NFL likely to punish Kennedy for hit on Chambers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

DENVER -- Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chris Chambers had to be helped from the field Sunday night after taking a vicious hit to the head from Denver safety Kenoy Kennedy in the second quarter.

The initial diagnosis was that he had sustained a concussion. Chambers did not return to the game.

A high-ranking league source told ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli late Sunday night that Kennedy "certainly" faces substantial sanctions for his hit on Chambers.

Chambers went up for a high pass from Jay Fiedler and appeared to have caught it until he was hit in mid-air by Kennedy, and the ball came free.

Officials issued a personal-foul penalty against Kennedy for the helmet-to-helmit hit.

Chambers lay motionless on the field for several seconds.

Kennedy appeared to try to apologize to Chambers as the receiver left the field, but he was pushed away by Dolphins tight end Randy McMichael.

A third-year veteran, Kennedy was cited twice earlier this season for plays that went beyond the scope of normal contact, including a $10,000 fine last week for a helmet-to-helmet hit on San Diego fullback Fred McCrary in last week's victory over the Chargers.

The league source termed the hit "blatant" and "a textbook example" of illegal helmet-to-helmet contact. He also noted the two earlier fines that Kennedy had drawn through the first five weeks of the 2002 campaign. "I think it's fair to say there's a pattern here," he said.

Kennedy, 24, was fined $7,500 last month for a hit on St. Louis Rams wide receiver Isaac Bruce in the season opener. In a letter sent to Kennedy last week, league officials apprised the safety that further incidents could result in his suspension.

Information from ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli and The Associated Press was used in this report.

I agree with Kennedy,,hope they fine him AND suspend him.
There was another one on the other side in the first half when McAffery was hit H to H, but he got up, so,,no call.
I guess you can hit H to H but no too hard,,or if they don't get up.

Hey daboyz --

This is tackle football. Diving into a guy helmet first is not tackling -- it's spearing.

Should the defense be allowed to face-mask, too?

This guy is leading with his helmet. Ask troy aikman if he wishes the NFL were tougher on leading with the helmet. You might not have had to watch Quincey Carter lead your team the last two years.

A good bone-crunching hit is the best thing in football. No one thinks Mo Lewis was dirty last year when he severed Drew Bledsoe's artery. That was a good hit.

But going low on a guy when engaged, hitting a guy in the back, tripping, face-masking, punching, and leading with your helmet injure people.

No one wants to make football soft but people want to see the players play every week. If they allowed spearing, you'd have high school kids on the field by the end of the season because everyone would be injured.

Do you see the hit last night? How can you think that should be allowed?

As for Vick -- didn't a guy go after his knees? Vick is one of the most exciting players to hit the NFL in years, and you think people should be able to go after his knees? Shit, I could end a guy's career if I dove into his knees, and I'm about 170.

i agree with what ur saying .......but last time i checkef that was one of the downfalls of playing in the NFL......

sometimes i think people make to much of some hits......if it was sam madison that hit a denver wr do u think the Dolphin fans would he whinning so much ??? i think not.......

when some defendrs go to knock the hell out of some guy they dont try to nail him in the head...but circumstances happen like right before hitting the guy something happens to where there bodies go in different directions and the defender as already left his feet and cant do anyhting about it now........

and if a defender leads with his head and "spears" arent the chances of him being paraylzed just as good?????

im not saying there arent guys out there that try to hurt the other team on purpose...just ask the Eagles about that......but i just think sometimes people make to much of a big deal about it...kinda like the LOCK word in handicapping !!!!!

your comment shows your ignorance.

this as*hole has been fined 2 times already this season.

so lets understand this 3 weeks out of 6 this as*hole has

speared a player. ARE YOU FOR REAL ?

thats 50% of his games this year ! He was fined 7500 and 10K

well now his as* should be suspended. In defense of your Sam

Madison comment. He has been in this league for 6 years and

has NEVER been fined for a HELMET to HELMET you want to know

why ? He has more class and repsect for the players in the NFL.

Your just ignorant. Too bad that was not you taking the hit last

night !

I like the big hits, but not the cheapshots like last night.
I like it when one guy is squarely going against another and it's POW! You can hear the pads and both are hearing buzzing.
But, I have never understood the hits from D-backs against receivers that are looking for the ball while the guy unloads. To me, the is a cheapshot and there's nothing mocho about it,,at all!

Highroller,

If ur looking for a war of words u wont find it with me.......however u just made my point about this forum it never fails.......

i come on here and give another perspective but of course im wrong and u have to start bashing me.....last time i checked opinions werent facts.......

like always prayen said ....when ur on the football field especially in the nfl the game is so fast i dont think he said to himself well lets see hes coming across the middle how can i hit him in the head....come on get real...he went to knock the hell out of him and he did it......

ur comment about madison........uve got to be kidding me right.....i think u used class and respect....obviously being a dolphin fan has blurred ur vision....lol.......

anyway like i said im not looking for a war of words .....like this forum always seems to be ....the dolphins are once again starting off great.....but we all know where this road has led before.....i just hope they can keep it going and not start to take a dive like every yr before......i also think ray lucas is a much better qb than fielder !!!!!!

good luck with the dolphins !!!!!
