Absolutely the most perfect player I have ever seen. Does everything right and is a class act all the way.

Greatest shortstop ever.

As the announcer said so perfectly last night....."Derek Jeter, where fantasy becomes reality."

Exactly.

Is he a great guy and a class act? Sure, why not.

However, 'greatest' in terms of him as a player is absurd.

By what measure is he the greatest? Outside subjective blushing by someone who is either a fan of Jeter or the Yanks, or both, there isn't anything that points to him being labeled close to the top.

I really dont get how you can say this when it is clearly pointed out in that 6 minutes that its really not even debatable.

I like him and love that he played for the same team his whole career, but I was shocked to see how poorly his career stats stack up just against other Yankees.

Hell, if Tulo actually goes to the Yankees and produces at half his current rate they will have to rename the city after him.

Due to the 'Culture of Now' most people consider him the greatest Yankee ever. Greatest shortstop ever. No he isn't. However, it is true he is the most iconic Yankee of this generation and he is/was a great player but not perfect. When I think of great Yankees, and I say this objectively as a Dodger fan and Yankee hater, I think of Jeter and DiMaggio in pretty much the same way regardless of position and statistics.

As a Yankee fan since birth, my opinion is that he probably is not the greatest shortstop ever...I have seen, from historians of the game, that Honus Wagner was rated the greatest shortstop of all time....I think when Alex Rodriguez was playing ss, he was a better all around player then Jeter....I would put Jeter right behind these 2 of who I think is the best....

I have seen Oberman's (sp?) rant & he has some good points, however with some ballplayers, the stats are not the only thing that is important....Some players bring something extra to a team that are not in the stats....Jeter seems to be one of those players....

I once read an article about Ted Williams....He was asked to give his opinion about the Yamkees of the 1950's because they always seemed to beat his team....He said that the most valuable ballplayer on those Yankee teams was Phil Rizzuto & not Mantle, Berra, Ford, etc....In Williams opinion Rizzuto brought something undefinable to his team

Fwiw....I wouldn't put Jeter in the top 5 Yankees of all time....

In 20 years he never got thrown out of a game or charged a mound. One of my personal favorites of all time because he is a throw back and truly loves and respects the game but NOT greatest of all time....PLEASE

This post must be a joke. Take a look at his stats and tell me they don't compare to other shortstops. He's so much better it's laughable.

Wagner wasn't a full time shortstop. Jeter's postseason numbers destroy his. On top of that, Wagner never had to play with anywhere near the same pressures Jeter did.

Where it is real F ing COLD
He was so damn good, a great career, he's close to the best just because of intangibles but maybe those other guys before my time had them too. Jeter was so clutch in the post season and came up nicely with a lot of good young talent.

I will say this about Jeter, he was lucky to play for an organization like the Yankees. In this day and age of baseball they had the money and the TV ratings where they would never get rid of him or even think of trading him, not just because of his play but because of his marketability and not just that but he meant so much to the club. If he played for like the As, Twins or Royals he would have been shipped around. Also he was fortunate (not his fault) to play for an organization who would just go and get who they needed to compete and win championships.

I did take a look at his stats. Here is a good link: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_SS.shtml

Jeter ranks right there alongside Alan Trammel, someone who isn't even in the Hall of Fame.

So you cherry pick your stats? I see A-Rod is second on that list. I guess you think he's better than Jeter too then, right?

Here's some stats for you...

Name another shortstop that ever played that has...

3450+ hits

1000+ multi hit games

11 seasons in which he batted .300+ and finished in double digit home runs and steals. Guess how many other players in the HISTORY of baseball could say the same? ZERO.

200 postseason hits.

The list goes on and on.

Derek Jeter, the greatest shortstop ever.

Seems you're cherry picking too.

Don't know how you can possibly put Jeter ahead of Ripken either.
