When a Tinley Park teen got busted Monday afternoon for stealing a bottle of cologne from Sears in Orland Park, he bolted, starting a chase that included swinging a golf club at his pursuer and ended with spitting in a cop's face, authorities said.
A Sears security guard noticed Daniel S. Ochoa, 19, 6112 Jennifer Ave., Tinley Park, take the cologne and a few small items totalling $72 shortly after noon Monday. The teen fled north from the department store in Orland Square Mall, running across 151st Street and into Dick's Sporting Goods, according to Orland Park police Cmdr. Chuck Doll.
The security guard closed in on Ochoa in the sports store ---until the teen grabbed a Max Fly golf club :scared and swung at his head, Doll said.
After driving away the guard, Ochoa left Dick's and entered Filene's Basement, where police spotted him. When they approached Ochoa, police said he "went into a fighting position."
Police subdued Ochoa and arrested him without having to use a baton or Taser, Doll said. But that doesn't mean Ochoa was on good behavior.
"He spit in the face of one of our officers," Doll said. "The guy was spitting all over the equipment in the squad car."
In the squad car, Ochoa spit on the dash, computer, mirror, seats and windows.
Ochoa ended up with clothing over his head. Doll said he didn't know whether officers put the clothes there to stop him from spitting, but they might have.
"You're talking about biologicals he's spitting," Doll said. "You don't know what he does have; you don't know what he doesn't have."
Ochoa has been charged with retail theft, aggravated assault, battery and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanor offenses, Doll said.
