I think MJ played against much better competition. This league sucks ass now.

Its tough to say, but I think he's pretty close. Yeah, Jordan probably played against better competition at the top, but there were some really bad teams in those days too.
So maybe it is and will always be apples/oranges. Kobe has probably faced a lot more athleticism and done it night in and night out, but like you say, the top teams back then were better.
I definitely put them in the same breath. Jordan is the best but Kobe is right there.
