The four major professional sports leagues and the NCAA filed a lawsuit Tuesday against New Jersey officials for implementing sports betting in the state.

The state?s push to legalize sports gambling, which had bipartisan political support and passed by voter referendum, ?threatens the integrity? of the games and ?undermines the public?s faith and confidence? in team sports,? according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court. It could also lead fans to suspect games are being rigged, the leagues wrote.

?Sports gambling in New Jersey would irreparably harm amateur and professional sports by fostering suspicion that individual plays and final scores of games have been influenced by factors other than honest athletic competition,? wrote the teams in the 12-page complaint.

New Jersey amended its state constitution last December to authorize wagering on professional sports at Atlantic City casinos and state racetracks. Voters passed a pro-gambling referendum backed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie and top Democrats in November.

Monmouth Park racetrack is trying to open a sports betting parlor in the fall, based on new gambling regulations passed by the Legislature and signed by Christie earlier this year.

The governor is named as a defendant in the suit, as are the state director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement and the director of the state Racing Commission.

The plaintiffs are the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB and NCAA.

State Sen. Ray Lesniak, a Democrat who is a leading proponent of the gambling expansion, cheered the lawsuit, saying it was expected and will ultimately help move the process forward.

?Let the games begin,? Lesniak said on Tuesday. ?From the start, we wanted our day in court to prove that the federal ban on sports wagering is unconstitutional.?

A 1993 federal statute gave states a year to authorize sports betting. Only five states currently permit it, with Nevada the only state offering full-fledged sports betting.

The lawsuit seeks a court declaration that New Jersey?s sports-betting law violates the federal statute and permanently bans the efforts to allow sports gambling in the state.

In ten years we'll be able to wager at the local 7-11.

Think about all that new square money in the market too.

You can today on Powerball and the Mega Millions. Giving the average joe a much more fair chance at picking the right side of the Monday Night game seems reasonable to me.

Except the vig is not -200 on an even money wager when it comes to sporting events, unlike the daily number.

Talk about a scam. I'ts still a pt peeve of mine that they list the payout of the 3-digit number at 500-1. It's not really 500-1 when they return $500 for every $1 you wager, it's $499-1, liars.

The lottery is such a scam. Another way to steal from the poor.

The major sports leagues are taking this serious. A good sign the end is near.

it is amazing to me when I go into food markets the number of people that are focused on scratching cards and playing the lottery.

Its a obsession.

I buy ten dollar cards once in awhile and let my wife scratch them.

it has a hold on them.

they cannot turn it lose.

They are looking to living the dream in UGA thread

But what really happens is they end up in one of The Boys threads trying to catch air.

personally doubt it very seriously..

Big Brother hasn't figured out how to sell pot at the 7-11 yet...damn sure ain't going to risk sports wagering at any convience store without absolute full controll.

Big Brother will shut down all off-shore ability shortly before the availability of a p;arlay at your local convience store..

You will be able to get a nice dime bag and play the side and total on a MNF game..

just not until Big Brother has EVERY angle covered.

I think there is quite a difference between drugs and gambling. The tide has been turning for a long time. Good news should be around the corner for us. At least that is my belief.

In Canada you can bet on Sports at 7-11 (since the 1980's). Has to be a 2 teamer or a "pool" though.

Just sayin'

Gregg.......IE2002 is correct and not correct.

Sometimes the odds are bad, sometimes they are great. On the "pools" there are no odds, just split 50/50 (50% for the player 50% for the gov't).

Again you can't bet on single games, but if playing parlays sometimes the odds are better then anywhere on earth.

For example I had a parlay yesterday that paid 7.6-1. If you played the exact same parlay at 5dimes the odds would have been 6.5-1. I have played parlays that were say 15-1 and same parlay would have paid say 11-1 online.

So to answer your question, odds sometimes bad, and odds sometimes great. Of course odds mean shit if the bet does not win:mj07:

Canada (almost every province) has been doing it since the 1980's. Eventually USA will get their act together and do the same thing.

The "pools" (Pro Picks) are very popular, can get huge paydays for 5 dollar bets.....

("pools" are available in almost every province)
