Iraq war amputee denied photo-op with Bush. ??Are you telling me that I can?t go to the ceremony ?cause I?m an amputee??? asked David Thomas, an Iraq war veteran who was awarded a Purple Heart. Thomas was told he could not wear shorts to attend a ceremony with President Bush because the media would be there, and shorts were not advisable because the amputees would be seated in the front row. David responded, ?I?m not ashamed of what I did, and y?all shouldn?t be neither.? When the guest list came out for the ceremony, his name was not on it. Talk about bringing shame to your country. This administration is a total and complete slap in the face to all real Americans.

My service earned me a dandy scar from my shoulder to middle back, but that doesn't mean that I demand to be photographed TOPLESS. C'mon fellas, it's called proper attire, your making yourselves look silly. :142smilie

well it's quite a different scenario. shorts are considered normal attire, by all accounts - as opposed to guys being topless, which is not normal photo attire. really not a good comparison.

sometimes people that are paralyzed, or amputees suffer incredible pain in their limbs, (or even if they are no longer there). This is hard to explain, but I know for a fact it exists, its often referred to as phantom pains, I know its true, because I have experienced it. Frankly few things if anything are as painful. I've had knee surgery on both knees, and fractured my right in 5 places, and the pain was nothing compared to these phantom pains. I have no knowledge whatsoever if this is why the amputee soldier was wearing shorts, but it would be a distinct possibility. People with these pains often can not even stand fabric of clothing rubbing, or even wind blowing against their injury. Not sure if this is the case, but it would be a reason why he would only wear shorts.

Correct me if i am wrong here, but don't pants cover your legs, as for wearing shorts, that could be interpreted as pants in this situation,

And the real problem is safety, if in fact he did show up in "pants" they might take him down, because that is were he could hide WMDs. Or maybe the truth.

But hey if the media is going to be there, then all bets off. We do need a good image.

DISGUSTING. And i am proud to be American. (Well not really).

you'd think the prez would be willing to make an exception. THAT is called respect. It's too bad you can't see that, AR.

please dont compare me at a wedding to an amputee vet dealing with god knows at a photo opp. silly, just silly.

Al, I have no idea if this is the case at all. But I do know guys personally, that are tough bastards, that don't wear anything but shorts or very loose hospital pants for a very extended time after their injury, either that or their very extensively on medication.

Yeah, we really respected him. In my opinion, we should have just as much respect for those risking their lives for our country.

"Perks and stardom do not come to every amputee. Sgt. David Thomas, a gunner with the Tennessee National Guard, spent his first three months at Walter Reed with no decent clothes; medics in Samarra had cut off his uniform. Heavily drugged, missing one leg and suffering from traumatic brain injury, David, 42, was finally told by a physical therapist to go to the Red Cross office, where he was given a T-shirt and sweat pants. He was awarded a Purple Heart but had no underwear."

Wearing shorts to meet and be on the stage with the f'ing President is proper attire now? What is this country coming to? Why not just show up in a half shirt, flip flops and a banana hammock? This article is complete spin and contrived controversy. So, according to this blurb the same people who are inviting amputees to this function AND seating them in the FRONT row with the President is being blasted for being ashamed of amputees because one refuses to wear proper attire?

There are so many legitimate things to criticize this government about with out BS like this.

Any amputee I have ever seen, and I know several, essentially wears shorts anyway, the pants are cut & hemmed, no amputee I ever saw wears pants with just the empty leg of the pants hanging. This seems like lot over nothing.

Sorry one more rant,

I would bet he was wearing pants when he lost his legs, and in "proper" attire, defending an order to be there. And no not defending our freedom, or fighting for it. Simply following orders. that's it.

So when given an "order" to wear pants to this event. Well i believe he has earned the right to disregard this one.

If he shows up in a jock strap , then i believe he has earned the right. And i do mean earned. Who are we or anyone to tell him at this point what is proper or not.

I REALLY WONDER this: if said soldier above lost a eye, instead of his leg I honestly wonder if they would have found wearing sunglasses disrespectful??
