Soldier Charged With Having Himself Shot

By RANDY PENNELL

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police have arrested a soldier they say had his cousin shoot him so he wouldn't have to return to Iraq.

Army Spc. Marquise J. Roberts, of Hinesville, Ga., suffered a minor wound Tuesday to his left leg from a .22-caliber pistol, police said. He was treated at a hospital, then arrested after he and his cousin allegedly admitted making up a story about the shooting.

After giving differing accounts of the incident, ``they just broke down and confessed that they concocted the whole story so he didn't have to go back to the war,'' Philadelphia police Lt. James Clark said Thursday.

Police charged Roberts with filing a false report and charged his cousin, Ronald Fuller, with aggravated assault and other charges.

Roberts, who was visiting family in Philadelphia, initially claimed he was shot during an attempted robbery, but Fuller had said the incident occurred at another location during an argument, according to Clark.

Roberts, 23, was on a two-week leave from the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, which led the assault on Baghdad in 2003. He is scheduled to return to Iraq within the next few months. The division has been home since the summer of 2003.

Police said Roberts, a supply specialist who had spent seven months in Iraq, was distraught about having to return to combat duty and wanted to stay with his family.

Lt. Col. Cliff Kent, a 3rd Infantry spokesman, said Roberts had been scheduled to return this week to Fort Stewart, Ga.

Roberts could face military discipline if the charges prove true, Kent said, but the civilian case probably would proceed first.

1305 as of today. We still don't here of any plan to give control over to the people. In fact the travel on roads has gotten so bad. They now are flying supplies around the country with 69, C130's to stay off the roads as much as possible. Folks that's almost like giving up. Lets secure the place and get out. This half way B S is same crap we tried in Nam. It didn't work then and it wont work now.
Kosar the dude was wrong. But he may have seen the latest polls on support for Iraq war now at or below 42%. The puplic polls on Rummy head are all against him. Some as much as 60%. We need some new thoughts and new leadership. Bush needs to start with Rummy.

Yes, Rumsfeld is mainly to blame for the unbelieveably bad prosecution of this war. It was a poor decision to go in there at all, for all sorts of reasons, but if it happens you at least expect the leaders to put the troops in the best possible situation. It's telling that 9(or is it 10?) of the 15 cabinet members have left, but it really speaks to Dubya's stupidity and stubborness that he keeps the most obviously incompetent one.

Sure, this guy was wrong, but it's understandable.

He was a supply specialist and presumably went with convoys often in his 7 months over there. Despite DTB and the like mocking those calling for armor on the trucks, these are the guys getting killed in this war. This isn't a traditional war. The supply guys and the truck drivers aren't in the rear. They're out there in the open just as much as, if not more, than the infantry guys.

"Despite DTB and the like mocking those calling for armor on the trucks, these are the guys getting killed in this war."

--wasn't mocking was dissing those haven't been outside Kuwait whining to Rumsfield about how their humvees are equiped--when foot soilders are hoofing it house to house with no cover--and those that refuse to go on mission and dupe the press into believing it is suicide mission --and fact of matter is their unit had yet to suffer 1st casualty since being in Iraq and another unit took their place that day with no incident.

Life in general is an attitude---and without going into detail I will say there is no one that would rather see the whiners go home then the other troops in their midst.Their attitude is dangerous and will get you killed.

Consider this--when report on soilders that refused to take supplys 1st came out--what was your very 1st thought, was it concerning their welfare or the welfare of troops that were counting on receiving supplys--I can tell you whose welfare was concern to those that been in combat and it was much different than the media's.

"morally"

[adj] concerned with principles of right and wrong or conforming to standards of behavior and character based on those principles; "moral sense"; "a moral scrutiny"; "a moral lesson"; "a moral quandary"; "moral convictions"; "a moral life"

Thats pretty funny Stevie-- coming from a Clinton supporter--this might make top 5 in my liberal logic list.

Thread has started well, turned into morongate. Is oil moral? Halliburton moral? Invading a nation-exterminating its citizenry moral? Bankrupting your own citizenry moral? Leaving thousands of Americans dead and permanently disabled, their families ruined moral?

oil that fuels the combines, tractors, trucks, and ships which feed the world?

oil that provides power to labs which help cure worldwide illness providing cures and managing sickness?

oil that is part of an economy that keeps billions of humans working and producing?

halliburton which provides that oil?

eliminating a threat to the world's oil supply and perpetrator of almost ever natural right given to mankind?

spending our resources on productive business and harvest of the earth's natural resources while elimination worldwide threats instead of giving it away for nothing?

sounds pretty moral to me

Merry Christmas from an oil advocate!

This list reminds me of that *other* chain email that listed like 583 people that died supposedly as a direct result of Clinton. Disappointing, but not surprising.

This one I *have* to hear. How in the f*ck was Saddam a threat to the worlds oil supply?

Mr Kosar a little over a decade ago Mr Hussein chose to attempt to become a major player in the region by invading Kuwait

His goals were very clear. It does not take James Baker to explain what his intentions were and had been since.

He agreed to resolutions after a cease fire agreement. Why the US chose to use the UN and Hussein to negotiate a cease fire agreement I will never know. Some think perhaps because they are both honest, reliable, and forthright. I however, had my suspicions about both parties.

Inevitably, Mr Hussein did not live up to his end of the bargain. Thus enforcing the sanctions became our only option after a decade or so of weak foreign policy had hurt our credibility.

Thus we took action.

Action which I believe was necessary and always will. But obviously mistakes have been made in executing our gameplan. A mistake free gameplan would very unlikely, and it would be nice if all our politicians would figure out a plan to get us out instead of pointing fingers.

Freeze,

You didn't even attempt to answer the question. Again, 'how was Saddam a threat to the worlds oil supply?' He was neutralized for 12 years. He went into Kuwait and the smarter Bush knew that trying to occupy this country was a losing proposition.

Yes, of course, he would LOVE to control the worlds oil. Just like Iran. Just like Syria. Just like Israel. Just like France. Just like Turkistan. Just like us.

There's a long way from wanting something and having the ability to do it.

unfortunately, none of our leaders ever admit any kind of mistake. it's always someone elses fault - or was never a mistake to begin with. i dont know if it's a sign of the times or what. it's as if you commit career suicide by being real with people. all your allowed to do is say stupid stuff about "terror" and "freedom" and "cowards" and "courage" - overusing these words to the point where they have absolutely no meaning anymore.

when i hear dubya say anything about freedom, i want to vomit. he's just manipulating us - taking advantage of people's idealistic and unrealistic views about us and our place in the world. he used 9-11 to get re-elected, he uses it every time he wants support for anything.
