Falcons near deal to trade Schaub
Backup QB would go to Texans

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 03/21/07

In potentially the biggest move of the Falcons' offseason, backup quarterback Matt Schaub could be traded to Houston an exchange of first-round picks this season and two second-round picks, according to an NFL official with knowledge of the situation.

Houston and Atlanta were in deep discussions about a trade Wednesday, but a deal can not be finalized until Schaub, a restricted free agent, reaches an agreement on a new contract with Houston. The agreement is expected to be reached Thursday according to the official.

In the deal, the Falcons would move up two spots to No. 8 in the first round of April's NFL draft and receive Houston's second-round draft pick in each of the next two seasons. That would give Atlanta three of the top 44 selections (8th, 39th and 44th) in this season's draft to address several key areas. The Texans would move back two spaces in the draft to No. 10.

A trade of Schaub would free up $2.3 million in salary-cap space, which was occupied by the one-year free-agent tender the Falcons extended Schaub to retain his rights.

"Matt is a restricted free agent and he is entitled to visit any team and do what he may want to do," Falcons president and general manager Rich McKay responded to a question from the Journal-Constitution on a national conference call intended to discuss the agenda for next week's NFL owners meetings in Phoenix. "We've talked to a number of teams who have interest in Matt. Beyond that, that's about all I'm going to say."

Schuab and Joby Branion, who represents Schaub, could not be reached for comment.

Having several high selections in the draft could enable Atlanta to move up further in the draft or slide down and acquire more selections. However, with needs at nearly every position on defense, running back and the offensive line, the Falcons could stick with their current allotment, especially since they pick in the top half of all seven rounds.

Schaub, a third-round pick in 2004, started just two games in his three seasons with the Falcons, losing both. However, his performances in relief of starter Michael Vick and showings in preseason made Schaub a coveted player. The Falcons rebuffed trade inquiries about Schaub last season, with team owner Arthur Blank making it clear that he wanted an adequate backup should Vick get injured.

Schaub would have become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season and was free to sign with another team without the Falcons receiving compensation.

If Schaub is dealt, second-year Georgia product D.J. Shockley would move into the role as Vick's backup, although the Falcons likely would acquire a veteran backup with game experience.

Ironically, Houston starting quarterback David Carr could soon be available, since the acquisition of Schaub seemingly ends his tenure there after being the expansion franchise's first overall pick in 2002. Other free agent quarterbacks with extended NFL experience include Drew Bledsoe, Aaron Brooks, Jay Fiedler, Joey Harrington and Anthony Wright.
...........................................................

Hard to believe the Falcons are this stupid. They were asking for a #1 and #3 pick .

How does that turn into moving up two positions.

Geez Louise. They will probably take that same Safety they were going to take at #10.

So Houston gets Schaub and the #10 pick.
Falcons get #8 and two second rounders.

It seems so stupid.

And then the Falcons still have Tote smoking Vick who will go down with injuries anytime the Falcons get behind and he dont feel like playing.

Who then comes in ? Joey Harrington ?

Maybe it wont go through. I got my fingers crossed.

the rat bastids.

maybe oak will pu carr. much better than a rookie qb - then we could trade that #1 to ATL for 2 of their lower picks and they can draft GT WR.

I am embarrased to be a Texan fan after hearing this news?

This guy has barely played and they are filling a void where they could have got VYoung Last year.

THey still have sh!tty o-line and this guy won't succeed in houston.

Here is the deal with the trade people outside of Houston dont know.
Carr was gone this offseason no matter what.
When they couldn't get Jeff Garcia, it became obvious they would draft someone in the 1st or 2nd round anyway this year.
When you look at it that way, they gave Atl a 2nd round pick next year and went from 8 to 10 this year.
Instead of taking a 2nd round QB and waiting 3 years for him to develop, they got a QB that is NFL READY now.
They are on the hook for 3 yrs/20M with Schaub.
Rumors are that they will get a 4th rounder for Carr.
I think this trades makes since for both teams.

I guess we will have to wait until the draft to see who got the better deal.

I really hate to see Schaub go and the Falcons did it just as much to keep the peace as anything else.

If the Falcons were to take Quinn at #8 I would have to laugh my ass off.

Seems like they will take Landry though the same guy they had targeted at 10.

What pisses me off is that the Falcons lowered their standards as they were asking for a #1 pick for Schaub.

But 3 picks in the top 44 could go along way in plugging the many holes the Falcons have.

I hope they dont take Adrian Peterson though. I think he will not be the same since the ACL.

Schaub will do very well given the chance to play.
The guy can pass the ball and has above average command of the huddle. The guys like to play with him. Unlike with Vick who they never know what or where he is going to be.

Funny you should say that because all rumors are the Texans are eyeing OT Levi Brown at #8 and say he will still be on the board at #10. If he is gone then rumors are that they would trade down to get that pick back and look at a WR.

8. Falcons S Laron Landry 6?1 213 4.35 LSU

One of the top 5 players in this year?s draft, but he falls due to the position he plays. He will start instantly for the Falcons

9. Dolphins T Levi Brown 6?6 323 5.39 Penn St.

Levi Brown and Vernon Carey sound like a great duo. They could protect whoever the Dolphins? QB is this year. Brown should compete with L.J. Shelton and Anthony Alabi this year.

10. Texans DT Amobe Okoye 6?2 302 4.97 Louisville

A player that has shot up draft boards. Travis Johnson has been a bust and the rest of the decent DT?s are well into their thirties. Okoye is very young and will only continue to get better and stronger.

Already this week, the Falcons traded Schaub to the Houston Texas, and Thursday night signed ex-Ravens QB Chris Redman to a one-year deal, according to Redman's agent, Joby Branian. Terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed.

Redman, who did not play in the NFL last season, played for Falcons coach Bobby Petrino for one season at the University of Louisville, when Petrino was the head coach.

Second-year Georgia product D.J. Shockley is the in-house candidate to take over as Michael Vick's backup.

Overheard in Falcons HQ's last week

McKay - Well we either got to trade Vick or Schaub to get the players we will need for the future.

Blank - Yeh

McKay - Well no one will give us anything for Vick.

Looks like we trade Schaub.

Petrino - Yeh

This could either go down as one of the most boneheaded moves by the Falcons franchise in history ,( like the Brett Favre ficasco, or it could turn into one of the best.

The people with the money dont really care much what the fans think. They are going to do what they have to , to make money.

Only thing is, alot very very right has to happen to pull this out and make the Falcons a better team.
If they dont take the right free agents and draft well, then its a mute point anyway.

Williams is still not starting from the last draft. That has to be ripping on his confidence.

Alot of needs to fill. The most important thing is to move in the right direction with few mistakes from here on out. Doubtfull if that will happen.

The Joe Horn signing is no where near what needed to be addressed at wide receiver. And the sad thing to say is that GT Johnson would not flourish with Vicks darts and inconsistencies.

Its almost like going into the season with the same receivers that stuggled so mightily in 2006.

Waiting for the draft early April. I really enjoy watching the NFL draft more than any other sports activity I watch. I follow each team and the first and second rounds, closely.

Alot of the college players I recognize from the NCAA season.

It helps to cap the upcoming season when you know who is getting who and watch the clips.

i hadn't read anything about houston's interest in garcia...i read that their main interest was in plummer.....

Nobody is gonna succeed there until they address that awful offensive line. Garcia showed us all in Detroit. Then he comes to philly with the best offensive line and suceeds

makes no sense giving up 2 2nd round picks when you are trying to build your team ASAP.

retarded front office.

i want to see how this shakes out before making a judgment.....

we may see houston trade their # 1 & trade down to try to make up for the loss of #2.

(March 22, 2007) -- Back when the Falcons first thought about trading Matt Schaub, they determined his value to be the middle of the first round. Atlanta believed the young quarterback was worth a mid-first-round pick, which happens to be a little over 1,000 points on the trade value chart.

Any combination of those points was going to be enough to pull the trigger on a trade. Anything less than that would probably mean Schaub staying in Atlanta as an insurance policy for Michael Vick.

A team slotted at 15 or 16 in the first round had the right compensation. A team in the top 10 could trade down with someone and then make a deal with Atlanta. But in the end, another creative way of arriving at the proper compensation was worked out between the two clubs.

Here's a look at the deal:

Atlanta's No. 10 pick is worth 1,300 points.
Houston's No. 8 pick is worth: 1,400 points.
The teams swap picks and it nets the Falcons 100 points.

The Falcons receive the Texans' 2007 second-round pick (No. 39) worth 510 points. Now the Falcons have 610 points.

The Falcons pick up the Texans' 2008 second-round pick. No one knows where that pick will wind up, so for now the only way to look at is the middle of the round. No. 48 is worth 420 points.

The Falcons acquire a total of 1,030 points on the trade value chart, splitting the difference between the value of Nos. 15 and 16 in the first round. The Falcons got what they were looking for and the Texans still have a top-10 pick in this draft and a first-round pick in the 2008 draft.
