probably don't need the expertise of KMA, just someone with better knowledge than myself (like maybe the RAT or Beanie or something)

Tried yesterday to run the recovery cd in my daughters puter. I've never run recovery before where the cd didn't automatically start running after popping it in so that all i had to do was follow promps.... SIGH, not this time, and i'm LOST.

what i've tried is clicking on RUN, browsing for the CD, but i can only open individual things listed and have no clue as to where to begin. Any help having this thing up and running better before she gets home from school would be appreciated. :)

i've already tried rebooting while the CD was in the drive, but it still didn't start running automatically. (suppose it could be something in her settings where she prevented it from doing it)

oh, one other possibility if anyone can help me on this... would using the WRONG CD stop it from running on it's own? She and her brother have identical machines, and neither myself or the Geek Squad at BB could tell which box of accessories originally came with which computer.... if all else fails, guess i should dig the other box back out of the shed.

It could be if the cd is not bootable it would not run when you rebooted, which might be the wrong cd at that point.

The other thing is to try and hit like F12 when you reboot when you see the logo on the screen. it should give you a prompt to how you want to boot the computer, so you could select a cd drive.

it's an E-Machine Notebook from Best Buy ... judging from some of the warranty paperwork agreements inside of the box, i'm guessing it is some sort of Gateway.

BSU... because she can mess up a computer faster than anyone i know......LOL ... can't even get online without trying to close out about 400 pop-ups.... this girl will download ANYTHING and EVERYTHING!!!!

when i first tried running recovery yesterday afternoon, (and it wouldn't run) decided to see how far back i could go with a system restore..... it went back about 8 minutes (when i tried to run recovery) and wouldn't let me restore to a point earlier than that....

if i could find an easy way to clean up her mess rather than returning her computer to out of the box condition i would so that she wouldn't lose things she has saved... i can't even get anywhere uninstalling the crap she has. if i wait till x-mas she'll have a new pen-drive to save things she wants to keep... otherwise, i don't CARE, i want it working right so she doesn't complain about it all the time. and i warned her that if i EVER see anything with the word GATOR, AIM or Bigfix again she was out of luck..... she could just buy herself a new laptop if she wanted one ;)

When yah insert a CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or the DVD-ROM drive, the CD-ROM might not automatically run. The Autorun.inf file and the programs that the Autorun.inf file is designed to run may not run if you are logged on to Windows XP as a user without either Power User or Administrator rights. By default, only users who are logged on to Windows XP with Power User or Administrator rights are allowed to install software. In Windows XP, files that have an .inf extension are considered to be setup information files. As a result, the Autorun.inf file does not run if you do not have Power User or Administrator rights. Look for a .inf file and run it.
