutive losses to Nebraska and Ohio State, while compiling a 3-6 record away from Bloomington in conference action.

No. 13 Illinois vs. No. 12 Iowa (BTN, 5:30 p.m. ET)

Following a 6-0 start to the season, Illinois won eight of its final 25 games, including four victories in Big 10 play. The Fighting Illini closed the season by splitting their last four games, capped off by a road victory over last-place Rutgers. Illinois suffered three overtime losses to conference foes, including a 104-97 home setback to Iowa on January 11 as 4.5-point favorites.

The Hawkeyes snapped a six-game skid by knocking off Northwestern in the season finale, 77-70. Iowa won only one road game in Big 10 action by beating Illinois, while compiling 1-8 ATS mark away from Iowa City in conference action. Both teams put together 4-14 conference marks as these teams are meeting in the Big 10 tournament for the first time since 2016 when the Fighting Illini edged the Hawkeyes, 68-66 as 10.5-point 'dogs.

Totals: 15-15 O/U
No. 14 Rutgers vs. No. 11 Minnesota (BTN, 8:00 p.m. ET)

Minnesota turned into the biggest disappointment in the Big 10 following a 24-win season in 2017 and an NCAA tournament appearance. The Golden Gophers jumped out to a 13-3 start prior to a dismal 2-13 finish, including one win since January 16. Minnesota wrapped up Big 10 play at 1-8 SU and 2-7 ATS away from Minneapolis, but one of its four conference victories came against Rutgers in early December, 89-67.

For the third consecutive season, the Scarlet Knights finished in last place of the Big 10, but picked up their most wins in conference play with three. None of those victories came away from Piscataway, as Rutgers scored 60 points or less in seven of nine road conference contests. Rutgers has won only once in the Big 10 tournament in its three-year stay in the conference, upsetting Ohio State last season in the opening round. Minnesota defeated Rutgers in the opening game of the Big 10 tournament in 2015 as 10.5-point favorites, 80-68.

Big 10 Tournament Best Bets
February 27, 2018

The Big Ten Tournament gets underway on Wednesday, as the conference decided playing at Madison Square Garden in New York was worth a compact regular season schedule. Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State and Michigan are already assured of getting an NCAA Tourney bid, while nine other teams are probably already out of contention.

What that means is that one team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, has everything to gain or to lose in this tournament, as they are squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Let?s look at the latest odds to win the Big Ten Tournament, a preview and predictions.

Big 10 Tournament
Date and Time: Wednesday, February 28 ? Sunday, March 4, 2018
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
Big 10 Tournament TV Coverage: CBS, Big Ten Network

Odds to Win Big Ten Tournament (from BookMaker.eu)
Michigan State +145
Purdue +188
Michigan +415
Ohio State +670
Nebraska +2250
Penn State +2500
Indiana +5500
Maryland +5000
Wisconsin +5500
Iowa +15000
Northwestern +9000
Minnesota +12000
Illinois +20000
Rutgers +50000

Top Contenders

There are four teams that should vie for the tournament title. Michigan State won the regular season title, so they are a slight favorite over Purdue and Ohio State who finished tied for second. Michigan finished in third. We?ll start with Michigan who has a strong RPI of 23 and is looking to finish the regular season with 25 wins. The Wolverines have won five straight games overall and they are very capable of beating Michigan State in a likely semifinal matchup.

Ohio State is fourth in the betting odds and they haven?t looked that great in recent weeks and even their wins against Rutgers and Indiana to end the season don?t inspire much confidence.

The team that probably should be favored to win the tournament is Purdue. They have an RPI of 9 and they should be in line for a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Purdue should have Vincent Edwards back at full strength and they should be playing in the tourney final.

Michigan State is ranked highly in the polls but their numbers are not as strong as Purdue or Michigan. The Spartans are just 15th in RPI and they really don?t look like a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tourney. The problem with going against them is that they have Miles Bridges, Cassius Winston and Jaren Jackson Jr. They also have a coach in Tom Izzo who knows how to win.

Dark Horses

Penn State is probably not going to make the NCAA Tourney unless they go on a huge run in the Big Ten tourney. They have a poor RPI and even getting to the final probably won?t be enough. Maryland is not in much better shape with an RPI of 64, so they need to win the tournament to get a bid. The true darkhorse and the most interesting team is Nebraska. They have an RPI of just 61 but they get a double-bye into the quarterfinals. They just need to win two games to get to the final and that might be enough to get them an NCAA Tourney bid.

Long Shots

Perhaps Wisconsin should be in the darkhorse category but it is hard to get too excited about a team with a losing record playing away from home. Northwestern has the look of a team that has given up on the season so they also have to be put into this category along with the bottom feeders.

Big Ten Tournament Free Picks

The first round should have Iowa beating Illinois and Minnesota getting past Rutgers. The second round game between Wisconsin and Maryland is a toss-up, while Michigan should beat Iowa. Northwestern vs. Penn State is another toss-up, while Indiana is no guarantee to win the 6-11 game.

Michigan State should win their quarterfinal game, Michigan could struggle against Nebraska in the quarterfinals, but will probably win, Ohio State should survive their matchup, and Purdue should roll in their quarterfinal. A semifinal between Michigan State and Michigan would be superb and could go either way, while Purdue should dominate their semifinal. Purdue is the pick to win the title against either Michigan State or Michigan.

Texas hosts West Virginia looking to boost NCAA hopes
March 1, 2018

A look at the upcoming weekend around the Big 12:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: West Virginia at Texas. The Longhorns have lost five of seven and are on the verge of falling out of NCAA Tournament contention. A win over the 20th-ranked Mountaineers would be an enormous boost to their resume. West Virginia, on the other hand, would clinch a second-place finish in the league with a victory.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE WEEKEND:
Oklahoma, which has dropped seven of eight, hosts last-place Iowa State in a rare Friday night matchup in the Big 12. Should the Sooners fall to the depleted and defeated Cyclones - who will finish at least two games behind every else in the league - an NCAA Tournament bid would suddenly seem doubtful. Baylor and Kansas State meet in Manhattan on Saturday and TCU and Texas Tech meet in Lubbock, with the Red Raiders seeking to snap a four-game losing skid. Oklahoma State hosts Kansas with a chance for a rare season sweep of the Jayhawks. Should that happen, the Cowboys would head to the league tournament in Kansas City knowing that a run might result in an unlikely NCAA tournament bid.

PLAYER TO WATCH:
Kenrich Williams, TCU. Williams is averaging 13 points a game and is second in the league with 9.3 rebounds per outing. Williams is also averaging 4.1 assists and is shooting 41.6 percent on 3s. The Horned Frogs likely wouldn't be making their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 20 years without his production and leadership.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: With a strong shooting performance against Tech, TCU has a chance to finish the regular season above 50 percent. The Horned Frogs enter the weekend at 50.3 percent, with Kansas at 49.7 percent. ...Despite its recent woes, Tech is still second in the league in scoring margin at plus-11.4. ...Iowa State will likely end the season as the only team to score less than their opponents. The Cyclones, down starters Nick Weiler-Babb and Solomon Young for the season, are getting outscored by 1.9 points a game. ...West Virginia leads the league in blocked shots, steals and free throw percentage.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE:
The league tournament begins on Friday when Kansas State and Kansas square off, followed by Iowa State and Texas Tech. Baylor is the top seed after going 18-0 in league play, and Texas is the two seed. West Virginia is seeded sixth, just like it was a year ago when it stunned three ranked teams to win the tournament.

Big Ten Conference Tournament Second Round betting preview and odds

Penn State's sophomore guard Tony Carr was a consensus All-Big Ten first team selection after leading the conference with 20.1 points to go along with 4.9 assists per game.

The Second Round of the Big Ten Tournament tips off Thursday afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York as ranked teams look to secure higher seeds and bubble teams hope to stamp their dance ticket or else their bubble could burst on Selection Sunday.

Tournament to be played at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York.

Wisconsin Badgers vs Maryland Terrapins (-2, 130.5)

Wisconsin takes on Maryland in the first game of the second round of the Big Ten tournament in Madison Square Garden Thursday, with both teams desperate for wins to build their resumes for postseason consideration. The ninth-seeded Badgers, who have reached the final of this tournament three times in the last five seasons, have to make a surprising run to extend their current streak of NCAA appearances to 20, while the Terrapins will need at least a couple victories -- if not more -- to be included in the NCAA field this season.

Forward Ethan Happ is the centerpiece for Wisconsin coach Greg Gard, leading the Badgers in scoring (17.9 points per game), rebounding (8.2), assists (3.8), steals (1.5) and blocks (1). Freshman guard Brad Davison (12.1 points, team-high 58 3-pointers) has shown a lot of moxie despite playing with a shoulder injury that sometimes causes his shoulder to separate -- as it did in the Badgers' most recent outing, though Davison finished with a career-high 30 points. Wisconsin has won four of its last six thanks to the reemergence of sophomore guard Brevin Pritzl, who had a mid-season slump but has broken out offensively in the past six contests. The Badgers have held their last four opponents -- Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern and Michigan State -- to an average of 15.8 points below their season scoring averages.

The Terrapins' offense is one that attacks from the perimeter, led by guard Anthony Cowan Jr. (15.7 points) and Kevin Huerter (14.6), who have hit 53 and 72 3-pointers, respectively. In the only meeting of the regular season between the two teams in early February, the Terrapins won 68-63 thanks to 42 points from the duo and holding Happ and Davison to combined 12-of-29 shooting from the field. Maryland F/C Bruno Fernando leads all Big Ten freshmen in shooting percentage, hitting 58.5 percent from the field.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Michigan Wolverines (OFF)

No. 13 Michigan made a miracle run to win last year's Big Ten Tournament and begins defense of its crown when it faces 12th-seeded Iowa on Thursday in a second-round game at New York's Madison Square Garden. The fifth-seeded Wolverines are a certainty to make this season's NCAA Tournament field no matter what happens in the conference tourney.

Michigan finished the regular season with five consecutive wins and coach John Beilein is trying to stir up the same kind of desperation that fueled last season's run when the Wolverines became the lowest seed (No. 8) to win the Big Ten Tournament. Junior forward Moritz Wagner received second-team All-Big Ten honors while leading the team in scoring (14.4) and rebounding (7.2) and he is 39 points away from joining 52 others in school history to reach 1,000 career points. Junior guard Charles Matthews (13 per game) and senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (12.3) also average in double digits for a team that ranks eighth in the conference at 74.3 points per game.

Iowa recorded a 96-87 victory over Illinois in Wednesday's first round for its first Big Ten Tournament victory since 2013. The Hawkeyes have won two straight following a six-game slide that prompted speculation over the future of eighth-year coach Fran McCaffery. Sophomore forward Tyler Cook boasts team-best averages of 15.4 points and 6.8 rebounds and he averaged 19 points and eight rebounds against the Wolverines this season.

TRENDS:

* Michigan is 10-2-1 ATS in its last 13 neutral site games.
* Over is 5-0 in Iowa's last five neurtal site games.
* Over is 4-1 in Michigan's last 10 overall.
* Favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings

Northwestern Wildcats vs Penn St. Nittany Lions (-5.5, 132.5)

Seventh-seeded Penn State will take on No. 10 Northwestern in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday in New York City. The Nittany Lions wrapped up the regular season with three consecutive losses to fall out of the NCAA Tournament picture and hope to play their way back into contention with a deep run in the conference tournament.

Penn State cruised past the Wildcats 78-63 in the first meeting of the season before suffering a 70-61 setback on Jan. 20 and strive to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2015. Sophomore guard Tony Carr was a consensus All-Big Ten first team selection after leading the conference with 20.1 points to go along with 4.9 assists per game.

Northwestern has dropped six consecutive games, including a 77-70 loss to Iowa on Sunday to end a disappointing regular season. The Wildcats, who returned most of their core players from the team that earned the first NCAA Tournament berth in program history last year, struggled under the weight of expectations and hope to avoid their first losing season since 2014-15. Vic Law, who is averaging 12 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season, will miss the Big Ten Tournament with a toe problem while senior guard Bryant McIntosh will play through a shoulder injury, which caused him to miss two games in February.

BETTING STATS:

2dloz00.jpg

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Penn St. opened as big 7-point favorites for its opening game of the Big Ten tourney, but Northwestern action has pushed that pointspread down to 5.5 as of Thursday morning. The total hit betting boards at 132 and bumped up slightly to 132.5 overnight.

MATCHUP CHART:

1zlu82o.jpg

TRENDS:

* Wildcats are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. Big Ten.
* Nittany Lions are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
* Over is 6-1 in Wildcats last 7 neutral site games.
* Over is 11-5 in Nittany Lions last 16 vs. Big Ten.
* Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs Indiana Hoosiers (OFF)

Indiana knows that its only path into the NCAA Tournament is to win four games in four days and the sixth-seeded Hoosiers begin tackling that assignment when they face 14th-seeded Rutgers in Thursday's second round of the Big Ten Tournament at New York's Madison Square Garden. Indiana finished the regular season with back-to-back losses and is just 4-8 away from home this season.

Rutgers advanced with a 65-54 first-round victory over Minnesota on Wednesday and the Scarlet Knights haven't forgotten how poorly they fared in a 65-43 home loss against Indiana on Feb. 5. "Last time we played them, our defense wasn't up to par," junior guard Corey Sanders said in a postgame interview on the Big Ten Network. "If we get our defense up to par and let our offense come, I think we'll be great." Sanders, who averages a team-leading 14.6 points, recorded 23 points and seven rebounds in the victory over Minnesota for his seventh 20-point outing of the season and 18th of his career.

Junior forward Juwan Morgan and Johnson will both have to be in top form for the Hoosiers to meander their way through the bracket to the championship game. Morgan, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, leads the Hoosiers in scoring (16.6) and rebounding (7.3), while Johnson (14.9) recently matched the school single-game record with nine 3-pointers and ranks fourth (236) on the program's career list. Freshman forward Justin Smith (6.5) has provided a recent boost with four straight double-digit outings - he is averaging 15 points during the stretch - after having just four over the first 26 games.

Thursday's Wagers
March 1, 2018

**Northwestern vs. Penn State**

-- This is a 7/10 showdown in the second round of the 2018 Big Ten Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. As of early this morning, most betting shops had seventh-seeded Penn State (19-12 straight up, against the spread) listed as a 5.5-point favorite. The winner will advance to face second-seeded Ohio State in Friday?s quarterfinals.

-- PSU is led by sophomore guard Tony Carr, who was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection after leading the league in scoring with a 20.1 points-per-game average. Carr has also led the Nittany Lions in assists (4.8 APG), 3-point accuracy (45.8%) and free-throw percentage (81.2%). Lamar Stevens is averaging 15.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game, while Mike Watkins averages 12.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game. Watkins, who was ?questionable? due to a knee injury as of early this morning, has been limited to 14 minutes of playing time in his team?s past three contests. He sat out Sunday?s loss at Nebraska.

-- Penn State is No. 87 in the RPI Rankings, posting a 2-3 record against the RPI Top 25, a 2-5 mark versus the Top 50 and a 4-8 ledger against the Top 100. PSU swept the season series from Ohio State, the No. 18 team in the RPI, but its only other Top-100 wins came at home over Nebraska and Maryland. The Nittany Lions also have a home win over a solid mid-major in Montana (#102 RPI). They have four bad losses: vs. Wisconsin, at Indiana, vs. Minnesota and at Northwestern.

-- Pat Chambers?s team lost 76-64 Sunday in Lincoln and the final score was misleading as to how lopsided this matchup was. After winning four straight games and six of seven, PSU has dropped three in a row heading into Gotham. Carr scored 27 points against the Cornhuskers, who led 34-17 at intermission and didn?t allow the Nittany Lions to get closer than 12 the rest of the way.

-- Penn State has played a pair of neutral-court games this year, beating Pittsburgh 85-54 and losing 98-87 to Texas A&M.

-- Northwestern (15-16 SU, 11-17 ATS) limps to the Big Apple sporting a six-game losing streak. Chris Collins?s team dropped a 77-70 decision in Sunday?s regular-season finale at Iowa. Scottie Lindsey tied a school record with nine 3-pointers in a career-best 32-point effort, but it wasn?t enough to prevent the Wildcats from falling to 1-5 ATS in their past six contests. Lindsey made 10-of-14 field goals and 9-of-11 from downtown. Barret Benson finished with eight points 10 rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and one steal.

-- Northwestern is No. 161 in the RPI with its 1-5 record vs. the Top 25, a 1-7 ledger against the Top 50 and a 2-11 mark versus the Top 100. The Wildcats? only wins of note came at home over Michigan and Penn State.

-- Northwestern?s Vic Law is ?out? with a foot injury. Law is averaging 12.0 points and 5.8 rebounds. Bryant McIntosh, who recently missed two games with a shoulder injury, will play through the pain but isn?t at 100 percent. McIntosh averages 12.0 points and 5.1 assists per game. Also, Gavin Skelly (6.1 PPG, 4.0 RPG) is ?questionable? due to an undisclosed injury.

-- Lindsey (15.3 PPG) is the Wildcats? leading scorer who is making 36.5 percent of his 3-balls and 82.5 percent of his free throws. Derek Pardon (11.2 PPG) leads Collins?s unit in rebounding (7.1 RPG), FG percentage (62.3%) and blocks (1.8 BPG).

-- When these teams met in Evanston on Jan. 29, Northwestern captured a 70-61 win as a three-point home ?chalk.? The Wildcats finished the game on a 15-2 run in the final six-plus minutes of play. The 131 combined points dipped ?under? the 137.5-poin total. The winners were led by Law, who tallied 18 points and five rebounds. Lindsey scored 13 points and grabbed five boards, while Pardon had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists without a turnover. Shep Garner scored a game-high 22 points for PSU on 6-of-11 accuracy from long distance.

-- The first meeting of the year went down on Jan. 5, with Penn State winning 78-63 as a 5.5-point home favorite. The 141 combined points jumped ?over? the 136.5-point tally. Stevens had 30 points for the Nittany Lions, who got 18 points, 17 rebounds and four rejections out of Watkins. Carr added 12 points, four boards and five assists compared to only one turnover. McIntosh was Northwestern?s only player in double figures with 18 points, as he drained 4-of-6 from 3-point land.

-- The ?over? is 7-3 in the past 10 head-to-head meetings in this rivalry.

-- The ?over? has hit in three consecutive games for PSU, but the ?under? has cashed at a 14-13 overall clip.

-- The ?under? is 17-11 overall for the Wildcats even though they?ve seen the ?over? cash in three straight games and four of their last five.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network.

**Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee**

-- If you?re looking to scout a pair of potential Cinderella stories in the NCAA Tournament, search no further than tonight?s Conference USA showdown in Murfreesboro. As of early this morning, most spots had Middle Tennessee (23-5 SU, 15-10 ATS) as a 4.5-point home favorite.

-- Kermit Davis?s club has won outright in 10 of its 11 home games, posting a 6-3 spread record. MT is 3-1 both SU and ATS in four games as a single-digit ?chalk.?

-- Middle Tennessee has won 10 consecutive games while producing a 7-3 ATS record, including three straight spread covers. The Blue Raiders are off a 79-54 win over UAB as a seven-point home favorite. Nick King led the way with 22 points and six rebounds, while Giddy Potts added 17 points, six boards and three assists. Potts buried 5-of-9 launches from 3-point land. Brandon Walters finished with 16 points in only 14 minutes of action.

-- When these teams met on Jan. 20 in Bowling Green, KY., Middle Tennessee captured a 66-62 win as a 5.5-point road underdog. The 128 combined points stayed ?under? the 140.5-point total. King dropped 28 points on the Hilltoppers by making 11-of-21 field-goal attempts. King also pulled down nine rebounds, while Potts scored 16 points. Dwight Coleby had 19 points and three blocked shots in the losing effort.

-- Middle Tennessee is No. 28 in the RPI Rankings and No. 24 in the latest Associated Press Top 25. The Blue Raiders are winless in a pair of games against RPI Top-25 opponents and three games versus Top-50 foes. They?re 3-4 against the Top 100, registering victories at WKU, at Murray State and at Old Dominion. Davis?s team went 2-1 against the SEC, winning at Vanderbilt and at home over Ole Miss. MT took three-neutral court losses to Auburn, USC and Miami, in addition to a home setback vs. Belmont and road defeat at Marshall.

-- King leads Middle Tennessee in scoring (21.5 PPG) and rebounding (8.3 RPG), while Potts is averaging 13.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. King is a grad transfer from Alabama who started his career at Memphis. He has enjoyed a breakout season with MT, scoring 25 points or more 10 times and breaking double figures in 28 of 29 games. King has five double-doubles in the Raiders? last seven outings.

-- Western Kentucky (22-7 SU, 18-9 ATS) is No. 54 in the RPI with its 1-1 record against the RPI Top 25, a 1-2 mark versus the Top 50 and a 4-3 ledger against the Top 100. The Hilltoppers had a strong showing at the Battle for Atlantis in the Bahamas over the Thanksgiving holidays. They defeated Purdue and SMU (when the Mustangs were at full strength) after losing 66-58 to Villanova in the opening round.

-- Western Ky. has won six straight games and has taken the cash in four consecutive contests. I backed the Hilltoppers as 3.5-point home favorites vs. Old Dominion on Saturday, and that was an easy winner. They raced out to a 16-point first-half lead, led by as many as 23 and coasted to an 88-66 triumph. Taveion Hollingsworth scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-13 FGAs, while Darius Thompson stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, two blocked shots, one steal and eight assists compared to just two turnovers. Justin Johnson finished with 19 points and 11 boards.

-- Western Ky. is 14-2 in C-USA play and can pull into a first-place tie with Middle Tennessee by picking up a road win tonight. WKU is 7-3 both SU and ATS in 10 true road assignments this year.

-- Rick Stansbury?s squad has an excellent blend of talent led by Johnson, a senior forward who paces the team in scoring (14.8 PPG), rebounding (9.4 RPG) and 3-point accuracy (41.7%). Thompson shares team-best scoring honors (14.8 PPG) with Johnson and dishes out a team-high 4.9 assists per game. Thompson, a grad transfer from Virginia, has a 143/51 assists-to-turnover ratio and averages 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. Hollingsworth, who is averaging 13.6 points PPG and nailing 40.3 percent of his treys, is a freshman guard who was Kentucky?s Mr. Basketball at Dunbar High School. Meanwhile, the 6?9? Coleby (11.9 PPG, 8.1 RPG & 1.8 BPG) is a grad transfer from Kansas.

-- The ?under ?is 13-12-2 overall for the ?Tops, but they?ve seen the ?over? go 6-4 in their road outings. Also, the ?over? is 4-1 in WKU?s past five games.

-- The ?under? is 18-7 overall for the Blue Raiders, 7-2 in its home games. However, the ?over? is on a 4-2 run in their past six contests.

-- The CBS Sports Network will have the broadcast at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

**************

-- Nevada?s Caleb Martin is nasty. Dude reminds me of Kenyon Martin with the ability to dribble and shoot deep 3?s.

-- Georgia?s Mark Fox left three timeouts in his pocket like a knucklehead in last night?s crushing 61-60 home loss to Texas A&M. Admon Gilder?s 3-pointer with 1:12 remaining sliced UGA?s lead to 60-59, and then the Bulldogs? true freshman point guard Teshaun Hightower turned the ball over. Eleven seconds later, A&M went back in front by one on T.J. Starks?s short jumper. With the Aggies heading to the free throw line for a front end with 12 ticks remaining, Fox could?ve called a timeout to ice the shooter and instruct his team on how to proceed in the event of a make or a miss (or both) and still had two timeouts left to burn. Whatever the case, you want to make a million-percent sure that star senior Yante Maten gets the ball on the final possession. Remember, Maten made a pair of deep 3?s in the final 16 seconds of regulation to force overtime in an improbable win at Florida on Valentine?s Day. When A&M missed, Maten rebounded and threw an outlet pass to Hightower, who rushed up the court and nearly lost the ball with eight seconds left. At this point as the possession was going nowhere, Fox could?ve instructed his players to call timeout. Then Hightower passed to Juwan Parker on the wing right in front of UGA?s bench. Parker was double-teamed and in panic mode. Maten was on the other side of the court at the 3-point line open. Parker hurriedly forced a wild shot that had no chance. A&M rebounded, the clock ran out and Fox was left to blame nobody but himself for a gut-wrenching defeat.

-- Florida head coach Mike White said earlier this week that John Egbunu, who tore his ACL on Valentine?s Day of 2017 and hasn?t been able to play yet this year, tried to practice late last week. However, his ?knee began swelling up immediately,? according to White. His return this year seems highly doubtful at this point. It?s unclear whether Egbunu will seek a waiver from the NCAA for a sixth season, though he?d probably have a decent chance at getting it. He sat out one season via transfer rules (from South Florida) and has obviously missed all of 2017-18 (so far).

-- George Mason?s Ian Boyd made his third-game winning bucket of the season last night when he tipped in a teammate?s miss to lift his team to an 81-80 win at VCU. The sophomore guard averages modest numbers (8.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG) but knows how to come through in the clutch.

-- As of Wednesday afternoon, Tulsa guard Sterling Taplin was ?questionable? for Thursday?s game against East Carolina due to an ankle injury. Taplin averages 12.0 points, 4.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

-- UTSA?s Jhivvan Jackson is ?out? for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Jackson was averaging 18.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game for the Roadrunners.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) De'Andre Hunter's 3-pointer as time expired gave No. 1 Virginia a 67-66 victory over Louisville on Thursday night in a wild finish that made the Cavaliers the first Atlantic Coast Conference team to go 9-0 on the road in league play.

The Cavaliers (27-2, 16-1) tied the game at 58 with 2 minutes left and overcame another five-point deficit in the final minute. Louisville led 66-64 and tried to inbounds with .9 seconds left, but Virginia got the ball after Deng Adel was called for traveling on the baseline.

After a timeout, Hunter got the ball and sank a long 3 that banked in at the horn.

Ty Jerome scored 21 points for Virginia.

Adel had 18 points for Louisville (19-11, 9-8).

---

No. 10 CINCINNATI 78, TULANE 49

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Kyle Washington had 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, and Cincinnati clinched a share of the American Athletic Conference title.

Cane Broome scored 13 for the Bearcats (26-4, 15-2), whose stifling defensive play helped them build leads as large as 19 in the first half and 33 in the second.

The Bearcats can clinch the title outright with a victory at No. 11 Wichita State on Sunday.

Melvin Frazier scored 13 points for Tulane (14-15, 5-12).

---

No. 11 WICHITA STATE 75, UCF 71, OT

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Shaquille Morris scored 19 points and Conner Frankamp added 16 for Wichita State.

Landry Shamet scored 14 points and had six assists for the Shockers (24-5, 14-3 American Athletic Conference), who have won seven straight.

A.J. Davis led UCF (17-12, 8-9) with 31 points, including a desperation 3-pointer with .7 seconds left in regulation that sent the game into overtime. B.J. Taylor scored 23 for the Knights, who lost their third straight.

---

No. 15 MICHIGAN 77, IOWA 71, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Duncan Robinson made Michigan's only field goal in overtime, a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:15 left, and the Wolverines advanced to the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Wolverines (25-7) face fourth-seeded Nebraska on Friday at Madison Square Garden.

Michigan was 3 for 19 from 3-point range and Robinson made all of them. His OT 3 put Michigan up 72-70, and the Wolverines made just enough free throws to hold off the Hawkeyes (14-19), who got a basket from Luka Garza on their first overtime possession and not another one.

Tyler Cook and Garza scored 13 points apiece for Iowa.

---

No. 19 ARIZONA 75, STANFORD 67

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - With coach Sean Miller back on the job and Allonzo Trier reinstated, Arizona clinched at least a share of the Pac-12 title.

Dusan Ristic scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half. Ristic, a senior, set a school record by participating in his 111th victory. Trier, reinstated by the NCAA after a two-game suspension, added 18 points for the Wildcats (23-7, 13-4 Pac-12) and Deandre Ayton, the freshman who leads the Pac-12 in scoring and rebounding, had 12 points and 10 boards.

Arizona has won or shared the conference regular season title five times since 2010-11 and beat Stanford for the 17th straight time. The Wildcats can clinch the title outright by beating California on Saturday night or if USC loses to UCLA.

Reid Travis scored 23 points for the Cardinal (16-14, 10-7).

---

No. 24 MIDDLE TENNESSEE 82, WESTERN KENTUCKY 64

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - Brandon Walters scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Middle Tennessee clinched its second straight Conference USA title.

Nick King scored 18 points and had nine rebounds for the Blue Raiders (24-5, 16-1), who cracked the national rankings for the first time in school history last week.

Middle Tennessee shot 55 percent from the field, extending its winning streak to 11.

Lamonte Bearden led the Hilltoppers (22-8, 14-3) with 24 points. The loss ended Western Kentucky's six-game winning streak.

Quote of the Day
?I think it would be in their best interests to know how our industry financially operates before they start working with legislators across the country on sports gaming bills. I?m not aware of any league inquiries at this time. I would like to see that change in the near future on both levels. I hope we can discuss and meet with the leagues and legislators who are considering or processing sports betting bills. I believe it would be a tremendous benefit for all of them to understand the sports gaming industry and how it operates.?
Jay Kornegay, VP of Westgate Race and Sports Book

********************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) We?ve entered the age of ?guilty until proven innocent.?

I?m talking now about Sean Miller and the situation at Arizona, where ESPN claimed that Miller was caught on an FBI wiretap talking about an illegal payoff for star player DeAndre Ayton.

Problem is, there is no recording of this conversation, no transcript of it, and there isn?t 100% agreement on when this conversation supposedly took place, or whether the player being talked about on the tape in question was even Ayton.

So Miller remains the coach at Arizona, but if he is indeed innocent, where does he go to get his reputation back, since there will always be people that believe he broke the rules?

12) Arizona xx, Stanford xx? Allonzo Trier was cleared to play by the NCAA, so all-around, it was a solid day to be a Wildcat in Tucson.

11) Bartolo Colon pitched for the Rangers Thursday; Luis Urias was the Padres? 2B in the same game. Colon made his major league debut April 3, 1997, two months before Urias was born.

10) Other than who the Rams take, the one thing I?ll be looking for when the NFL Draft rolls around is where Louisville QB Lamar Jackson winds up. My personal opinion is that there is a place for him in the NFL, but I?m just a guy typing on his laptop.

One NFL personnel guy has to risk his career on Jackson being an NFL QB.

9) When the Cleveland Browns interviewed Alabama RB Bo Scarbrough at the NFL Combine, one of the questions they asked him was if he thought God is an Auburn fan.

What does that have to do with anything?

8) Minnesota Vikings went 13-3 this past season, their best record in 19 years, but it is likely that none of their three QB?s from last year will be on their 2018 roster.

Case Keenum had a great season, but it looks like Minnesota will let him test the free agent market; Sam Bradford?s knee is so bad that they?d be stupid to sign him- Mike Zimmer called it ?degenerative?, and Teddy Bridgewater had a non-contact injury in 2016 that he still may not be fully recovered from. All three of those quarterbacks are free agents, and all three will likely be elsewhere in a few months.

7) Bruins led Pittsburgh after the first period Thursday night; it was most goals scored in first period of an NHL game since Arizona led Nashville 6-3 after first period on March 28, 2013.

6) RB?s Saquon Barkley, Nick Chubb did 29 bench press reps at the NFL Combine.

Barkley and Chubb had more reps than all but five of the 36 offensive linemen to bench press at the Combine this year.

5) No quarterback who played at USC has ever started a Super Bowl.

QB?s from Fresno State, Arizona, Morehead State, Northern Iowa, Navy, Southern Miss and Grambling have all won Super Bowls.

4) This from covers.com:
?Nevada has seen explosive popularity in sports betting over the past decade. The annual handle rose from $2.8 billion in 2010 to $4.9 billion in 2017???

3) If you care about such things, Lee Westwood has the most career earnings at The Masters without ever having won the tournament. Justin Rose is 2nd, Ernie Els is 3rd on that list.

2) University of Nevada has only seven healthy scholarship basketball players right now; they?ve added three walk-ons in the last month, including two WR?s from the football team. Adding the walk-ons allows them to practice 5-on-5 at least.

1? Our thoughts/prayers go out to Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly, who once again is battling cancer. He?s a tough guy; we wish him well in this latest battle.
