Kansas City area for who knows how long....
$2.69 here...

a petrol engineer once told me:

1 - only pump in your car it's recommended octane (85, 93, etc.)

2 - Try buy from a gas station that is fairly new (no old cruddy tanks) and sells a lot of gas, circulating it out often.

3 - buy the cheapest gas you can find according to these two rules.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports:

Gasoline brands get mixed during shipment

While gasoline is sold at more than a hundred thousand of retail outlets across the nation, many are unbranded dealers that may sell gasoline produced by different companies. Branded stations may not necessarily sell gasoline produced by its refineries. This mixing of brands occurs because gasoline from different refineries is often combined for shipment by pipeline, and companies owning service stations in the same area may be purchasing gasoline at the same bulk storage and distribution terminal.

The only difference between the gasoline at station X and the gasoline at station Y may be the small amount of additives that those companies add to the gasoline before it gets to the pump.

that "Top Tier" sounds suspiciously to me like a marketing gimmick. It is a little bottle of additives they pour in that big ass delivery truck to drum up great statistics which show up on a gas chromatography?mass spectrometry test. But does it really help?

I doubt it. But if you ever read your owner's manual, you will find a few manufacturers who do recommended it....so to be safe, what I do is what this automotive engineer found in his testing:

Randy Stephens, chief engineer for Toyota's Avalon, isn't wholly convinced by the claims of engine protection afforded by higher-priced gas. He says fuel experts at his company study the effects of different brands of gas on the Toyota engines. Automotive engineers disassemble engines after 10,000 miles of running them on different brands of gas to see if there is a difference.

"Honestly, in the 10 years I've been in charge of Avalon, I've never seen one come back with any sort of deposit issue," Stephens says.

Nevertheless, Stephens admits to being "swayed" by ads that tout cleaning agents. Twice a year he adds a bottle of Chevron U.S.A. Inc.'s Techron ? the same additive that's in Chevron gasoline ? to the fuel tank of his personal car.

This thread is comical......everyone gets the same gas, the only difference is the additives.....We add 5 times above the minimum additives which labels us Top Tier and I would not fill up with nothing less. :0008
