to clarify - since June 1, 2009, the US State Dept has required US citizens returning from Mexico or Canada to have a passport book, or a passport card (which is cheaper to get, but takes the same amount of time and paperwork)
for United States territories (basically Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) you are fine with a driver?s license or other valid photo identification, the same way you would be if you were flying to Las Vegas.
