I've had this old dusty calculator since the 80's and I've never replaced the battery.

The few rare times that I've wondered why the battery never went dead is because of that little window you see on there. I always thought it was a device for light to keep the battery charged. Is that possible?

Anyway, the damn thing died and I didn't have a triple A so almost threw it away but didn't. I put a battery in there just now and it's working normally again.

Why did it go all those years without needing a new battery?

I'm not a scientist, nor do I play one on TV but my guess would be that it's a solar-powered calculator (i.e. the calculator runs directly off it - it doesn't charge the battery) and the battery is there as supplemental power in case there is not enough light where you are trying to use it. So it's certainly possible that the battery was barely getting tapped into all those years.

What's probably more of a surprise though is that old batteries have a nasty habit of corroding and, eventually, destroying all the contact points in the battery housing. Then you've got yourself a nice paperweight.
