At Whole Foods I got some mini meals and snacks, a few the of the sort you just add boiling water. My room has no microwave, but there are plenty of these relatively healthy items I can prepare with just the coffee maker in my room.
later I stopped by a regular Vons grocery story - shopping just seems right and back to normal when you see a row of slot machines while checking out.
I woke up late next day, handicap some games and watch a movie, then drove out to Orleans Casino to place my bets (they comped me 3 drink tickets) and catch my buddy's music gig - only it was cancelled at the last minute, closed!
I didn't notice his Facebook announcement of the cancellation. He was told it was due to an "employee meeting". But he said he thought of checking it out to see if some other band got his gig! But no, I corraled a few food workers I saw scurring into the closed restaurant and they separately reported the private function is a meeting of the board of directors for Boyd Gaming.
well, my dinner plans here dashed, I strolled about the casino, looked at the restaurants and digest the 3 well drinks I had, checked out the Prime Rib Loft - decided then to drive out to Lawry's Prime Rib. Be a perfect time, right after 5pm opening, as I have no reservations.
I've never eaten there, but grew up with their famous seasoned salt, my mom always had some on hand. And later we'd see pictures of the football players each year, following tradition, eating at Lawry's before the Rose Bowl ("Lawry?s Beef Bowl", always held in the Beverly Hills, CA, location).
I got the fine oyster appetizer, and the tasty Manhattan (Templeton Rye, sweet vermouth and slow-cooked wild Italian Amarena stemless cherry)..that fancy cherry was good...
Their famous spinning salad came with some french dressing, not the caesar dressing I expected. But good! I like the salad spun, so I then don't have to mix the dressing in so imperfectly myself. Lazy.
I got the 10oz "Lawry's Cut", and the standard mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. It actually filled me up....and for basic meat and potatoes - hard to beat this meal!
and that is the last fancy expensive dinner until I win another parlay..
