Joe Flacco Is Misjudging the Enormity of the Lamar Jackson Situation

By: Henry McKenna | 13 hours ago

We?ve seen how this story plays out.:SIB

A team drafts a quarterback in the first round. The head coach explains the rookie won?t be the starter. Then that player ends up starting a few weeks later. Contrary to what the rookie says. Contrary to what the coaches and general manager say. Contrary to what the incumbent starter says.

Yet somehow Joe Flacco doesn?t seem to know what?s about to hit him. He thinks he can quiet the questions about Lamar Jackson.

But, Joe, they are not going to stop.

Jackson is a major story at the Baltimore Ravens? training camp after the team drafted Jackson 32nd overall as a succession plan for Flacco, who might be the most sneakily bad quarterback in the NFL. (The argument over whether he is ?elite? can only be made with fingers crossed and tongue in cheek.)

At training camp on Friday, Flacco insisted he?s going to put Jackson out of everyone?s minds by winning games in 2018. The questions about Jackson will stop when he starts to win games, Flacco reasoned.

Joe Flacco asked if he thinks he will get sick of having to answer Lamar Jackson questions every week: "No. I don't, because I think we're going to win and we're not going to hear about it."

He shouldn?t be so sure.

Flacco could certainly pull an Alex Smith or a Matt Hasselbeck. Smith had Patrick Mahomes, a developmental talent, nipping at his heels in 2017, but managed to hold the starting job amid some in-season rumblings for Mahomes. Jake Locker, a 2012 eighth-overall pick, failed to take the starting role in his rookie season. He couldn?t get past Hasselbeck, who finished that season with a Flacco-esque 3,571 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and a litany of injuries.

So the rumblings will always be there, as long as Jackson is healthy. Worse still, Jackson won?t be out of sight or out of mind. The Ravens intend to get Jackson, an outrageously good athlete, on the field in tailored-to-Jackson packages, even if he?s not the starting quarterback. The mere sight of him should beg the question of whether he should be on the field more often.

Questions from the media shouldn?t concern Flacco. He?s got bigger problems.

Mahomes and Locker were exceptions to the rule. Historically, first-round quarterbacks start in their first year. They are the only two of the last 17 first-round quarterbacks who failed to start in his rookie year. Over the last five years, it?s only been Mahomes in 2017 and Locker in 2012.

Deshaun Watson and Mitch Trubisky started in their first year. Jared Goff, who looked like a baby deer trying to walk in his rookie year, got past Case Keenum. Carson Wentz got past Sam Bradford. The list goes on: Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden. Yes, Weeden, who threw four interceptions in his debut for the Cleveland Browns.

Should I go on?

Let?s finish it off: E.J. Manuel, Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert. That gets us to Locker. Even in the cases of Mahomes and Locker, they got the job for Week 1 of their sophomore season. (Mahomes is slated to start after the Chiefs traded Smith this offseason.)

Few incumbent quarterbacks have been as solid as Flacco in terms of competency. Flacco, after all, can hang his reputation on his playoff performances and his victory in Super Bowl XLVII. But we?re five Super Bowls removed of Flacco?s win.

Flacco may keep his job ? maybe. The Ravens may be able to win games ? maybe. But the questions about Jackson will never stop, not until after Flacco is no longer the Ravens starter. If history serves as a guide, that?s likely to occur in the next 12 months and even the next few weeks.

The questions may be annoying, but he better brace himself for something much worse. He may soon be out of a job.

it depends on one`s p.o.v?..flacco`s survived 3 or 4 years with some of thee worst surrounding skill position talent in nfl history.....other teams` castoffs...career back-ups....and when this franchise dipped early in the draft for skill position talent(which it rarely does),it`s failed miserably(Perriman/maxx Williams)...?

my guess is they rarely spend early picks on skill position players because of the franchise`s recent record of developing(or rather NOT developing) talent(unlike the steelers who seem to consistently develop their own talent and thus provide Roethlisberger with the continuity that only home grown talent can provide)?..the ravens`s offensive philosophy?.....bring in flotsam and jetsam that`s no longer wanted by the lesser teams that let them go....and hope flacco can resurrect their careers......it`s a revolving door approach that`s never really worked.....it`s hard for a qb to establish continuity with new players every year.....once in a while it works(anquan boldin who the ravens jettisoned the year after they won a super bowl and then went on to post back to back 80+ catch seasons...and then 60+ catch seasons the two years after those...4 years of excellent productivity lost after boldin established an excellent rapport with flacco..but this front office would rather pay nose tackles that can`t push the pocket)?. they`ve never valued offense...never.....

and we`re seeing it play out again with the lamar Jackson experiment....maybe they`ve stumbled onto gold with Jackson and udfa gus Edwards...my feeling is that it won`t last past this season.....6`2" 195 lb running qbs(with nearly a 1/1 run/pass ratio) don`t last in the nfl?.ask rg 3....def coordinators will adjust and force Jackson to throw from the pocket...and he doesn`t do that well....unlike say Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson who are excellent, accurate passers aside from their ability to run........

I think the best case scenario for flacco would be to move on to a team that needs a solid, veteran passer to stabilize things...if flacco goes to the right place(say Jacksonville)...a place with an elite back and some young receivers.....a team with an already decent defense....that team can make some noise....I hope he does move on...he`s never been appreciated by the media, fans or front office here in Baltimore....he took a .500 franchise and turned it into a perennial winner until the last 4 years went to shit...?a class act from the beginning to the end...never complained about what they surrounded him with...never passed the buck,,,not once...not through this entire Jackson situation, either...

he deserves better than Baltimore to end his career.....

my brother...I`m hoping that the ravens win sunday so we can see what san diego does with Jackson and our gimmicky offense after seeing it in person once already....

the reason this defense looks so unbeatable is because (with the exception of the 2nd half sunday where san diego made some key adjustments),they`re not on the field...the ravens`s time of possession advantage has been incredible with Jackson and the running game grinding down opponents...the defense, instead of being on the field for 70 or 80 snaps is on the field for 50 or 60....they`re rested....and confident....

but......this will be the first time that a team will get a second crack at the "lamar factor" after seeing it once in person already(and fairly recently,at that)?..

I can`t wait to see the line......I hope my dreams come true......

You're on your A game tonight, Weasie.

I've gone sour on Joe the last 4 years and it just gets worse and worse. He doesn't do it anymore. He seems to be going through the motions, he's definitely not a leader, he's not capable of improvising on any plays, he just goes with the play they call and goes with it no matter what.

When they bring in Lamar and he lines up wide, he just stands there with his hands on his hips and doesn't even participate in the play as if he's protesting. When he's off the field he sits on the bench by himself and looks like he's not into the game at all. It's time for Joe to go.

Lamar is not the long term answer either, I totally agree with you there. I doubt he lasts 10 games. And, you're right, the rest of the NFL will figure this offense out and that'll be the end of it. For now, I'm all for it. it's our best shot. I think we have a chance to do something. Have to win Sunday, though, and I'm not really confident about this game. See what happens. Nice seeing you around. :toast:

The numbers say the Ravens should be -2 on a neutral field.

My guess is Ravens -4 maybe 4'

But that will give the books mostly Chargers action. I think they want that.

What line makes your dreams come true, Weasie?

Gonna be a tough atmosphere for the Chargers to play in.

I really like Ravens chances for a nice run but my biggest fear is this game Sunday vs the Browns.
