I was stationed there for 3 years, 98-01, and it never was listed as Confederate Hereos Day.

I lived in Texas for 39 of my nearly 54 years on this earth and today is the first time I have ever heard of this absurd "holiday". Perhaps that is because I have made a point of distancing myself from the ignorant rednecks that strive to give our fine state a bad reputation.
At the time in our country's history that the Civil War occurred, Texas was a sovereign nation and unfortunately, our government choose to side on the side of those that preferred slavery. That was a regrettable decision which we will forever be associated with and which ultimately led to the demise of the Republic of Texas.
Any Texan who celebrates this "holiday" is in my opinion, a traitor and I personally have no respect for either Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis.
