While ago there was a thread about renting DVD's from Blockbuster/netflix. In that thread there was talk about copying DVD's. ScreaminPain and taylor99ss mentioned it. I am interested in purchasing one. I would like to rent DVD's from Blockbuster and copy them onto blank DVD's. I e-mailed the dudes selling them on e-bay and they said for legal reasons they can't comment on it. They also said it wouldn't copy CopyRight Protected DVD, ex: Hollywood Movies DVD. Are they just saying this for legal reason or is it the truth?

I see these DVD DUPLICATORS on e-bay for around $300. I am interested in it but only want to buy it if it will copy rented DVD's from Blockbuster.

If any of you do this, what is your advice? What do I need to do? I am hoping you just buy the machine, put in dvd, put in blank dvd, click record, done! Is that how it works? Thanks!

You can do it with one of those machines or on a computer. Never done it, but I have had a few friends that have done it and the copies they make are poor. I looked into it once too and figured it was not worth my time. JMHO.

I agree with you I wouldn't want to do it if the copies are poor. But if people on here do it and their copies are good quality, then its worth it. Especially if the machine is only $300. I am not into buying movies. But it be cool to have a collection if it only costs me $1-$2 a movie instead of paying $15-$20 a movie. Plus copying movies would make good gifts for friends and family. I know the 2 posters I mentioned do it so I am hoping they read this thread. They seemed happy with it.

Scott get my email from Jack and I can help you out and hopefully answer most of your questions.

Thanks! I e-mailed you the same info.

Here are 2 that I am looking at. Now if I want more "targets" that means price gets closer to around $300. I assume more targets mean I can copy more DVD's at once. Any opinions on these 2 machines I am looking at? Thanks. I have no idea what any of this stuff means. But I am capable of putting in a DVD, putting in a blank DVD, and clicking record! :lol2

I have been making my own movies for some time now. First, I highly suggest Netflix over Blockbuster for selection and availability (BB still doesn't have Seinfeld seasons 5-6). As far as copying the movies, I use DvdShrink 3.0 Beta 5. Just do a google search for it--it's free. It compresses the movie files (if necessary) so that you can burn it on a single-layer dvd. It has never failed to produce a pleasing result. All you need is a regular dvd burner. You can also get my email from Jack if you need more help.

dvd shrink 3.2 beta for conversion, intervideo for copying to disc. you can down load these for free from download.com or bearshare. you will need to download the key for intervideo. no problems.

I just have a simple DVD recorder with a pretty decent DVD player RCA'd into each other with really good cables. If the DVD is copyright protected I just unplug the video cable for the first 7-15 seconds of recording, usually the movie production ads at the beginning of the movie. Then PLug the video cable back in. It causes the blip in the first 15 secs or so but its worth it to make it easy. The only time the quality is less than gratifying is when I record 4 movies onto one DVD-R. One per disc and the quality is great.

Disclaimer: I only copy copyrighted DVD's that I own for a backup purpose. Never distributed or shown. I repeat they basically dont exist. In fact, forget what I said all together, and I am not the person who is linked to this username.

I have a CD burner built in that I use to burn music cd's. Is that the same as DVD burner? What exactly would I need to do exactly what you do. What is that program you mentioned I should download? I thought you didn't need any programs when copying a DVD? Thanks in advance.

you need a dvd burner if you want higher quality movies, if you burn to a cd you will probably need 2 or more cd's. with a dvd burner you can burn converted movies up to about 4.65 gig.

No, you are going to need to buy a recordable dvd drive (dvd burner). I would highly recommend an internal drive over an external one. You would need to take the side panel off your pc, disconnect and remove your cd burner, and install the dvd burner in its place. It's not as hard as you probably think so don't get discouraged about that. To give you an idea, go to bestbuy.com and look in computers for recordable dvd drives. I would then go to epinions.com and see what others have to say about which one to buy. My NEC burner has lasted for 1.5 years so I am not up-to-date on the lastest drives. Looking over at bestbuy though, it seems all the new drives are dual-layer burners. This means you can store over 8gb on one dvd. However, blank dual-layer dvds are more expensive than single layer discs which hold 4.4gb. I always buy Fuji single-layer dvd-r discs at bestbuy when they are on sale (which is about once a month). When on sale, you can get a pack of 50 for $14.99-19.99.

As far as software, you can just drag the video files from your dvd burner to your hard drive. However, most movies are larger in size than what you have available to use on your 4.4gb disc. This is where DVDShrink comes in. It will compress the movie files so that they all fit on one single-layer dvd at 4.4gb. I have burned movies that have been compressed as much as 45% and still have great results. You don't have to copy the entire dvd either. You can skip the menus and bonus features and just shrink the movie itself which will give you even better video quality. I do recommend the version 3.0 Beta 5 as it is always reliable and without any kinks.

You can download DVDShrink here:
www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/dvdshrinkold/

You can find detailed instructions on how to use it here:
www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php

Hope this helps some...any other questions, shoot...

I think Munson pretty much detailed the process. Buy a good DVD burner (I recommend PLEXTOR, around $100), install it on your computer and you'll be making copies in no time. I also use DVDshrink software, it allows you to edit out the previews of coming attractions, and other excess promotional crap and get right to the movie. You can even edit out the credits if you want. Each copy is identical to the original, so don't worry about quality. You can even select 2-channel, 4-channel or surround sound.

It is important to have enough hard drive space on your computer and sufficient RAM. Each movie could take around 10 gigs until compressed. Tt's easy installing (or switching) the recorder in your computer, but if you don't feel comfortable, it is a minor job for any computer shop.

Using NetFlix or Blockbuster is the fastest way to create a library. They will send 3 movies at a time. You can copy a movie in about 40 min. I would send the movies back the same day I received them in most cases, then they will send 3 more from your que. It's likely you will get about 40 movies in a month with this scenario. The only lag time is mailing. Blockbuster is sent from Burbank, so your lag time is minimal (usually overnight)

I've never used a stand-alone copier, but I'm uncertain why you would want one, unless you didn't own a computer.

I'm curious about copying from my TIVO as Jack described. I've never hooked my computer up to the TIVO, but it sounds like somthing I'd like to do, if I could then download and burn copies.. :)
