It's the big splash at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas now. ?The first misconception is that this is your grandfather?s 3-D. It?s not ?Jaws? 3-D, it?s ?Avatar? 3-D,? sez an executive at BSkyB.

You will have to wear those 3-D glasses initially, but eventually won't need them. The 3-D TV sets will also play standard HDTV.

Panasonic sez they will have a 3-D camcorder this year costing about $2,000.

From the Louisville Courier-Journal:

3-D TV is the talk of CES

Sets will arrive this summer

If you chose the 3-D version of ?Avatar? in the theater ? and most people did ? consumer electronics manufacturers are hoping you'll also choose 3-D for your living room.

3-D TV is the hottest topic at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which wraps up Sunday. Most of the major TV makers announced plans to sell new (and more expensive) TV and DVD players so you can watch the 3-D movies, cartoons, concerts and sports events that will start arriving this summer.

?I believe this year will be the beginning of 3-D,? said Woo Paik, chief technology officer for LG Electronics. He said LG will begin selling 3-D-capable TVs in larger sizes this year, along with high-definition DVD players that deliver 3-D from Blu-ray discs.

Samsung and Toshiba each introduced new flat-panel sets that show 3-D images from broadcast or DVD sources. And both said their new TVs will have high-powered processors that can add a third dimension to standard two-dimensional movies, broadcasts and video games.

Toshiba executives said their new TV line, called Cell, uses a computer chip that can analyze the 2D content, estimate the depth of the digital images and present them as 3-D.

Samsung promised ?a complete ecosystem? of 3-D products including TVs, Blu-ray DVD players, home theater audio systems and, of course, the required 3-D glasses.

Few of the companies announced prices for their new 3-D set, but they are certain to be higher than current prices for 37- to 52-inch sizes.

Several celebrities added some show biz sizzle to the 3-D announcements. Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg appeared at the Samsung press conference to remind the audience that his studio now makes all of its animated features in 3-D. A 3-D version of ?Monsters vs. Aliens? will be out on Blu-ray this spring. Both Disney and Dreamworks have produced 3-D animated features for theaters, and both studios say they will do more 3-D for home video.

Singer Taylor Swift helped Sony introduce its 3-D gear, and ?Avatar? producer Jon Landau spoke at the Panasonic event. ?3-D isn't about gags coming off the screen,? he said. ?It's about entering new worlds.?

And, where will those new worlds come from?

DirectTV has said it will begin delivering 3-D content this summer. Subscribers who have DirecTV's high-definition receivers will be offered an upgrade to make them 3-D capable.

Fox said it will broadcast this year's Major League Baseball All-Star game in 3-D. And ESPN will kick off a new 3-D sports network with a June 11 broadcast of a World Cup soccer match.

Later, the network will show NBA games, college basketball and football games, and the Summer X Games in 3-D.

And the ?killer app? for 3-D ? a high-definition, three-dimensional release of ?Avatar? for home video ? is likely to be available in time for Christmas.

wiki reports:

OLEDs have a significant advantage over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs). OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Thus, they can display deep black levels, draw far less power, and can be much thinner and lighter than an LCD panel. OLED displays also naturally achieve much higher contrast ratio than LCD screens using cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlights.

Not exactly.

I still have a great time enjoying games on a 27" regular old tv.

I'm happy watching games on this 22" HD that's on my desk. Fucka big screen TV, at least for me.
