I have a bit of a problem with a Dell desktop. Based on the dialogue below, what do you think might be the issue? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a power supply /motherboard issue

Hard to tell, because you get some power, but nothing else, if the fans are not spinning they are connected to the power supply but then again there are fans on the processor which is attached and powered to the motherboard.

new power supply is 40 dollars, and if that don't fix it then probably a system board which means you basically have to replace the system. You should be able to take power supply back if it doesn't fix your problem.

Motherboard issue. Taking it to a friend tomorrow for a thorough analysis.

Never thought a Dell could fail in only 3 years.

Another good reason to use something like Mozy to backup your data

https://mozy.com/home/free

I use this for all my documents and then use

http://picasa.google.com/ to upload photos to the web. If you upload the pictures in 800 X 600 format, you get unlimited storage

Trust me it is worth the time to get this setup. In your case it is a motherboard issue, but sure would be nice to know that you could simply download all your files on another computer without needing an IT guys help

Few things -

Check your power supply.......really. The cord, the connection....

Then, open up the case. Look inside for charred circuits. Use a flashlight.

Nothing still?

Mother board....................get a new one or buy a mac.

There are other things to try, but hard to explain in a forum.
