hold on guys, i'll be right with you ...... 98. i will not bet on conference road favorites. 99. i will not bet on conference road favorites. 100. i will not bet on conference road favorites. ok, now on with business.

3-1 last night as late addition (and conference road favorite) cal poly covers the entire game except the end. can't complain though as san diego covers by the hook curtesy of a late line move. vols play a magnificent game only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the final seconds. oregon state as expected hangs with the wildcats all the way. overall record improves to 37-28-1, 8-2 the last ten games. for tonight:

college of charleston +3: this line was up all night at oly but i just noticed they've taken it down this morning. i would fire the guy who made this line. tarheels woes now well publicized so won't rehash them here. add the following to their plate -- practice week starts off lackluster, coach publicly complains; tuesday starting center kris lang sprains his knee in practice to go with the stomach virus he's had that's caused him to barf during the last two games; lang does't practice wednesday or thursday, but evidently he's around long enough to give his bug to brian morrison and joe everett who were heaving during practice this week; get up today and go to charlotte to play another no-name who has a better team than you; coach announces lang probably won't play tonight. i really have no idea where they came up with this line, i guess chas lost some value after a three point home loss to division ii belmont abbey (a decent team btw). however, they followed it up with a nice two point win at unc-w, a tough team on a tough home court. that's the only quality win in their 6-1 record, but they beat carolina in this game in '98 when unc still had something and they played them within four last year when heels still had forte and haywood. the more i think about it we probably won't see this line again but i'll still take the game at any line where i'm not layin'.

back later

in answer to your question unknowncomic, yes i do weigh games for unit play but i decided to only track record here by games played. 80%+ of my plays are for one unit. while i've been doing pretty well with my big plays, the way i choose them is more psychic that science, that is to say, more based on intangibles that numbers. it is probably unsound methodology that i would rather not advocate here. i will occasionally post up a play as a two unit play if i feel it is exceptionally strong.

thanks for the kudos.

ps - loved your act on the gong show. did you get to hang with chuck barry?

Gosh Loophole, it didn't take long for you to post your play for tonight; bright and early! Just kidding!

Good writeup and I wholeheartedly agree! When I saw the overnight line of UNC -7 last night, I was flabbergasted! Now granted, College of Charleston is not a powerhouse but neither was Hampton or Davidson. Even when UNC has courted good teams, CoC always gave the Heels fits. Kris Lang might play but I really don't think it matters.

Without rambling, I will put this as bluntly as possible. CoC will beat Carolina tonight and will play the loser of the St.Joes/Ga.St. game which will more than likely be Ga. St. Don't you know Lefty Driesell will relish the moment of beating Carolina one more time!

For those of you that read this and are convinced that I am just a "homer" bad mouthing my alma mater's excuse for a basketball team, you are right! But, who am I to complain?

And for those of you who have read Loophole's writeup of the game and are convinced that Loophole is loving every single opportunity to bet against Carolina in "good" spot because he hates Carolina, you are right! (Please excuse my presumptious statement, Loophole.)

But as gamesmen who recognize good value, take our advice.....play CoC tonight, you won't regret it!

On the bright side for the Heel fans...at least we are tied for 1st in the ACC!

i think it goes back to when i was a sports reporter in raleigh in another lifetime and got to see dean smith and the program up close. it was akin to loving saugage and then touring the sausage plant - or going to law school and then going to work in the court system. you can never go back. i was always resentful of the fact that dean was always portrayed publicly as a saint (which is isn't) and jimmy v was always maligned as selfish (which he wasn't). he was dean's equal as a coach and the better man. really though, i like matt d now as a coach and i he was one of my favorite carolina players - not a lot of talent but always gave 101%. i hope the fickle carolina fans don't turn on him because of circumstances that are not of his making.

i'm giving a hard look at oklahoma +1- but gonna wait as the line appears to be moving up. it seems a lot to ask of the terps to lay points in norman in their first real road game of the year, especially coming off the exam layoff and the resulting limitations on practice. sooners playing fourth game in seven days but the other three have been cakewalks at home. sooners scored 100+ in all three and shooting lights out over last seven (over 51%). terps beat them by eight last year in college park but that was right after sooner's best player jr raymond suspended for drug use. norman is one of the toughest home courts in tne big 12. looks like a nice home dog int the making.

Loophole, we truly have a underappreciated rivalry in N.C. I would expect nothing less from a wuffie!

I know Chuck the Chest really wanted to play well in front of the Florida prospective recruits last night so I know it hurts.

After sharing an apartment for 3 years with a UNC basketball player, I can atest to your sentiment toward Dean Smith. He ain't no Saint! I feel the same way about Bobby Bowden, but triplefold!

Regarding Matt, you are right...he gave maximum effort and I think the "true" Carolina fans, not the bandwagon fans, will give him as much time as he needs to get it right.

Now, back to 'capping games...any thoughts on Madjack's Terps tonight. At this point, the line is Md. -1.5. Seems like a pretty good spot for Maryland. Oklahoma is always tough in Norman and I think alot of Coach Sampson but I think Dixon and Baxter are the difference tonight. (Woops, looks like we are posting at the same time. I will have to take a stronger look at this game...but at face value Maryland should win this game.)

BTW,nice run over the last 10....always read your posts and look forward to reviewing your plays.

the carolina line is back up at oly at heels -2-. there is simply no rational basis for this line even without factoring in lang's status or the stomach virus spreading through the team. who can discount the possibility of someone else getting sick? but what do i know - watch the tarheels win by 20.

adding a couple:

oklahoma pk: going to go head with the sooners at pickem. line has bounced around from +1- to -1 today so i'll go ahead and post it up now. most of my thoughts on the game are posted above.

ill-chicago pk: called this game in while i was xmas shopping about an hour ago but would still play it at -1. sw mo still without brakebill and off a hard fought overtime loss to purdue last night that was physically and emotionally draining. like greg, i think ill-chi the better team and ought to be laying around six.

last one for tonight:

georgia state +11: think its called cricket arena now, but to the lefthander it's still the charlotte coliseum, where driesell ruled back in the sixties while leading davidson from obscurity to national prominence. lefty is one of my all-time favorite coaches, the type that can take his and beat yer'n or take yer'n and beat his. he loves the spotlight and will relish this homecoming game against a national power. i'm pretty sure they'll be ready. ga state's year's stats a little misleading as two starters out until halfway into the season. a little negative as top player cam campbell in lefty's doghouse and suspended, but panthers have enough depth to compete. recuiter extraordinaire dreisell has thrived in the atlanta inner city market, taking high quality athletes that the big schools can't accept. st joe off for the last ten days for exams, usually a negative in my mind because of practice disruption. lefty's boys off the better part of a week and lefty can do a lot with that kind of lead time. 767 wins says it all. if bulldogs couldn't run away from these guys in athens i doubt st joe can do it in charlotte. give me the lefthander and double digits any day.

good luck tonight to everyone.
