This is a broad question but heres a few ?

How much HD space do you have?

Have you defreagged your comp recently?

Have you run scandisk?

Defrag is needed at least once a month, but hey if you do it every week, no harm!! Thats really good!!!!!!!!!

However try to scandisk more, it cleans up the computer registry and files all over the place, your comp runs better if you run once a week.

Mav

Give me all the specs of your comp

ex: processor speed, how much ram...

anything you know and can give will help me.

THANKS!

OK Processor speed is good and rest seems fine.

How long has it been since you have reformated the HD.. You might have to do a fresh clean. becuase it seems to me like your computer crapped up and now is showing you its effects.

But look at the processes

hit CTL/ALT/DEL and then look at process and see what is taking up the most processing speed and see if you can close it out.

It is very hard to diagnose this because there are so many issues that it could be, but if you do a fresh clean it will run smoothe again!!

Let me know if you need more help and what you want to do.

First off, no you do not need to reformat your hard drive. It sounds as if you have low resources on your pc and there are a few things you can do.

You can definitely stand to use another stick of memory, that's for sure. I have 1 gig of memory in mine, which is about 8 times what you have, just so you'll know the difference. Before you set out to buy another 128MB stick of RAM, be sure to pop open the case and read the label on the stick to see whether it is PC100 or PC133.

First thing you can do is check your resources. Right click on 'My Computer', then 'Properties' and 'Performance'. If it's showing less than 85%, you have too many programs running in the background. To maximize your resources, go to 'Start', 'Run', type 'msconfig', press OK, click the 'Startup' tab and uncheck all items except System Tray, Scan Registry, Task Monitor, and Load Power Profile. Click OK and restart the pc.

Let me know if this helps.

Re: Computer experts.........MSN 8 DellNet........

Do what Monk said. You're not supposed to clear everything in the msconfig Startup folder. There are certain items you need to leave in. DJTranks is right on the money....more memory would definitely help.

Well from being a computer tech. for the past 4 years, as I said Monk, more ram could do the trick, but I have seen so many crapped up HD's and the BEST solution is to refromat..

Does he have to ? Absolutly not, but whenever ppl hear reformat they have a heart attack, News flash, it should be done at least once every year and ppl dont do it for many years, which could be the case here.

Also if you look at my post I said to look at resorces first, I dont want to sound defensive, but as said I have been doing this for a long time now.

It is also hard to diagnose a problem without being there to see it as well, but good info from everybody helps!!!!

Help me out here but where in this thread did you ever mention him needing more RAM? I never see mention of you telling him to "check his resources first" either.

Not to prevail over your 4 whole years of tech work but you're essentially advising a computer novice to reformat his hard drive out of all things, not an easy task and certainly not one of the first steps in solving a minute problem.

I won't rain on your parade so carry on Colonel Tranks.

It seems like you have a laptop with only a 16 gig hard drive.

I have a laptop about same specs pent. 111 and all.

My hard drive is used about 9 gigs out of 20.

I had the same problem.

I think it happens alot when you download and upload pics and alot of porn and also kazaa.

I increased my ram from 128 to the max 512 and it did squat:thefinger .

What I did was first get rid of as much pics and porn videos and than I simply inserted a copy of my windows in and refraged the hard drive which took about 1/2 hour for windows xe pro. It was so simple and I did not lose any programs. I do that whenever things get real slow and it works great for a couple months.

Also, be sure to free up as much as you can on your hard drive by deleteing all those porn videos and pics that you can.

Good advice DJ on the money!!

When you insert the copy of windows in , be sure to not install a fresh copy . Do the other choice which I think is upgrade or somthing so that you wont delete any programs

The guy only has a 16 gig hard drive and probably over half is used up already ;)

Everyboby thinks ram all the time because the cheapest upgrade(poor mans upgrade)

Ram may work better on a pc with a bigger hard drive but not that well with a laptop ;)

I spent months trying to find out why mine goes slow sometimes and this is what I found out that works. Also be sure to defrag and scandisk and delete as must bs as you can on that hard drive

Yeah Ram only helps to run a lot of things at once, and it will make comp go smoother, processer makes comp go faster!

But try those things and see how it works!!!

Good advice guys!!
