unreal....130 pitches for a young arm. Torberg should be shot.

A guy so negligent shouldnt have control over guys like Burnett, Beckett, Penny, Redman, etc. He will have these guys ruined by 2005. What a shame

tease:

i believe you were the one about to go nuts when miller pitched 100 pitches for houston last week.

a guy like redman (who doesnt top 90 mph) on his pitches- he could throw 150 pitches and still never have a problem

this "pitch count" thing is really starting a paranoia around baseball. i dont buy into it at all quite honestly

gman.....no disrespect, but have you ever been a pitcher at a very competitive level?

It IS a big deal....no matter how you slice it. If it wasnt then why dont teams just throw a couple pitchers out there every night? Because it is taxing on your arm, especially a young arm. You may not see direct results on it this early in the year, or this early in a career, but it is not healthy to throw a young guy out there for 130+ pitches.

And just because a guy may only throw in the upper 80's doesnt mean he isnt throwing hard. It is quite possible that is the hardest he can throw, and that is just as taxing on an arm as it is for Randy Johnson to throw his upper 90's fastball.

Wait until the end of the season, and mark my words....all of the Marlin starters will have seen their time on the disabled list, and much of it can be avoided.

big tease:

you know i very much respect your opinion, and you are a bright guy, in fact i think youre one of the smarter guys here.... but please dont question my baseball acumen.

the pitch count has been one of baseballs true absurdities.

im not saying a guy should be throwing 180 pitches.

but for as much sidework as these guys do, and for as well conditioned as they are nowadays- youd think theyd be able to throw MORE pitches than starters back in the day.

its like some think (and im NOT directing this at you. im talking about other people) that if a guy throws 110 pitches his arm is gonna fall off.

i dont see anyone complaining when prior was throwing all those pitches at usc, and now he's done nothing but IMPROVE from year one to year two with the cubs.

its the curveball pitchers who need to watch their pitch count sometimes. kerry wood is a good example.

i just dont buy into the 110 pitch count

I do agree with your points in your last post. The pitch count is an overdone point, but it does have some validity. But it is true....guys warm up in the bullpen before the game then throw 10 warmup pitches...but those dont count in the pitch count??? What...they didnt actually throw those?? So I agree that it can be an overdone point, but I have seen so many guys whether it be teammates of mine or young guys in the pros that have been shut down because of overusage. In the competitive league....sometimes guys wont tell ya when they are hurting or when they have had enough, so it HAS to be up to the manager to tell these younger guys when they are done.
