agree with some of the others here. I don't think its your hard drive at all. I think its your power supply. Same thing happened to mine last month. I found a tech on craigslist, and he went to best buy and bought me a compatible power supply and installed. It was like 100 bucks for everything and the power supply cost 70 bucks or something.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...upply&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1204331807576

something like this is what you are looking for, but make sure its compatible with your system.

also, he made me promise to buy an external hard drive which backs up all my data at a set time daily every day. i don't even know its doing it. Even if my computer crashes I still will have everything.

something like this is what you are looking for.

If it's not the power supply and you don't want to have to pay extra to have your old hard drive transferred over if you get a new computer you can look into getting a hard drive enclosure (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...tlc.asp?CatId=2777&name=Hard-Drive-Enclosure). If you hook that up it would cause your old hard drive to act as an external drive (it wouldn't boot from it). Then you could do all of your transfers and stuff from there to your new one. I don't think it'll let you boot from it because with XP I believe if you make major hardware changes it wants you to reinstall windows before it'll let it boot from that drive.

As far as the problem if it's not the power supply (when mine went it wouldn't turn on at all) and it's a fan it could be your computer overheating and that's why it's shutting down. Computers, especially laptops, get hot really fast. Fans are cheap and easy to replace.

I had my operating system (xp) crash a couple weeks ago. I took it to Circuit City and had them reinstall and it was 130.00

While your there, spend the 200.00 on a single push button daily back up drive and never worry again...

fukin gateway

Yep, have to agree...had something similar happen to my gateway....fuk 'em. When I took it in, they said it overheated (laptop) and fried the motherboard. Damn thing was only about a month after the warranty had expired...

Bought a new Toshiba laptop, so far so good.....

I do save a lot of my important stuff on one of those USB memory drives, so that didn't hurt too much. I do understand your frustration when the machine first goes down....

On the course!
And Jack......If you have that much on your computer.....You really do need an exterior hard drive back-up like those others said.

Don't mess around waiting to do that. Get that when you get this mess fixed, EVEN IF IT'S NOT THE PROBLEM.

Good luck, and I hope it a cheap fix!

If you can take a road trip today, come down to Bowling Green, and my brother will fix it. He's the best.

I think it's something not too bad like a bad power supply. I bet BSUcards can fix it if he has time and isn't too busy. Isn't he pretty close to you?

This is not a difficult fix for a good tech. You should have no problems getting it fixed.

Take this as a cheap lesson, though. Buy an external hard drive TODAY and back up everything weekly.

Good luck, Jack.

thanks for all the help. it was the power source. most places in town wanted $50 to look at it and would be 3-5 days to even do that. found a guy that didn't charge to look at it but 24-72 hours. took it in monday and it's fixed. $95...not bad. no data loss. i just told him to fix it when he called. i think it's a fair deal. going to pick her up now :D

I agree. The power supply is the most common part to fail on modern computers. In fact, most experts recommend leaving your computer on all the time for this reason.

Very simple to replace, Jack. That is where I would start.

EDIT: I just read where you already got the damn thing fixed. :SIB
