Maui Invitational Preview
November 17, 2017

The 2017 Maui Jim Maui Invitational only has one top 25 team amongst its eight combatants, but some highly-esteemed college basketball programs will still be looking to put on a show.

The event is a bracketed-format tournament that will see each team partake in live action each day win or lose. This year?s lineup includes Marquette, VCU, Wichita State, California, Notre Dame, Michigan, LSU, and of course, Chaminade.

A whopping 118 schools representing 26 conferences and 80 percent of the United States have at one point in time laced ?em up and competed in the Maui Invitational over the course of its 33-year history. Powerhouse teams from powerhouse conferences normally make the trip to the island, and that?s once again the case in 2017.

The last four teams to win it went on to participate in the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina used this tournament as a spring board towards winning the program its sixth national title a year ago. Kansas, Arizona and Syracuse cut the nets down the prior three seasons.

Player to Watch

Keyshawn Evans ? The Cal Golden Bears aren?t expected to do much of anything in Pac-12 play in Wyking Jones? first go of it as head coach in Berkley. In fact, many conference previews expect them to finish dead last or right ahead of Washington State. With so many players departed from last year?s 21-13 team, opportunities have opened for others to step in and make an impact.

That?s exactly what sophomore guard Don Coleman has done through the team?s first three games in averaging over 25 points per game. The youngster dropped 31 and 30 points on UC Riverside and Cal Poly Slo?s heads in the team?s first two games, and he?ll no doubt be looked upon to make some noise on the island.

Team to Watch

Wichita State Shockers ? If there were any sort of odds released to win this tournament, the Shockers would no doubt be the odds on favorites to do so. Gregg Marshall?s kids got out to a slow start at the beginning of last season, and because of it, got tabbed a No. 10 seed by the selection committee in last year?s NCAA Tournament even though they entered it having not lost a game since the middle of January.

You can bet your bottom dollar the Shockers hit the hardwood looking to accrue some style points over the next three days. The absence of Markis McDuffie will make it tougher to dominate the glass, but Shaquille Morris and Darral Willis Jr. should still be able to handle their business. Look for Landry Shamet to take a liking to the Lahaina Civic Center?s notorious soft rims.

Coach to Watch

Mike Brey ? The Fighting Irish have won a total of 50 games over the last two years, and it has everything to do with the job Brey does getting the best out of his players. Now in his 18th year at the helm of the program, he?s got a couple of PTP?ers in Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell that will no doubt have Notre Dame competing for league dominance as well as a trip back to the Big Dance for the eighth time in the last nine years.

No longer the underdog, the target is square on the Irish?s back after excelling for a number of years now. If there was any coach readily able to take on a challenge like that and live to tell about it, it would be Mike Brey who has routinely gotten more from unknown players in the past and turned them into collegiate studs.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) Some college basketball coaches choose to play easy nonconference games to build up their players' confidence, while others want their teams to be tested right away.

Count the teams in the Maui Invitational in the test-right-away category.

One of the nation's top holiday tournaments, the Maui Invitational is loaded again this season, with a pair of top-15 teams, three teams with recent Final Four appearances and an eight-team field that's made 42 postseason appearances over the past seven seasons. Teams in the Maui field have gone on to win the national championship seven times, including North Carolina last season.

''It's a big benchmark of where you are,'' Michigan coach John Beilein said at a news conference overlooking Kaanapali Beach on Sunday. ''It really is a chance for our kids, our coaches to say, `OK, I've got a lot of work to do' and get on with the season.''

The Maui Invitational, which begins Monday at the tiny Lahaina Civic Center, has two teams with Final Four aspirations: No. 6 Wichita State and No. 13 Notre Dame .

The Shockers have the type of roster that could get them back to the Final Four following their surprising run in 2013. Wichita State has all five starters back from a 31-win team, led by the duo of Landry Shamet and Markis McDuffie, though both started the season recovering from injuries.

Shamet has returned from offseason surgery for a stress fracture in his right foot, but McDuffie is out until next month because of a stress fracture in his left foot. The Shockers open against California in Maui.

Notre Dame has quickly established itself as one of the ACC's top teams since joining the conference in 2013, reaching the Elite Eight twice in the past three seasons. It has the type of team this year that could push for the program's first Final Four appearance.

Led by preseason All-American Bonzie Colson, the Fighting Irish opened the season with three decisive victories and will face scrappy host Chaminade in their Maui opener.

''I know what position he is,'' Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. ''He's 6-foot-5, the wingspan is 7-2, he doesn't have a neck, he doesn't have calves, he just gets it done. He's just a beautiful basketball player.''

The Maui Invitational opens with Marquette against Virginia Commonwealth and the first day closes with Michigan against LSU .

NEW COACHES: This year's Maui bracket will feature three coaches in their first seasons: Cal's Wyking Jones, LSU's Will Wade and VCU's Mike Rhoades. Jones was an assistant under Cuonzo Martin and was promoted when Martin left for Missouri. Wade left VCU to replace the fired Johnny Jones in Baton Rouge. Rhoades was an assistant to Shaka Smart on the 2011 Final Four team before spending the past three seasons as the head coach at Rice. Wade could have missed out on a trip to Maui by taking a new job, but the Tigers were headed to paradise, too. ''I was bound and determined to get here one way or another,'' Wade said. He would face his former team only in the championship game or in the loser's bracket.

WOJO RETURNS: Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski knows a little about winning the Maui Invitational. He was on the 1997 Duke team that took the Maui title and was the tournament MVP after shutting down top-ranked Arizona's Mike Bibby in the title game. ''It was a great memory; obviously it was first time being here,'' Wojciechowski said. ''Just like this year, it was a strong field and we were fortunate enough to beat defending national champions Arizona in the championship game.'' Wojciechowski also was an assistant to Mike Krzyzewski when the Blue Devils won Maui titles in 2001, 2007 and 2011.

FEAR THE SWORDS: Chaminade does not have the size or depth to match up with the big-program schools to come to Maui every year, but the Division II school from Oahu has a knack for pulling off upsets under the bright lights in Maui. The Silverswords are 7-87 all-time, but they're fast, shoot well and have taken down big programs like Texas, Oklahoma, Villanova and Stanford in the past. Beating Notre Dame in the opener might be a lot to ask, but watch out for those `swords.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Marvin Bagley III scored 24 points and No. 1 Duke beat Furman 92-63 on Monday night in the on-campus round of the PK80.

Trevon Duval had a season-best 18 points, Wendell Carter Jr. added 14 and a fourth freshman - Alex O'Connell - scored 10 for the Blue Devils (5-0).

They shot nearly 61 percent and outscored Furman 64-28 in the paint, and have won all four of their games at Cameron Indoor Stadium by at least 17 points.

Tougher tests await this team in the coming days in Portland, Oregon - possibly from No. 7 Florida or No. 17 Gonzaga in a later round of the event marking Nike founder Phil Knight's 80th birthday.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Shaquille Morris scored 25 points, Landry Shamet added 23 and Wichita State got the Maui Invitational off to a wild start by rallying from an 18-point deficit to beat California.

Cal (2-2) used its pressure to harass the Shockers into mistakes and missed shots, building the lead to nine by halftime and 18 within 4 + minutes of the second half.

The Shockers (3-0) turned the game around by turning on their own pressure cooker, revving up the crowd by speeding up the young Bears with their full-court press. Cal handled it poorly, leading to a string of turnovers transition baskets that allowed Wichita State to pull even with 5 minutes left.

Wichita State snatched the lead with a late 8-0 run, earning a spot in Tuesday's semifinals against Marquette.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kevin Knox scored 17 points and Kentucky built a big lead in the second half before having to withstand a late rally by Troy.

After having to rally in each of its previous games, the Wildcats (4-1) led throughout against the Trojans (2-3). They built a double-digit lead early and extended it to 21 twice in the second half, a needed cushion as Troy fought back to within eight on Wesley Person's three-point play with 1:08 remaining.

Knox came up with the last of Kentucky's season-high 53 rebounds that preserved its second victory in the Adolph Rupp Classic named for the legendary coach.

Person had 17 points for Troy.

GEORGETOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) - Gary Clark scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Cincinnati held off Buffalo to close the opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic.

Kyle Washington added 14 points and Jarron Cumberland 13 for the Bearcats (4-0), who had breezed in their previous games.

C.J. Massinburg scored 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls (2-1). Jeremy Harris added a career-high 17 and Nick Perkins 14 as Buffalo cut a 13-point halftime deficit to four with 24 seconds left.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Matt Farrell scored 27 points and Bonzie Colson added 23, helping Notre Dame open the Maui Invitational with a rout over Division II Chaminade.

Notre Dame (4-0) was sharp from the start at the offensive end, building a nine-point halftime lead and gradually extending it in the second half by making 14 of 26 shots.

The Irish shot 54 percent and made 9 of 20 from 3-point range to earn a spot in Tuesday's semifinals against the Michigan-LSU winner.

Chaminade (2-1) kept it close early with its perimeter shooting before wearing down against the bigger Irish.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Trevon Bluiett followed his fabulous game against Wisconsin with a 21-point performance on Monday night, and Xavier turned to its reserves while pulling away to a victory over Hampton.

The Musketeers (4-0) got ahead by 32 points and took advantage of the chance to get playing time for their newcomers. Freshman Naji Marshall had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Xavier was coming off an 80-70 win at Wisconsin on Thursday night, when Bluiett led the way by scoring 21 of his 25 points in the second half. Against Hampton, Bluiett played 27 minutes.

Jermaine Marrow led Hampton (1-4) with 20 points.

NEW YORK (AP) - Robert Williams 11 points, 11 rebounds and a handful of alley-oop dunks to help Texas A&M beat Oklahoma State in the first game of the 2017 Progressive Legends Classic.

Williams added three steals and two blocks for the Aggies (3-0). DJ Hogg led all scorers with 18 points. Tonny Trocha-Morelos finished with 12 points and Admon Gilder had 10.

The loss was the first of the season for Oklahoma State (3-1). Brandon Averette led the Cowboys with 10.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Manu Lecomte poured in 25 points and Baylor held on after blowing most of a 19-point lead to beat Wisconsin 70-65 in the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Classic.

The Bears (4-0) established a 38-26 lead by halftime and stretched it to 53-34 midway through the second half, only for the Badgers (2-2) to whittle it to 57-55 with 2:12 left in the game.

Lecomte answered with five consecutive free throws, though. After the Badgers' Aleem Ford curled in a 3-pointer, Nuni Omot added two foul shots and Lecomte made two more to put the game away, sending the Bears into a matchup with Creighton for the title Tuesday night.

Ethan Happ had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Badgers (2-2).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Marcus Foster scored 23 points, Mitch Ballock added 22 in front of his boyhood fans and Creighton beat UCLA in the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Classic.

Khyri Thomas added 16 points and Ty-Shon Alexander had 12 for the Bluejays (4-0), who have won 12 straight in-season tournament games after titles at the MGM Grand Main Event and the Paradise Jam.

Creighton raced to an early lead, weathered the Bruins' best effort midway through the second half, and then proved it could put things away with poise and precision down the stretch.

Aaron Holiday had 25 points to lead the Bruins (3-1), who dealt with foul trouble much of the night.

No. 23 WEST VIRGINIA 91, LONG BEACH STATE 62

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Lamont West was a point shy of a career high with 22 and West Virginia overcame a slow start to beat Long Beach State.

For the second time in a week, the Mountaineers (3-1) started out sluggish, trailing LBSU 9-6 at the first media timeout.

WVU responded with an 18-5 run over the next 6:32 to regain the lead and create some cushion.

The 49ers (2-2) took advantage of a Mountaineer scoring drought in the second half but couldn't come within 15 points of the lead.

Sagaba Konate had a career-high 20 points and Chase Harler added 14 points, also a career high. Wesley Harris led the Mountaineers with nine rebounds.

LaVar Ball questions Trump's role in son's release
November 20, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) Outspoken basketball dad LaVar Ball questioned the extent of President Donald Trump's involvement in securing his son's release from the custody of Chinese authorities during a combative 20-minute CNN interview on Monday night.

The president, in tweets Sunday, said he should have left LiAngelo Ball and two other UCLA basketball players accused of shoplifting in jail because LaVar Ball ''is unaccepting of what I did for his son'' and ''very ungrateful!'' LaVar Ball has refused to thank Trump.

LaVar Ball didn't back down during the CNN interview, telling host Chris Cuomo that Trump has more important things to do than ask for his gratitude.

''That's on your mind, that a father didn't say `Thank you'? And you're the head of the U.S.? Come on,'' Ball said. ''There's a lot of other things that's going on. Let him do his political affairs and let me handle my son, and let's just stay in our lane.''

Ball suggested that he and Chinese president Xi Jinping had more to do with securing his son's release than the president.

''Did (Trump) help the boys get out? I don't know. If I was going to thank somebody, I probably would thank President Xi. He's in China. He's the president of China,'' Ball said, later adding: ''I helped my son get out of China. I had some people that had boots on the ground that knew the situation.''

Ball also pushed back against Trump's suggestion that shoplifting ''is a very big deal in China.''

''It wasn't a big deal because being raised in South Central LA, I've seen harsher things. I've seen 16, 17-year-old kids that have had to go to jail for life, that were my friends,'' Ball said. ''He wasn't physical. He returned it. He fessed up to it.''

LiAngelo and fellow UCLA freshmen Jalen Hill and Cody Riley have been suspended indefinitely. They were arrested and questioned about stealing from high-end stores next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins stayed before leaving for Shanghai to play Georgia Tech. All three apologized for their actions and thanked Trump for his role in securing their release, which occurred while the president was traveling in Asia.

The trio isn't allowed to suit up, be on the bench for home games or travel with the team. Without them, No. 23 UCLA lost to Creighton on Monday night in the Hall of Fame Classic.

LaVar Ball is attempting to build an empire around the basketball skills of his three sons - Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo, LiAngelo and prep prospect LaMelo - and his own bombastic personality. He started an apparel company, Big Baller Brand, with shoes that retail for $500 or more, and he got in several plugs for his products during the CNN interview.
