yyz is right - the no hat no shades thing holds true at most banks. Maybe not the corner mom and pop local community bank. But any large bank, that's the standard. I'd bet, there's probably a sign posted up somewhere about it but it just wasn't visible from the entrance you went in to.

Interesting, most large banks in my area have a bit too much foot traffic to police this. I always have my ball cap on and can't remember ever being told to remove it. Maybe it's the sunglasses (which I don't wear) that clinches it?
