Kind of dumb question but I need to know?

What is the criteria for getting a save as a closer, three runs or less lead going into ninth.

OR can it be 6 run lead with 3 on when you come in, 5 run lead with four on, etc.

Can someone please help me?

A pitcher is credited with a save when he finishes a game won by his club, is not the winning pitcher, and either (a) enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning, (b) enters the game with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck, or (c) pitches effectively for at least three innings.

On the course!
I believe the pitcher of record needs to pitch to the minimum batters needed to tie the game.

That is to say, when you are up 10-0, and face 3 batters, it is not a save.

If you come in with the bases loaded, up by 3, and get the last out, it is a save.

There might be more to it, but I am not sure.

oficial rule

10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

(a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
(b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or

(c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings.

No more than one save may be credited in each game.
