Day 6 here and all is well. my piercing headaches have stopped and I no longer find myself thinking about how much I would like a smoke. I sincerely believe that I have this thing licked. One problem does remain and that is that my tongue and throat get sore. I assume that this is a side effect of the 4mg nicorette gum. Is anybody else having the same experience?

Welcome 3 seconds, if we can do it you can as well !

I DO NOT SMOKE!!!

Jack, I was going to berate you but I know how ineffective that is! I'm not disappointed that you cracked.... hell, we're all fighting that and one little slide does not the battle end. I was a bit concerned that you were initially deciding to try again "tomorrow" since today was shot and am glad to see that you changed that to "immediately".

I'm learning that it's never a good time and that we can all make excuses until the cows come home but that doesn't help clear our lungs and improve our health. It simply delays the inevitable. The only way to stop is to "Just say No!" Hehehehhe.... who'd ever have thought that I'd be quoting Nancy Reagan?!?

I am a non-smoker. Congrats to all who are working or re-working the program! Also, thanks to Bear and all of those who are giving us encouragement and positive reinforcement

Five days, 13 hours, 31 minutes and 22 seconds
111 cigarettes not smoked
Money saving $13.07
Life saved: 9 hours, 15 minutes :)

111 cigs is 5 and a half packs. Shouldnt the savings be more than 13.07 ?? You must have gotten your cigs for a very nice price. Congrats on the job you and the rest are doing.

Jack hang in there and dont get disappointed

Jack, WTF? You made it that long and then gave in? I dont get it! And you were +8,000? Lets hear how it happened, spill the beans so you can learn from it and maybe others too. It had to make you feel like shit (physically) after no cigs for that long. Head rush, rapid pulse, the whole deal, right? You can do this, one relapse is not the end of it just get right back on it!

I just hate to see you smoke because you took a bad beat. It CANT be that fragile bro, you are stronger than a ciggarette Jack I know I have met you and if you not smoking hinges on winning or losing you wont make it. You were looking for a reason to light up and you know it, its a self fullfilling prophecy. You dont smoke anymore dammit! I (and lots of others) want you around for a while so you had your 1 chance and thats it, beat this!

I dont think anyone realizes how hard it is to kick unless they been through it.

For you guys to make it 6 days is baby steps. You got to be in it for the long haul. After 2 months without smoking a cigarette then you can begin to feel you may make it.

In the group that jack posted proably only 20 - 30 % will make it to a year of non smoking. I was in that group many times in the past trying to quit.

Havnt seen Bahama Mama lately. Something tells me she is got the new job and is smoking like a steam engine.

Stay strong. One of the most difficult things in life to quit.

It really is a nasty habit. I want one right now but the feeling will pass.

Good Reasons for Quitting

Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you will ever do:

You will live longer and live better.

Quitting will lower your chance of having a heart attack, stroke, or cancer.

If you are pregnant, quitting smoking will improve your chances of having a healthy baby.

The people you live with, especially your children, will be healthier.

You will have extra money to spend on things other than cigarettes.
........................................................................
Five Keys for Quitting

Studies have shown that these five steps will help you quit and quit for good. You have the best chances of quitting if you use them together:

Be prepared for relapse or difficult situations.

1. Get Ready

Set a quit date.

Change your environment.

Get rid of ALL cigarettes and ashtrays in your home, car, and place of work.

Don't let people smoke in your home.
Review your past attempts to quit. Think about what worked and what did not.

Once you quit, don't smoke?NOT EVEN A PUFF!

2. Get Support and Encouragement
Studies have shown that you have a better chance of being successful if you have help. You can get support in many ways:

Tell your family, friends, and coworkers that you are going to quit and want their support. Ask them not to smoke around you or leave cigarettes out.

Talk to your health care provider (for example, doctor, dentist, nurse, pharmacist, psychologist, or smoking counselor).

Get individual, group, or telephone counseling. The more counseling you have, the better your chances are of quitting. Programs are given at local hospitals and health centers. Call your local health department for information about programs in your area.

3. Learn New Skills and Behaviors

Try to distract yourself from urges to smoke. Talk to someone, go for a walk, or get busy with a task.

When you first try to quit, change your routine. Use a different route to work. Drink tea instead of coffee. Eat breakfast in a different place.

Do something to reduce your stress. Take a hot bath, exercise, or read a book.

Plan something enjoyable to do every day.

Drink a lot of water and other fluids.

4. Get Medication and Use It Correctly
Medications can help you stop smoking and lessen the urge to smoke.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five medications to help you quit smoking:

Bupropion SR?Available by prescription.

Nicotine gum?Available over-the-counter.

Nicotine inhaler?Available by prescription.

Nicotine nasal spray?Available by prescription.

Nicotine patch?Available by prescription and over-the-counter.
Ask your health care provider for advice and carefully read the information on the package.

All of these medications will more or less double your chances of quitting and quitting for good.

Everyone who is trying to quit may benefit from using a medication. If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, nursing, under age 18, smoking fewer than 10 cigarettes per day, or have a medical condition, talk to your doctor or other health care provider before taking medications.

5. Be Prepared for Relapse or Difficult Situations
Most relapses occur within the first 3 months after quitting. Don't be discouraged if you start smoking again. Remember, most people try several times before they finally quit. Here are some difficult situations to watch for:

Alcohol. Avoid drinking alcohol. Drinking lowers your chances of success.
Other smokers. Being around smoking can make you want to smoke.
Weight gain. Many smokers will gain weight when they quit, usually less than 10 pounds. Eat a healthy diet and stay active. Don't let weight gain distract you from your main goal?quitting smoking. Some quit-smoking medications may help delay weight gain.
Bad mood or depression. There are a lot of ways to improve your mood other than smoking.

If you are having problems with any of these situations, talk to your doctor or other health care provider.

Special Situations or Conditions

Studies suggest that everyone can quit smoking. Your situation or condition can give you a special reason to quit.

Pregnant women/new mothers: By quitting, you protect your baby's health and your own.

Hospitalized patients: By quitting, you reduce health problems and help healing.

Heart attack patients: By quitting, you reduce your risk of a second heart attack.

Lung, head, and neck cancer patients: By quitting, you reduce your chance of a second cancer.

Parents of children and adolescents: By quitting, you protect your children and adolescents from illnesses caused by second-hand smoke.

you guys sound like a bunch of women at a candle party.

ITS THIS EASY

IF U WANNA QUIT, U QUIT...IF U DONT...U WONT

thats how i did it...and with a lotta help from my higher power.

i had smoked for 43 years and i promised GOD that if he helped me out...I WOULD QUIT

HE helped me and i quit.

it has been since dec 14th and i have no desire to have a cig.

so just make a decision...not all these petty ass excuses on why not to quit. just look at the excuses on why to quit.

dope

PS: i have no longer have any vices and that sucks...ugh
