Monday's WCC Tip Sheet
March 4, 2018

The top two seeds in the West Coast Conference successfully navigated their way through the quarterfinal round of their annual tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. This sets up a pair of semifinal matchups this Monday night starting at 9:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN.

San Francisco at No. 7 Gonzaga (ESPN, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Gonzaga -13, Total 140 ?

Betting Matchup

San Francisco opened tournament play with a tight 71-70 overtime victory against Pacific as a three-point favorite. The total went OVER 136 points in that game after it had stayed UNDER in six of its previous eight games.

The Dons came in as the fourth seed with a straight-up 9-9 record in conference play. They only covered in eight of those 18 games, but they were a perfect 2-0 against the spread in two previous losses to Gonzaga closing as double-digit underdogs both at home and on the road.

Guards? Jordan Ratinho (20 points) and Frankie Ferrari (17 points) led the way on Saturday with junior forward Matt McCarthy adding 14 points in the winning cause. San Francisco shot 46.7 percent from the field and it was 10-for-26 from three-point range.

On the year, the Dons have four players averaging at least 10 points per game as part of a team scoring average of 68.9. They have exceeded this average in five of their last six games. Defensively, they are allowing 67.8 PPG.

The Bulldogs have now won their last 12 games SU with Saturday?s 83-69 victory against Loyola Marymount. They failed to cover as 19-point favorites and the total went OVER the closing 149 ?-point line.

Gonzaga (28-4) has failed to cover in 11 of its last 14 games as part of a 12-18-1 record ATS overall. It is 2-3 ATS this season at a neutral site and 11-16-1 when closing as a favorite. The Bulldogs beat San Francisco by 10 points on the road in mid-January before posting a nine-point victory at home on Jan. 27.

Gonzaga took a one-point lead into halftime of Saturday?s game before pulling away down the stretch. The trio of Killian Tillie, Johnathan Williams and Zach Norvell Jr. combined to score 61 of the Bulldogs? 83 points while adding 22 rebounds and five assists.

Williams has been the team?s leading scorer this season with 13.8 PPG and he is also pulling down a team-high 8.1 rebounds a game. Gonzaga is ranked ninth in the nation in scoring with an average of 84.7 PPG.

Betting Trends

--The Dons have failed to cover in four of their last five neutral-site games and the total has stayed UNDER in 20 of their last 28 games following a SU win.

--The Bulldogs are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games coming off a SU win and the total has gone OVER in their last four games played at a neutral site.

--Head-to-head, San Francisco has a 5-3 edge ATS in the last eight meetings and the total has gone OVER in seven of the last nine matchups.

BYU at No. 22 Saint Mary?s, CA (ESPN2, 11:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Saint Mary's -5 ?, Total 136

Betting Matchup

The Cougars went 11-7 both SU and ATS in WCC play to earn the third seed in this tournament. They got past San Diego on Saturday 85-79 as 4 ?-point favorites to get a third shot this season at taking down the Gaels.

They lost the first meeting to Saint Mary?s at home by 10 points as two-point underdogs before getting beat by 13 points on the road as 8 ?-point underdogs. BYU has gone 2-4 ATS in its last six games and the total has gone OVER in eight of its last 10 contests.

For the third time to be the charm, the Cougars are going to need another huge effort from junior guard Elijah Bryant and sophomore forward Yoeli Childs after they combined to score 49 points in Saturday?s win.

These two have been the big guns all season with each player averaging 18 PPG. Childs leads the team in rebounds with 8.7 while connecting on 54.4 percent of his shots from the floor. Bryant is shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three-point range. Overall, the Cougars have averaged 74.3 PPG.

Saint Mary?s was just one game back of Gonzaga in the final WCC standings at 16-2 SU with the road team winning each meeting SU and ATS. It failed to cover as a heavy 15 ?-point favorite in Saturday?s 69-66 squeaker against Pepperdine in its first tournament game. The Gaels are a costly 2-6 ATS in their last eight contests with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in their last 13 games. They have now failed to cover in three of four neutral-site games this season.

The Gaels trailed by five points at the half against Pepperdine and at one point that deficit was 15 points against a team that had won just two conference games all season long. Saint Mary?s ended the game with four of five starters in double figures led by sophomore guard Jordan Ford?s game-high 19 points.

Senior center Jock Landale added 17 points and 19 rebounds in the winning cause. The Gaels were able to connect of 50 percent of its 22 shots from three-point range to help pullout the win.

Betting Trends

--The Cougars have failed to cover in eight of their last 11 Monday games and the total has gone OVER in their last five games following a SU win.

--The Gaels are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games played on Monday and the total has stayed UNDER in their last four games against a team with a SU winning record.

--The favorite in this WCC clash has covered the spread in 10 of the last 11 meetings and the total stayed UNDER in the last four matchups.

Championship Week - not the NCAA tournament - is the real March Madness
************

The NCAA tournament is for tourists.

You want the real March Madness? Try cramming every major-conference program as well as a truck full of mid-major teams into a week of basketball, with most of that condensed in a Thursday-to-Sunday window.

Then, try setting odds for every single one of those games, with a wave of new matchups the second those contests are through. And if that?s not enough, sick the sharpest sports bettors in the world on those odds and try to keep the book balanced.

?It?s like a duck on a pond,? Jay Rood, vice president of race and sports for MGM in Las Vegas, tells us. ?On top everything is peaceful and serene. But underneath, the duck is pedaling like crazy.?

Conference championship week doesn?t carry the pageantry of the NCAA tournament, but for those in the industry there is no busier time. It also doesn?t draw the massive crowds of public bettors, but caters more to the hardcore college hoops fans and professional handicappers.

?The handle for the NCAA tournament is probably a pretty close 50/50 split between sharp and public action. Conference tournament week,? says Rood, ?is closer to a 60/40 or 70/30 split in favor of action from the wiseguys.?

Oddsmakers admit that setting odds for the first two big days of the NCAA tournament ? Thursday and Friday ? is much easier than trying to keep pace with the conference tournaments. And throughout the tournament, books have at least a full day between each teams? next game.

Championship week not only challenges the oddsmakers to come up with lines for the next day on short notice but doesn?t allow them to come up for air until the whole thing is done Sunday evening ? just before the Selection Committee picks its field of 68 and they have to handicap the opening matchups for the national tournament.

?We?re talking about five straight days of non-stop basketball,? Peter Childs, supervisor of risk management for Sportsbook.ag, tells us. ?It?s exhausting but it?s also super exciting, with wall-to-wall games going. Personally, other than college bowl week from Christmas to January 1, this is my favorite week of the year.?

Despite the fatigue and short turnaround, books can?t afford to make any mistakes during championship week. Unlike the NCAA tournament, which is huge with the casual basketball bettors, the conference tournaments are shark infested waters with wiseguys just waiting for the books to slip and dunk their toe in.

?Our lines will be geared more towards what we think the sharps will do as opposed to what the public will do this week,? says Childs. ?Next week (during the NCAA tournament), it?s the complete opposite.?

What is it about the conference tournaments ? more than the national tournament - that draws the wiseguys? The overall consensus among sharps is the sheer abundance of games available. The more games, the more opportunities bettors have to find the matchup they want and cash in. It?s also a game of cat and mouse when the odds are released, chasing the added line value before books adjust their numbers.

Another reason championship week is more popular with sharps than the NCAA tournament is the familiarity between the programs. This not only works for situational bettors, looking to cash in on sweeps and revenge spots, but also when crunching the numbers for those conference tournaments.

?Using conference-only stats gives a great read on the teams as they all play common opponents within the same conference,? says Steve Merril. ?In the NCAA tournament, you normally have teams that played zero common opponents and completely different schedule strengths, so it?s harder to set an accurate power rating.?

Mid-major conference tournaments have been rolling since last week but March Madness ? the real March Madness ? kicks into high gear Tuesday and Wednesday when the big boys get underway. ACC tournament opens Tuesday, with the Big East, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12 starting Wednesday. The AAC tournament tips off Thursday.

Cash in on college basketball conference tournaments with these betting tips
************

If you want March Madness ? like the real Madness ? conference tournament time is it. Unlike the NCAA, conference tournaments throw constant competition at teams, with the winners often having to win three or for four games in three or four days.

The quick turnaround is not only a challenge for basketball programs but also for bookmakers, and that levels the playing field a bit with so many games happening in such a short span. So sports bettors will want to strike when books are at their weakest, and here are some helpful tips and tactics to follow to help you cash in on conference tournaments.

Mind the moves

As we mentioned, teams that win move on to the next day, which means oddsmakers are frantically making lines as matchups are set. With so many new games on the board, conference tournament spreads and totals can be some of weaker opening lines you?ll see all year.

Bettors will want to keep a close eye on those openers and shouldn?t be afraid to tail the early movement, with those adjustments based on instant action from wiseguys. Totals will see the biggest movement, as these Over/Unders are admittedly the oddsmakers? greatest weakness.

Don?t doubt depth

Due to that crazy pace during conference tournaments, the depth of a roster is put to the true test. Basketball bettors will want to analyze just how deep a team dives into its bench and how reliable those reserves are.

Some programs regularly only go six or seven players deep, while others are comfortable swapping out five at a time without seeing much of a downgrade. As games stack up and fatigue becomes a factor ? especially after close and intense games ? depth can be the difference when it comes to covering the spread.

And don?t get too caught up on experience, favoring upperclassmen over freshmen. At this point in the season, those first-year players are freshmen in name only.

Past meetings

Another big difference between capping conference tournaments compared to the Big Dance is familiarity. In the NCAA, opponents are often foreign and from different leagues. But in conference tourneys, you could have teams playing for a third time on the season.

Bettors should always go back and look at those recent meetings between foes, but also be mindful that a game played in late December or early January doesn?t hold as much weight as a game played toward the end of the regular season. Teams can change drastically in that time, with coaching adjustments, injuries and lineup moves, and player development.

Also don?t forget to take things like home-court advantage out of the mix, with most conference tournaments played at a neutral site. Know which teams can compete away from home and also which schools have a fan base that will travel and give them an edge in the postseason.

Motivation

Conference tournaments can produce surprise results, with top-seed schools bowing out early on. There are a number of power program coaches ? already pegged with a respectable seed in the NCAA - who have admitted that they don?t care about the conference title and would rather have their guys fresh for the national tournament.

On the flip side of this, you?ll have a number of bubble teams that need to either have a strong showing or win the conference tournament outright for a chance to hear their name called on Selection Sunday ? giving bettors a little extra incentive to back them against the spread. And, as always, you?ll have some losing programs that just want to get a terrible season over with. Buyer beware when it comes to those teams looking ahead to life without losing hoops.

West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals betting preview and odds

WCC Player of the Year Jock Landale had 31 points and 13 rebounds in the St. Mary's Gaels' overtime win in Provo, Utah back on December 25th.

The semifinals of the West Coast Conference Tournament are set and will tip off Monday evening at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas as the upstart San Francisco Dons take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the BYU Cougars will face off against the St. Mary's Gaels.

Tournament to be played at Orleans Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada.

San Francisco Dons vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs (-13, 140.5)

Seventh-ranked Gonzaga struggled to put away eighth-seeded Loyola Marymount in Saturday's quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference tournament, trailing 40-39 early in the second half and leading by just five with seven minutes to go before recording a 83-69 victory. But coach Mark Few wasn't surprised and expects another tough battle in Monday's semifinals in Las Vegas when the Bulldogs face fourth-seeded San Francisco, which edged Pacific 71-70 in overtime in the quarterfinals.

Gonzaga faces a San Francisco squad that lost by just nine points (82-73) in Spokane in the last meeting - trailing by three points with three minutes to go. The Zags bounced back from a sluggish first half that saw them score just 29 points to shoot 79.4 percent (19-of-24) from the floor after intermission and 61.2 percent for the game against Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals. Killian Tillie led the way with 24 points and was 5-of-5 from 3-point range while senior forward Johnathan Williams, who leads the team in both scoring (13.8) and rebounding (8.1), finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Dons rode the backcourt of Jordan Ratinho and Frankie Ferrari into the semifinals as the duo combined for 37 points and made 8-of-16 from 3-point range. Ferrari, who leads the team in scoring (11.4), finished with 17 points and eight assists and hit a key 3-pointer near the end of regulation to get the Dons into overtime while Ratinho, who is third in scoring (10.8), finished with a game-high 20 points and sank a 3-pointer to start OT - a lead USF never relinquished. Freshman guard Souley Boum (11.2), who had 22 points in a 75-65 home loss to the Zags on Jan. 13, and senior forward Chase Foster (10.2) also average in double figures for the Dons.

Brigham Young Cougars vs. St. Mary's Gaels (-5, 136.5)

No. 20 Saint Mary's nearly saw it's NCAA Tournament bubble burst in Saturday's West Coast Conference tournament quarterfinals in Las Vegas, needing to rally from a 15-point first half deficit to edge No. 10 seed Pepperdine 69-66. The second-seeded Gaels now move on to a semifinal matchup Monday with third-seed BYU, an 85-79 winner over San Diego, with seventh-ranked Gonzaga likely looming in Tuesday night's championship final.

BYU will be trying to snap a five-game losing streak to the Gaels, including a 74-64 overtime loss at home on Dec. 30. The Cougars will also be trying to avenge a 81-50 loss to Saint Mary's in last year's WCC Tourney semifinals. The one-two punch of junior guard Elijah Bryant (17.9 points, 6.4 rebounds) and sophomore forward Yoeli Childs (17.5, 8.7), who combined for 49 points in the quarterfinal win over San Diego, lead the Cougars with sophomore guard TJ Haws (12.0) also averaging in double figures.

Pepperdine, which finished its injury-plagued season with a measly 6-26 record, sent jaws dropping by jumping out to a 19-4 lead on the Gaels and led 62-57 with 4:17 to go. But forward Calvin Hermanson came to the rescue, sinking three consecutive 3-pointers over a two-minute span. WCC Player of the Year Jock Landale, a 6-11 senior center who is averaging a league-leading 21.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, presents a big problem for a lot of teams but has been especially troublesome for BYU. Landale had 31 points and 13 rebounds in the overtime win in Provo and finished with 32 points and 14 boards in a 75-62 victory over the Cougars on Jan. 25 at home.

BETTING STATS:

Top 25 Betting Recap
March 5, 2018

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Before we get started, a big thank you for reading all season! Hopefully you have been cashing some winners along the way, and this column has played at least a small part.

Ohio State (24-8 SU, 15-15 ATS) is a difficult team to figure. They have been nearly unstoppable at home, they won many key conference games on the road and they were sailing along as the No. 2 seed entering play in the Big Ten Tournament. However, they met their kryptonite, Penn State (21-13 SU, 17-12-1 ATS) in their opening game of the conference tourney. It turned out to be the only game for the Buckeyes, as they lost 69-68 to the Nittany Lions, falling to 0-3 SU/ATS this season against the boys from Happy Valley. They were 24-5 SU/15-12 ATS against everyone else. It's a good thing these teams won't likely meet again this season barring a Final Four matchup, at least it's good for Ohio State.

Like the Buckeyes, Michigan State (29-4 SU, 15-16-2 ATS) did not come away with the Big Ten title. Sparty was shown the door by rival and eventual champ Michigan (28-7 SU, 22-11-1 ATS), who helped their resume the most in the first Big Ten tournament to be played in New York City. The Wolverines entered last week looking like at a seed anywhere from No. 5 to maybe No. 7 in the NCAA Tournament. Now, they might have risen up as high as the two line, or perhaps they're now sitting as a solid three. Coach Beilein's group toppled Purdue (28-6 SU, 15-17-1 ATS) in the title game for the third consecutive cover, and eighth in the past nine outings. The Wolverines have certainly been a friend at the bettor's window lately.

The Big Ten was the only major conference to have its conference tournament this past weekend, and that's because of a scheduling conflict at Madison Square Garden with the Big East Conference.

Duke (25-6 SU, 19-10 ATS) and North Carolina (22-9 SU, 16-13-1 ATS) were still hashing things out in the ACC regular season, with the Blue Devils locking up the No. 2 seed in the conference tourney behind No. 1 seed Virginia (28-2 SU, 18-8-1 ATS). The Blue Devils won the second installment of the Battle of the Blues, 74-64, and that set off the annual celebration in the quad with a bonfire in Durham. Don't look now, but Coach K's group has suddenly covered six of their past seven, while also going 6-1 SU during the span. On the flip side, Coach Roy's club is on an extended ugly streak, losing two in a row, while failing to cover three straight, and they're a very ordinary 6-5 SU/5-6 ATS over the past 11, and 10-7 SU/8-8-1 ATS across the past 17.

Rhode Island (23-6 SU, 15-11-1 ATS) picked a poor time for their worst stretch of play this season. The Rams have dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season, and they're just 1-4 ATS across the past five outings. In fact, the offense is averaging a dismal 59.5 PPG in the two-game losing streak, a far cry from their 76.4 PPG average, which ranks 99th in the nation. URI likely has sunk as low as the five- or six-line with their results lately, but they could climb a bit higher if they are able to secure the A-10 Championship. A poor showing in the conference tourney could have them slipping even further.

Middle Tennessee (24-6 SU, 16-11 ATS) fell out of The Associated Press Top 25 after a loss to Marshall (21-10 SU, 17-11 ATS), a team they certainly do not want to see in the Conference USA Tournament. The Thundering Herd are 2-0 SU/ATS against the Blue Raiders this season. MTSU is looking for a conference three-peat, and they will kick off their tournament Thursday against the winner of the eight-nine matchup between Florida International (14-17 SU, 15-9-1 ATS) and Southern Mississippi (14-17 SU, 13-13 ATS). The Blue Raiders were 1-0 SU/0-1 ATS vs. FIU, a road overtime win Jan. 4, and 2-0 SU/ATS vs. USM during the regular season.

Cincinnati (27-4 SU, 16-11-1 ATS) is playing like a two-seed, and they stuck another feather in their cap with a regular-season finale victory against Wichita State (25-6 SU, 19-10 ATS) on the road Sunday, 62-61. The Bearcats have rattled off four wins in a row, avenging a 76-72 loss at home to the Shockers on Feb. 18. The loss seemed to serve as an alarm clock, and they haven't lost since heading into the AAC Tournament. They're back to playing defense during their winning streak, as the 'under' is 3-1, while going 8-4 across their past 12. The 'under' is also 4-0 in neutral-site games for the Bearcats this season, something to remember as we get into conference tournament play.

Conference Best Bets

Conference Championship Predictions

It?s Championship Tournament time! If you?re like some of us who don?t follow college basketball until about this time of year, the conference brackets are the best way to get primed for the awesomeness that is March Madness.

Here?s a quick rundown of the best bets remaining throughout the week and heading in to this weekend.

The full board for NCAA Conference Futures is here, and we?ve listed the best bets in each grouping for the coming weekend. Get excited. This is when college basketball is at its absolute best. And like I said previously, there?s no better way to get accustomed to these teams for the Big Dance.

ACC Tournament Duke +175
Next Best: Virginia +225 and UNC +600

Everyone else in the ACC is getting very long odds, and while Duke is the obvious pick there?s a good reason that they?re getting great odds here. The team is 19-10 ATS on the regular season and has gone through a rigorous adjustment period following the injury of Marvin Bagley. Shifting Grayson Allen to point guard and installing a zone defence has converted Duke in to a true powerhouse that lives up to its reputation. And now that they have their best player back, Duke is rolling heavy.

People will point to Virginia Tech as a potential sleeper at +1200 seeing as how they have wins over Duke and Virginia but that?s a big stretch. If you?re going to bank on a longshot, then the Hokies are certainly the way to go, but Duke is the most logical play overall.

Big East Tournament Xavier +230
Next Best: Villanova -110

The Big East is an intensely tight group with schools like Butler, Seton Hall and Creighton all getting admirable outsider odds at +700 and +800. Villanova has long been the standard in the Big East, but Xavier has been creeping for quite some time. They were blasted by Villanova the last time they played in a 79-95 blowout loss on their own court, but neutral territory is a worthy equalizer here. The Musketeers play extremely well on the road at 8-3 ATS. Villanova is a heavy favorite here for good reason, but it?s mostly based on reputation. They?ve been pushed to overtime by Seton Hall and Creighton in recent weeks.

Big 12 Tournament West Virginia +300
Next Best: Kansas +200, Texas Tech +450

Is this the year the Mountaineers push it over the top? West Virginia has entered the Big 12 tournament as the second seed twice in the last two years, and lost in the finals both times. They are a wildly entertaining team that has sort of fallen off the radar since the oddsmakers had them dead to rights all season. Kansas?s +200 odds here are more so for reputation than anything else. They are not the kingpin of this conference like many would have you believe, and West Virginia hits the crescendo in 2018 to take their first conference title ever.

Pac-12 Tournament Arizona +225
Next Best: USC +400, Utah +600, Oregon +650

The biggest shock out of championship week would be Arizona losing the Pac-12 Tournament. Their odds are a little bit higher than they should be given that the program is under the microscope, but ESPN?s ?investigation? has proven to be flawed and that?s seriously galvanized this team and its head coach Sean Miller. They are rallying and have perhaps the best player in the country in DeAndre Ayton who is averaging 19.9 points and 11.4 boards this season. People like USC here for good reason, and this conference is very wide open, but no program has an ancillary motivator like Arizona. Love the odds here.

SEC Tournament Kentucky +450
Next Best: Auburn +400, Tennessee +400

Kentucky pretty much owns this tournament and they?re getting big time betting odds here to defend their title for the fourth year in a row. To be clear, they are not the juggernaut that they?ve presented in years past. This is one of the weaker recruiting classes of Calipari?s tenure which is why the mark here is so high. Also, there?s lots of action around Alabama at +1200 despite their five losses to end the regular season. Florida is also getting some nudges in the book as a +500 outsider. For my money, I?m going with the coach who does it time and again but it?s hard not to admit that the SEC is as wide open as ever.

West Coast Conference Gonzaga -220
Next Best: Saint Mary?s +225

If there?s a no brainer in conference championship betting, it?s Gonzaga. They have the easiest conference, are five-time champions and are clearly the class of the group. Don?t overthink this one. They?re just too proven.

American Conference Wichita State +300
Next Best: Cincinnati +175

Cincinnati?s defence shut down the Shockers in the regular season finale during a 62-61 thriller and that?s going to set up a daring rematch in the finals of this conference tournament. Houston is lurking as a +500 third favorite, but we all know that this will come down to the two most grizzled teams. Wichita State gets revenge against Cincinnati?s great defence (2nd in the country) in the finals. I can?t wait for that one.

No. 13 Georgia Tech vs. No. 12 Boston College (ESPN2, 12:00 p.m. ET)

The Yellow Jackets started and closed ACC play strong, but the middle portion was the problem. Tech began 3-1, which included home victories over Miami and Notre Dame, while topping N.C. State and Wake Forest to finish conference play. However, the Ramblin' Wreck went on a 1-11 run following the 3-1 start, but are currently on a 4-0 ATS run. Tech squandered a double-digit lead in its only meeting with Boston College this season, falling to the Eagles in overtime in early February, 80-72.

The Eagles had been the doormat of the ACC for several seasons before posting a 7-11 record. To put it in perspective, the Eagles won six conference in the previous three seasons combined. BC started ACC play with a bang by upsetting Duke in December as 15-point home underdogs, 89-84, while compiling an 11-8 ATS record in conference play. The Eagles struggled down the stretch by losing four of five games, but BC is seeking its third ACC tournament win since 2012 as the previous two victories both came against Georgia Tech.

No. 15 Pittsburgh vs. No. 10 Notre Dame (ESPN2, 2:30 p.m. ET)

The Panthers haven't won a game since 2017 as Pittsburgh finished an incredible 0-18 in the ACC. Pitt put together nearly a brand new roster this season, resulting in their struggles as the Panthers posted a 9-9 ATS record within the conference. The Panthers and Fighting Irish met only once, but it came in the regular season finale in South Bend as Notre Dame pulled away from Pitt, 73-56 as 19-point favorites.

The Fighting Irish suffered through injuries early in ACC season as they started 3-0 in conference play prior to a seven-game skid. Notre Dame won only three of nine ACC games away from South Bend, but the Irish have won the opening game in the ACC tournament in each of the past three years. .

No. 14 Wake Forest
Overall: 11-19 SU, 9-18-1 ATS
Totals: 13-15 O/U

No. 11 Syracuse
Overall: 19-12 SU, 13-16 ATS
Totals: 13-16 O/U

No. 14 Wake Forest vs. No. 11 Syracuse (ESPNU, 7:00 p.m. ET)

The Demon Deacons split their first two ACC games, including a 73-67 come-from-behind win over Syracuse in early January. Wake Forest would win only three of its final 16 conference games, which included a victory over Pittsburgh, who finished 0-18 in the ACC. During its 3-13 stretch to close the season, Wake covered three times, including a 2-9 ATS mark as an underdog.

The Orange needs a solid showing in the ACC tournament for a shot at an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament. Syracuse edged Clemson in the season finale to end a three-game skid, while also beating Miami, Louisville, and Virginia Tech in conference action. The Orange avenged the loss in Winston-Salem to knock off Wake Forest at the Carrier Dome in mid-February, 78-70 as seven-point favorites. Syracuse has never won an ACC tournament by posting an 0-3 record since joining the league.

Tuesday?s List of 13: Some college knowledge??.

13) Over the last 15 years, of the 60 teams who made the Final Four, 26 won their conference tournament. Over last six years, only 7 of 24 Final Four teams won their conference tourney; from 2004-11, 19 of 32 Final Four teams did.

12) 7 of the last 15 national champs won their conference tourney, but only one of the last six.

11) Since 2003, only 8 of 60 Final Four teams lost their first conference tourney game: Here are those teams:
2003? Marquette, Texas
2005? Michigan State
2007? UCLA
2009? UConn
2010? Michigan State (only team to do it twice)
2016? Syracuse
2017? South Carolina

10) Since 2006, two CAA teams have made the Final Four; George Mason in ?06 and VCU five years later. Weird thing is that neither of those teams won the CAA tournament that year. CAA ain?t getting more than one team in NCAA?s anymore, but they did as recently as 2011.

9) In 2011, UConn did something that will never be surpassed; not only did they win the NCAA tournament, winning six games, they had to win another five games to win the Big East tournament? they weren?t getting into the NCAA?s unless they won that tournament.

8) In 2006 and 2007, Florida finished the season by winning both the SEC tournament and the NCAA tournament? thats a very underrated accomplishment- 9-0 finishes both years.

7) In the last 15 years, 2008 was the only Final Four where all four teams won their conference tournament; in 2003 and 2009, none of the Final Four teams won their tournament.

6) Not putting pressure on Montana or anything, but the #1 seed won the last seven Big Sky tournaments. Most of those were at the home court of the #1 seed; they play the tournament on a neutral floor in Reno these days, but still??.

5) Fairfield has basketball players from nine different countries, plus Puerto Rico.

4) Eastern Washington?s Bogdan Bliznyuk has made 74 foul shots in a row, which is an NCAA single-season record.

3) Since the NCAA tournament went to 64, and then 68 teams, #2 seeds are 124-8 in their first round tournament games; here are the eight #2 seeds who lost in the first round:

1990? Richmond (+9) 73, Syracuse 69
1993? Santa Clara (+20) 64, Arizona 61
1997? Coppin State (+17) 78, South Carolina 65
2001? Hampton (+17.5) 58, Iowa State 57
2012? Lehigh (+12) 75, Duke 70
2012? Norfolk State (+21.5) 86, Missouri 84
2013? Florida Gulf Coast (+13.5) 78, Georgetown 68
2016? Middle Tennessee State (+18) 90, Michigan State 81

2) Since 2003, Big Sky teams are 1-14 in first round NCAA tourney games; over the last 11 years, they?re 2-8-1 vs spread in first round games.

1? Big West teams have also had problems in the NCAA?s recently; since 2006, Big West teams are 2-0 in play-in games, but are 1-11 in first round games, 4-8 vs spread.

ACC Conference Tournament First Round betting preview and odds

The first round of the ACC Tournament gets underway in Brooklyn and if any of the teams involved in Tuesday's opening round hope to go dancing, it will take a miracle deep run to a conference tournament title.

Tournament to be played at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Boston College Eagles (-2, 138.5)

Boston College has concluded its winningest season since 2010-11 and looks to extend that success into the opening round of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday against Georgia Tech at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The No. 12-seed Eagles won seven games in conference play this season - sparked by league player-of-the-year runner-up Jerome Robinson and his ACC-leading 20.7 points per game - but struggled down the stretch in Saturday?s 85-76 defeat at Florida State.

The 13th-seeded Yellow Jackets lost seven league games in a row before winning their final two games of the regular season, earning victories over North Carolina State and Wake Forest last week. Josh Okogie hit six free throws in the final 17 seconds of Saturday?s 64-56 victory over the Demon Deacons, and enters the tournament averaging a team-best 18.4 points per game. Tadric Jackson averages 12.1 points per game and has taken over at point guard following the season-ending elbow injury to freshman Jose Alvarado. The Yellow Jackets allow 67.3 points per game, fourth in the ACC and 47th in the nation.

Robinson enjoyed a stellar regular season, averaging 24.3 points per game in ACC contests while hitting 44.5 percent of his 3-point attempts in league action. Fellow guard Ky Bowman is the only player in the nation to average at least 16.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game this season. Boston College leads the ACC in made 3-pointers per game (8.8) and the Eagles are one of just three teams in the nation to have a trio of players (Jordan Chatman, Robinson and Bowman) to make at least 73 3-pointers this season.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-16.5, 133.5)

Notre Dame finally has a healthy lineup as it attempts to make a run in the ACC Tournament, which starts with a matchup against 15th seed Pittsburgh on Tuesday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Senior forward Bonzie Colson has averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds in two games since his return from a broken foot for the 10th-seeded Fighting Irish, who gave No. 1 Virginia all it could handle in a 62-57 setback Saturday.

The Irish, who are 12-4 with Colson in the lineup, will most likely need multiple wins in the ACC tournament to open the eyes of the NCAA committee to earn a bid in the Big Dance and knocking off a young Pittsburgh squad is essential. The Irish were also 1-4 when Matt Farrell was out with an ankle injury and the senior guard contributes 16.8 points with team highs of 5.3 assists and 86 made 3-pointers while being named third team All-ACC.

The Panthers have lost a program-record 18 consecutive games - all in ACC play - and were beaten by double figures in 15 of them, including a 73-56 decision at Notre Dame on Wednesday. Junior guard Jared Wilson-Frame scored 20 in the loss against the Irish and is the only active Panther averaging in double figures (12.8) while draining 71 shots from 3-point range.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs Syracuse Orange (-4, 133)

Syracuse and Wake Forest clash for the third time this season Tuesday as the 11th-seeded Orange and the 14th-seeded Demon Deacons meet in the first round of the ACC Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The teams split the two meetings this season, with Wake Forest winning 73-67 at home Jan. 3 and Syracuse returning the favor 78-70 on Feb. 11.

The Orange come in feeling good about themselves after boosting their NCAA Tournament hopes with a much-needed marquee win as they edged No. 20 Clemson in their regular-season finale Saturday. Sophomore guard Tyus Battle and freshman forward Oshae Brissett each had 17 points to lead the way against Clemson and both were recognized by the league on Sunday, with Battle earning All-ACC second team honors and Brissett being named to the All-ACC freshman team. Battle is the offensive leader for the Orange and finished the season ranked third in ACC scoring at 20 points per game on 41 percent shooting while leading the NCAA in minutes per game (38.9).

Wake Forest's final regular-season game didn't go as well as it fell 64-56 at Georgia Tech on Saturday for its second consecutive loss. Bryant Crawford, the team's leading scorer (16.7), had 22 to lead Wake Forest against Georgia Tech for his ninth 20-point game of the season and sixth in conference play. Doral Moore, a 7-1 junior center, added 12 points and 13 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and was one of just two players to average a double-double in ACC action - with Duke's Marvin Bagley III being the other.

BETTING STATS:

59ypnn.jpg

BETTING ACTION AND LINE MOVEMENT:

Syracuse opened as 3-point favorites and that number was quickly pushed up slightly to -4. The total hit betting boards at 133 and has yet to move as of Monday night.

* Under is 4-1 in Orange's last 5 neutral site games.

TOP 25 THIS WEEK: League tourneys set to impact NCAA seeding
March 6, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Selection Sunday is now days away, making this week the last chance for teams to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, stay close to home - or simply earn a bid.

The Big Ten has already wrapped up its early tournament , with seventh-ranked Michigan playing its way into similar position as last year when the Wolverines got hot late, won the league tournament and went on to the NCAA Sweet 16. And the West Coast Conference concludes with Tuesday's final between No. 6 Gonzaga and BYU in Las Vegas.

Now college basketball's other top conferences are heading into their tournaments. The Atlantic Coast Conference opens Tuesday. The Big East, Big 12, Pac-12, Southeastern Conference open play Wednesday, while the American Athletic Conference Tournament starts Thursday.

Here are storylines to watch:

ACC

Top-ranked Virginia, which became the unanimous No. 1 in the AP Top 25 on Monday, begins in Thursday's quarterfinals and looks solid for a No. 1 NCAA seed regardless of what happens in Brooklyn . The Cavaliers are No. 1 in the RPI and in KenPom, won the ACC regular-season race by four games and own a 9-1 record against Quadrant 1 opponents through Sunday's games - Quadrant 1 contests are home games vs. teams ranked 1-30 in RPI, neutral games vs. 1-50 and away games vs. 1-75.

The other question is what happens with rivals Duke and North Carolina.

The fifth-ranked Blue Devils open play in Thursday's quarterfinals while sitting at No. 3 in KenPom and No. 4 in the RPI. A run to a second straight ACC Tournament title could help them snag a No. 1 seed.

As for the No. 12 Tar Heels, they finished tied for third in the standings but ended up as the No. 6 seed due to tiebreakers. Yet they enter Wednesday's second-round game against the Wake Forest-Syracuse winner with 10 Quadrant 1 wins, second only to Kansas (11) - and that could have them in contention for a 2-seed despite their low ACC Tournament seeding.

The ACC has a national-best five teams in the AP Top 25.

BIG EAST

Villanova hopped over Xavier to reach No. 2 in Monday's poll, though the third-ranked Musketeers are the No. 1 seed in the Big East Tournament. And Villanova swept the regular-season series.

Both teams open play in Thursday's quarterfinals in New York's Madison Square Garden, with Xavier facing the St. John's-Georgetown winner and Villanova facing the DePaul-Marquette winner. And one - maybe both? - could end up earning No. 1 NCAA seeds.

BIG 12

Ninth-ranked Kansas enters the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, as the top seed and in the running for a No. 1 NCAA seed. The Jayhawks face the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State winner in Thursday's quarterfinals.

No. 14 Texas Tech, the second seed, opens play against the Iowa State-Texas winner, while No. 18 West Virginia faces bubble team Baylor to wrap up the quarterfinals.

PAC-12

No. 15 Arizona enters the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas as the top seed. The Wildcats will face the Arizona State-Colorado winner in Thursday's quarterfinals as the only AP Top 25 team in the field.

SEC

The Southeastern Conference Tournament begins Wednesday in St. Louis and ends Sunday a few hours before the field of 68 is announced. No. 13 Tennessee and No. 16 Auburn shared the regular-season title, though the Tigers claimed the No. 1 seed.

Both teams open play in Friday's quarterfinals, with Auburn facing the Alabama-Texas A&M winner and Tennessee facing the LSU-Mississippi State winner.

No. 23 Florida is the other ranked team in the SEC field.

AAC

No. 8 Cincinnati and No. 11 Wichita State met over the weekend to determine the American Athletic Conference regular-season title. Could they do it again in the AAC Tournament?

Both look like candidates to be a No. 3 seed at least depending on how things go in Orlando when the tournament begins Thursday. The top-seeded Bearcats open in Friday's quarterfinals against the SMU-Connecticut winner, while the second-seeded Shockers face the Tulane-Temple winner.

Also lurking in Wichita State's half of the bracket is No. 21 Houston, which is closing in on its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2010 and only its second in 26 years. The Cougars face the East Carolina-UCF winner.
