<!-- /.mod.related-companies -->NEW YORK (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration will require two smoking-cessation drugs, Chantix and Zyban, to carry the agency's strongest safety warning over side effects including depression and suicidal thoughts.

The new requirement, called a "Black Box" warning, is based on reports of people experiencing unusual changes in behavior, becoming depressed, or having suicidal thoughts while taking the drugs.
The antidepressant Wellbutrin, which has the same active ingredient as GlaxoSmithKline PLC's Zyban, already carries such a warning.
The FDA is also requiring an additional study on Chantix and Zyban to determine the extent of the side effects. Pfizer Inc., which makes Chantix, said it is still discussing the potential study design with the FDA. The study could include patients with and without psychiatric conditions to determine the true incidence rate of psychological side effects, Pfizer officials said.
Pfizer had already updated its labeling following the beginning of an FDA investigation into the potential side effects in 2007. That investigation was sparked by reports of about 37 suicides and more than 400 of suicidal behavior in connection with the drug.
In February 2008, the FDA said the connection between Chantix and serious psychiatric problems was increasingly likely, though the company had already updated the label to reflect the potential side effects.
Despite the new, stricter warnings, the FDA said consumers and doctors still have to weigh the benefit versus the risks when taking the drug.
"The risk of serious adverse events while taking these products must be weighed against the significant health benefits of quitting smoking," said Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States and we know these products are effective aids in helping people quit."
Last fall, the FDA also began looking into scores of patient reports about blackouts and injuries while taking Chantix. The Federal Aviation Administration later banned use of Chantix by pilots and air traffic controllers. The drug's label also warns that patients may be too impaired to drive or operate heavy machinery.
Chantix was approved in 2006. Sales reached $846 million in 2008, a 4 percent drop from the prior year as concerns over side effects surfaced.
"The labeling update underscores the important role of health care providers in treating smokers attempting to quit and provides specific information about Chantix and instructions that physicians and patients should follow closely," said Dr. Briggs W. Morrison, senior vice president of the primary care development group at Pfizer.
Pfizer said it made the revised label warnings in agreement with the FDA and is immediately making the information available to health care providers and patients.
Shares of Pfizer fell 11 cents to $14.89 in afternoon trading, while shares of GlaxoSmithKline rose 79 cents to $36.13.

what do you mean a week left and last sunday was the last cig

you're supposed to quit after the first 7 days.

i quit for about 17 days and stopped after the side effects got too bad. the next day i was smoking again. 17 days without any desire and not one puff and the next day was like i never quit at all.

i wish you the best and hope you have it licked but don't kid yourself.

i'm gonna try the damn pill again and fight thru the side effects, because it worked for me. only this time i will not go back the next day.

good luck quitting the miserable habit.

my dad died with lung cancer and my mom was in the hospital last week with COPD and on oxygen 24/7 for the rest of her life now. and i still smoke

Don't like the sound of urge returning after 17 days off.

I should have read directions but this has been my method of madness.

Took em for week and couldn't tell any diff -urge to smoke the same. So kept cutting back while taking pill.
After 2 weeks was down from 2 packs a day to 1pack--next 2 weeks 1/2 pack a day.
2nd month
--1st 2 weeks limited to 4 cigs a day-2 in morning and one after each meal.
last 2 weeks no cigs--

Will keep you posted what happens after pills run out.

I was on Chantix and took the pills for about 2 months and didn't have one smoke. Stopped the pills cuz the dreams were killing me and didn't smoke for to months. Stress and Wife still smoking did me in and started right back where I left off. I don't know about the suicidal thoughts I was feeling great not smokin' felt better about myself not the other way. Will do it again as soon as I get out of my job which is all stress!!!:scared

Don't know how you can still smoke on the Chantix after I started the pill within days the cig's tasted like hell to me and after I would smoke one didn't feel any diff. so I just stopped the first week and knew it wouldn't make me feel any diff. then if I did smoke one.
GL to anyone wishing to quit it is hard. Even harder if someone in the house still smokes.

This is interesting--so far we have no 2 reactions alike--

Jack didn't smoke after starting--you didn't either and said they tasted bad as several others have said--I couldn't tell a bit of diff.

After Jack stops urges comes back--on you it doesn't--and don't know about me yet.

So far the dreams are the most common denominator.

I wonder if all RX's effect each differently--and wonder what part of effects are suggestive responses rather than physical-- similiar to hypnotism.

you still get joint pain? i had it severely. neck, shoulders, feet. i'm going to do it again just to easily get 3 smoke-free weeks under my belt but will be prepared to not start back when i quit taking that drug.

i had very vivid dreams but they didn't bother me. actually liked it

You don't need to quit drinking. You can't hide from them. I taped a brand new pack to the dash of my car just so I had to stare at the fuckers every day.

First 3 weeks were a breeze. The nicotine was hardest to kick weeks 3-10. That's when it totally goes out of your system, big-time withdrawals.

After that it was just the mental part of changing my routines. I caught myself deep in thought a couple days ago while driving, I was reaching through console for a cigarette! Been 5 years.

There is a program you can get, a toolbar for your CPU. It tells you how much money you have saved. It updates a couple times per day. Good motivation!

I bet you could find it online for free.

No joint pain here Jack--is effecting my concentration level. Took almost twice as long to cap golf this morning. I have generally 4 tables I'll refer to and and by the time I get to the 3rd I have forgot the data from the 1st and have to go back-- that never happen before.:mj16:
I got me an extra week supply from guy who quit and didn't need them anymore--so got 2 weeks worth on ) cigs now.
