do not smoke, new to many people that it killed. of coarse a few, two lived in their 90s and would smoke like a chimney.
a good friends dad would smoke a pack and a half, he had one bad heart attack. anyways he tried and could not kick the habit, after abusing his body for 58 years he finally quit. he died shortly after.

juice and water, but it is important to excercise, I try to find time to workout at least 3 times a week for just under 2 hours. a good hard workout helps out. also playing a sport like hockey or broomball can also help, play in two rec leagues not to competitive (unless a team beats you and gloats, like saying "we should have beaten them 3 more goals", then its war.

)

try to set goals, mine was to run 10 miles, I am not a runner but did it in a good time finally.

cutting cold turkey is probably to difficult so just cut back. and try to reduce the amount slowly.

I eat a lot of crap and should increase the fruits and vegetables and get a better diet, however working out helps. there was a study claiming how good it is for you.

thanks

bear,

Read about your makeover and I'd like to let you know what I did. I have never smoked in my life, just never got into it. But I sure can eat and have been on every weight loss program there is. Lifetime member at Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, weight watchers, lyndora, all of them. I have probably yo-yo'd over 2000 lbs in my life, very unhealthy.

Last August, 1 year ago now I found a book called Body for life in a Barns & Noble bookstore and it changed my life. I bring this up because you mentioned wanting to exercise 30 min or so a day etc.

Well, this program is a weight training program with a diet, everything. It comes with pictures of before and after and when you see them you will think this is a scam, BUT IT WORKS, I DID IT.

You work out 3 days a week with weights no more than 45 min in the gym. Then 3 days of cardio work of just 20 min per day and on Sun you rest and eat what you want.

Beleive me when I tell you in 12 weeks I went from 271lbs to 225 and I had a body that started looking like a body builder, not real bulging muscles, but a v shape definition in my chest Nice biceps, enough said. I'm very happy and I have continued but not as religious as the 12 week program and I now have a 36 inch waist 1st time since high school and I look and feel great.

For anyone that hates exercise but wants the benefits it affords this is the program for you. You DO NOT have to spend hours in the gym and take hour long aerobic classes, this works guys and I'm living proof.

The program and book is called Body for Life by Bill Phillips.

Hope this inspires some of you. And after reading this thread I'm going to start another 12 program on Mon and go along with you, bear.

IT WORKS IT WORKS IT WORKS

PS Jack you have a family, man get off your ass and get started and put down the cancer sticks, get some guts and give it a try. You can do it believe me. If I started working out the way I looked in a gym in front of people anyone can conquer their addictions, no matter if it is cigs, booze, or food.

If any of you smokers have family or anyone who cares about you, you have no idea how much you are torchering them. No, i'm not talking about second hand smoke, I'm talking about how your love ones know that it's a great chance you will die from lung disease EACH and EVERY time you light a cigarrette, because it adds up everytime....it's like you stab them in there hearts every time you light one. Well, I guess your smoking addiction is bigger than how your love one's feel huh!?!?! Not criticizing anyone, just something you all should think about.

Have never been a smoker so can't begin to understand the addiction - so it would be patronising of me to give advice.

I do know that if I was addicted to soemthing that has a decent chance of killing me I would do my utmost to find the best way of giving it up.

So GL to all those who are trying to - I think the effort can only be worthwhile in the end.

Bear - if you're including exercise, healthy eating etc in this programme, then I think you will find each gradual improvement you make will really spur you on to keep going - you will create your own buzz.

Best of luck guys; we're rooting for ya

bear yes you have to drink the wholw qt,its kind of different, the first goes down ok the 2nd half gets tuff to choke down i drink it as fast as i can then chase it with a glass of cold water, then each time you go drink another glass it will last about 2 hours once you start it is about every 10-15 mins after that, but you feel really good.
i know it sounds sick to talk about this but its great for your whole digestive track and colin because it is a total internal cleaning.
and like anything else just remember one day at a time it works,as simple as it sounds it works just say to day i willnot smoke,if i want one it will be the next day, then when the next day comes just say today i will go smoke free.
and if you do slip don't beat yourself up this is the main reason people fail because they are to hard on themself, there has only been 1 perfect person and its none of use.
if you belive in a higher power, ask it first thing in the morning to help you through the day and if you get to where you think you want a smoke, step back and ask your higher power for the strength to move on,you only need to break the cycle of thought, because this leads to the action. if you disturbe that thought you should be able to side track the action. take it slow and enjoy this and have fun with it,look at it as working towards a goal, step by step.just like the movie what about bob, think baby steps and you will be happy and healthy in no-time.
good luck to all that do this i will have you in my thoughts each night and morning,i said do, not try, there is no room for the word try because that leads to failure,if you do then you will succeed at some point.

my wife quit. it took her 5 attempts but she finally succeeded.
cheating was the worse thing for her. cheating it and thinking she is beating it. she got on the patch (or the patch got on her) and she stopped cheating. the doctors really beat that into your head - that you can't do both - patch and smoke.

as fletcher said, you have to beat the brain. that's the tough part. a diet that helps to not trigger dopamine activity in the brain is key.

http://my.webmd.com/content/dmk/dmk_article_40081

you might want to stay away from alcohol and caffeine for awhile. they tend to trigger addictive response mechanisms.

here is a nice blender recipe. great way to start any and every day.

1.) 1/4 container of tofu(not the firm stuff)
2.) 1/4 pint of strawberries(off season use the frozen ones they are cheaper)
3.) we buy frozen blue berries and use about 3-4 spoonfuls
4.) 1-1.5 bananas
5.) yogurt 1 small container
6.) pineapple juice approximately 1 glass fresh pineapple is also nice
8. fresh mangoes in season only

The tofu is for your protein, pineapple is great for digestion, Mangoes have the highest source of Vitamin C. Strawberries are great for the prostate, blueberries are for for fighting cancer(antioxidants), and bananas are a great source of potassium.

When we make this we always make enough for two(fills a blender). You can cut our quantities in half (you may have to experiment a little!).

good luck bear.
i'm sure this will be one of the toughest fights of your life but the rewards will definately be worth it.

......one day at a time....this is more like 15 minutes at a time.......I better go put on some Rocky music. Great suggestions and support! Thanks!

Bear, just remember that your brother's new addiction isn't causing harm to his system. The drug NICOTINE is harmless to your sustem, and you could chew a hundred pieces a day and live to be a very old man. The only ill effect I've seen in chewing the gum is elevated blood pressure. Other than that, it's as harmless as chewing a stick of juicy fruit. At one time, you had to have a DR's Rx, but as I'm sure you know, it's classified as an OTC..

GOOD LUCK and if there is anything I can do to assist you, let me know...

Neemer,
You're absolutely right and I'm gonna jump on those patches, inhaler or gum if I need to ....but I'm a stubborn bastard some times and I'm just gonna cold turkey this thing. This has been a very long day...but I,m still 100% go on this. Worked my ass off out in the sun and heat to keep my mind occupied and will probably go to bed early to get this day done. Thanks for the advice and support. I"M SMOKE FREE FOLKS>>>>>YEAH! SMOKE FREE>> have a great night all!

Bluegrass!
If I remember correctly, it takes about 7 days for your system to totally detoxify. AS Fletcher has pointed out, you can speed up this process with supplements.

remember ... life is like a loaf of bread ... there are only so many slices. it's the way we eat our way through it that determines how long the loaf will last.

this is a very useful and powerful thread you have started here Bear. Kudo's to you for what you're doing for yourself and for the inspiration to others.
