I think you were certainly justified in getting pissed and you will get your money I am sure, but I agree, there has to be a better way. I haven't had that happen yet but some just as bad. Like the rich fucks that signed a contract for an overlay and decided after I was done that they wanted an epoxy floor and didn't want to pay for it.
On another note. There is no such word as acrossed, and it is a mechanic's lien not lean.

I obviously don't care if I get paid at this point but I'm not kissing her ass for payment. I'll take my chances.

I honestly think that it has something to do with the fact that the customer is around you so much and for an extended time when working and they start to test limits. Just an opinion. I don't want to get a threatening e-mail or have to rub more creme on my vagina.

I don't know what it is then. I have had some very poor customers and some excellent ones. Not sure what triggers it but I put everything in the contract now, all the way down to the colors.
