A room on The Strip cheap as $14, but with $35 resort fee...and I needed to organize my trunk after all the driving. And tired of schlepping my bags down long parking garages and hallways - so $30 room at Howard Johnson, right by Hooter's Casino (whose building originally opened as a Howard Johnson's in 1972). Back up my car right to the door of my room, and no resort fee!...comfy but tiny room...

as much as I love dry aged beef from the cold locker, I opted for much cheaper, but still fine, mongolian beef dish at the fine Chin Chin restaurant next to it

3 good choices on a side street of Planet Hollywood, right next to each other! BWW, Nacho Daddy..The Hot N Juicy Crawfish is a local seafood chain that now has outlets in DC, NYC, CA, Tempe, FL...

I put together a made-to-order Poke rice bowl at Poukei in Miracle Mile Shops (the mall at Planet Hollywood). $14 (yeah, it's only $9 on the food trucks in LA...) you choose rice (I got the sticky sushi rice) two proteins (3 large tempura shrimp here, and generous scoop of raw salmon) veggies and sauces. It was good! And filling, which was more important at the time...this place was getting zero business at dinnertime, I can't see it lasting here very long...

the fountain started up as I strolled into Bellagio around the construction/repairs at pedestrian entrance.

and the construction continues - they don't have the Xmas display ready yet in the Bellagio Conservatory!

when I drove into Las Vegas (Weds) the only incident on the traffic report was that parts of the Strip were closed due to NASCAR filming some burnouts for the awards in Las Vegas this week!....these were on display at the entrance to The Park at T-Mobile Arena.

This is nice - Fatburger has a 24 hr bar on the strip, with specials during NFL games....

I always liked this playing card artwork by poker room in Aria Casino

aba9091ac022cb6868a4f18aed13e1ff.jpg

and I tried here my first every savory crepe - having only eaten dessert crepes before. This one, called "The Italian", at the Jean Phillipe patisserie in Aria has roasted tomatoes, grilled zucchini, argula, ricotta cheese spread - topped with prosciutto and basil pesto mixed with mustard - real good! .. as was the chocolate cheese cake (a round one encased in a thin white chocolate shell)

looking at these pastries again almost makes me take a walk right now to get another one!

this is clever - you rent a portable rechargeable battery charger for your phone, but if you don't return it by a certain deadline, then they automatically charge you for purchasing it.

Friday night my buddy and his girl played a new spot for them - The Tavern. It is at Rainbow Blvd and Charleston. About a 7 mile drive NW from mid-Strip. Place is popular, at the back of a dark strip mall on Rainbow...Only locals would know this place is here.

cool leather booth seating. Has darts, pool tables, bar video poker...very friendly local crowd and bartenders...It'd be a real good spot for NFL Sunday as they get all the games have have tons of TVs and spots all over to sit and watch...

and some fine pics of some folk's great grandmas in the Men's Bathroom...

I got the pulled pork and slaw sliders at The Tavern. Real good except a bit too salty for my tastes. My brother (the chef) sez these short order cooks are all smokers and with subsequent stunted taste buds, they tend to over salt stuff...

Saturday lunchtime I drove to Hard Rock Casino. Turns out from my room I can drive there, self park, and stroll to sports book betting window in 15 minutes!

ate at this fine place across the street (Paradise Rd). Spicy italian and spicy thai very tempting, but I hadda get the classic Brat....came with carmelized onion, sauerkraut, spicy mustard on grilled bun. Really good!

Sunday morning I motored down to South Point Casino to watch and listen to Brent Musberger's sports betting radio show. You notice it is broadcast live from inside a glass room next to the sports book.

Typical Michael Gaughan touch - his casino still offers the $1.25 Vienna Beef hotdogs by sports book....I listened to the radio show using the show app and South Point's free wifi for my phone and ear buds...all the talk helped me put together a winning parlay!

24cb1a2120758c2ec3bda388f52bdcc3.jpg

I drove back to the Strip up Las Vegas Blvd. South Point Casino is some 6 miles south of middle Strip....I stopped off by Whole Foods in Town Market (about a mile and a half south of Mandalay Bay Casino) to get some clam chowder

28a2047279929cc9df379424bf53e0fc.jpg

and dinner that night was Ramen noodle bowl! In a strip mall "Chinatown" area, about 3 miles directly west on Spring Mountain Rd from Wynn and Palazzo casinos..

a nice easy and simple menu!...they make fresh noodles by hand daily.

Monday I drove about cashing tickets and shopping some. A cool guitar on display at The Hard Rock

for celebration dinner after a big winning Sunday I walked down this long corridor at Venetian Casino to eat at Bouchon

be9809ed23b6010f1bfb0f6b3da93e52.jpg

started with onion soup and glass of Mo?t & Chandon "Imp?rial" Brut Champagne. Wine was more fruity and less sweet than I recall, I think they are using less surgar now..I'm gonna have to move up from Brut to Sec, or more, to get my sweetness said the bartender...soup I really liked, not as bold and spicy as many onions, and less strong cheese on top than the usual.

54c89f10dc358f63e85c5992f5b3e14a.jpg

main course was steak and fries. The fries are talked about a lot here, but I guess I don't share the taste in that style of fries - seemed pretty darn average for fresh cut fries to me!...I much prefer the hand cut homestyle fries like ya get at Five Guys and most fancy bars.

the steak was superb, buttery and rich beefy flavor, a classic flatiron steak, with that frenchy butter on top.

Tues I woke up late, then I worked hard picking a bunch of losers to bet on. New billboard on the street here:

ebfafda0691d419bddc661f7573bba03.jpg

went to eat at Whole Foods (and shop at Container Store and Fry's Electronics nearby). Drooled over the salame and ham here

2f00aada9baad7c8effbb388e1f199da.jpg

but ended up getting the Maryland Crab Cake sandwich (with pickled red onions, butter lettuce, and a caper remoulade on a ciabatta roll)

At Whole Foods I got some mini meals and snacks, a few the of the sort you just add boiling water. My room has no microwave, but there are plenty of these relatively healthy items I can prepare with just the coffee maker in my room.

0d531795b54761858d06f9f7a0db285f.jpg

later I stopped by a regular Vons grocery story - shopping just seems right and back to normal when you see a row of slot machines while checking out.

7a1a6e85ef6086fae302c8bf48bb0197.jpg

I woke up late next day, handicap some games and watch a movie, then drove out to Orleans Casino to place my bets (they comped me 3 drink tickets) and catch my buddy's music gig - only it was cancelled at the last minute, closed!

648b8b4f6f180b9bb6fa946dd211d98f.jpg

I didn't notice his Facebook announcement of the cancellation. He was told it was due to an "employee meeting". But he said he thought of checking it out to see if some other band got his gig! But no, I corraled a few food workers I saw scurring into the closed restaurant and they separately reported the private function is a meeting of the board of directors for Boyd Gaming.

well, my dinner plans here dashed, I strolled about the casino, looked at the restaurants and digest the 3 well drinks I had, checked out the Prime Rib Loft - decided then to drive out to Lawry's Prime Rib. Be a perfect time, right after 5pm opening, as I have no reservations.

5ed0a0ac0e476360eb9cd600b1b38453.jpg

I've never eaten there, but grew up with their famous seasoned salt, my mom always had some on hand. And later we'd see pictures of the football players each year, following tradition, eating at Lawry's before the Rose Bowl ("Lawry?s Beef Bowl", always held in the Beverly Hills, CA, location).

02abce86ce6c6caa13ea8f4cbd263d72.jpg

I got the fine oyster appetizer, and the tasty Manhattan (Templeton Rye, sweet vermouth and slow-cooked wild Italian Amarena stemless cherry)..that fancy cherry was good...

4a15e66c351570d651675f4f9b06f0ec.jpg

Their famous spinning salad came with some french dressing, not the caesar dressing I expected. But good! I like the salad spun, so I then don't have to mix the dressing in so imperfectly myself. Lazy.

db6be312de0c445b963c2c489d7c4fd4.jpg

I got the 10oz "Lawry's Cut", and the standard mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. It actually filled me up....and for basic meat and potatoes - hard to beat this meal!

2342450400efbe9b4f3e093f1518650d.jpg

and that is the last fancy expensive dinner until I win another parlay..

The Nationals Final Rodeo is in town, and plenty of specials on prime rib - I was tempted to eat it two nights in a row!

8379a429db16256b28c712a3f26cc889.jpg

I strolled among the vendors in a huge convention hall at Mandalay Bay and found a pair of black dress boots I want (lost my last ones), but they weren't on sale...yet...

turns out there is a small Fat Tuesday's right at the Luxor entrance to the shops that line the long walkway which connects the Luxor to Mandalay Bay!

2ddfeddace8f9f71acdd18631b3b2432.jpg

my buddy Rocky and his girl had a show and CD release party Fri night in Henderson. I decided that's a fine opportunity to try the only bibimbap restaurant in the valley!

Bibim Kitchen Healthy Korean Bowl - build-their-own rice bowls. I started with classic and ancient stone bowl (they way they did it 5000 years ago). You choose the rice, which is the base, they a couple meats to pile on (I got beef bulgogi and spicy pork bulgogi) then you get to choose 6 of the veggies (I got carrots, radishes, shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, corn and kimchi). For a sauce I got sweet and spicy. And I got it topped with a fried egg and sesame oil.....$12 and sooo good and healthy, I could eat it 3 or 4 times a week!

the CD release party was in the small but very nice restaurant/bar "Slice 19" at the Chimera Golf Course. The owner really likes Stef and Rocky, he even put in a dance floor for them, and upgraded the sound and lights.
