NEW ORLEANS (AP) Joel Berry II and Theo Pinson each scored 19 points, and No. 5 North Carolina bounced back from a loss to Wofford with a convincing 86-72 victory over Ohio State on Saturday.

Pinson scored six points on flawless free throw shooting inside the final 1:06 of the game as the Tar Heels (11-2) kept the Buckeyes (10-4) at bay in the CBS Sports Classic.

Cameron Johnson scored 13 points in just his second game for North Carolina, which had 13 3-pointers.

Keita Bates-Diop had 26 points - one point shy of his career high - for Ohio State. He shot 10 of 17 for the game and scored 19 points in the second half, including eight straight for Ohio State during a late 13-4 run that briefly pulled the Buckeyes within 78-69 with 1:10 to play.

UCLA 83, No. 7 KENTUCKY 75

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Aaron Holiday capped a 20-point performance with a pivotal driving scoop and two free throws in the final 33 seconds for UCLA.

Kris Wilkes also scored 20 points, and Thomas Welsh added 13 points and 11 rebounds for UCLA (9-3), which won for the seventh time in 15 meetings between these historical college basketball powerhouses.

Hamidou Diallo scored 18 points and Wenyen Gabriel added a season-high 16 points for Kentucky (9-2), which lost for the first time in eight games.

NEW MEXICO STATE 63, No. 6 MIAMI 54

HONOLULU (AP) - Zach Lofton scored nine of his 15 points in the second half and New Mexico State knocked off Miami in the Diamond Head Classic semifinals.

The Aggies (11-2) beat a ranked team for the first time in 10 seasons and handed the Hurricanes (10-1) their first loss, leaving Villanova, Arizona State and TCU the lone undefeated Division I teams.

Lofton, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, added nine rebounds and three assists, and AJ Harris and Sidy N'Dir had 10 points apiece for the Aggies. DJ Vasiljevic led Miami with 15 points.

No. 10 WEST VIRGINIA 86, FORDHAM 69

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Jevon Carter and Sagaba Konate had double-doubles to lead West Virginia.

The Mountaineers (11-1) started out a little sluggish in the first half, unable to prevent Fordham runs over the first 7 minutes of the game but they were able to lead by 16 with 4 minutes left in the half.

Carter had 10 points and a career-high 12 assists while Konate had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Mountaineers won their 11th straight.

Daxter Miles Jr. led the Mountaineers with 21 pointsa and Lamont West added 15.

Will Tavares led Fordham (5-7) with 18 points and seven rebounds.

No. 21 TENNESSEE 79, WAKE FOREST 60

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Jordan Bowden scored 17 points and Tennessee shot 59 percent after halftime.

The Volunteers (9-2) led by one at the half but took control by scoring on seven of 10 possessions coming out of the break. That pushed Tennessee to a 52-43 lead, a margin that never slipped to fewer than five as the Demon Deacons struggled for a sustained push.

Keyshawn Woods scored 18 points for the Demon Deacons (7-5), who had won six straight.

No. 23 SETON HALL 74, MANHATTAN 62

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Angel Delgado scored 15 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, Khadeen Carrington scored 15 and Desi Rodriguez added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Seton Hall.

The victory was the seventh in eight games for the Pirates (11-2).

Myles Powell had 13 points for Seton Hall before he was ejected in an altercation right before halftime. Michael Nzei had 10 points to give the Pirates five players in double figures.

The Jaspers (5-7) were led by Zane Waterman who had 18 points.

Miami rebounds, tops Middle Tennessee
December 25, 2017

HONOLULU (AP) A little rest went a long way for No. 15 Miami.

Dewan Huell scored 21 points, Bruce Brown Jr. had a season-high 20 and the Hurricanes beat Middle Tennessee 84-81 in the Diamond Head Classic on Monday night.

DJ Vasiljevic added 13 points, helping Miami rebound from its first loss of the season to New Mexico State in Saturday's semifinals. It finished third in the eight-team tournament.

The 6-foot-11 Huell was 7 for 8 from the field and 7 for 8 at the line in Miami's third game in four days. The sophomore forward was named to the all-tournament team.

Miami shot 60 percent (30 of 50) from the field after shooting a season-worst 34 percent in the loss to the Aggies.

''It wasn't so much preparation for Middle Tennessee, as it was rest,'' Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga said.

''We didn't do our practice. I think the mistake that I made playing (twice) in 24 hours, I didn't rest the guys. We actually went and practiced because we knew New Mexico State did a lot of things that we needed to prepare for and that was bad preparation, (but) we should have just let our guys execute the fundamentals the way we play and that was my mistake. I didn't want to make that same mistake again.''

Nick King led Middle Tennessee (8-4) with 28 points. Antwain Johnson and Brandon Walters had 12 points apiece.

''I thought we played really well offensively, but the way the game is being called you have to have rim protectors and we don't have that, especially after Brandon Walters fouled out. That made it really tough against a big team like Miami,'' Middle Tennessee coach Kermit Davis said.

The Blue Raiders led by as many as 13 in the first half, but the Hurricanes went ahead to stay on a straightaway 3-pointer by Anthony Lawrence II with 3:19 left in the game.

Brown scored 14 points in the second half. He was 8 for 16 from the field on the night and also had six rebounds and three assists.

Huell reflected back to last season for some extra motivation.

''Last year, at around this same time, we lost two games back to back in a tournament and we knew how that felt and we did not want the same results here going into ACC play,'' Huell said.

There were eight ties and nine lead changes in the first meeting between the teams.

BIG PICTURE

Middle Tennessee: It was the sixth time this season that the Blue Raiders faced an opponent that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season. It posted wins over Florida Gulf Coast (twice), Vanderbilt and Princeton, but lost to Southern California.

Miami: The Hurricanes entered with the second-best mark nationally in both scoring defense (57 points per game) and opponent field-goal percentage (35.3 percent), as well as the third-best mark in opponent 3-point shooting (26.6 percent). The Blue Raiders shot 51.9 percent from the field and 46.7 from 3-point range.

INJURY SCARE

Miami freshman Lonnie Walker IV went down late in the first half with an apparent left knee injury. Walker was tended to by an athletic trainer on the court and walked off under his own power. The guard remained in uniform on the bench in the second half, but did not return to the court.

TOP 25 THIS WEEK: Oklahoma-TCU headlines big week in Big 12

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The Big 12 is poised for a big week as conferences dive deep into league play.

It has a national-best six teams in this week's AP Top 25 along with two games featuring a pair of ranked teams, including No. 12 Oklahoma's visit to 10th-ranked surprise TCU as the top game on the schedule in the week ahead.

''I think it's two teams playing with a lot of confidence, and we've got to go in there and do what we do every day in practice,'' Sooners coach Lon Kruger said after Friday's win against Northwestern . ''A lot of good teams in the Big 12 and we know how tough every night is going to be.''

No. 18 Baylor (10-2) visits No. 22 Texas Tech (11-1) on Friday to start the Big 12 doubleheader, then freshman star Trae Young leads Oklahoma (10-1) into Fort Worth to face TCU (12-0) - which owns the nation's longest winning streak at 17 games dating to last year's run to the NIT title.

The Horned Frogs have their highest ranking in program history under second-year coach Jamie Dixon. They had never been higher than 13th (February 1998) before climbing five slots in Monday's new poll.

''It's what it is - I don't spend a lot of time on it,'' Dixon said after Friday's win against William & Mary . ''I think we're good. I know we can be better. ... But I think certainly we'll have a big-time atmosphere and a big-time game come December 30th. That's what we came here to do. So it's upon us.''

SUN DEVILS' TEST

Third-ranked Arizona State (12-0) has spent the past month reaching milestones for matching the highest ranking in program history (last time in 1980-81) and posting the best start in program history.

Now comes a new test: a Saturday trip to face a regrouped Arizona squad.

The 17th-ranked Wildcats (10-3) went from No. 2 nationally to unranked in a week after an 0-3 showing at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas, but have since won seven straight games .

MORE RANKED MATCHUPS

There are two other matchups between ranked teams. No. 23 Seton Hall hosts No. 25 Creighton in the Big East on Thursday, while No. 4 Duke hosts No. 24 Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday.

VILLANOVA STAYS ON TOP

The top four teams stayed unchanged in Monday's poll , with Villanova checking in at No. 1 for the third straight week after receiving 43 of 65 first-place votes.

The Wildcats (12-0) open Big East play with two road games, first Wednesday at DePaul and then Saturday at Butler.

CHICAGO (AP) Mikal Bridges scored 20 points, Phil Booth added 17 points and six assists and No. 1 Villanova beat DePaul 103-85 on Wednesday night in the Big East opener for both teams.

The Wildcats (13-0, 1-0 Big East) closed in on last year's program-record 14-0 start and gave coach Jay Wright his 399th victory in 17 seasons at Villanova.

Bridges and Booth each made four 3-pointers, and the Wildcats nailed 15 of 31 from long range.

Jalen Brunson had 16 points and five assists. Eric Paschall scored 16, and Villanova hit the 100-point mark for the third time this season.

Max Strus had 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists for DePaul (7-6, 0-1), which dropped its 13th straight against ranked opponents. They fell to 3-21 against No. 1 teams.

Andrew Rowsey led the Golden Eagles (9-4, 0-1) with 31 points but missed a 3 while open from a couple feet from behind the arc with 1:16 left with his team trailing 85-82.

The Big East leader in free throw shooting (79.8 percent), Xavier sealed the road victory by going 6 of 6 from the line over the final 28 seconds.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) OK, so it is really cold in beautiful upstate New York this week, where I live. I?m in the grocery store Wednesday, buying some non-nutritional food items, and I see this guy walk in the store wearing a jacket and shorts. It is 15 freakin? degrees out. This genius has shorts on.

Guy looked like he was in his mid-late 40?s. I had a parka on over a sweatshirt and I was still freezing. This guy had shorts on, not even gym shorts, the kind you wear in summer. Oy.

12) Duke 36, Northern Illinois 14? NIU tried the worst fake punt I?ve even seen- seriously.

4:32 left in first quarter, Duke leading 7-0. Northern Illinois has 4th-and-18 at their own 11? their punter catches the snap and throws a long pass to the gunner going down the sideline on the right? the pass bounces couple yards short of the receiver, who was 3-4 yards short of the line to gain anyway, and he was covered, to boot. Simply awful.

The TV announcers were stunned, tried to be kind, but it was coaching malpractice. Duke scored a TD three plays later, led 14-0 on their way to an easy 36-14 win.

11) UCLA kicker JJ Molson is an 8th generation member of the Molson family, who own part of the largest brewery in Canada. His dad?s cousin owns the Montreal Canadiens; the kid?s mother is an optometrist- their family?s net worth is estimated a $1.6B, thats billion, with a B.

JJ Molson turned down a scholarship offer from Alabama to kick at UCLA. Before this season, he had never kicked before a crowd larger than 1,000 people.

10) Utah 30, West Virginia 14? Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is the King of Bowls; he is 11-1 in bowls as a head coach. Utes weren?t even that good this year (7-6) but they won this game easily.

9) Weird scene after the Seattle-Dallas game Sunday, with Seahawks? DB Earl Thomas running up to Cowboys coach Jason Garrett in the tunnel after the game and apparently asking Garrett to recruit him in free agency this winter. You don?t see that every day.

8) 91-year old Mel Brooks has been an actor, writer, producer, director, comedian, composer. He is a comic genius- his resume goes from Get Smart to Blazing Saddles to The Producers. Brooks was married to the great actress Anne Bancroft for 41 years before she passed away in 2005.

During World War II, Brooks was a corporal in the 78th Infantry Division, defusing landmines. What a life he?s had, but it was amazing to me that the guy who created such great comedy spent part of his life under the greatest pressure imaginable, defusing landmines in a war. Wow.

7) Phoenix Suns beat Memphis 99-97 Tuesday night on a great side out-of-bounds play with 0:00.6 left; the inbounder basically tried to put his pass in the basket, then Tyson Chandler simply tipped it home at the buzzer- there cannot be offensive goaltending on a shot that wouldn?t be a legal basket, such as an in-bounds pass. Clever strategy by Suns? coach Jay Triano.

6) All the NFL games with playoff implications are being played at 4:25 Sunday, to increase the drama as far as who makes/misses the playoffs.

Ravens? coach John Harbaugh was whining Tuesday that the late start might hurt the crowd in Baltimore, saying, ?I don?t think the NFL did us any favors by moving it back, but they don?t care about us. So, we just have to care about ourselves. We have to take care of our own business. That goes for our team, for our fans and for our city. Let?s go win the football game.?

Playing the ?us against the world? card. Jeez, all they have to do is beat the Bengals.

5) Jacksonville Jaguars have had 13 players who started every game this season; Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had one. Part of winning is the good fortune of staying healthy.

4) Saw a scary story on the Interweb this week about how Houston Astros? coach Rich Dauer almost died at the Astros? World Series parade/celebration just after the World Series.

Turns out Dauer had fallen and banged his head the day before, and he had bleeding on the brain the next day. Doctors performed an aamergency operations and he came thru it well, in a situation where one doctor had given him a 3% chance of having a complete recovery.

3) Rams are sitting out lot of starters this week, notably Todd Gurley/Jared Goff, which means QB Sean Mannion will make his first NFL start???.likewise for the Chiefs, with Alex Smith taking a seat in Denver this week? rookie Patrick Mahomes gets his first NFL start.

2) Chicago Bulls are 3-20 with Nikola Mirotic out of the lineup this season; they?re 9-2 since he got back in the lineup. Mirotic was out of the lineup because he got punched out by teammate Bobby Portis in a practice before the season started and his cheekbones got broken. Not good.

1) Disappointing news from the Arena Football front, where apparently the Tampa Bay Storm have closed up shop, meaning the AFL is down to four teams this season, which obviously isn?t a good situation. Arenaball is a great, affordable night out; hopefully more cities will be interested in having a team and the league can become popular again, like it was in the 90?s.
