Comparing the SS to the Confederates is a bet of a stretch. Even though the South's worship of Lee was absurd and he was wrong to rebel against the Union I wouldn't compare him to Himmler or Goering. Banning the flag outright is not something I am 100% convinced about but it should not in anyway be flown on govt buildings. How would you like it if the Latino mayor of San Antonio flew the Mexican flag at City Hall?

Also, don't forget about Andersonville. Sherman's march didn't result in citizens being rounded up and killed. Did they shoot a bunch a prisoners like Peiper did at Malmedy? Come on man.

You're correct. In fairness, I should have qualified those examples by saying there were atrocities committed by both sides. :0008

In regards to the camps, there was immense suffering that happened on both sides which increased greatly when prisoner exchanges were stopped by Grant. However, this was started due to the Confederates not honoring paroles and not treating black soldiers the same was white. Still curious as to what SS type tactics were employed. Seems to me Fort Pillow comes closer then anything that happened in Sherman's March. In fairness, both sides indulged in what amounted to guerilla warfare in Kansas.

The number of prisoners of war that died in captivity in the civil war from both sides is almost equal to the number of American soldier casualties in Vietnam. Many froze or starved to death.

SS soldiers being compared to confederate soldiers?

The Germans were/are a great patriotic people, and the average soldier fought hard and with passion for his country as did the average Confederate soldier. The SS was totally different and not a fair comparison. If you want to talk about atrocities and SS type tactics, check out Sherman's March through the South, Silas Gordon, and Camp Douglas.

I think the Confederate flag is often inflammatory, and it is especially so for people who are ignorant of history and just spout what they hear on television. I don't think it should be banned though because people have a right to do as they wish. "It's a free country" and that means you are free to make stupid decisions like flying a Confederate flag on your redneck truck. What I think is comical and such a double standard is that the people most fervently calling for bans of these flags on state buildings and wherever else are also some of the most staunch supporters of gay/transgender rights. If I am to be tolerant of what people feel and want to do (personally, I don't care even if I think it's ridiculous, so what?), then they have to provide reciprocity with things they don't believe in or find ridiculous too.

One of the biggest reasons I try not even errrrr "discussing" politics in places like this. The zealots(on both sides) have no middle ground. You are wrong and they are right, accept it and move on.
